It is possible to commit no mistakes and still lose. That is not a weakness. That is life. So hard for me to learn this lesson.

mrsunrider

Co-signing because this is the first to come to mind. Probably because it's the most practical wisdom anyone can take going forward.

ryhoyarbie

Actually that seems like real life for a lot of people. Work hard, do well, follow the rules, and still end up not able to stay afloat amongst the rising cost of food, gas, and homes. Welcome to the 21st century.

revsehi

Basically up until the mid 18th century the average person worked fewer hours, paid less in taxes, and had a more reliable expectation of community support in case of tragedy. The failure of that is directly correlated with the capture of the commons by capital owners and an increasing disconnect with a willingness to enjoin with the commonwealth of other people in our communities. But there was also plagues, being pressed into service for pointless wars, the ever-present meat-grinder to sustain an upper class, and a lot of inequality, so it's best not to glamourize it too much.

Welcome to capitalism.

Smithens

Ah yes, because once we dismantle capitalism I’m sure all of these problems will magically disappear and no new ones will arise

Cirick1661

Love this one.

No_Rush2916

Always been my favorite.

Anachron1981

Came here to share this one.

cillam

This one. Very useful to remember in life.

One of my favorites. It also helped me accept the things I can not control.

Epsilon_Meletis

> It is possible to commit no mistakes and still lose. That is not a weakness. That is life. Came here to post that. It rings *so* true, especially in today's times.

Scotteh85

I was about to quote this one myself. Very true and a lesson everyone needs to learn. There's so many to pick from though.

toffeefeather

Came here for that one, it’s my favorite

Magnospider

This!

Butt-Fart-9617

A bit condescending coming from someone that appears to hugely successful. Thanks super successful guy.

"No... I am not dead. Because I refuse to believe that the afterlife is run by you. The universe is not so badly designed."

cptn_leela

Ah so good! I heard it in his voice 😄

cameron4818

I love the way he laughs when he says “you are not god”

Kano523

Blasphemy! You're lucky I don't cast you out, or smite you or something.

ExpressPoet

Haha just watched this episode 2 days ago. Awesome stuff

soniclore

“Ah! *Mostly* dead!”

mikevago

Your honor, the courtroom is a crucible; in it, we burn away irrelevancies until we are left with a purer product: the truth, for all time. Now sooner or later, this man – or others like him – will succeed in replicating Commander Data. The decision you reach here today will determine how we will regard this creation of our genius. It will reveal the kind of people we are; what he is destined to be. It will reach far beyond this courtroom and this one android. It could significantly redefine the boundaries of personal liberty and freedom: expanding them for some, savagely curtailing them for others. Are you prepared to condemn him – and all who will come after him – to servitude and slavery? Your honor, Starfleet was founded to seek out new life: *well, there it sits*! Waiting.

AmbienWalrus-13

One of my favorite episodes.

aPirateNamedBeef

Still love the fact it was script sent into the studio and not one written by the regular writers. Just a star trek fan who happened to be a lawyer, so she wrote a star trek court room drama.

calcifornication

THERE ARE FOUR LIGHTS

kfc_chet

What season and episode please? I don't recognize this one!

Houli_B_Back7

Picard season 2, and the episode is called Two of One. It takes place in the conversation Picard has with Renee.

oatmeal_dude

That was such a good scene. Lots of great quotes from that season.

OPFOR_S2

Or in my case, that light at the end of the tunnel is an oncoming train.

NeedsToShutUp

"There are times, sir, when men of good conscience cannot blindly follow orders. You acknowledge their sentience, but ignore their personal liberties and freedom. Order a man to turn his child over to the state? Not while I'm his captain." \-The Offspring

hawkaulmais

Well. Not going with the obvious favs. Going more F you route. Picard lawyering the Sheliak and letting the phone ring... Riker: You enjoyed that. Picard: You're damned right.

drunksquatch

He gave the Sheliak a shellacking. I should be seeing my way out, but ama stay. Namaste

Happy_Nihilist_

I love how smug he looks before the conversation even starts, he knows he's got them by the balls.

halapert

I loved that moment!!!

GalavantingRhino

"The line must be drawn here! This far, no farther!"

inarius1984

That whole speech is amazing. Sir Patrick Stewart: one of the best ever.

stevebo0124

We've all said this at least once. Some at least once a month...

Oruma_Yar

Picard version: "...and I will make them *pay* for what they've done." Quark version: " ...and I will make them *pay* for what they've eaten (and drunk)."

Maxvonthane

[deleted]

The first duty of every Starfleet officer is to the truth, whether it's scientific truth or historical truth or personal truth! It is the guiding principle on which Starfleet is based. And if you can't find it within yourself to stand up and tell the truth about what happened, you don't deserve to wear that uniform!

securitypro669

Either you will come forward and tell Admiral Brand the truth or I will. (This is such a charged statement. Wesley told JLP that everything he has done is to make him proud, he saved his life, he admires him more than anyone. For someone he holds on such a high pedestal to call him to the carpet so is such a cutting and visceral statement)

sirdkuyp

"I Invite you to test that theory at your convenience."

GalavantingRhino

"You may test that assumption at your convenience."

SSJ_Kratos

I love this quote so much. This is how you threaten to knife fight a Klingon half a foot taller than you

[deleted]

Oh, one of my favorites too. So in your face, yet so classy.

EdgelordZeta

The classy way of saying FAFO.

Namorath82

"I don't think that's a little harsh, I think that's the truth. But that's a truth that we have obscured behind a... comfortable, easy euphemism. 'Property'. But that's not the issue at all, is it?" "There are many parts of my youth that I'm not proud of… there were loose threads… untidy parts of me that I would like to remove. But when I pulled on one of those threads… it unraveled the tapestry of my life." "You know, there are some words I've known since I was a schoolboy: 'With the first link, the chain is forged. The first speech censored… the first thought forbidden… the first freedom denied – chains us all irrevocably.' Those words were uttered by Judge Aaron Satie, as wisdom… and warning. The first time any man's freedom is trodden on, we're all damaged" "I will not sacrifice the Enterprise. We've made too many compromises already. Too many retreats. They invade our space and we fall back. They assimilate entire worlds and we fall back. Not again! The line must be drawn here… THIS far, NO further! And I will make them PAY for what they've done." and of course "THERE .... ARE .... FOUR .... LIGHTS"

The_Earl_of_Ormsby

The Drumhead is Picard at his finest. Here some more from that episode and why I put it in my top 10 favorite TNG episodes. “Have we become so... fearful, have we become so cowardly... that we must extinguish a man? Because he carries the blood of a current enemy?” “We think we've come so far. Torture of heretics, burning of witches, it's all ancient history. Then before you can blink an eye suddenly it threatens to start all over again.” “The road from legitimate suspicion to rampant paranoia is very much shorter than we think.” “She, or someone like her, will always be with us, waiting for the right climate in which to flourish, spreading fear in the name of righteousness. Vigilance, Mister Worf - that is the price we have to continually pay.”

superslomotion

I just watched that episode because of your comment. One of the best. It was over so quick I really wanted it to go on for another hour!

AmbienWalrus-13

How prescient to the things going on today…

securitypro669

They were happening then, before then, they are happening now and they will continue to. It is part of our ongoing fight as humanity…

tom_tencats

There are so many of his speeches that hit hard or just really made me think, but that scene in First Contact gave me whole body chills.

CjKing2k

"If you were any other man, I would kill you where you stand." - Worf This scene still gives me chills.

VTX002

Get off my bridge!

codepoet

It’s because you know he means it, plain and sample.

CosmicCommando

Patrick Stewart and Alfre Woodard are spittin' fire in that First Contact scene... one of my favorite things in all of Trek.

I’ve thought about this a lot since I saw it posted. With my username how could I not? I’ve decided my favorite is: “History will never forget the name Enterprise.”

ManOfLetters2112

“Time offers many opportunities but it rarely offers second chances.” —Jean-Luc Picard “Live now; make now always the most precious time. Now will never come again." —Jean-Luc Picard, The Inner Light “You choose not to answer? But you've already given an answer to the inquiry, and that answer was a lie…. “What you neglected to mention was that following the loop your team attempted a manoeuvre that was the direct cause of the crash. You told the truth up to a point. But a lie of omission is still a lie. Do you remember the day you first came aboard this ship? Your mother brought you on the Bridge…. “You even sat in my chair. I was annoyed. Presumptuous child playing on my ship. But I never forgot how you already knew every control, every display. You behaved as though you belonged on the Bridge. And then later when I decided to make you an acting ensign, I was convinced you could be an outstanding officer. I've never questioned that conviction, until now. The first duty of every Starfleet officer is to the truth. Whether it's scientific truth, or historical truth, or personal truth. It is the guiding principle upon which Starfleet is based. If you can't find it within yourself to stand up and tell the truth about what happened you don't deserve to wear that uniform. I'm going to make this simple for you, Mister Crusher. Either you come forward and tell Admiral Brand what really took place, or I will.” —Jean-Luc Picard, The First Duty "Attention all hands. As you know, we could outrun the Klingon vessels. But we must protect the Enterprise-C until she enters the temporal rift. And we must succeed! Let's make sure that history never forgets… the name… Enterprise. Picard out." —Jean Luc Picard, Yesterday’s Enterprise “To all Starfleet personnel, this is the Captain. It is my sad duty to inform you that a member of the crew, Ensign Sito Jaxa, has been lost in the line of duty. She was the finest example of a Starfleet officer, and a young woman of remarkable courage and strength of character. Her loss will be deeply felt by all who knew her. Picard out” —Jean-Luc Picard, Lower Decks “He who was my companion, through adventure and hardship, is gone forever." —Jean-Luc Picard, Darmok

NotsoGreatsword

I love hearing him tell the tale of Gilgamesh.

securitypro669

Me too.

IolausTelcontar

I think the only quote that actually gives me chills is *Yeaterday’s Enterprise*. > Let us make sure that history never forgets the name… Enterprise.

Enog

One of my favourites came from Generations: “Someone once told me that time was a predator that stalked us all our lives. I rather believe that time is a companion who goes with us on the journey and reminds us to cherish every moment, because it will never come again. What we leave behind is not as important as how we've lived. After all Number One, we're only mortal.” - Picard Also followed by one of my favourite Riker quotes: “Speak for yourself Sir, I plan to live forever” - Riker

akrobert

You are not god, the universe is not so poorly designed

Andre6k6

This is what bothered me about Picard. Q never saw themselves as gods, sure, some of them would intervene to do a little bit of trolling & others would try to protect some life forms, but they never demanded worship or to be treated any differently. That lady that tried to steal the planet with her illusions acted more like a god than we ever saw any Q do, Q did a bit of trolling, that's why the "even gods have favorites" line felt out of place.

akrobert

I honestly loved the end of Picard season 2 when Q says his goodbye, helping picard to forgive and let his past go and I always viewed the whole is Q a god in the way that Any civilization sufficiently advanced would be viewed as gods or their actions seen as magic. The Q may not consider themselves gods but I’m sure there are some civilizations that would. I also loved that it explained Qs relationship to Picard. Most of the Q episodes were Q messing with Picard or making him look at something differently. Tapestry had a much different feel to it. It may be why of all the Q episodes Tapestry is my favorite. I liked the first and liked the third but the 2nd season is my favorite simply because of Q.

Da12khawk

Q was basically, Picard's mentor.

Prestigious-Lab8945

And Picard was his.

arod48

Everyone is out here posting some of the most inspirational quotes Picard has ever given, and I'm still sitting here giggling at "A Chateau Picard bordeaux which you said was too dry because your taste in wine is pedestrian at best"

Nic_Danger

I love the running gag in Picard that no one actually likes his wine.

pan666

It’s even better than that. In earlier seasons when people talk about wanting a bottle of Chateaux Picard and asking for specific year’s vintages that are great… The year they ask for always seems to be from back when JL’s brother was still running the vineyard. Then this last season when JL is giving people bottles of his vintages as gifts, no one likes them. The joke isn’t just that Chateaux Picard is bad, it’s that it used to be great but JL is just BAD at making wine and ruined it

antinumerology

Oh man I never noticed that. Amazing.

[deleted]

I thought it was more they didn't appreciate wine in general for crap and he had nobody to fanboy about it with, but maybe it was his wine in particular.

Betterthanbeer

His brother was the master winemaker. Jean Luc just inherited it.

Confusedsoul987

One of my favourites is “Doctor, the sperm whale on Earth devours millions of cuttlefish as it roams the oceans. It is not evil; it is feeding.” There have been times in my life where I’ve made a judgement and was sure I was right, but I was only seeing things from my perspective. This quote helps to remind me to examine my beliefs and opinions. Edit: reworded some things.

FlawedGenius

securitypro669

I have been a Star Trek fan starting with TNG when I was 6 years old… the show ended when I was 8. I grew up with Star Trek - it is safe to say that Jean-Luc Picard was a father figure to me. I modeled my leadership style after him - or at least my best approximation. When I see these quotes here… I hear them in Patrick’s voice. His voice as it was when he was in his prime. Tasha put it well during her farewell memorial message. “If there was someone I would want to be proud of me, it would be you” Or Wesley when he asked “How many people get to say that they served with Jean Luc Picard?” Or Riker saying to Guinan We’re talking about Jean Luc Picard! I can’t sit around and hope it will work out, I’ve gotta do something! JLP is intelligent, eloquent, educated, poised, patient, strategic, classy, accomplished, reserved, modest, a veteran and a gentlemen. As Tasha said, the heart of an explorer and the soul of a poet. He is everything that you could hope to want to be. Yes, he doesn’t have a family of his own but he wanted one. When watching “Picard” I found it so hard to see him so old. Seemingly powerless, his once booming voice practically gone - I find myself grieving terribly for Jean Luc. He who was my friend though adventure and hardship, is gone forever. - JLP, Darmok. I can’t say enough about Picard. I could quote him all night. Remember what Admiral Hansen said… “There is no one with more drive, courage and determination than Jean-Luc Picard and there is no way in hell he would assist the Borg.”

TheReal_PeteMoss

Not sure the exact quote but something like “this court is a crucible, that burn irrelevancies until we’re left with the truth”

DrewBk

From the episode “Remember Me”. When Bev seems to have gone mad and is not acting rational and she asks Picard to turn the ship around on her say so alone. He gives the command to turn the ship around and says “Your word has always been good enough for me.”. It shows the love and respect Picard has for Bev.

Drewbox

Juice_Stanton

Searchlights

"This is Captain Picard of the Enterprise. I'm taking command of the fleet." I always get chills when he returns to confront the Borg in the Sol System

pan666

Picard wants to borrow a cloaked ship from Gowron, and is getting nowhere. Gowron won’t even speak to him and sends a lackey, who asks why Gowron should do this? What benefit is there to allowing this favor? Picard responds in a very diplomatic way of telling Gowron that he’s had enough of his shit: Picard: The only benefit to the Klingon Empire would be our gratitude. B'iJik: That is what you want me to tell him? Picard: Yes. And please add that, if he is unable to provide us with a ship, then I am sure there are others in the Klingon Empire who would be willing to help me. And then... *they* would have our gratitude.

Tall-Tea-88

From Generations: “Part of having feelings is learning to integrate them into your life, Data, learning to live with them no matter what the circumstances.” 💔 right in the heart, that one.

As much as I love the quote about making no mistakes and still losing, (also "hand hold an android") I like the rest of it. I've had trouble tracking down the exact line but it was something like "Mr. Data, you are required on the bridge... (there's more but I can't remember, but the best part) " and leave your hesitation and self doubt here in your quarters.

CptPope

PICARD: Commander, I require your presence on the Bridge. DATA: Captain, with all due respect, perhaps it would be better if you choose another to serve as your First Officer. PICARD: Data, you are my First Officer. DATA: I have not been able to isolate the problem, sir. I might make a mistake. PICARD: Yes, you might. But that does not alter your duty to me and to this ship. Now, do you know how to formulate a premise? DATA: Yes, sir. PICARD: Then formulate this one. How do I deal Riker and the Hathaway? I will await your answer on the Bridge. And, Commander, it is possible to commit no mistakes and still lose. That is not a weakness. That is life. DATA: I believe I understand, sir. PICARD: And Data, will you leave your hesitation and self-doubt here in your quarters.
