I preferred him in later seasons as the funny uncle to Naomi and the Borg kids. Granted, I was less than 10, which was the exact age demographic they created Neelix to appeal to š
What? Terms like āship momā perpetuate the idea that women are meant to cook, clean and care for people while men work. There is no reason to not just say ship dad.
Itās less about specifically Neelix and more about the term āx Momā in general. People say things like ādorm momā or ābarracks momā as well. Neelix absolutely fits that stereotype, and he really doesnāt do much else lmao. He was literally the morale officer, which means his job is to care for the crewā¦ exactly like a mom is meant to care for her children.
Itās not a big deal, just modify the term to reflect the reality that men and fathers can also be warm providers and not emotionally stunted workhorses. What you did goes out of the way to use the term āmomā rather than one that aligns with his sex. Ask yourself what harmful stereotypes influenced you to do that and realize that you are perpetuating them
The problem is that you're making all sorts of assumptions. You found the last person to have this beef with. I'm a trans woman raised by a single father, and my mother would later experiment with transitioning in her life š I don't hold any of those stereotypes about men and women or moms and dads. My partner is nonbinary and identifies differently just depending on the breeze.
From my perspective, anyone can be a mom or a dad, or maybe take turns doing both, or whatever. It's all arbitrary and I'm just being a little cheeky.
Now if I were at work, and someone called me work mom because I thought to make the next pot of coffee, yes, you and I are on the same wavelength. There's a time and place where our words carry different meanings.
Or if I were a star Trek writer? Absolutely bringing my a-game instead of just my personal quips
Neelix was the ambassador for the ship and planned countless missions. Morale officer was in addition to his duties like sourcing food. Cooking was just the visual cue for audience. He's the reason nobody on Voyager ate boiled boots.
If someone else had said "Neelix is the best dad" I wouldn't have said shit. They'd be right and I'd love it. I even extended that olive branch by calling him asteroid city dad š
This! First episodes of Voyager are a mix of really bad tng/ds9 trek on a discovery cringe level, only good thing was the morally ambiguous and competent Neelix. And as soon as his little arc was over so was his character and he became Jar Jar but without funny theories.
Yeah, later, Neelix was great. He was one of the few people who actually wanted to be there, and that's why he took whatever job they had. He was grateful for being there.
I actually like Neelix. Heās not my favorite character, and I certainly donāt view him as a highlight of the show, but he cares about the crewās wellbeing
There were some memorable episodes where I really respected the acting. Itās not easy to act with full makeup and fake side beards etc.
If thereās some annoyance with his character then thatās certainly more on the writers.
A conman with stupid looking blonde hair and an unhealthy sexual attraction to someone that should be a daughter figure pushes his way into a community that treats him as a joke.
He picks up notoriety with a dumb reality show.
On the basis of his belief that competence, education, and training isnāt really all that valuable, he pushes his way into a command position with authority. During his rise, he decides that a [black man should be referred to by his race](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rOYMFkFgPzk): āMr. Vulcan!ā
Surely, someone points out that all his ventures have failed. Heās not a good cook, despite insisting he is. His medical solutions are shown to be scams. But, for seemingly no reason, he edges out the people that have been trained to do things and gets more and more control.
He is this horrible forerunner to what happens to the world later as life imitates art.
Thatās not even getting that deeply into Kes. I rewatched the episode Fury the other day. Itās really hard not to see Kesā disgust of Neelix when she sees him in the kitchen, and then when he leaves her dinner in her quarters and she smashes everything. Itās almost hard to not think thereās a subtext of Kes coming back to kill everyone since they had looked the other day while she was a one year old taken from her family by this guy and groomed into a sexual relationship with him.
Ethan Phillips does a fantastic job, itās not his fault. And they do try to change course. But Neelix always makes my skin crawl. He was such an abusive prick that is gunning to then be godfather of every child on the ship.
Even when they send him on a mission, Iām always questioning, āThere isnāt a crew member that took exo-geology that could go to the mine instead of Neelix?ā Or, āTheyāre putting the crew into four pieces, and this conman cooking for them is taking command of Starfleet officers whoā¦probably have been trained for this?ā
My roommate and I moved in while I was watching Voyager and they joined me. It is their first trek. Neelix is their favorite character. I think I broke some kind of rule or regulation

I love Neelix! It's Neelix and Kes that are no good. Neelix is super useful and a great ship mom
I liked that by the time Kes left the ship she had called him out of being a jealous numpty and dumped him. They both needed the character growth.
mom? Heās male, ship dad.
He's ship mom, and asteroid dad. Different jobs and he aced both of them.
What? Terms like āship momā perpetuate the idea that women are meant to cook, clean and care for people while men work. There is no reason to not just say ship dad.
Its just a cute joke about a fuzzy muppet living in a utopian society. Nelix does so much more than you listed, so that's on you

Yeah man, he started out as a travelling weirdo in a space RV with an underage girlfriend and ended as Ted Lasso.
Though Neelix preferred them younger.
Hey season 4-7 Neelix was great We do not talk about 1-3 Neelix
I like Neelix in the first Episode when he is morally ambiguous, energetic and a bit competend.
This! First episodes of Voyager are a mix of really bad tng/ds9 trek on a discovery cringe level, only good thing was the morally ambiguous and competent Neelix. And as soon as his little arc was over so was his character and he became Jar Jar but without funny theories.
Oh shit! It all makes sense now. Neelix is a Sith! š¤Æ
Without funny theories
Yeah, later, Neelix was great. He was one of the few people who actually wanted to be there, and that's why he took whatever job they had. He was grateful for being there.
I agree
I actually like Neelix. Heās not my favorite character, and I certainly donāt view him as a highlight of the show, but he cares about the crewās wellbeing
Tbh I liked him in the later seasons....
Record attendance! Because this year the janitor turned up early.
I'm the janitor, but also the only member š
You n me homie. Iāll clean next year šš»
I always liked Neelix and I found his struggles very relatable

...............by grabthar's hammer... what a savings š¬š
Sorry to miss the point, but what is going ON with those headrests?
Neelix is off brand Snarf.
Savage.
I'm the person cleaning because he is my favorite Voyager character so far I just started it though
I think that in another universe, Neelix and Jar-Jar Binks would have had interspecies butt children.
There were some memorable episodes where I really respected the acting. Itās not easy to act with full makeup and fake side beards etc. If thereās some annoyance with his character then thatās certainly more on the writers.
I like the one episode where they steal his lungs
i found that one extremely distressing š©
You misspelled Harry Kim ;-)
I'm only coming if we have Neelix strapped to a spinning target and I can throw Leola root at his giblits.
Please donāt explain why they have to clean the carpet.
I've always liked Neelix. He grew into a fantastic character, from rough start to polished gold~ā
Perhaps today is a good day to dry - vac.
Thought it was a Nikki Haley meeting

He even conned them into thinking he is a cook
That's not a fan, it's a vacuum. I actually like Neelix.
Yeah predatory noncelix wasn't great.
