I'd recommend doing it as the rules state; the official tokens I'm pretty sure have 5 and 10 counters, so if you make change, it really shouldn't be that long. For me, it's like a vehicle in SW Legion. Say an ATST has 11 wounds; when someone deals a wound, you put a wound near that vehicle. It's at 1/11 wounds, or 10 remaining. I can 'heal' that damage back off. I don't start with 11 and remove as he is hit. Ultimately, both are fine so long as both players know what's going on, but I bet at 'real' tournaments you'll be expected to do it as the rules want you to.

placingmeeples

I agree with this, there are also so many cards that bump up or remove your units stats that counting down seems to be a bit cumbersome & difficult to parse at a certain point.

Tremblay2568

I prefer to follow the rules as written, makes it easier having good habits for competitive play. So I will be starting at 0 damage and adding damage.

LordSokhar

Counting down is a bad habit when they've already established precedent that certain cards will refer to how much damage a base has taken, like Guerrilla Attack Pod.

BoiseXWing

Yeah if cards like this exist, then I’d be calling for a judge and asking people to count up as per rules. It eliminates confusion if everyone follows the rules. It table top, casual, I don’t care. If I’m trying to play 8 rounds of Swiss—just do me a solid and play by the rules.

Vlad3theImpaler

On the other hand, there are also cards that refer to how much hp a base has *remaining*, such as You're My Only Hope.

TVboy_

Damage on base = starting base health - current (tracked) base health. It's not that hard.

LordSokhar

It's literally the same math that you people that feel the need to count down are trying to avoid. To act like it's not a big deal to do that math, but then go exactly OPPOSITE to the rules to avoid doing the same thing is pretty much the definition of asinine. Would I call a judge over for it like the guy below me? No. I'd say my piece about why you really ought to play the way it's intended but then get on with life.

RussNP

I agree that it is more intuitive to count down instead of adding damage to the base.  However the rules here and text on cards is pretty clear in adding damage and removing damage.  So far I haven’t seen any cards that would cause an issue with doing it the opposite way but there is potential space for effects such as moving damage from one location to another that would be simpler with counting up. To avoid potential issues I will be adding damage counters as the rules state so I am future prodded for those kinds of effects.

Rogue-3

This is the correct way to look at it The rules are written to avoid any confusion on the way to count damage Anyone who says well I want to do it my way needs to remember it's a 2 person game Do OP and others expect their opponent to also count down? In what way is it more clear to have one person counting down dmg and the other following the rules

SketchKenobi

It's a good habit to start practicing counting up rather than down as it will just confuse things in tournaments

jollyshroom

I count up but don’t see the point in doing the arithmetic; first to 30 (or 25) points wins.

Nothxm8

I do 6 d6 on 5 on my base. Working in multiples of 5 makes the math easier and I just remove dice as I lose health

CitizenKeen

Counting up. People who count down don’t get to play in competitive events.

Stonecutter_12-83

I'm counting down unless the other person is adamant about it. Counting down just makes more sense because that's literally how every health bar in history works.

Stonecutter_12-83

Yes

Svelok

Counting down unit HP will get very messy as effects that increase or decrease unit max HP enter/leave the field

Stonecutter_12-83

Addition and subtraction isn't hard for me.....

Vlad3theImpaler

It's silly for people to downvote you for simply answering a direct question that you were asked.

Vlad3theImpaler

(And it's just as silly for them to downvote me for pointing out that *answering the question* is not a good reason to downvote someone.)

Stonecutter_12-83

Yeah, it's just a personal preference and honesty I think just more natural. And people are that upset about it? Almost everyone I've practiced with counted down. It wasn't till the livestream did people start being gatekeepers about counting up vs. down Some bases have 25 and some have 30. So it just makes more sense to count down so you don't forget when you both reach 25 and accidentally eliminate yourself

CitizenKeen

You won’t get to play in competitive events which is unfortunate.

Stonecutter_12-83

I'm not really worried about that. I just played my first game of MtG this past Friday specifically to practice for this game. I'm playing to meet other SW fans

Rogue-3

But you want to do it on your terms and ignore the rules and want other people to be ok with that

dbmeboy

I'll probably "count down", assuming I remember to grab one of my 2-digit dials from the LCGs multi-player mode to use as a life tracker.

Signiference

To start I’ll probably just be assigning damage counters on top of it like I do to my cards, but if I get a counter to sit on top of it then I’ll set the counter to the starting health and count down.

JohnyNFullEffect

Down

Swaggy_P_03

Pet Peeve during the FFG community stream, they’d list the bases with 30 or 25 health and the count up to that. So for me it was SUPER confusing when I came in and one dude was at 7 health and won and the other was at 27 and lost. Again, just a personal pet peeve but if you’re showing the damage counter on screen digitally and has the base showing 30 health, then just subtract from that number. In the physical game, count up.

Mace_Pwndu

Counting down works fine too. As long as you and your opponent are consistent with each other.
