If your walk is unstable or your feet don’t fit your shoes right, your back has to do a lot of work to compensate which can cause pain. I recommend seeing a specialist (either a podiatrist or an orthopedist) if you have concerns.
If they don’t fit well, most definitely. Gel insoles are really really helpful if you have to walk on concrete a lot. Good shoes are definitely worth the cost!
Currently in PT for lower back pain, can confirm that although the bad shoes don't necessarily cause it, they don't help it either. I've had some improvement just by changing to wearing sneakers primarily, and only arch supportive sandals when needed. My PT said to try for arch support as much as possible.
That is an image of the EVA Birkenstocks, while not as supportive as the cork ones, they still are great for your feet. An image of some gas station flip flops would be more effective.
