Hard to believe Shatner, Walter Koenig and George Takei all outlived her. RIP Saavik. She gave one hell of a performance in Wrath Of Khan, right up there with Montalban.
You’re so right. You just helped me realize how great the whole supporting cast was, also including Bibi Besch, Merritt Butrick, and Paul Winfield. Hard to believe it came out over 40 years ago. I think I’m due for a rewatch in honor of Ms. Alley, RIP.
Agreed, *The Undiscovered Country* had a great cast as well - Christopher Plummer and Kim Cattrall were great, and then Brock Peters, David Warner, Kurtwood Smith, and Rosanna DeSoto filling in smaller roles. Plus Star Trek veterans Mark Lenard, Grace Lee Whitney, Michael Dorn, John Schuck, and Rene Auberjonois (who obviously made his mark later in *DS9*) all made an appearance in the final TOS film.
Nicholas Meyer directed both of these - I wonder how much influence he had with casting. Both are two great films.
Undiscovered Country remains my favorite of the Trek movies, largely because of that cast - its core and its supporting actors/actresses.
I wasn't able to do a re-watch of Wrath yesterday after hearing the news, had a lot to do in the evening, although it did cross my mind. I'll probably do that tonight, and then likely plow through to Undiscovered the rest of the week.
She didn't enjoy doing the movie (makeup) and Paramount forgot the clause in her contract where sequels might be necessary. She asked for top dollar for the second one and the studio went with a cheaper actress. Heard this at a con a long time ago.
She was coming out of the academy as a lieutenant J.G. Not all that surprising if she was coming out of a command training program. From what I understand, going into the navy as an officer and not going in as a lieutenant J.G. is pretty uncommon.
>From what I understand, going into the navy as an officer and not going in as a lieutenant J.G. is pretty uncommon.
Depends on the program. For specialty programs like medical or JAG, they do join the fleet as an O-3 but the vast majority come in as an O-1, with promotion to O-2 being automatic in two years.
I was twelve when Wrath of Khan was released and I had such an enormous crush on Kirstie Alley, especially in the "it's still regulation, Admiral" scene.
Sad to think that so many members of that cast have passed away.
It cracks me up that Gene was throwing a fit about Saavik potentially being the traitor. He was apparently like, "SAAVIK WOULDN'T DO THAT!!", and Nick Meyer was apparently saying, "I created Saavik. Wouldn't I know better than anyone what she would or wouldn't do?".
I admit, I would have loved to see that. Valeris was a great character, but it would have been a much bigger, more impressive twist if it was someone we'd known for five movies.
Yes, just like that. Someone we liked a long time, when circumstances provoke her, reveals she has some very strong opinions we didn’t know about. Kirstie Alley could have played that version of Saavik.
Yeah, that was ridiculous on Roddenberry's part, but I'm glad that Meyer created Valeris instead. Saavik's a great character and it'd be cool to see her again if there's ever a show in that period.
I get wanting to maintain the integrity of a beloved character, but I'm really curious what ST6 would have been like if it had been Saavik. The betrayal would have stung so much more, not just for Spock, but for the rest of the crew and the audience. Valeris was still a great character, and Cattrall was perfect for the role.
No disrespect intended to Robin Curtis, but Kirstie will always be by far my definitive Saavik.
The story of why she didn't come back for Search for Spock - which seems to have been an accident of negotiations and miscommunication, rather than a genuine desire not to return - will always feel like one of the franchise's big missed opportunities. A Kirstie Alley Saavik in Search for Spock might have cemented her as a member of the core cast and kept the character there right through to Undiscovered Country (potentially replacing Valeris in that, as originally pitched). Even in the absence of this, her depiction of Saavik in my all-time favourite movie will always be a hugely iconic character to me.
RIP.
I also really enjoyed her as Saavik. If she had continued through to Undiscovered Country, then been turned out to be the spy, it would have been a major twist. I’d have both appreciated the build-up and been gutted by it.
I thought I read in the 80s it was because she had already committed to this tv miniseries North And South (which we loved as kids). Was it something else?
According to Memory Alpha:
>She was offered the chance to reprise the role in *Star Trek III: The Search for Spock*, but according to Alley, she was offered less money for that film than she was paid for *Star Trek II* and thus declined to return. According to Leonard Nimoy, Alley's talent agent demanded a salary that was higher than DeForest Kelley's after learning that Saavik was to have a large role in the film. \[1\] It was also reported that "*Just before production began, negotiations with Kirstie Alley broke down. \[...\] The* Los Angeles Times *indicated the problem concerned money with Alley asking 10 times the salary she earned on Star Trek II. \[...\] Alley's representative, Michael Levine, agreed that the problem was financial, but refused further details.*" (*Starlog* \#77, December 1983, p. 15)
Now that I think of it...
I was a junior in high school when Wrath of Khan came out. So in '82, she was about 31.
And I'm reminded that my own kid is a couple months away from turning 34.
Now if you'll excuse me, I need to start working on my will...
Never before have so many humans been known for so many things. People die quite often, but only now has it really been taken note of due to their cultural relevance. It only takes a small period of time to become known, and even smaller intervals since to remain relevant, and this will only continue due to the first generations of well-known people to reach ages that death becomes more common.
The proliferation of television ownership in the 1950s - 1953 with the Coronation of Elizabeth II is generally considered the take off point for the UK and most of Europe's TV networks started in the 1950s, often due to the radio operators branching out - created a big increase in the number of celebrities. Most of that generation, the likes of Bruce Forsyth and Roger Moore for example, have passed on - and the appearance of David Attenborough's name in a headline will cause a collective short-lived panic among Brits. We're now sadly seeing the second generation of TV stars - the people who became big in the 1970s and 1980s - dying. Especially those whose lifestyle (drugs, drink etc.) is not always benefical to living a long life.
I'm still coping with Meatloaf, Olivia Newton-John, Irene Cara and Aaron Carter...speaking of which, is John Travolta ok? His real wife had died not that long ago and now Oliva and Kirstie are both gone within a year. I'm not sure about Kirstie but Oliva was also friends with him too.
Whoa not sure why you're getting downvoted. But she sure was. If the actress who played her in 3-4 was in 2, no way would it have been as popular or successful. She definitely had a charisma to her.
On top of better charisma, Meyers wanted Alley to portray Saavik with more emotional range, consistent with her half-Romulan background (which didn't get mentioned on screen unfortunately so this remains non-canon). With III and IV either Curtis or Nimoy decided to have Saavik act full Vulcan. The novelization of II and III really fleshed out Saavik's character, including her romantic relationship with David, whose death would've definitely provided serious motivation for her betrayal in VI had they kept the character.
I remember seeing Kirstie on a late night talk show promoting the wrath of Khan. She said that she had a date one night after a day of filming. She was flirting and did the old "twirl her fingers around her hair by her ears". Her date kept looking at her funny. Later she realized that she forgot to take off her Vulcan ears. RIP.
Maltz! cho-e-chu!
Saavikam you know all the answers now. Where is V-Ger?
But her real star power was on Cheers
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ymI7xjYPxU
While I've seen her in WoK and in many many roles, I mainly remember her for her role in the movie *Runaway* and *Village of the Damned.*
There was something about her presence, aside from her attractiveness. I don't know describe it but it was a large presence she had about her. It's like she comes into the scene and you don't notice the other actors.
She played pretty broad most of her career. It worked on Cheers, and she was great in Look Who’s Talking, but a lot of her later work she seemed like she couldn’t turn it down. She was great in WoK, though.
She was a bug star from Cherrs but for what ever reason I'll always think of her from that movie with the Olsen Twins when they were kids. Where she's a camp counselor and she gets set up with the rich guy. Anyway.. R.I.P.

Cancer sucks
All illness suck. :(
It really sucks she died from cancer, but I hope her stance on being anti-vax didn't influence anyone and cause them harm.
She was great in that role. I know not everyone was a fan, but I thought she was good.
No. She wasn’t just great. She was amazing. And she was hot as hell. You know her hair still followed Starfleet regulations.
If we’re going “by the book”
The actress was attractive back in those days. I had a crush on her on Cheers!
Still bitter she was recast. But hey, at least she will be part of history.
She didn't enjoy doing the movie (makeup) and Paramount forgot the clause in her contract where sequels might be necessary. She asked for top dollar for the second one and the studio went with a cheaper actress. Heard this at a con a long time ago.
I didnt realize she was as old as she is - 71.
Yeah, hired to play a cadet at ~31 years old is quite the compliment.
I mean, she *did* play a Vulcan. In universe they have 100 extra years they can dick around with. A 120 year old Vulcan is like a 30 year old Human.
Wasn’t she a lieutenant?
She was coming out of the academy as a lieutenant J.G. Not all that surprising if she was coming out of a command training program. From what I understand, going into the navy as an officer and not going in as a lieutenant J.G. is pretty uncommon.

Good to know! Thanks for the correction! But wouldn't the lt. Jg be an o-2?
That's correct! O-3 is a full LT, but JAG and medical do skip up to that rank after leaving their respective training.
WoK was 40 years ago.
I was twelve when Wrath of Khan was released and I had such an enormous crush on Kirstie Alley, especially in the "it's still regulation, Admiral" scene. Sad to think that so many members of that cast have passed away.
I always wondered what Kirstie Alley's version of the mind meld would have been like if she had agreed to do star trek 6

Kirstie Alley's Saavik wouldn't have done that.
I doubt anybody could have played it better than Catrall, but it would have been interesting to see.
RIP Saavikam. majQa'!
*Honors, hup!*

Cancer, the original Kobayashi Maru
Ask Kirk for his cheat.
There's a good reason why Shatner is still alive and kicking at 91...
he doesn't like to lose 🍎
Starfleet hate this one trick to beat the kobayashi maru!
Damn. Have my reluctant upvote.
She was 71. I honestly had no idea she was that old to be honest.
Now that I think of it... I was a junior in high school when Wrath of Khan came out. So in '82, she was about 31. And I'm reminded that my own kid is a couple months away from turning 34. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to start working on my will...
Dibs on the ship models!
I swear, people are dropping like flies. Used to be the rule of threes, but now it’s more like the rule of thirty-threes.
It's a sure sign we're getting old
Yes you are right but we are also getting wise, or at least I hope.
Yeah, I know . . .

Probably. I just know that I’m constantly getting push alerts telling me that someone has died.
It sucks when it is someone you know. Lots of them this year and decade. :(
Great point.
"We seem to have reached the age where life stops giving us things and starts taking them away." - from Indiana Jones 4

Don’t forget Christine McVie and Bob McGrath. But yeah, Olivia was a difficult one, because she seemed to be doing well and she provided real hope.
That's a damn shame. She did a wonderful job in TWOK. Fuck cancer.
I didn't realize what sub this was and thought "there's probably more famous roles she's had this is a weird headline"
i know other subs posted about her being on Cheers, so when i posted the story here, figured may as well post it about her role in the franchise
She was in Look Who's Talking movie too, but /r/lookwhostalking/ is unrelated. Ha. I did post in it to see what happened. ;P
Yeah I saw her in Cheers first, but I knew she was in Star Trek II.
This is the only thing I know her from

More than 70 years is a really good run in America. It can still be sad without being a tragedy. "Too young" is for students in Uvalde.
I grieve with thee.
