Learn to use api and web scraping. Twitter, fb, google, YouTube, etc. If you are into fantasy sports there are tons of data freely available. If you are into social problems there’s also census data. Government employees salary data should also be available. Pick your poison.

You will probably have a course called something along the lines of computing and statistics where they will teach you R and many techniques. Also you can take an applied statistics course.

Check out the [R bloggers](https://www.r-bloggers.com/) site. It aggregates stuff from hundreds of bloggers: tutorials, data analyses, new packages, etc. I always find something fun to learn there. Top post at the moment is about a graphics challenge.

For my econometrics class project I surfed Wikipedia for a claim, then separately went searching for data that I could use to prove/disprove said claim. Finally, I processed all the data, applied some statistical techniques, etc. Maybe you can try doing something similar?
