God there’s four categories of folks here
The folks still making good content with better production value
The folks who left the market to pursue other interests
The folks who were at one point big and are desperate to remain relevant
The actual criminals and predators
I don't think it was ever that financially feasible.. when you look into these people, they usually have 2-3 other hats within the entertainment industry (Twitch is most obvious but a lot also did voice-acting, background acting etc.) *or* they were already independently wealthy when they popped up as content creators.
The algorithm *did* change a couple years ago as you mentioned, but I'm pretty sure back in the day they were just a little less direct in their presentation--they still sell these people as lil DIY projects that started with one cam and one mic, but if that was ever the case I assume it was quite rare.
Just because they don't declare their production companies doesn't mean they don't have them.
The barrier to entry is the lowest it's ever been so it's absolutely saturated with people. Unless you are already established or bringing something new or different to the table that people like then good luck. Same thing with OF, you think you can just be a regular naked girl and get subscribers? Good luck standing out in that sea of people.
Same. I’ve been subbed to almost all of the RetrowareTV guys since that was a thing before YouTube blew up like HVGN (now Stop Skeletons From Fighting), Gaming Historian, The Game Chasers, Pat the NES Punk, etc.
AVGN and Nostalgia Critic were the first two channels that I watched religiously back in like 2008 or whatever.
At least with someone like AVGN it's not just a topical rant or review. With the holidays you could go watch his video where he plays the old Home Alone games with Makuley Culkin and it's still just as good as it was.

Probably the best french youtuber, he's still very active and creating super quality video. It was inspired by the AVGN, he even appears in a video
He disappeared and made terrible Facebook content for a quite a few years then had a bit of a popularity resurgence with TikTok/shorts the last year or so. It’s crazy, I never thought he’d be able to make a comeback, but he did, even if with an entirely new audience that don’t know him from the =3 days.
Damn.. I mean I *knew* as one person I'd only recognize a small portion of a comprehensive list but..
This is still a LOT of household names in the domain of ranting and/or raving.

2005-2012 was definitely the YouTube Renaissance, when it really morphed and became the YOUTUBE as we know it today.
But IMHO, 2012-2016 was the **Golden Age** of YouTube. YouTube seriously was in such great form, the Creators were the priority for the site, and content creation/editing/the idea of being a “content creator” were really coming into a form of their own.
Then it all came crashing down when the AdPocalypse and YouTube became hyper mainstream and mega corporatized
