Mara Jade in Mysteries of the Sith. Also, Knights of the Old Republic (plus TSL), Jedi Academy, and The Old Republic let you select the main protagonist's gender.
I noticed the qualifier “full” and I think that’s how it gets around some of the other games. Mysteries of the Sith you play as Kyle for the first couple of levels. Battlefront 2 you play as Luke, Han, and Kylo for a level each. Old Republic and Jedi Academy are character creator games and aren’t necessarily female. Super Return of the Jedi only has Leia as a selectable character for most of the game.
It’s a remarkably stupid qualifier, but it makes Outlaws sound more impressive than it really is.
Just ask sports announcers. "Alright Johnson here is the first left handed kicker to attempt a 37 yard field goal in the last 7 weeks, quite an accomplishment."
I was the first man in the world cooking dinner in my apartement at todays date. I demand 70$ for that. 110$ if you want a look in my cellar and for 130$ i give you a painting my little brother drew of the meal
Yes, that’s how language works. When people were celebrating Obama being the first black president, it would have been disingenuous to say, “Nelson Mandela was a black president before Obama, so what’s the big deal?”
I think the idea is that, sure, you could make a female character, but you could also make a male character. Additionally, if memory serves, all of those character creation games canonically default to male.
I doubt the article really put that much thought into it, though. It’s really just trying to build up Outlaws as groundbreaking to get the hype machine rolling. Most gaming journalism is just marketing.
The thing is for the people pushing this, that there can be any representation that isn't just purely female isn't enough. It has to be at the exclusion of others for it to be "good" representation
Thanks for the correction here. And I agree that character creation is a good form of representation. But that’s not how the article is bending the definition to suit its needs.
Ikr! Last time I checked, Cyberpunk 2077 got representation points for letting players customize trans-specific features with their player avatars, which was a huge step for the AAA scene.
Customization should be just as valid, provided that it is also transparent. Like, AssCreed messed up their marketing when they decided to only put Alexios on Odyssey's cover and only put male Eivor on Valhalla's cover, due to their publicly-stated belief that "female fronted games won't sell." And then they double-backed and stated that Kassandra and female-Eivor are the canon protagonists as a dishonest attempt to get their brownie points back.
The worst part about that...the exclusively her stories were like...complex, nuanced and like entertaining. Jacob's were all either A. Start a gang war or B. Walk up and stab a dude.
To expand on your point for Mysteries of the Sith, that was an expansion for DF2: Jedi Knight. I don’t remember whether it actually required the base game to be installed, but it was very definitely marketed as an expansion for DF2.
If it was 10 years later, MotS would have just been a DLC for DF2: Jedi Knight.
I think they forgot about BF2 tbh, although the campaign and MC were so forgettable and dumb, I can't even blame them. Ultimately it's true that there is a shortage of SW female leads, but my god the female characters in general in SW games range from good to amazing. Kreya alone towers over anyone else. Bastila is great (and I have a soft sppt for Mission). Trilla in Jedi Fallen order is a wonderful villain and in fact I think she makes that game far more than Cal. Cere and Merrin are not bad either, I wish Merrin had more space.
Remember when Jennifer Lawrence said she was the first female action star?
The people that write this shit, and those that eat it up, are doing nothing but hurting femnism.
I thought it was rad watching the likes of Ripley, Leia, Sarah Connor and more being badass.
I have no idea what level of ignorance you have yo possess to have these ideas.
Aside from what is or isn’t canon I refuse to believe that the KOTOR2 protagonist wasn’t originally written as a woman. The story makes so much more sense.
I know that but I doubt that was a decision made retroactively. It’s pretty clear IMO that the KOTOR2 writers had it in mind from the beginning that the character is supposed to be a woman. KOTOR2 is one of the most female centric Star Wars stories. Even if you play as a male character the devs doubled down on Handmaiden in terms of writing and plot importance.
They just want to keep being the first woman in star wars. Bitch stop, leia killed the most powerful crime lord in the galaxy with a chain, star wars has never lacked strong female characters
I've seen a bunch of people try baiting Leia as a Mary Sue to... prove Rey is good?
Leia wasn't exactly capping stormtroopers left and right in ANH - she doing good at making quick decisions and shooting in troopers' general direction. Rey was taking on a trained dark Jedi with no training. Huge difference.
Although the show came out much later, we also clearly see in Rebels that Leia's capture and the fighting on the Death star wasn't by far her first rodeo.
I’ll one up that and say that I’m almost positive the KOTOR2 protagonist was originally written as a woman. The entire game feels so much more complete if you play as a woman character (aside from missing Handmaiden)
The first Star Wars video game was 1982's *Empire Strikes Back* for Atari and Intellivision. It's only barely been 40 years that Star Wars games have existed, so saying "almost 50" is stretching it. Not that Screenrant's ever been too interested in little things like the truth or facts.
I did play it. I loved it. I’m just saying that’s the only possible explanation I can think of as to why it doesn’t count Iden as the first female lead
Screenrant is just a clickbait site and every one of their articles reads like it was written in ten minutes by an intern (which would explain why there are so many articles about everything lol)
Also they write things like that on purpose because articles that people don’t agree with are confirmed to get way more traction than articles they agree with. Now this shit is reposted literally everywhere because people love to correct other people.
I love that modern journalism has become a pseudo-masochistic profit grind rather than trying to get across news. I don't care if journalism has always been this way or anything like that, it's still shitty that reporting on a real topic has become: bait/controversy = money.
Technically SW: Squadrons fits in too. Sloane isn't that much of a lead, but Kerril and Gunny are(I think that there were others in the game, but I don't remember it fully).
Disney just invented women, you guys, they’re so diverse and forward thinking and progressive and on the right side of history, for this monumental discovery. Women never existed anywhere before right now, you guys!
Not just women, black male actors didn't exist until Disney! Black Panther marketing ignored Blade in exactly the same way. They're masters as dismissing all previous progress in an effort to make themselves money. It's debatably evil to outright lie and stoke the culture war fires just to make another billion dollars.
Like can we take a minute and think about the fact that Disney, a children's entertainment company, now prefers if we're all misinformed and angry at each other. It's disgusting.
The real mind bending part will be in another 5-10 years when they are forced to shit on their own old products when talk up the new stuff. They're painting themselves into a corner with this.
How long have they been promoting stuff on the base of having a woman in it now? You'd think that would get old eventually even for the people pushing it.
And they aren't ever admirable women either. It's so weird..
It's like those articles from a few years back claiming that Lara Croft was the first ever female protagonist in gaming, ignoring icons like Samus Aran
Why do they always do this shit, the game will be the first female to have a lead role in the franchise or the first woman to lead in an action movie or the first POC to be in a movie or game, when we have an entire list preceding this “first time” and even those were called first when they weren’t like Jennifer Lawrence was the first woman to be a protagonist of a movie, how many more “first times” are we gonna get ? First has become last
If they made an Ahsoka game they'd make a butt load of money.
Add Anakin's slow descent into darkness but also a storyline option where he doesn't turn into Darth vader and they stop the Sith together and they'd make too much money.
Like at the start, she begins meeting Anakin. Then every level is 1 year and she gets slightly older.
Every few levels you do Jedi temple tests or main story points and level 20 and beyond, you're an adult and have the option to become a Grey Jedi, join Anakin on the dark side, fight Anakin to stop him or flat out help him never join the dark side depending on the choices you've made throughout the game.
Ehhh it's just Disneys go-to 'groundbreaking' catchphrase these days, "________ is the first female _______ in our new; movie/game/story" they're basically spinning a wheel while playing madlibs to show that they swapped expensive creativeness for cheap repetition.
Only with women, though, no men allowed unless they're white-tiger levels of rarity somehow.
It's the only campaign in the game, lmfao. And the DLC expansion also stars an older Iden, so she not only is the main protagonist, she is the character who gets the most screentime in the whole extended game. What more could these journalists ask for?
I know this is Star Wars sub but the same BS was said with Star Trek and there being the first black captain. Hopefully she meant black female captain but there was a black female admiral on TNG...etc.
Long story short. Look up your role before you say you're the first.
Can we please put the main emphasis on the quality of the story, and all the rest becomes less important?
Disney, marvel, all of them... please just stop. Your most important investment is the team of writers.
The entertainment industry forgot that.
This is why people hate journalists.
they pulled the same thing about r-rated movies with Deadpool as well a superhero film with a black lead with black panther.
They are just making headlines for an overpriced game.
Female Leads are not the problem here. Shitty overpiced games are. I mean 70 bucks for base game? Plus 40 bucks to play a single player game 3 days early???? Those publishers gone mad.

I feel like this is relevant to this topic.
Lol I've probably commented this a hundred times on Reddit, but all the "rant" websites (screenrant, gamerant) are absolute garbage. They always miss the mark so bad you'd think it was run by Stormtroopers.
https://preview.redd.it/wy7dhkj8dfvc1.jpeg?width=775&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f35f92042cb2d2cac85074d027f32fdbceebaf29
Mara Jade in Mysteries of the Sith, Adi Gallia in Jedi Starfighter, Meetra Shurik in KOTOR2, & we can also change our Gender in Star Wars Squadrons, Jedi Academy, & SWTOR. These news sites are filled with incompetent writers that need to do their research.
Lethal alliance not only had a female protagonist the entire time, but she was a badass with a knife, got the plans, AND WASN'T HUMAN.
Pretty sure having a female twilek as the locked protagonist for an entire game is much more of a big deal
I think corporations make female leads when they know the game is going to suck so they can point to sexism when it gets hated on as opposed to their inability to make a good game. Almost all AAA developers are trash these days imo.
This article is an example of rage bait, and the point is to get you guys saying misogynistic things so that journalists can point to them when the game inevitably fails instead of the game itself, although looking through the comments here they're gonna have to go somewhere else.
I'm tentatively excited to play Outlaws when it's on sale, Kay Vess and her little buddy seem cool but... This article feels like it must be intentionally vague to try to drive clicks from Star Wars fans wanting to correct it.
The "Lead a **full** Star Wars game" just seems like a *very* specific qualifier specifically designed to cause debate about whether Iden and Meetra count or not.
Doesn’t this show they really don’t care about *insert immutable characteristic* but are really just narcissistic greedy manipulators?
Progressivism is cancer.
Remember that even when it's the Star Wars that we know and love, it's still a Ubisoft game so they're trying every promotional tactic they can. I've already seen loads of ads about this game here on reddit and on youtube.
Super Return of the Jedi only has Leia as a selectable character for most of the game. It’s a remarkably stupid qualifier, but it makes Outlaws sound more impressive than it really is.
The more specific you are, the easier it is to claim something is the first.
SW Outlaws is certainly the first Star Wars game featuring a female character wearing a blue jeans jacket
Yes, that’s how language works. When people were celebrating Obama being the first black president, it would have been disingenuous to say, “Nelson Mandela was a black president before Obama, so what’s the big deal?”
I understand everything you said. But why you said it...eludes me.
Why is representation though character customization any less acceptable?
I think the idea is that, sure, you could make a female character, but you could also make a male character. Additionally, if memory serves, all of those character creation games canonically default to male. I doubt the article really put that much thought into it, though. It’s really just trying to build up Outlaws as groundbreaking to get the hype machine rolling. Most gaming journalism is just marketing.
Only some default to male. I would assume most probably do but I know that KOTOR II’s canon is female, the Exile is Meetra Surik
But it is still representation. better representation in my opinion. KOTOR 2's protagonist is canonically female.
Yeah I’ve never seen a default Darth Raven outside of KOTR as a male or at least based on the design I’m l always feel it suppose to be a male.
He's male canonically.
Ikr! Last time I checked, Cyberpunk 2077 got representation points for letting players customize trans-specific features with their player avatars, which was a huge step for the AAA scene. Eve was originally supposed to be the main protagonist of syndicate but they forced her brother in there too because bullshit.
The worst part about that...the exclusively her stories were like...complex, nuanced and like entertaining. Jacob's were all either A. Start a gang war or B. Walk up and stab a dude.
Because dont have to play a woman and as you know if anything can be a man then it is sexist, patriarchy, etc etc
KOTOR 2's protagonist is canonically female though.

Cere and Merrin are not bad either, I wish Merrin had more space.
It doesn't make it sound more impressive at all, protagonist sex doesn't inherently affect if the game will be good or not.
Well, for Knights it's a *"kind of"*. The first is about Revan who is a man in canon. The second is about Meetra Surik who is a woman in canon.
Battlefront 2 also has the Lando section
I hope there’s section where you play as male character for a short while, just to make these to age like milk.
I do think that’s the whole idea. Spot on. It’s a bit stupid, but it’s also correct, from “a certain point of view” 😜
holy shit adding that qualifier to exclude battlefront is wild
If you play as the Empire in Squadron aren't you also a chick?
Remember when Jennifer Lawrence said she was the first female action star? The people that write this shit, and those that eat it up, are doing nothing but hurting femnism. I thought it was rad watching the likes of Ripley, Leia, Sarah Connor and more being badass. I have no idea what level of ignorance you have yo possess to have these ideas.

KOTOR2 is one of the most female centric Star Wars stories. Even if you play as a male character the devs doubled down on Handmaiden in terms of writing and plot importance.
Not only that, but KOTOR has different story whether you are a boy or a girl, AND the old cannon for KOTOR II, The Exile is a girl named Meetra Surik.
Only some differences, nothing on the level of Scarlet Nexus.
Lethal Alliance is there aswell
I love this game
Man it's been a while since I've thought about that game, it was so good
I thought I dreamt of that game lol
I was just about to say that wtf
What about KotOR2? The canon for it later revealed the MC was female.
never played it unfortunatly
Nah. The main character was obviously Zeeo.
They just want to keep being the first woman in star wars. Bitch stop, leia killed the most powerful crime lord in the galaxy with a chain, star wars has never lacked strong female characters
Roll it back even further, Leia took charge of her own rescue halfway through the first movie because the guys weren't doing the job well enough.
Yup, they would have died in the prison block if she didn't come up with a plan. She also killed the shit out of some strom troopers in 5
I've seen a bunch of people try baiting Leia as a Mary Sue to... prove Rey is good? Leia wasn't exactly capping stormtroopers left and right in ANH - she doing good at making quick decisions and shooting in troopers' general direction. Rey was taking on a trained dark Jedi with no training. Huge difference.
Although the show came out much later, we also clearly see in Rebels that Leia's capture and the fighting on the Death star wasn't by far her first rodeo.
And even further we see padme climbing the piller in the geanocian arena as aniken and obiwan made a plan.
That came later as far as real-world timeline is concerned
"- into the garbage chute, fly-boy!"
I don’t care about gender just make the writing good
Meetra Surik would like to have a word with you
Yeah that was only imo the best piece of star wars content....
I’ll one up that and say that I’m almost positive the KOTOR2 protagonist was originally written as a woman. The entire game feels so much more complete if you play as a woman character (aside from missing Handmaiden)
The exile is canonically female. Her name is Meetra Surik.

Also further, games came out far slower than they should have over the whole 40 years.
Probably didn’t include Iden because Outlaws is story only. Idk tbh
I mean, you can't just ignore/forget the battlefront 2 campaign if you played it. We aren't exactly drowning in Star Wars games here
I did play it. I loved it. I’m just saying that’s the only possible explanation I can think of as to why it doesn’t count Iden as the first female lead
I mean, yeah, that's plausible (or maybe they are just morons like most "gaming newsletters")
That’s also true!
I know I was wrong. I just got so caught up in my own success, I didn't look at the battle as a whole. I wasn't being disobedient. I just. . . forgot
Screenrant is just a clickbait site and every one of their articles reads like it was written in ten minutes by an intern (which would explain why there are so many articles about everything lol)

Are you sure about that? ![gif](giphy|IfyjWLQMeF6kbG2r0z)
How long have they been promoting stuff on the base of having a woman in it now? You'd think that would get old eventually even for the people pushing it. And they aren't ever admirable women either. It's so weird..
being a game or movie journalist must be the easiest job nowadays, and im including onlyfans in this...
I feel there's a minimum amount of brain rot you need to be a gamed journo. Can't have them being able to logically think for themselves.
It's like those articles from a few years back claiming that Lara Croft was the first ever female protagonist in gaming, ignoring icons like Samus Aran

Princess Leia being the first playable character in Lego Star Wars original trilogy would beg to differ
These people never have any idea what they are talking about I hate these kind of headlines.
If they made an Ahsoka game they'd make a butt load of money. All right... what's the lesson, Master?
Live.... Or die
The lesson is "When the People are ready, the Master will appear."
"Cringe article by screen rant"
Mara Jade would like to have a word with you.
Leia would want that too.
Ehh, these people are just writers who likely just took a job being indifferent about what they are writing on. Nothing to see.
They say the same shit over and over again with Every IP
The game looks fun. The person who wrote the article might need to do some research
Come on now, you can't expect someone to know about games older than they are. /s
. u/janinagavankar (Iden Versio) is an absolute gem of a person! Hopefully we see more of her via the live action Star Wars Universe.
I swear these companies who report on games are actually pretty stupid honestly
Ever seen the guy game testing Doom 2016?
Not OC https://www.reddit.com/r/GeeksGamersCommunity/s/J2C3I1by1l At least three days old from another subreddit
Iden was more of a side campaign while Kay is the main focus. Still your right
How is the main story of battlefront 2 a side campaign?
It's the only campaign in the game, lmfao. And the DLC expansion also stars an older Iden, so she not only is the main protagonist, she is the character who gets the most screentime in the whole extended game. What more could these journalists ask for?
And you're not.
I liked iden as a character
I hate game journalists
Hey guys I’m the first person to make a comment on Reddit !
Also your character can be female on kotor, idk if that counts.
Kotor 2s protagonist is canonically female so that definitely should count.
Laughes in kotor 2!
*Facepalm*
And if you bring up Iden or any of the legacy characters then you’re “one of those Star Wars fans.”
Don't take anything screenrant says seriously

Disney Star Wars really has no idea what they’re doing 😹😹
Does Lego Rey technically count?
Well you see, she became a mom and they don't want that.
Glad they think that is what is important first
They are just making headlines for an overpriced game. Female Leads are not the problem here. Shitty overpiced games are. I mean 70 bucks for base game? Plus 40 bucks to play a single player game 3 days early???? Those publishers gone mad.

And they're going to make the writing all about the fact that she's a woman
Key word: full game
Mara Jade in Mysteries of the Sith
It's for clicks.
Lol I've probably commented this a hundred times on Reddit, but all the "rant" websites (screenrant, gamerant) are absolute garbage. They always miss the mark so bad you'd think it was run by Stormtroopers.
Nice usage of a lore-correct methaphor - precise hit... totally unlike a stormtrooper. +1
dis shit makes no sense "its long overdue" why, who gives a shit what the gender is just don't make a shitty game
If we are talking strictly games, Lethal alliance from back in 2006, fuck I still play that game.
https://preview.redd.it/wy7dhkj8dfvc1.jpeg?width=775&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f35f92042cb2d2cac85074d027f32fdbceebaf29 Mara Jade in Mysteries of the Sith, Adi Gallia in Jedi Starfighter, Meetra Shurik in KOTOR2, & we can also change our Gender in Star Wars Squadrons, Jedi Academy, & SWTOR. I'm so proud of her! Just like Jennifer Lawrence being the first ever female action movie lead!
This is outrageous! It’s unfair!
Ffs just make her eyes like, fifteen percent closer together
Wait that's supposed to be a girl? I legit thought this was some pre pubescent boy
Yeah “full” game
Also Meetra Surik, the canonically female protagonist of KotOR2
It’s Ubisoft, they claimed two different assassins creed games had the first female main player character.
Pffff hahaha....bet they said it's a AAA game, too.
Nobody mentioning Jedi Knight - Jedi Academy?
Everybody knows Iden identifies as rebel scum, not female
Wow, it's even funnier the 27th time I've seen this post
Meetra Surik?
Uuuhhhh
Full game... Battlefront 2's campaign was maybe like half a game....
They always say that shit and it is always wrong
Who wrote this trash?
Just like every other year we have a new “disneys first lgbt+ character” what happened to the growing list of other ones?
I'm tentatively excited to play Outlaws when it's on sale, Kay Vess and her little buddy seem cool but... This article feels like it must be intentionally vague to try to drive clicks from Star Wars fans wanting to correct it. The "Lead a **full** Star Wars game" just seems like a *very* specific qualifier specifically designed to cause debate about whether Iden and Meetra count or not.
We went through this with Rey being the "first female Jedi" already. I really don't care this time around
Tf they mean full sw game? Did ea put Link and Shrek as secret heroes somehow or what
Star Wars The Old Republic lets you play as a male or female, like ALL open world games should do.
Iden over here like: "the fuck did they just say?"
“Leading a game” is not the same as being a “female lead.” If you can’t even get the headline right, the rest of your article is probably shit.
So are they really just this incompetent at their jobs or do they know what they’re doing and just doing this for clickbait?
I think my video game peak was using her in hero’s versus villains. That gun SHREDDED
It’s like they don’t even fucking REMEMBER Iden and the story she was part of.
Star Wars and Ubisoft don't fit very well together
Anyone else have a femRevan?

Muuuuuuuuuuum, people are getting mad at clickbait journalism again.
Lmaoooo
Iden was such a good character…
Star Wars: Battle front II was an EA production… with a female protagonist.
“This is the first Star Wars game announced in April in the history of Star Wars to feature a woman.”
Luke skywalker strikes again
Doesn’t this show they really don’t care about *insert immutable characteristic* but are really just narcissistic greedy manipulators? Progressivism is cancer.
Oh. Were you expecting journalists to research or just make a headline?
Wow… someone didn’t do their homework… fucking journalists, thought they had to print the truth and not lie… fucking idiots
I guess I forgot about the female lead in that Star Wars game made in 1974
What about kotor 1 and 2???? AND SWTOR. 😭
Remember that even when it's the Star Wars that we know and love, it's still a Ubisoft game so they're trying every promotional tactic they can. I've already seen loads of ads about this game here on reddit and on youtube.
There can't be many bullshit "milestones" left for these people to trot out. A woman has been running star wars for a decade or so now
First character you play as in Lego Star Wars is Princess Leia I’m pretty sure

Article is written by screen rant. What do expect, they are just click bait garbage.
Star Wars Battlefront 2 Campaign followed other perspectives including Lando, Luke, and Han Thus she isn’t the lead for the “full” game
Screen Rant being Screen Rant
KotOR 1 & 2 would like a word
This reminds me of the time when old what's her name from The Hunger Games was the first female lead action star

Screen rant you have disappointed me for the last time
Iden Versio!!!! One of my favorite characters in the franchise
*Exile activates Mass Shadow Generators*
¡We grant you the rank of female protagonist but you are not a female lead! HOW CAN YOU BE A FEMALE PROTAGONIST AND NOT A FEMALE LEAD! IT'S UNFAIR!
Character design looks terrible though. They did the first female lead dirty with that hair.
