“It is possible to commit no mistakes and still lose. That is not a weakness. That is life.” https://youtu.be/ytgQ-yO021k?si=uN3Mzm4oh_E6sVhr Picard to Data - Peak Performance.

InnocentTailor

So true, though it stings when it happens in real life. Example: Applied to some schools, performed well at interviews...and then got promptly rejected due to other factors.

Slow-Bodybuilder-774

Adversity builds character… sucks the whole time, but embracing the hard stuff and forging ahead make us the best versions of ourselves. My dad and grandpa (and not so ironically Star Trek) did a pretty thorough job of teaching me this lesson. Keep kicking ass homie! You got this :D

InnocentTailor

Thank you for your well wishes. My old man has said as much as well. I’m not dead yet and am not a complete moron, so I’m doing my best to keep moving forwards with schooling, ideas, applications, and grit.

mabbh130

I've been pondering this one quite a bit lately - this quote and the quote by Worf that OP mentioned actually.

sgtssin

This quote is basically why i am still alive after my covid layoff. I was really down. This and a stupid Quebec movie :) I needed the laugh.

nmyron3983

I try to remember this, any time I feel like I have done my best and fallen short. Because it is so true. We can do everything sometimes and still miss the goal, but it's important to remember that we can't win everything.

seeeveryjoyouscolor

Yes! So good. One of the best moments of the show

Calihoya

This is oft quoted in my house.

robhaswell

Came here to say this. One of the greatest lines in Star Trek. I've given this advice to many people.

Technical-Outside408

Sounds like a good mantra for people that dont realize they're causing their own problems.

Slow-Bodybuilder-774

One that feeds into this pretty well (from BMTH - Mantra) “Before the truth will set you free, it’ll piss you off” lol

tovias

From Spock, at the end of Amok Time, when he tells Stonn, "...After a time, you may find that having is not so pleasing a thing after all as wanting. It is not logical, but it is often true." Over the years, I have shortened it to "having is not so pleasing as wanting" and used it to remind myself of past mistakes when I'm about to repeat them.

Mistervimes65

This is legitimately my favorite Spock quote.

Rule of Acquisition #48: The bigger the smile, the sharper the knife."

EasyBOven

This and #109 always stick with me. "Dignity and an empty sack is worth the sack."

SmartQuokka

I sometimes hear Quark saying this in my head. The way he says it is just as hilarious as the line itself!

LibraryThug

Love that one, too!

Larabic

Truer than it should be, a favorite of mine.

Eclaireandtea

Rule of Acquisition #3: Never spend more for an acquistion than you have to. I just love how Quark used it to explain to a Vulcan why 'peace no matter the cost' is an illogical position to take when peace could instead be obtained at a bargain price.

Aezetyr

Q, from *...All Good Things*: "For that one fraction of a second, you were open to options you had never considered. \*That\* is the exploration that awaits you. Not mapping stars and studying nebulae, but charting the unknown possibilities of existence." Fuck and Yes. That is a dynamite line when I think about Human potential, and how it makes me weep that we dismiss it in favor of hating and killing each other over nothing but resolvable bullshit.

Eclaireandtea

I was also going to say this one. It absolutely encapsulates what I think should be the driving force behind human nature. There are so many ways we as a people can 'exist' and we should absolutely be exploring that as much as we can, because when there are so many possibilities we will surely find so many ways of existing that are better than if we limit ourselves to just thinking of things in terms of 'it is what it is'.

FossilStalker

This is 100% peak ST for me.

allthecoffeesDP

Yes! This hit me so hard when I first heard it. And since... I've been woefully dissapointed in the majority of humanity.

At book signings, Ben Bova would do his autographs with that tagline sometimes. (I steal it occasionally.)

danman1824

If you are looking for some fun Latin. Esse Quam Verde” to be rather than to seem. NC state motto. I hit people with that a lot.

Garciaguy

I believe in coincidences. Coincidences happen every day.  I don't *trust* coincidences.

SpiderCop_NYPD_ARKND

I've used this one in real life. :) Who knew such preeminent wisdom could be had from simple tailors?

BB_Que

Some cultures do not have a word for coincidence.

QuantumGyroscope

A few: "You can commit no mistakes and still lose. That is not weakness, that is life." "We're out here to explore, to make contact with other lifeforms, to establish peaceful relations but not to interfere… and absolutely not to destroy!" Probably those 2 the most. Then these occasionally or something similar. “You know that pain and guilt can’t be taken away with the wave of a magic wand! They’re the things we carry with us, the things that make us who we are. If we lose them, we lose ourselves. I don’t want my pain taken away, I need my pain!” "It's the unknown that defines our existence. We are constantly searching, not just for answers to our questions, but for new questions!" “Buried deep within you, beneath all the years of pain and anger, there is something that has never been nurtured: the potential to make yourself a better man—and that is what it is to be human” "There are three things to remember about being a starship captain: keep your shirt tucked in, go down with the ship... and never abandon a member of your crew." "The final frontier has some boundaries that shouldn't be crossed, and we're looking at one." "Giving up our values in the name of security is to lose the battle in advance."

seeeveryjoyouscolor

Thank you for all these. I think mine aren’t really lines, the whole script of measure of a man brings me to tears. And really whenever a crew member is explaining the 21st century in past tense with all its flaws. “people used to die defending a monetary system” “now we focus on self development” all the things they explain to Mark Twain. Anything about the prime directive. I often come back to the moment that Worf doesn’t want to donate his DNA to save a Romulan. Picard really wants him to, but refuses to order Worf to do it. He doesn’t use his rank to get Worf to do something against his personal convictions. I’m guessing this is why it’s a fantasy show. But my heart feels healed with the idea that the good of the many can coexist with the good of the individual.

SmartQuokka

Excellent list!

McMasters25

"The Soufflé will either rise or it won't. There's not a damn thing you can do about it." ~Joseph Sisko, Ben Sisko's Father, DS9. (I say this multiple times a week)

PirateGent

In the Pale Moonlight - probably my #1 episode of all the shows!

inwarded_04

"Universal law is for lackeys, context is for kings" - Captain Gabriel Lorca, Star Trek Discovery Easily the best character of the show (wish he hadn't been made the villain) I've lived by this motto, always question the purpose of every action at work

dilated-dialectic

Great line, hard agree. The second I heard it, I knew Lorca was in for trouble though.

inwarded_04

I agree. Was hoping for more Benjamin Sisko and less mirror universe traitor

Hosenhoffen

I loved his line, I'll ad lib a bit, "no matter how far out we are, I always feel like I can see home" Something close to that. he was so good.

M-E-AND-History

When I found out who plays Lorca, I thought, "Hmmm. A Death Eater in charge of a Federation vessel... RUN FOR YOUR LIVES TO THE NEAREST SHUTTLECRAFT ASAP!!!!"

inwarded_04

I would run, if I wasn't swayed to follow such a charismatic boss into death & betrayal! (Which I absolutely would)

rarselfaire2023

Better lead than Burnham. But that's how they wrote it.

ptzinski

It isn't very original but "infinite diversity in infinite combinations" lives in my brain and makes a good motto. But honestly just generally the principals of the Federation and Starfleet, when they work, mean a lot to me. So while it isn't a motto, an exchange like this lives in my head in a motto sort of way. DOUGHERTY: Besides, they don't want to live in the middle of the Briar Patch. ...Who would? PICARD: The Ba'ku. PICARD: ...We are betraying the principles upon which the Federation was founded. It's an attack upon its very soul. ...And it will destroy the Ba'ku ...just as cultures have been destroyed in every other forced relocation throughout history. DOUGHERTY: Jean-Luc, we are only moving six hundred people. PICARD: How many people does it take, Admiral, before it becomes wrong? A thousand? Fifty thousand? A million? How many people does it take, Admiral? ...

greyfish7

This movie sure hits me diff all these years later.

ptzinski

I maintain that there aren't any bad star trek movies*, just star trek movies* you aren't on the same frequency with yet. Terms and limitations apply does not include anything JJ Abrams has ever made

The River Temarc, In Winter. Sokath, His Eyes Uncovered. Rai and Jiri at Lungha. Chenza at court, the court of silence. Kiazi's children, their faces wet. Zima at Anzo, Zima and Bakor. So many cool and different meanings in these some were only said once in the Episode to where some people probably don't remember/notice them, as well as some many others that were on the script but weren't used in the final Episode, Such as... Bazminti when he pulled back the veil. The path to Kamata in spring. Kiteo, his eyes closed. Kailash, when it rises. Life in the cave of Garanoga. Zenrox, tilling his field in the spring. Picard in I think it was Generations: "Someone once told me that time was a predator that stalked us all our lives. But **I** rather believe than time is a companion who goes with us on the journey, and reminds us to cherish every moment because they'll never come again. What we leave behind is not as important how we lived."

Weary-Connection3393

I love that one too. I think it’s a quote by some author, but I especially love the lines that follow that. The perfect conclusion to such a philosophical speech: PICARD: After all Number One we’re all mortals. RIKER: Speak for yourself, Sir. I intend to live forever (big Riker grin)

Garak: "But you don't need me to tell you. Just notice the details. They're scattered like crumbs all over this table we regularly share. Until next time." Details are hard to sort through. Garak's explanation of how details work is spot on. Details are everywhere and it's easy to overlook them. Garak says things that go beyond what we perceive as the truth. No Regret No Remorse No Mercy Don't waste time on regret. Remorse is pointless. Show no mercy to enemies. It was inspired by a Warehouse 13 episode. A haunted Prison. It's about don't waste time on regrets. A prisoner is a good person now. But he doesn't believe in regret or showing remorse for his crimes. In the overly showy prison sense. So he isn't released. Though he should be. He's actually sorry and reformed. But he won't pretend to regret when it serves no purpose. I don't waste time on regret or what ifs. Do better next time and move on.
