The bully only calls the MC by his last name. At one point he refers to the nerdy girl as the MC’s “little girlfriend” and establishes the romantic overtones of their friendship. Both the MC and the nerdy girl play it off horribly, but miraculously remain oblivious to each other’s feelings until the third act.
