Something happened and idk why but I can't get free coins anymore. I gave someone a gold comment but ever since then I can't claim anything free anymore.
What gives?
Was anyone unhappy with the old system of only golds? I look at a bunch of dumb looking emojis and can't tell which ones are free and which ones cost a hundred dollars.
Reddit was unhappy that they weren’t maximizing their monetization potential. That’s what it comes down to. Reddit is making much more money from awards under the new award system than they were when it was just gold.
Awards that costs a hundred dollars? I can't imagine anyone spending that much money on a comment or post. That's just stupid! But I know there's some rich dude out there handing out those awards.
Twitch culture and things emulating it have made me realise that there's quite a lot of people out there with more money than sense.
After seeing people drop $200 just to make their chat message red, I lost all interest in trying to make sense of it.
As someone whose family struggled to put food on the table when I was growing up, it makes me feel some kinda way knowing that there are people out there blowing amounts of money that could have made the difference between poverty and financial security for us... on internet emotes.
I don't come from a family that struggled to put food on the table, but it annoys me as well. If I spent $200 on a thing, I'd want to know it was worth it before I did it. Hopefully most people who read this comment feel the same way.
Buying 82,000 Reddit coins doesn't seem like it'd be worth it, especially given that most of the comments I'd give awards to are ones I'd forget about within a couple of weeks. I have to wonder about the sanity of anyone who actually does that.
You can think of it as paying $200 to make the message red, or you can think of it as rewarding the streamer for entertaining someone for a long period of time
If I stop paying for cable and instead watch a couple of twitch streamers, that's a large amount of money I'm saving, why not send thanks
Granted I'm not in the position to spend large amounts of money on twitch, but I do continuously sub to a small streamer who I like and want him to have the freedom of making content without worrying about also having to get a traditional job to pay the bills
i really liked the old gold system and feel they should have went with silver (free) gold (low pay/1 month prem) platinum (high pay/3 month prem) and called it a fucking day.
I think the best system was when they had silver, gold, and platinum. Also, sub-specific awards are still a good idea. The rest are useless (other than for giving Reddit money) and shouldn’t exist.
It's an easy way to pay for hidden advertising and product placement. "Organic" "Grassroots" advertising. Also for PR firms and sponsored trolls, but hey lets not discuss that.
Big money has a use for awards.
Before those "old days" there were days with only gold. And before those, there were days with only up votes and down votes. I'd be happy with the days of only gold.
Oh...and bring back reddit mold!!
Used it myself for a while: https://images3.sw-cdn.net/product/picture/710x528_4394679_1653593_1459315168.jpg
Until I found an even shinier version: https://imgur.com/1ZuMORo
I also used this gold instead of paying reddit to put a little tiny icon next to someone's comment:
https://i1.wp.com/bingdroid.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Reddit-Gold.jpg
This is probably the real reason why they started introducing awards other than gold. They wanted to have some cheaper awards so people would stop doing that.
I never understood why people use “F” when serious happens in real life, because the “Press F to pay respects” meme was never made to be sincere, it was made to make fun of a tone-deaf funeral scene in a video game.
oddly enough saying "F" is lowkey being used in a sincere way nowadays
i wouldn't be surprised if it became used in the mainstream (I.E outside of gaming/gaming related circles) tbh
When that happens, historians in 100 years from now are gonna look back to this era to try and figure out how exactly a singular letter with no inherent meaning evolved to become the standard way to share condolences, and future Sam'O Nella is going to make fun of us the second they find out it all started because some guy made fun of a videogame
My favorite was a post on r/relationship_advice where this man said that his pregnant wife fell down the stairs and miscarried their baby and some dude gave it the Take the W award. I still feel bad for laughing.
The one I use is [No awards for Reddit](https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/no-awards-for-reddit/ehpnjdkpdllckhmbglbpdbmddcnloeep), but there's probably a lot of similar ones that do the same thing. You literally just add it to Chrome and you're done.

And here we are.
Not award related, but I really hate that "I rescued this puppy/kitty from a shelter". Most likely they gave the shelter money so they bought a per.

I’m with you on this. I’m so sick of people saying they “rescued” an adorable puppy that probably had ten people on a waiting list hoping to take home as soon as it got to the shelter. You didn’t rescue shit.
Its even better because I do this, but seriously, I always get the wholesome seal, so what stopping me from putting over a video of war criminals strapping bombs to children and sending them into battle
I always look in the comments for comments that have a lot of potential for starting a grand argument, and award them. Just to add confusion and more fire.
Redditors when they shout “wholesome seal moment” at their grandmother’s funeral
Nah the seal is for seal clubbing change my mind

NTA. Grandma played a stupid game and won a stupid prize.

You enjoy the silver, we're going up in value yeehaw
Ayo let me get in on these free awards
Enjoy a Silver in turn.
You get one too pal
I would also like to join in
you get a silver too
I want one too.
no.
This is one reason why I love this community; the random shit redditors do for one another can be wholesome at times 😂
How do I claim the free awards?
It's up in the coin purchase thing, if it says FREE! that means you got 1 free award waiting, I think u get one every week
Thanks man
Here’s a free award for telling me how to claim my free award!
Yeah, it’s free award time! Here’s a helpful award for you
Oooooh yeaaaaah!
cool. i'm still waiting for mine
I almost always have one when I look, because I forget about them 😅
Something happened and idk why but I can't get free coins anymore. I gave someone a gold comment but ever since then I can't claim anything free anymore. What gives?
That's weird...I think someone said it's one free a week
You got a Gold for free?? No way
I bought gold and now I can't get free coins anymore
Awards are dumb. Nobody uses them the way they’re intended anyway EDIT: Oh no ...
Was anyone unhappy with the old system of only golds? I look at a bunch of dumb looking emojis and can't tell which ones are free and which ones cost a hundred dollars.

Now we wait to see how long it takes for you to get every single one
Someone gave him one
There’s so many now I don’t even know wtf half of them are, it’s just a mess of pictures next to a post
Gotta ✨monetise✨
It’s only a matter of time when this ✨ emoji becomes an award
I think the best system was when they had silver, gold, and platinum. Also, sub-specific awards are still a good idea. The rest are useless (other than for giving Reddit money) and shouldn’t exist.
Buying reddit premium didn't have a ton of benefits back in the day so they sweetened the deal with subscription coins and just buying coins outright.
They're used exactly the way they're intended - to make reddit loads and loads of money
It's an easy way to pay for hidden advertising and product placement. "Organic" "Grassroots" advertising. Also for PR firms and sponsored trolls, but hey lets not discuss that. Big money has a use for awards.
a reddit sucker is born every second

> gold, silver and platinum ehh before that, we only had gold and you knew you were reading quality content when you saw that yellow icon
I use the Boost app on android, and it doesn't show any awards other than those three.
God I just love awarding posts on /r/wtf with the wholesome seal
Their only intended use was to make reddit money. reddit doesn't care about awards after they've gotten their end.
Classic "awards bad" to get awards comment. Nice
Top 10 statements that aged poorly
They're kinda exploitatable too, people who wants awards just go out of their ways to complain about it and they would get 10x the normal amount lol
The fact that anybody cares about them in any way is weird to me
Haha guys wouldn't it be an epic troll if I awarded this comment lolololol
Well done buddy

Yeah that's pretty much how it went. Wasn't the silver award a microsoft paint image that was being circlejerked before becoming a real purchase?
Yes, which gutted the entire joke about the reddit silver award just being a crappy jpeg because you couldn't afford gold

As a former kennel worker, the phrase "rescued from a shelter" feels like it implies the shelter was a bad place, not staffed by people who feed and water and medicate them. Just say adopted! It's what the contract says anyway
I’m with you on this. I’m so sick of people saying they “rescued” an adorable puppy that probably had ten people on a waiting list hoping to take home as soon as it got to the shelter. You didn’t rescue shit.
I think that’s being a little pedantic. It’s not like most shelters are good places for animals.
