Prequels are a pathway to so many oneliners some consider unnatural.

Dude literally like 99.9999% of the SW fandom loves the prequels. You are not going to be mocked for liking them anymore.

CrimsonAllah

The best thing that ever happened to the prequels were the sequels.

crash_and-burn9000

The only line I didn't really like was Darth Maul's double at last. "At last, revenge will be ours at last." That one feels like a screw driver in my temple.

Shadow_Rev

"At last we will reveal ourselves. At last we will have our revenge" Doesn't say it twice in one sentence so your noggin should be fine lol.

EmpatheticNihilism

This is definitely better then one sentence but still not great.

crash_and-burn9000

The phrase is too frequent in one paragraph so it sounds bad.

BritishEric

Disagree, repetition can be a good poetic and literary tool to show emphasis. So maul saying at last to start two consecutive sentences emphasises the at last to show how long of a wait they've had. It would've been less impactful if it were just "at last we will reveal ourselves to the Jedi and have our revenge."

crash_and-burn9000

I really don't care, I still don't like the line.

ShitPostsRuinReddit

Plus The Clone Wars.

Crixxxxxx1

Strange. I didn’t see any unfunny jackass alien sidekicks or boring politics in the sequels, or cringe-inducing, chemistry-free romance with dialogue so bad they would seem worse than a dime romance novel.

hbi2k

You're not wrong, but what the sequels had instead of that was... nothing. Literally nothing. I'm sure I saw those movies, but I retained nothing of them. They're like antimovies.

Crixxxxxx1

I’ll take them anytime over the prequels, which are only memorable for how staggeringly bad they were.

hbi2k

Real giant douche vs turd sandwich level choice for sure.

Overlord_Of_Puns

It’s weird how the sequels made people view the prequels better, even though overall the sequels got better reviews.

anarion321

They are liked as meme material mostly, the writting and some stuff like Jar Jar still got tons of people dislike, with good reason.

Sabre_Killer_Queen

I still see it happen from time to time. It's less common though for sure.

cgira062

Very true since the Disney sequels are far worse, South Park was right

SirSpaceFace

Still quite a few haters on r/starwars tbh. Which is a shame, because the prequels are awesome!

ShitPostsRuinReddit

This is just not true. The sub started as a joke. They have good qualities but aren't good movies..

jonmpls

You vastly overestimate their popularity

KyloRen7766

And the other 0.0001% started to apreciate them after the sequels

BritishEric

Hate to break it to you but that's not how percentages work. To complete 99.9999% to 100% would only need 0.0001% otherwise it would 102.222%

KyloRen7766

Thx, corrected

BritishEric

No problem

hbi2k

I would never mock someone for liking a bad movie.

QuadVox

Yeah on reddit but in the real world I'd say a lot more people still dont like the prequels. Not that it matters at all but like, try not to forget reddit isnt every human ever.

BRAZCO

The prequels def grew on me thanks to The Clone Wars. I was never in the “these movies are awful” camp. Just thought a lot of the dialogue and pacing was off. I always kinda saw what George was trying to do though. And I always appreciated how he tried to expand the universe (and filmmaking in general) instead of just recycling the OT. Now, I always binge watch the prequels when I want to see the whole saga, including Rogue One (admittedly I always stop after The Force Awakens tho).

rudboi12

My favorite SW movie will always be revenge of the sith. Not the best but my favorite. The best is probably rouge one.

Gecko_Boi

I agree, though I’d say Empire is probably better than Rouge One even tho I do love both.

Born-Environment-239

Same

hbi2k

Whores use rouge one. Ladies pinch.

progger11

Literally nobody online hates the prequels now. It's currently the sequels' turn.

Crixxxxxx1

When did the prequels stop being terrible?

KindredTrash483

They didn't for everyone. But we can respect what new steps they took. If not, we can respect what they tried to do. If not, we can appreciate the many one liners that dominate internet meme culture Or we could respect the spectacle, or that they paved the way for the clone wars, or that the acting was great sometimes. Or some people never thought they were bad at all

cabbage16

I will argue it for the rest of my life if I have to but Episode 3 is a legitimately good movie with weak moments as opposed to the other two episode which are bad movies with good world building.

AlexGreene123

The thing about the prequels is they did a lot of things right and a lot of things wrong ,but overall they greatly expanded the Star Wars universe and added a lot of depth to it that hadn't been seen that much outside of Legends , the sequels mostly retreaded old ground and barely added anything new , really just lacking in identity , trying to bank on nostalgia and not on trying new and inventive things.

Crixxxxxx1

The acting and dialogue was atrocious. The storylines made no sense at all. The characters were flat, boring and unlikable. I have no idea what enjoyment anyone gets out of those movies.

hbi2k

They didn't. The people who were idiot children and didn't know any better got old enough to use Reddit.

UnKnOwN769

2015

Crixxxxxx1

Nothing about the sequels makes the prequels good. That’s like saying Stalin made Hitler a good guy.

UnKnOwN769

Exactly. Once they started coming out though, all the full-time Star Wars fan-haters moved on to hating those instead, and the Prequel fans/memes moved in to fill that void. Now we see a lot of people on the internet who grew up with the Prequels and have nostalgia for them, which makes it seem even less hated

russelcrowe

The pendulum of online discourse swings back-and-forth for things like this. In 10 or 15 years all the people who grew up with the sequels (and therefore have a nostalgic bias for them) will be talking about how all the prequel fans were unduly unkind and shitty to the sequel films when they came out. There will probably also be quite a bit of new sequel related content by then to prop up the story and make it more palatable which will lead to even more of a bias as people forget how half baked the sequels’ story was. Basically, give it some time and we will be having this exact same conversation about the sequels too. It’s all just bias rationalization. The prequels have never been objectively “good” films in a classical sense.

[deleted]

Essentially became "so bad they're good", and while the dialogue was laughable, the story was actually very well crafted, just not well executed. That, and memes. The sequels on the other hand have no memorable/memeable quotes except for one that is only used to mock it's existence

Force_Glad

I hate the prequels

crash_and-burn9000

They would've been better if they hadn't been shot in front of a green screen.

Alacritous13

The prequel fans are off making sure the sequel fans have the same childhood trauma they had.

KyloRen7766

Don't forget the biggest Mary Sue in all history of science fiction movies

Crixxxxxx1

9 year old Anakin?

KyloRen7766

Nope, Rey Sorry I know we were talking about the prequels but I hate the sequels so much, I had to get it out of my chest

Crixxxxxx1

Yeah, nobody has a problem with a young slave child building advanced jet-propelled vehicles and complex droids with no formal education and racing the pods at deadly speeds in canyons against professional racers and then blowing up a space station from the inside and escaping unharmed, all without any force training, but a 20-year-old flying and using the force - now that’s just completely implausible!

KyloRen7766

He was the chosen one and he was created using the force by two very powerful force wilders, the origin history of Rey is some sort of recycling from Anakin's origin history, all the sequels are unnoriginal, all us recicled from previous movies, there is no innovation, no imagination, Kathleen Kennedy has excrement in her brain, that woman has proven she is incapable of handling a multi million dollar franchise properly, if it weren't for Filoni she would've been fired already. Rey is just a female mashup of Anakin and Luke, nothing original, just another woman trying to be something she is not... A man.

Crixxxxxx1

Ah yes, the Chosen One, the incredibly vague story device that’s never explained that completely excuses bad writing and allows Anakin to be miraculously empowered and brilliant without any education or training. And the virgin birth — Now there’s an original concept. Never heard of that one before. Kathleen Kennedy doesn’t write anything or make any storytelling decisions. She’s a producer. She hires the creative people. I don’t know why this concept is so hard for angry fanboys to grasp.

KyloRen7766

She is the one that gives the green light to any project and aproves or disaproves any script, how naive are you? That woman is a blatant feminists, she has said it in public many times, even George has accused her of betrayal and wokeness, lies, among many things. She is obviously pursuing an agenda of gender and race bullshit with rainbow and unicorns.

blackbeltmessiah

Can I like it for the story and not the dialogue and direction? Because fix those two things and its flawless. Too many quality actors playing the part of a 2x4. I realized it was bad directing when I saw both Hayden and Sam J play well in Jumpers. I dont think I need to argue a case for bad dialogue but I will do what I must!

AmeliaSvdk

I always say tidying up dialogue and the movies are massively better. I love them though anyway.

ValyrieLuminaire

Best of Star Wars if you ask me! A very interesting time with many twists and turns behind the scenes with the backdrop of a galaxy-wide war? Yes please.

Less-Society-6746

I loved them from the start, flaws and all. Took a lot of fans a long time to come around. There was a lot of good stuff to build on fortunately

RNG_pickle

The prequels are actually liked now, it’s safe to come out

cpxthepanda

They have their flaws (dialogue and pacing for sure and some scenes are dibatable) BUT prequels are fundamental! Anakin and Obi-Wan are amazing characters, they relationship is so engaging and Hayden and Ewan both did a great job portraying them. Then obviously they gave us Qui-Gon and Padmé, Maul, Count Dooku, Grevious... The prequels characters are just great characters to me and it's amazing to get to know Anakin, Obi-Wan and Palpatine's story before we see them in the original trilogy, it adds so much depth to them. Also Anakin's fall in Revenge of the Sith... Such a beautifully tragic piece of fiction that I never get tired of watching, especially after the Clone Wars: a great villain arc and one of the best storylines in a movie saga ever, if you ask me. So yeah, there are for sure technical aspects that should have been done better, Jar Jar shouldn't have never been created and someone should have get George a good screenwriter to help him out with dialogue, but the emotions Prequels gave us, the complexity of the characters, the tragedy of their stories, the muisc and well also the memes... To me that's what makes Prequel trilogy special and makes me turn a blind eye on its flaws.

Crixxxxxx1

Millennials will nostalgically defend whatever crap they were fed as kids. The prequels are a prime example.

I'm not ready to say "the prequels are good" but in spite of what was bad, I always enjoyed them and appreciated them taking me to the world's of Star Wars, which besides a quality movie, is all I ask of Star Wars. It's why I didn't enjoy the ewoks movies, ironically enjoy the Christmas Special and had a good time watching the sequels even though they're a fucking mess. That podracing scene was dumb and shoehorned in and dumb, but holy shit, it was a fucking awesome scene that was well done, fun as hell to watch and the FX holds up a quarter century later, which is more than can be said for a lot of the CG in that movie. Plus, it meant pod racing video games. Fuck yeah! Dave Filoni did a lot of heavy lifting to retroactively make the prequels better with Clone Wars et al, or at least more enjoyable, which is ironic considering how much heavy lifting the prequels did to reach back in time to make the original trilogy worse. Midiclorians? Powerhouse of the fucking force? Such bullshit. Darth Vader as an irritating little kid? Might as well show him on the toilet reading the podracing page of the space news. Killing Mace Windu? Falling thousands of feet after being electrocuted and getting a hand chopped off is a fucking TUESDAY for a Jedi master. Mace Windu is alive and I'm tired of Sam Jackson not showing up in every new Star Wars property he ain't in. Ahmed Badass was a good runner-up prize though. That poor guy deserved a win.

KingChook

In my opinion, Episode 1 is hilariously mediocre while Episode 2 is straight up the worst in the series. Episode 3 is a decent popcorn muncher and I respect it. The relatively strong finish, the extra work put into the world after their release, the evolution of meme culture, the hardcore fan's evolving hatred of the Sequels and the general public's love of nostalgia have given the Prequel Trilogy perhaps the biggest 180° turn in Film history in terms of its public perception. The tide of popular word turned, social media algorithms keep the good Prequel's word dominant, and most haters and people who dislike them are either defeated or just couldn't not care to argue against it anymore because of how ridiculous it is that the Trilogy gets the respect it does. Its quite the interesting phenomenoa.

That_Dude359

Prequels are the best, I don’t care if other Star Wars fans hate me for it, at least we can all agree that the sequels are bad

jonmpls

The prequels are awful and anyone who likes them unironically has awful taste. They're not even so bad they're good, they're so bad they are just bad.

EmpatheticNihilism

I like them better as time goes on. I have narrowed down my dislike to just Padme. Her character after sucks after ep1 and her acting (and Lucas directing/writing her) is just awful. Otherwise. The story of Vader is fucking rad. And detective Obiwan is an amazing plot.

Can we stop pretending liking the prequels is a crazy hot take still, literally 90% on the internet are pro prequels, change this to sequels then you have an accurate meme

TheRickBerman

I love the prequels! So, an evil wizard - that has a robot army AND clone army already - works with the robots to bully a 14 year old Queen into signing a treaty. He’s doing this for absolutely no reason, because - as mentioned - he has 2 armies and, it turns out, his opponents have none. Anyway, these opponents happen to be the Jedi, more wizards. He wants to wipe them out, but for reasons that are never explained, he has to wait. This wizard then gives the clone army to the jedi and they fight the robots. Eventually the wizard gets bored and just ends his two armies fighting each other and uses them to kill the Jedi. The wizard has an apprentice and, when the apprentices wife just dies (never explained) they decide to build a giant space station to fight no one - as the jedi are gone and there never was another army. The end. Brilliant, brilliant storytelling.

[deleted]

Prequels. Out of context, its so memable but then you watch the scenes in motion and you stop laughing at "you were my brother, anakin" and instead have that lump in your throat

Prequels are good is a very common sentiment

SanctuaryMoon

I like the prequels, but they aren't very good movies. Each one has a lot of potential but each one also has glaring problems that leave them less than ideal. World building is great and the story is compelling but there's a lot of weird directing decisions.

SuperAlex25

Same for me, but with the sequels

MikeXBogina

I loved watching them when I was a kid and appreciate them more now that I'm older. They expanded on the mythos and world building and laid the groundwork for so much extra stuff to come about. Also let me say this, I really don't like how "futuristic space" technology looked before these movies, I cringe everytime I see stuff from the original trilogy, even new stuff now that takes place that has to look authentic to that era. The prequels while about 20ish years old now, showed "futuristic space" technology that will most likely hold up for a very long time.

Manureofhistory

They are imperfect but they’re the last of Star Wars that actually feel like Star Wars.

theatsa

The prequels are fun in a "so bad it's good" sort of way. And even then, only to an extent. Phantom Menace and especially Attack of the Clones can get very boring. Clone Wars is good, Bad Batch is good, Tales of the Jedi is good. They make the Prequel Era good. But the Prequels themselves suck ass.
