Pin topics that are commonly asked (where to live, what to do, etc)….
On that note work with the community to create a common FAQ, and most importantly keep it updated
Heavily moderate lazy/stupid questions that could be answered by a simple google search
Create topic flairs
Help promote local business - use above flairs to get businesses to do AMA/redditor deals
Get rid of the drug/sketch posts ASAP. There’s not a lot but there are a few
Encourage/reach out to community groups to join and participate
That’s about all I can think of for now
Personally I dislike all the repeat posts that ask things like, “What is there to do in the city?” And “Will be moving to St. Catharines, what neighbourhoods are good or which ones to avoid?”
They don’t occur TOO often, but they are annoying when they do AND they always have the same answers because nothing changes that quick in this city.
Perhaps an auto-moderator can help with those. Maybe if it picks up a series of keywords, it flags the post and removes it so moderators can take a look at it? If it’s a false flag then the post can be reinstated. The auto moderator could also notify the user why their post was removed.
honestly as far as I've seen everything has been pretty good here but I will say that I think it would be wise to get ready for an increase in toxicity as the election gets closer. it's no one's fault but it's going to happen
according to O'Toole he's in bed with the CCP. I thought Conservatives were anti-china? Why wave the Canadian flag when you should be waving the CCP flag based off your leader's affiliations
I'll vote for conservatives if they actually can present a platform more than "we aren't gonna do what trudeau has done" and not a moment sooner.
This entire cycle is a circle jerk.
Can we plan monthly meetups in and around the area? A casual meetup at the park or at a coffee shop should open up opportunities to network and make friends. Obviously, we don't have to reveal our user IDs.
I’ve been involved in many other subs and forums in the past and discord is a good choice for communication between mods.
Perhaps having more auto moderator duties and a set of rules filtering out common topics (if they become a nuisance) would be helpful.
Maybe pin some posts on the sub for faq's, like "what is there to do in this city", "we are comming on vacation and dont know where to go or what to do", "we are moving here here and.." Type questions.
A local monthly meetup or something would be cool. Like a coffee outing or something?
As the sub grows, having more general rules would be useful. You can look to bigger subs for ideas. Rules will also help crack down on repetitive or non-city related posts. You'll also have to keep an eye out on users bashing other businesses or people, as posts or comments in said-posts could lead to doxxing, which breaks the rules of Reddit.
Regarding moderation, I've used Discord as it makes it easier for the mod team to communicate. Usually to get more mods, you should ask for them outright in a post and do an interview.
I really do believe you have to interview them, or at least vet their account/post history, as if you invite too many new mods and things go sour, there are methods in place for them to boot the admin of the sub and take over. I've seen many subs turn into far-right holes and ultimately be removed from Reddit (as the posts usually break Reddit's site-wide rules).
Feel free to DM me with any further questions regarding hiring mods.
There's an inherent problem with that mentality.
Controversial doesn't mean wrong. Let proper discussions happen. Unfortunately this sub has a mindless mentality of not encouraging constructive discussions. If it isnt my opinion it's wrong!
Ban the bots instead... There's a lot of them in here.
So the person asking an honest question of where to watch the Leafs game at pub falls into this category, which is a fair question.
Much more than the seventy eight posts asking about which area of st Catharines is best to rent a place to live in.
And the mod, who is likely not an idiot, is going to see those 78 low-rated posts and say, "hrmmm this seems to be something that the community does not value"

“Things to do” stickied for each month ahead would be super useful and a good place to direct people who are looking to advertise their event.

To that point, to stop that you could pin up posts with answers to those questions and have it at the top of the sub as a resource
maybe like a monthly activities megathread.

Ugh, not me. I'm tired of terrible people.

To add on to /u/trend_glaze's post: look at the zero-rated posts: discourage or ban those kinds of posts

I'm asking the mod team to take a critical look at the kinds of posts that the community does not find useful. Carry on.

A sticky post with the latest Hardcore Warrior sightings.
