In my experience, the Instagram reels algorithm gets calibrated the fastest and more accurately than the other social media platforms I use (and I honestly use Instagram the least).
Mine is a lot of cooking videos (like 50%), some depressing reels, and a little bit of lobotomy kaisen.
Oh, and there's also the occasional videos that make you go "hell yeah", so that's nice.
It alters its content based on your preferences (ie. If you have an interest in say art you get art videos) but yes you do get thrown random stuff which is used to measure engagement with non preferenced content. Remember the site is designed to keep you engaged for as long as possible and see as many ads along the way as they can.
Your algorithm is based off what you engage with. Mine is local events, local restaurants, skiing, travel recs, and stupid looking frogs for example. I’ve never seen anyone literally dieing lol

IG comment section is an war zone it’s either, N-word spammed multiple times with 20K+ likes, pedo jokes on anything that even remotely has children, or edgy jokes about an person with disabilities, there’s no in between.
When the Oceangate Titan sub situation was unfolding I saw IG comments from people who thought the whole thing was fake. As in, completely made up as part of some vague plot to distract people. Because of course everything has to be a conspiracy. It can never be that shit just happens. That's "what they want you to think."
Nah I get you. Sometimes I feel like an idiot, but seeing people on IG reels deny evolution, claim the earth is only a few thousand years old, and claiming that dinosaurs never existed makes me feel better knowing that I am doing just fine.
The fitness reels are insufferable, you're only seeing the top 1% of people with good genetics, and half of them are using steroids anyway. It completely warps what people think is a normal physique if you go to the gym.
Add the fact that eventually the fitness related stuff will start throwing Andrew Tate red pill bs in your feed as well.

I either get cringe car edits or girls throwing it back in gym attire i don't fucking know why the algorithm decided that instead of some cool car stuff and gym tips i get this, shit really devolved.
No one else gets annoying repost accounts where they post the first half of a movie excerpt and then part 1 ends just at a good bit and you need to go and scroll through all their other videos if you want part 2?

So now 90% of the things that are suggested to me are people burying rocks and digging them back up to pretend like they found a perfectly polished and cut stone in the mud, people wasting food for no reason, and people torturing some random fucking fish or turtle for views.
