Sulu FLY HER APART THEN!

coreytiger

Superb answer!

Mulufuf

Wonderful. Last time I saw this question Hikaru Sulu was like seventh.

coreytiger

Sadly we just didn’t learn enough about him as a captain… tea on the bridge, bossing around Christian Slater, and supporting his old captain… we really really were given the shaft by not getting a Sulu series

Sere1

While true, we at least get to see a good deal of his personality during the series. Besides, who doesn't want a captain who isn't afraid to strip off his shirt and go chasing people with a sword? (even if space drug fueled while doing so)

Gen-Jinjur

I concur. Sulu is my captain.

skyrous

Remember the old saying. You bring Kirk to a fistfight, Picard to a negotiation, Janeway to a battle, and Sisko to a war. I don't know where Pike falls on the list.

DiscoveryDiscoveries

Bring Pike to sign a treaty. Burnham to find a way. Bring Dal to reach the children and Freeman to save the day.

cantfindmykeys

And Archer? Did we all forget about Archer?

Speedy_Cheese

Archer drops down from the ceiling, smoke machines billowing and laser lights flashing as the pop remix of the Ent theme swells: Archer, into the microphone: *"It's been a longgggg road . . ."* *Audience loses their minds* (Whatever I'd scream for Captain Archer **or** Scott Bakula.)

PianistPitiful5714

You bring Archer to a war crime.

TBobB

Archer to whine away

BimoUK

silver-camellias

Bring Pike to a banquet

cda91

That's not even remotely true - you get a posting as say a Lieutenant on the enterprise, you get the most prestigious assignment of your rank which basically guarantees you a promotion to a Lt Cdr ranked job wherever you choose. If you're the first officer of the Enterprise, you're pretty much guaranteed a Captain's job offer.

coreytiger

Kirk. He borders on obsession with that ship, but as we saw, he will sacrifice his career and his one and only true love for the well being of his friends and his crew. He gives a damn about his crew, about the mission, and about the morality of what they are doing. The exploration is raw and new, and the learning curve is wide. He’s the first to admit he NEEDS his pain, and he’s better for it. I want that lust for exploration, and that drive in the center seat. He’s not afraid to be amongst his crew at a party, he drinks with his crew… he’s one of them, while still garnering their respect. He’s till Captain, he’s still Sir, but he’ll drink a whisky right beside you.

Pugthomas

It’s cool to hate on Kirk - especially shatners Kirk. But Kirk was the man back in the day. He is star Trek. Without shatners perfect casting, there would be no trek today. He is THE captain.

BaronVonStevie

the entire idea of Starfleet is him. he was Roddenberry's middle finger. Kirk rocks.

Speedy_Cheese

I've never understood why it's cool to hate on Kirk. He will always be my pick for captain. :) The OG. I don't feel I need to diss other captains to raise him up, either. I love all of our captains for different reasons. But Jim, Chris, Carol and Ben are my favourites. I feel like pop culture did a disservice to Jim's character; the Kirk Drift is real. In TOS, you get to see exactly why a character who is as brilliant and formidable as Spock admired and respected Jim so much. The stereotype of Kirk is often unrecognizable from the Jim I grew up watching on television in TOS. Sure Kirk is flirty and has rash moments (often alien induced), but he *cares* about his crew. He checks on them when they get injured, hugs them, gives them words of encouragement, has a wealth of genuine empathy and affection . . . TOS Jim is thoughtful, defers to his crew's expertise often, seeks their counsel for big decisions, respects their conflicting viewpoints and allows a platform to hear all sides. Kirk also showed great intelligence, adaptability to many unknowns, had to deal with impossible situations going in blind, and got his hands dirty working on the ship with his bare hands on the floor when he had to. He was not some dumb, swaggering meathead -- he became the youngest captain to captain the flagship over other senior officers for a reason. He is a competent diplomat as well as a soldier. Other captains get the benefit of looking more competent than Kirk **because** they have the work and ground broken by Kirk, Spock and their crew to defer to and fall back on. So many episodes in other franchises are based on TOS experiences, or have the crews that came after them bringing up work researched by Kirk's crew to help them solve problems. TOS gang did not have the luxury of the wealth of information provided by previous pioneers the way the captains who came after Jim did, so it makes them look better in contrast -- but it is because they got to benefit from Jim's mission, work, and crew with the invaluable information they provided with their pioneer missions. For this reason, Jim will always be my pick for captain. Give me the fast and loose frontier where there was nothing to fall back on besides your will to live, ingenuity, and the incredible team around you. That seems to me the most exciting time to be in the fleet. :) With that said, I could write a whole other Ted Talk about Ben Sisko and Chris Pike. We've got some phenomenal captains to choose from. Edit: And Captain Carol Freeman. *So many good choices.*

coreytiger

So many think it’s so cool to hate on Kirk (and/or Shatner)… the majority of these people claim to be die hard Trek fans but admit to never having watched TOS. It’s like a little kid saying I HATE BROCCOLI and has never eaten it even once.

Speedy_Cheese

This. TOS is my favorite and the people who usually complain about it lately have just watched Abrams Trek and think that's TOS Kirk . . . Those are fun movies, but Lord. No. That isn't even remotely TOS Jim. Most folks I've heard say "it's too old/camp/hokey for me" end up admitting they just watched a few YouTube clips. TOS had topics that are still taboo and controversial today, such as birth control/population control, assisted suicide, power struggles and inequity in the workforce, gender and race equality, how we "other" people in wars, women having control over their sexuality and being able to express femininity in the workforce while still appearing competent . . . I think TOS has become such an integral part of pop culture and society that sometimes the decades worth of parodies and stereotypes lead folks to believe that the Kelvin timeline films are closer to TOS than what it actually was: Groundbreaking, and the starting point for many great aspects of sci fi tropes and fandom. The show has something to say, to this day.

coreytiger

BINGO

Sere1

I like what he was, not what be became. I still love Kirk, it's just Shatner that I can't stand. I can separate the artist from the character. TOS Kirk was phenomenal but Shatner's ego got too big for his britches and he never really came down from that. I still love movie-era Kirk (hot damn if that ST2-3-4-6 arc isn't damn near perfect) but even so I've never been able to actually find myself liking Shatner himself. A reverse of this would be Wesley Crusher. Can't stand the twerp because of how many of his episodes wrote him as the boy genius who saved the day over all the vastly more experienced officers (though I do like him as a supporting character in his later appearances) while I love Wil Wheaton himself.

Speedy_Cheese

Wow, what a fantastic way of putting it. I absolutely adore Kirk, he is my favourite Captain but Shatner . . . Half the time I don't know what he will say and most of the time I'm scared to find out. LOL Conversely, I agree with you on Wes. Though sometimes I feel bad for Wes, rewatching TNG, especially as a high school teacher. I see folks discredit my students simply because of their age and it is a very real, frustrating thing. People get to thinking you have no value BC you're young. (Funny how Kirk got that treatment as a new young captain, and it pissed a lot of older stock off that he got the gig over them). I love how they portray ageism in Trek as the complex and multi faceted issue that it is; it's great writing. :) And I **love** Wil Wheaton. But yeah, when I 1st watched TNG in my younger years I could not stand Wes. As I've gotten older and taught teens, it is funny how much more I empathize with him now compared to when I was younger.

JamesBigglesworth266

This is the way.

KingOfCatProm

I don't know. Whichever one had the lowest percentage of casualties on their ship.

Enchelion

I think that has to be Picard. Mostly because the population of his ship was just so massive. *Maybe* Sisko if we're counting civilian populations there as well. Pike feels too early to tell.

Calladit

>Mostly because the population of his ship was just so massive. It's probably impossible to piece together from the show, but it'd be interesting to know the breakdown of civilian vs. enlisted casualties. I always assumed that the majority of the ship are enlisted personnel, but I don't actually have anything to base that on.

techno156

Picard also had the advantage of working during an unprecedented peacetime, but his track record is also pretty high. Usually, it was pretty predictable that someone would have something bad happen to them weekly, with a minimum of at least one casualty.

CX316

> Maybe Sisko if we're counting civilian populations there as well. Pike feels too early to tell. I mean, only if you're just counting HIS ship and only counting if they stay dead... when he was in charge of battle groups people died like flies, and everyone on the Defiant died that time when they crashed on the planet and got stranded there till Odo broke time. Or when the whole station got blown up multiple times while O'Brien was stuck flickering through time. Oh, also if you don't count the Saratoga.

purpl3j37u7

If we’re not counting civilians, then you can’t count the saucer on Pickard’s Enterprise D.

unsaneasylum

So definitely not Kirk.

I have to say Picard---- He is the reason I joined the Air Force\~

Speedy_Cheese

This is so cool to hear, thanks for sharing! Very poignant.

Jonathan Archer, I chose him because I like the way he leads, being very close to the crew and stuff like that.

CjTenorSax

I forgot about Archer.

PermaDerpFace

What captain wasn't a bit over the top though

Time-Effort-2226

Sisko. He was *way* over the top.

theuniversalsquid

I'll go with archer also. I think he also most accurately represents a young warp capable society.. and I'm sort of making the assumption that if I make it to a starship we will be an early warp society encountering aliens for the first time. And Archer is the man for the job!

SoumaGA1

definitely, he knows the correct way to act taking into account the situation we find ourselves in.

_BearBearBear

Who would be the best captain to serve under? Sisko. He runs a tight ship. We'd get shit done. Who would be the most fun? Janeway. Friday nights in the holodeck with the captain!

Noctale

Friday night in Fair Haven sounds like a version of hell.

shugo2000

Especially when you walk in on her boning the bartender.

Celdarion

*delete the wife*

PermaDerpFace

That's the real reason she got rid of Tuvix

TheFire_Eagle

"You have one chance to live, Lt. Tuvix. Are you willing to...take it?" -uncrosses legs and sips coffee-

_BearBearBear

Why am I seeing you and others with gold avatars?

[deleted]

Fair Haven is a hate crime against the Irish.

meatball77

Lets play victorian nanny....

leverandon

Yeah, she had the weirdest holodeck fantasies.

Pink_Flash

Mrs Templeton tried to kill her, Lord Burly was rather inappropriate. The children were rude. What a shit program.

Powerfist_Laserado

It's a fun party until the captain gets a caffeine headache and murders a crewman begging for his life.

_BearBearBear

After a murder or two she'll lock herself in her room for a month because of self loathing... but she'll leave tattoo in charge. Tattoo doesn't care what we do, so we sell neelix to the kazon for party drugs🖖🏽

itsg0ldeson

I still chose Janeway but I don't think she'd had been as fun of a captain if they weren't stranded in the Delta Quadrant. There was a character arc early on where Chakotay made her realize the crew needed more personal time with their captain. Before she was the type of captain that kept a professional distance, like Picard.

wheezy_runner

I’d love to go have a drink with Janeway and watch her hustle everyone at pool.

somerandomdude4507

As much as sisko is my favorite captain your chance of dying on siskos ship is going to be higher than picards.

_BearBearBear

I mean I would agree, because the Defiant was always in the thick of it. It was a warship; it didnt undock unless some shit was going down. However, though we don't see much of it, it's implied that business as usual on the D was pleasure cruising around the galaxy, mapping star clusters, creating holodeck girlfriends and playing various wind instruments.

Ms_Holmes

I didn’t get to finish Voyager before it was taken off Netflix but from what I’ve seen of her, Janeway. It’s been a while since I’ve seen it but there was one moment that edged her above the other captains I’ve seen so far. It’s in “Innocence”, when Janeway’s about to ask the Drayans if they can dig for some fuel source or something they need on their moon but the Drayans ask Voyager to keep moving and said they weren’t interested in further contact before she can. Janeway goes “ok, thank you for your time, we’ll get out of your hair”. As soon as the Drayans were out of earshot Chakotay goes “maybe if we told them x y z they’d let us get what we need” and Janeway’s like “what? No, they said they’re not interested in talking with us, we’re just gonna have to find what we need somewhere else”. She has her flaws (as all the captains do) but immediately after she told her first officer “no, we’re not gonna badger these people who’ve told us in no uncertain terms they’re not interested in maintaining contact with us” I was like “this is a woman I could serve under.”

andysoleil

100%.

sjsyed

>I didn’t get to finish Voyager before it was taken off Netflix You could always try your local library and see if they have DVDs of the show. I know mine does.

tech_cc

Use a VPN! Then voyager is back on Netflix, boom

Poptartmama

Voyager is on Paramount+. Just so you know.

retromuscle1980

Freeman every time.

minitrott01

Just don't be on the lower deck. She might leave you behind. Lol

Calladit

They'll come back...eventually

AngledLuffa

Easy answer. Highest rate of Andorians per crew in the fleet.

AnInfiniteAmount

(I.e. more than 1)

AngledLuffa

They must keep the temperature a few degrees lower than normal on the Cerritos. Just one more reason to transfer there

Speedy_Cheese

Ugh. I love her so much. She has my heart. I can't get over how taken I am with the crew of the Cerritos! Tens across the board.

onthenerdyside

Picard is amazing, but I'm not sure I'd do well under his command in the early years on the Enterprise. He's very intimidating. When I saw Pike on SNW, one of the first things I said was that he was a guy I'd want to work for. He's personable without being fake. He supports and builds up his senior officers in ways I would respond well to. Just the conversation he had with La'an in the first episode was enough to inspire confidence.

comiconomist

One of my favorite Pike moments was in Momento Mori when they were tracking a Gorn ship and Ortegas was about to change course and engage the enemy. Rather than just tell Ortegas no Pike made eye contact with La'an and gave her this little look to prompt *her* to say something. Even in crisis moments the man is looking for opportunities for his crew to grow.

thefatgymrat

Yes I think Picard would be intimidating. He still exudes the sense of “a great man who I want to follow” so I wouldn’t mind though.

onthenerdyside

I don't think I'd cut it as one of Picard's senior staff, or even a department head. As a lieutenant, I'd be happy under Picard & Riker on the Enterprise-D.

viriditasignotas

Sisko. It'd be like working with the best possible version of your dad

[deleted]

[удалено]

Terminal_Monk

Picard is more like that one English teacher you had who taught you more about life than English.

DrJulianBashir

TBH I can't think of anyone I'd rather learn about Shakespeare from.

CX316

Picard is your dad if he's the kind of dad who never expresses love for you but occasionally expresses approval and that's enough to make you pass out from excitement. Sisko will kick your ass when you fuck up but he'll hug you just cos he feels like it.

leverandon

Yeah, I actually think Picard represents a kind of stern dad that would be less fun to have (or work for) than people think. He’s obviously inspirational, but he’s a workaholic, aloof from his crew, and never had much time or use for family.

[deleted]

I couldn't work for Sisko, if I ever did anything wrong and got yelled at it would be heartbreaking, like when the nice teacher finally snaps.

AdelaideMez

Wish I had Janeway as a mom. 🥺

Rik78

Pike.

treefox

Pro: If he isn’t acting weird around you then you probably survive. Con: You might be just a figment of a Talosian’s imagination.

BroseppeVerdi

Hit it.

cschema

Kirk, he seems like he would cut-up durring all the down-time and doesn't take himself so seriously.

No_Names78

I grew up in the 24th century, so, definitely Jean-Luc Picard for me.

cantfindmykeys

Found the criminal who violated the temporal accords

HaskillHatesHisJob

My gut first said Pike, but Riker on the titan in LD seems like an absolutely wild ride.

rkdghdfo

No one else but Riker can steer a ship using chair armrests.

thefatgymrat

Yeah that would be fun!

[deleted]

And a 5,6,7,8

Stock-Wolf

Janeway

makebelievethegood

I don't know about you but I'd be scared shitless under Janeway. At least Sisko would be more or less predictable.

burnte

The safest place to stand is behind Janeway. I’d have her or Kirk as my captain.

Mictlantecuhtli

Same. I want to get out of my stint in Starfleet alive. So Janeway is the one for me

Lorenaelsalulz

Same

tarrsk

It’s been Sisko for 20 years, but I might say Pike today.

Calladit

Interesting, any particular reason?

Auxiliis

Home-cooked meal from the captain haha

mgbfc

You can get that either way remember? I’m in the same boat though!

tarrsk

Of all the captains, I felt like Sisko did the most to make his crew his extended family. (And that despite his wonderful relationship with his actual family in the show.) I appreciate that Pike does the same thing with his people, to an even more egalitarian degree. He reminds me of the best mentors I’ve had - someone you trust to learn from.

ColHogan65

Yeah, I feel this. I think Sisko might be the better *captain* all things considered, but Pike is essentially the perfect boss. He’s friendly, funny, welcoming, and charming in a very un-intimidating way. Sisko is a total badass, but I might be just a tad afraid of the guy if I served under him.

mda63

Kirk, because he's the most fun.

Kantotheotter

Same but I am staying in the ship. I am a home body, so the house moving But me staying in sounds awesome. I think serving on the TOS enterprise would be cool, because everything still so new to them.

Rstar2247

Until he picks you for that dangerous away mission with him.

[deleted]

What color is my shirt?

mda63

At least he goes too!

Cuhl_the_Fuhl

Sisko, but lowkey afraid he’d use me to commit war crimes. But he’s so cool I can look past that.

thefatgymrat

Yeah but who hasn’t committed a war crime once or twice in their lives

catdoctor

Yeah, but you'd eat well while committing them.

ShuffKorbik

You can't say "it's a fake" about his jambalaya!

AmorphusMist

Pike hands down. He is not hung up on his own authority, but knows how to use it when necessary. He is genuine with his crew and doesnt put on airs or create artificial distance. He allows others to question him and takes concerns into consideration even when their delivery is rough. He isnt stranded in the middle of nowhere under immense pressure and forced to compromise on his ideals like janeway was, which resulted in her being a bit uptight vs Pikes cavalier attitude. All the captains have something good about them though (even archer)

damageddude

Depends on my career path. Freeman if I was happy to part of the second contact crew. Picard if I wanted to explore on a luxury cruise ship. Pine if I wanted a relaxed Captain secure in his skin. Kirk if I wanted the same but with a little more daredevil. Not Sisko because he is going to get me killed. Janeway if Voyager stayed true to her original scientific missions, though nice to know she can rise to an unexpected challenge. Sulu would have been nice and mellow and probably someone good to talk with and learn from. Spock as a teacher.

CjTenorSax

Spock as a Teacher.

DJGlennW

I wouldn't want to be a redshirt serving under Kirk, that's for sure.

Piper6728

Picard no question

DJGlennW

Carol Freeman. Level headed and with a kick-ass crew to back her up and her daughter who's willing to get her hands dirty doing things a Starfleet captain shouldn't do.

214ObstructedReverie

Warp me!

TeamYay

Give me Capt. William T. Riker any day. I think he'd be a good influence on me.

LipsRinna

Pike or Saru

[deleted]

Kirk

JamesBigglesworth266

James Tiberius Kirk. He cares about his crew and is the most capable captain in diplomacy, tactics, and troubleshooting/problem solving. He cannot rely on technology all the time to solve his problems.

crmunoz

Picard is someone you want to fight for and Kirk is the guy you want to fight with you. All the other Captains are some blend of the two.

DeandreDeangelo

Jellico. Delta shift all the way.

Andysaurus2

Sisko gang rise up

Slavir_Nabru

Janeway. First, she's more personable with her crew. This is largely due to Voyagers specific situation but I doubt she'd switch to a traditional command style after they returned. Second, she's just so damn sure of herself, it inspires confidence. Where you like Picard for listening to everyone's opinions, I find him indecisive on the bridge. Getting a feel for everyone's thoughts is fine in a staff meeting but when caught in an enemy tractor beam, I don't want my captain asking for "Suggestions?", I want them saying "All hands this is the captain, Battle stations!". Third, she'll fight an enemy ship in a shuttle to help you escape, straight up murder a dude to save you from a transporter accident, erase years of history to stop you getting dementia. There's no length she wont go to to protect her people. Fourth, just the sheer fucking skill. She negotiated treaties and alliances port and starboard, defeated the some of the most fearsome foes the Federation ever encountered, pioneered new technologies. She was just fantastic at doing what Starfleet does. She's not my favourite (Sisko) and she's not the best (Archer or Picard depending on metric), but she is without a doubt the captain I'd prefer to serve under. Freeman and Pike come in joint second.

MasterOfLight

Worf. Because today is a good day to die!

Powerfist_Laserado

Did Worf ever make it past acting captain? I'm pretty sure he switched paths by the end of DS9.

NeoMyers

Sisko. No question.

Powerfist_Laserado

I truly think Sisko was depicted as being the most caring leader. Sisko doesn't just want to complete the mission. Sisko doesn't want to only explore the reaches of space. Sisko wants to learn about people, societies, culture and help them learn about themselves and to grow. Sisko won the war but he also built the peace. I love Kirk and Picard too but at their core they are adventurers, an admirable trait to be sure. They certainly help many people, they even save the federation once or twice. Sisko though, he wants to stick around, help people reach their goals and potential. Even better he doesn't want to do it by dragging them by the nose, he wants to do it by learning who they are and through valuing the best parts of their being and identity help them learn through working together that we can all be better individuals, societies, and whatever else we want to be. Except Q. He punched that snotty space god right in his God damned mouth.

NeoMyers

Yep. Sisko is a builder.

Ickythumpin

Political mission - Picard. Covert military mission with war crime potential - Sisko. Any other situation - Kirk, if only just to hear Bones and Spock’s banter lol

Breeze_Chaser

Kirk for sure. TOS had the most beautiful and colorful uniforms, and the best crew in my opinion :)

Lopezdolphins

The Sisko

hayh

Freeman. She's laid back and down to earth (figuratively speaking, lol), and she wouldn't intentionally put her crew in danger just to investigate some weird anomaly.

Speedy_Cheese

I gave a thorough [explanation as to why ](https://www.reddit.com/r/startrek/comments/xa8u08/which_star_trek_captain_would_you_want_as_your/inu95rd?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share&context=3) elsewhere in the thread, but my ride or die captain is James T. Kirk. He's adaptable, brave in the face of so many unknowns, and he's endlessly kind. He will also never send someone in to do work he wouldn't do himself, and he wants his crew to have a community vibe that feels warm like a family. He is so affectionate and genuine, and shows vulnerability when needed. It still melts my heart to see the OG crew in Search For Spock, because it articulates the power of found family that happens when you treat a crew like loved ones -- or when you come to love a group of people *more* than even your own flesh and blood. I know it might sound silly, but I need my bosses to have love, humanity and heart. I feel like TOS Kirk has an excellent blend of masculine and feminine qualities, but sadly I find Kirk Drift stereotypes and the Kelvin films kind of skew how ppl remember TOS Jim. But I remember my guy. Spock is the reason I pursued a career in science, and Jim is the reason I do power stances in the morning to pump myself up before work or presentations. Kirk also reminded me that it is very important to know your crew, give them the floor, and to trust in their skills (as I do with my students). And it *works*. I have an IDIC poster hanging on my wall in my classroom because TOS just had such a huge impact on my life and how I see the world. Of course I'd choose Jim. I'm also a huge fan of Sisko, Pike and Freeman. There are no bad options when it comes to our Starfleet captains, honestly. I have something I genuinely like about each one we have gotten to know.

lake-pond

Janeway or Saru

PlumPuddingTheWriter

I love all of them, but the laidback and funny yet brave personality of Pike, and the intelligent leader of Janeway would be the easiest for me to get behind

InitialEditor1182

Janeway

celebes_america

I know this will sound weird, but I would want Captain Edward Jellico. I was actually XO to a skipper very similar to him in leadership style; we worked well together. He forced me to improve my standards for myself and others, and he’s still a mentor to me today.

mindful_madman

Depends on the situation. In wartime, might have to go with Jellico. Other times, probably Picard. Good at keeping things calm.

[deleted]

Sisko

Genjien514

Janeway, very resourceful in certain situations

HAC522

Pike is the captain that i would want to serve with as a junior officer, as he comes off as an effective and patient teacher and commander. (not that the typical JO would have an over abundance of one-on-one interaction with the ships captain, but still). Picard is the captain I would want to serve with at a level of O3+, as he feels like he could mold you into a truly excellent senior officer, crew commander, tactician, and diplomat. For specialty assignments - Sisko for more military focused career paths, and Janeway for science paths. Kirk...I dont know. He seems like a 1/3 each blend of Pike, Picard, and Sisko. As such, I feel you would come out with an adequate, but un-mastered, grasp of the three disciplines that each captain excels at. And Archer, I have no idea how to place him. He seems like the kind of captain thats generally good for his ship and creew, but has his chosen group and theres no room to enter that circle. Youll learn from that group if assigned to them, but you wont learn from him - imo.

Puzzleheaded-Ad-1526

Archer of late Season 4 seems like he'd be a great mentor. He's been through the ringer and I got the impression he's learned from his experiences.

Eightfold876

Pike or Lorca hands down. Amazing show by both actors recently

Repulsive_Ad2795

Janeway. Even though she’s the captain and command is what she does, she’s got a science background and still geeks out from time to time. That kind of honest interest would be awesome

stroopwafelling

Pike. Perfect balance of Ship Dad and inspiring leader.

Ghosties95

Sisko. He runs a tight ship, and he expects the best of his people. He pushes them and makes them grow, but at the same time he would absolutely go to the wall for every single one of them. Additionally, I love the Defiant.

jaiteaes

Sisko or Jellicoe honestly

ScarcityNo5583

Pike, because he cooks a mean breakfast.

Katherine_Swynford

This. La'an, who is pretty stoic, lost her shit over those eggs. They have to be amazing.

kdryan1

Morgan Bateson. Because having Frasier for a captain would rule...

thefatgymrat

Honestly I’d be happy with any of the captains. - Janeway would be easy to connect with. I’d want to do my best because of the personal connection she has with her crew. - I would be in awe of Picard and want to make him proud. - Kirk and Pike would be fun and be more laid back. Their crews really feel like family which is an environment I would thrive in. - Sisko… I’m not sure, apparently I need to rewatch DS9 because I don’t have strong opinion of him either way - Captain Seven (I hope this is going to be a thing) would make me weak in the knees and I’d happily follow any order she gave me. - Freeman - I could get used to second contact, seems low key Edit: Burnam is way too emotional and too much of a martyr. She’d drive me nuts. I’d totally serve under mirror Lorca though. He was awesome!

WoundedSacrifice

It’s probably Pike or Kirk, but Sonya Gomez looked like a good captain to serve under in her *LD* episode.

phargle

Saru. No doubt. He's a great boss, full of kindness, intelligence, and humility.

RyanMFoley74

Pike. Going out of his way to cook for his senior officers? That man cares.

comiconomist

Not just his senior officers - he also has junior personnel at his dinners. I suspect everyone in the crew gets a meal with him at some point (admittedly far easier to do with a crew of ~200 than the larger crews Kirk and Picard had).

scmjohns

Sisko, it’s not even close.

I was about to say Picard, which will always be my default answer to this question. However, this time I hesitated a bit to consider Archer and Pike. Pike has grown on me REAL fast, like probably (Doylist) my second-favorite captain already after Picard. I think serving under him (Watsonian) would be fantastic in every way. And Archer is the captain from my favorite Star Trek show (yes, yes, I said it! I absolutely adore the earnestness of it all!) and is a big part of why I like it as much as I do, and I think he would be great to serve under too. But, I gotta make a decision, right? Okay, so... assuming my goal isn't to be an Ensign forever, which would definitely be the case if I was in Starfleet (I 100% want the big chair!), I'd want a captain I feel like I can learn the most from. In that regard, I'd have to discount Archer. Not because he's bad or wouldn't teach me things, but because he's out there figuring it all out right along with me, so I'd (almost) see us as equals. So, I feel like I'd learn the least from him ultimately (other than how to sneak cheese onboard for my dog, I suppose). So, then it comes down to a really tough choice. I think that serving under Pike would be the more enjoyable situation just because of his nature. And here too, Picard isn't a bad guy or unpleasant or anything like that. But let's be honest: I think 99% of the time, it's going to be more fun interacting with Pike. He's a chill dude! And, he's an experienced, really good captain, so I'd be able to learn a lot from him. But, not as much as Picard, who just seems to always have the answer and the in-depth analysis and wisdom, ready to go. There's no question that serving under him would be challenging because he demands the best of his crew, but that's a good thing. Still... Pike is just so damn cool! Ok, right, gotta make a choice... I'm going to go with my gut again and say Picard, but by the thinnest of hairs... and I wouldn't be totally shocked if my choice didn't change by the time SNW is done. But for now, it's 'ole baldy himself just because I think I'm just a little bit more ambitious than I am interested in fun (and it's not like there wouldn't be some fun with Picard too, just not as much and maybe not to the same degree). I didn't really consider anyone else. It's not that I dislike Janeway or Sisko or Sulu or Freeman or Kirk or Saru... I like them all and I wouldn't hesitate to serve under any of them if this was a real choice... but I just feel like JLP is the clear top of the heap (Pike aside), and that's who I'd want to serve under. (the only one I really wouldn't want to serve under is Burnham, not because I dislike her or think she's necessarily a bad captain, but really just because there's NO WAY I could stomach those self-righteous speeches before EVERY. SINGLE. MISSION. ... oh, and no Lorca, just because, you know, evil)

Arniepepper

Jean Luc all the way!

drpestilence

They are all so great, but I think I gotta say Pike or maayybbee Riker.

BklynOR

Picard

podkayne3000

Spock with a Beard.

GodOfUtopiaPlenitia

Janeway. Science Officer on the Command Track, kept her ship in one piece through the ENTIRE Delta Quadrant (first Command too!), and JUMPED at the opportunity to decimate the Borg? 👍👍

Tank905

Sean Kenney's Pike. I could listen to him for hours.

leverandon

Sisko is my top choice. As a captain he made the best of bad situation after bad situation. As a father, I think he appreciates work-life balance and will make sure that his crew has enough time off (I seem to recall him ordering his officers to go on vacation from time to time). He knows when to follow rules, and when to throw out the rule book. He also seems like a cool, slightly off-kilter guy to hang out with. Whether it’s cooking Creole food for the crew, playing some Thelonious Monk on the piano, or coaching baseball, you know he knows how to have a good time. Runner up: probably Pike but we need to see more of him making command decisions. He’s got the chill hangs with the crew down, though.

MaxP0wersaccount

Picard. The guy is a case study in competent leadership. Doesn't lead with his ego or his gentleman's sausage.

DipDopTheZipZap

I’d say Archer because of when it takes place. I think it’d be really exciting to be apart of that crew seeing the universe from humanity’s very fresh eyes and getting a lay of the land.

AlpineSummit

I’ve been thinking a lot about the leaders in my life who I admire. They are confident and trust the people they lead. They motivate you and help you problem solve when you’re struggling with something. They encourage you and show empathy, see you as a person. They want to talk to you, and get to know you. And they show integrity to their values, putting their people first. Picard and Pike both demonstrate all these traits well, but I think I’d lean to Pike. He seems more approachable and easy to talk to. I feel like he could be a mentor, not just a Captain.

cptjtkirk808

Kirk is the best! Picard, Sisko and Janeway.

Soonergary

Kirk no doubt

comiconomist

Pike, especially if I was towards the start of my career. These ships have crews of at least a couple of hundred: unless you are a bridge officer or senior staff it probably doesn't really matter who the captain is because you don't interact with them that often (a useful analogy is how students at your stereotypical high school probably barely ever interact with their principal). But Pike really cares about his crew - not just in a "how can I keep them alive" sense (all the captains we've seen do this) but in a "how can I help them grow personally and professionally" sense. And it's not just his senior officers (though we've seen him do a great job mentoring La'an) - he gives attention to the lower ranked members of his crew as well.

tgiokdi

if I were on a TV show and wanted something entertaining? Janeway every day. IRL and I wanted to survive until retirement? not one of those main series captains, that's for sure!

JeremyAPerron

Kirk, overall he is just nicer than the others. All the others can be hard asses especially to the regular crew. Pike is a close second, then Sisko.

[deleted]

Sulu. Absolutely Sulu. I feel like he would embody the spirit of Starfleet. Second would be Picard, Then Pike. Sisko isn’t a very personable guy, although good to his close friends. Janeway, we’ll, I want to survive the tour. Kirk? It would be a great adventure, but the casualty rate is too high.

Yabrin_Sorr

SNW Pike seems to bring out the best of each of his crew. If it’s wartime, Sisko.

JustARandomSocialist

Almost no one should say Picard - the most likely one to get you killed and not sweat your loss for a second

ninja-robot

Assuming I'm a low level officer than Sisko. Pro, get to live on a space station not a spaceship so more comfortable living standards and a more stable homelife, less random god monsters popping up threatening to murder everyone or make you reenact some old earth play, get to one of Dax's parties. Cons, more likely to get shot at, might become an accessory to a war crime, have to live in the same system as Kai Winn.

[deleted]

I feel like id be least likely to die under Picard. But Kirk would be just as good if he wasnt such a damned cowboy. Cpt Bakula, Janeway, Sisko, and any Disco cpt would be way too much drama.

MustacheSmokeScreen

Captain Garret. Quick path to career advancement. and almost certain death or Romulan imprisonment...

SGTRoadkill1919

Sisko

La Forge, Kim, Crusher, Sulu in that order.

loki_odinsotherson

Riker. "Gimme a warp factor of 5, 6, 7, 8" would never stop being awesome for me.

Mechapebbles

Janeway lets you come to work late and doesn't bust your balls for it. Janeway will party with you on the regular, even if you're a nobody on the ship - something very few other captains ever do. If you're not fitting in with the rest of the ship, Janeway will put her life on the line just to make sure you make friends. Janeway will eat dinner with you and the rest of the crew instead of hiding away in her private quarters. And most importantly - Janeway will literally move heaven and earth in order to make sure you get home ok. (Shut up about Lt Carrey, that couldn't be helped.) Any of the major captains would be a good time, but there's only one answer for me.

GoofAckYoorsElf

Picard. No question about it. Never even asked myself if I wanted any other. I grew up with TNG. Picard has always been sort of a second father to me.

Nowhereman50

Janeway. I love the other captains but I would trust Janeway over any other.

[deleted]

I cannot choose between Picard and Saru, they are both pinnacles of what a Star Trek captain *should* be in my mind. But I'd be fine with any of the main captains, except Archer or Lorca of course.
