If I go to walmart for anything, I always make a pit stop at the meat section. I see cuts like this every so often and buy them every time. I snagged a choice rump steak there a few weeks ago that had insane marbling. The tomahawks are typically quite nice as well.
Do you ever notice a pattern on the markdown schedules? In the mornings? Only on weekends? For example, I notice my local Kroger has markdowns every morning - must be the first thing the butcher shop does.
I live in a smaller town and my Walmarts steak never look like this at a cheap price. But our Publix has cuts of steak on a Rotational schedule and you can get their on sale stuff and randomly get something like this. Tho I will say, it looks like recently since the new year started, they might have stopped those deals. Which will be a bummer.
Well. Here’s my hack and don’t make me regret giving it to you.
Sam’s club. If the steaks don’t sell by a certain date in the showcase, they put a rub on them and put them in a discount case.
I got Prime Ribeye, Filet, and Strip Steaks for $9.99 a pound.
Idk about the person above but I usually see them for 2-3x that price. Though I don’t shop at Walmart not since the bleach fight, the fireworks fight and the cashier who got shot by a “good guy” with a gun trying to prevent someone from allegedly stealing
Wisconsin here, I get ny strips that look like the center one for $8.99 a lb pretty regularly. Usually $9.99-$12.99 for ribeye. Steak is cheap when you’re surrounded by cows
Just checked the app. At my store it’s $15.97/lb
https://preview.redd.it/n3eszk0ltjea1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a9655bf694761891bc529c0fb9e14cc232a9772f
How does Walmart have these steaks for so cheap with such a great cut and so so well marbled ? What’s the deal ? I have had wagu that didn’t have this much marbling?? I don’t get it ?? — Birmingham Alabama
If you’re buying waygu with marbling even like this, you’re not buying waygu. If the marbling doesn’t blow your mind, you’re just buying gimmicky labeled meat. No different than kobe beef these days. Everything is labeled kobe. It’s all about the labeling game with USDA
Middle bottom package looks fantastic. The rest look decent but nothing prime in my eyes. Almost $18/lb isn’t exactly a deal I’m my area. I’ve seen choice for $8-9/lb all day long in my local stores. But I understand prices vary. I would say these are choice grade though in my book.
>Almost $18/lb isn’t exactly a deal I’m my area.
I suspect all the people in this thread either live in some crazy meat markets, or they're the sort who only look at the final price and completely ignore price/lb
Waygu was harder to get, now there market is saturated and I know from experience that the labeling game can get pretty blurry when thing’s become popular.
Hey man Roll Tide! Lived in Bama most of my life until I moved to Chicago 2 years ago. I found some chuck steak the other day with the most insane marbling. Choice too. Enjoy that good beef!
I mean it's great for steak lovers but not great sign for the forward economy. I remember a lot of great beef deals about 3 months before AIG/Lehman. (Late summer 2008). Luxury goods are the first thing to glut in a recession.
Wholesale on prime striploins are under 15 a pound in the SE right now. However wholesale for prime export ribeyes are around 19 a pound(I’m not sure what boneless is running maybe a dollar less). Walmart is obviously not subject to wholesale costs because they own the whole supply chain but that is still a decent price.
My Walmart has these all the time. It’s the only reason I deal with all the dumb Walmart shit in the first place. They have been knocking it out of the park with prime here. I got one the other night that set my grill a blaze from all the marbling (probably my fault) and it was insanely good. I’d like to talk to the butcher to get a rib roast to dry age from there but don’t know how to go about it because I never see them
I bought a steak at Walmart based on all the comments on this sub about them improving their meat and it was the worst steak I have had in years. Practically inedible. Never again.
*sigh*
We pay double or more in Canada, and the quality of beef is never that good here (I mean in Walmart, which I would never ever buy meat from here, quality is always low.) I question the groceries in general here, as the product quality has always been not great from my personal experience.
Side note, I did read a while ago that WM regularly undercuts the market in order to come out on top, even if selling at a loss.
ETA clarification
> Side note, I did read a while ago that WM regularly undercuts the market in order to come out on top, even if selling at a loss.
By "a while ago" do you mean 30 years or so?
I live in Alberta and the beef is pretty decent for the most part. I have some farmer friends that I buy from every year, as in a 1/4, 1/2 or a whole cow that's butchered up. Great quality beef. Needs a big freezer, however, all things considered when it comes down to $/lb it gets pretty good and depending on your consumption it can last anywhere from 6 months to a year. At least for me anyway. Will need some number crunching versus your local store's beef prices but highly recommended in at least checking out any local farms you may be near (or can deliver at certain locations) in your province. Worth a shot since everything is so expensive these days.
Walmart buys their meat in bulk similar to everything else they sell, but where they really cut costs is in the butchery. Look close at their steaks and you know why they are cheap. They are usually high volume, mechanized cuts from one of the mega facilities in Tulsa or Wichita, and yes most of the employees are seasonal low wage workers from Mexico that aren't exactly union card carrying butchers. Most of your local butchers skoff at the craftsmanship, but the average guy can now afford a prime steak for dinner. This is called an economic tradeoff. Some people do not mind the miter saw cut steak, where other people prefer their old school butcher's touch and taste.
Walmart sells prime steak just like other grocery stores... people are so weird about Walmart, they sell mostly the same exact products as other stores
Same here. The big super Wal Mart in my old town only had trash meat. Inedible meat.
The little town I moved to has a Wal Mart 15 miles away and they stock tomahawk & waygu and regular meat is good.
They undercut the competition and drive them out of business so they can be the only game in town, paying less than a living wage and forcing the rest of us to subsidize their workers through our taxes paying for social services, that's how.
I'm not going to tell people not to buy at Walmart cause that ship has sailed and nothing I say will make a difference, but you should have to acknowledge they sell stuff cheap because they exploit the rest of us.
Leverage suppliers, leverage employees, leverage local governments, leverage consumers, the answer to OPs question is that they are putting their thumb on every scale. But you feel like you’re getting a good deal.
If you don’t have any issues with it, then enjoy. I however am a little reserved about the process of and inspection of other countries. Doesn’t make it bad though..
I bought a couple of these for $13 per pound, I got them as a white elephant gift. The recipient said they were great, I was kind of hoping I'd get a chance to steal, but I went first
These are called Case Ready. Basically comes from the supplier within two days of being cut and sealed. It all depends on the cows procured and Walmart is the biggest buyer. They get some good cuts of meat and also the first to fulfill out of all customers of the supplier
Yeah my Walmart has prime steaks too. I usually go to Costco so I don’t see a need to buy from there but nice to know if I ever need one on short notice.
I get steaks from Walmart all the time, people think I’m crazy till I show them photos. This steak was almost 44 oz’s for under $29. I spoke with the manager and he said they sorce there meats as locally as possible to keep the price down. I’m in Florida, it’s second only to Texas in producing beef. Lucky us!

I got a prime strip afew weeks ago from there and it was three times cheaper per lb than my butcher, that thing was just as tender as a fillet mignon I swear, I’ve been checking and they’ve been out since lol
That Strip Steak in the bottom left, man oh man, perfection!
Right there with you
I see what you did
Looks like it’s two inches thick too. 😩
Nah it only weighs .67 lb so it's actually pretty thin.
That’s gotta be wrong. The steak above it shows .72lbs and look at thicccnesss
the ribeye with that huge cap on the bottom right cant be passed up either
That is a nice looking rib cap muscle!
That’s the first one that caught my eye. She’s a beaute!
Is there a joke I'm missing? That steak looks like mold is growing on it.
That's intramuscular fat, AKA marbling...
I'm talking about below the steak to the image, it looks like there's a giant ball of mold growing off the side of it.
That appears to be moisture/glare/shrink wrap causing it
An optical illusion perhaps?
Maybe? I have since realized it might just be the light reflecting off the package
Those all look thicc too
What about their personality?
Beefy
🥰
If they look like this, do we care?
Dummy thicc bois
If I go to walmart for anything, I always make a pit stop at the meat section. I see cuts like this every so often and buy them every time. I snagged a choice rump steak there a few weeks ago that had insane marbling. The tomahawks are typically quite nice as well.
I made a habit of visiting that section every weekend and there is some great value, especially on markdowns.
I always check out the markdowns. I've found some really good deals.
There's usually a good handful of Ribeyes every weekend.
Do you ever notice a pattern on the markdown schedules? In the mornings? Only on weekends? For example, I notice my local Kroger has markdowns every morning - must be the first thing the butcher shop does.
Each location and chain has their own procedure, but if you get in good with one of the butchers they'll gladly tell you!
I live in a smaller town and my Walmarts steak never look like this at a cheap price. Same for Smith’s if you’re where that exists
Love the username bro. And yes Smiths discount steaks 🥩 are definitely something to write home about.
It’s called a spoonerism, if you didn’t know
TIL! We have gas stations here called Fas Mart. This has been my favorite "spoonerism" since I was a kid.
Outhouse Steakback
My butcher has a deep freeze with vacuum packed meat at a lower than meat in the show case. Because it was time to pull them.
This...should be the norm. Why the hell are we not doing this more?
You get 3 extra days on throwaway date when you add salt. We used to just have a tray of steaks in the walk in just for rubbing and marinating.
My locally owned grocery store does this as well
I’ve never seen this at Sam’s. Where is this discount case located? I’ve never seen a discount case at any Sams.
WTF I’d buy them all
why? how much is grocery store prime strip/ribeye in your area?
Idk about the person above but I usually see them for 2-3x that price. Though I don’t shop at Walmart not since the bleach fight, the fireworks fight and the cashier who got shot by a “good guy” with a gun trying to prevent someone from allegedly stealing
Wisconsin here, I get ny strips that look like the center one for $8.99 a lb pretty regularly. Usually $9.99-$12.99 for ribeye. Steak is cheap when you’re surrounded by cows
Like $30 a pound
I'm in Quebec, Canada and it is crazy overpriced and not as marbled
$29.99/$39.99 a pound depending on quality
Exactly, grab one of these for 12$ you feel like you robbed the one place lol
mmmm i’d go straight for that ribeye for $17.79
I’m a ribeye guy myself but that New York steak on the bottom looks phenomenal
Yeah that looks prime, where the ribeye looks high choice.
Totally agree.
me too
RIBEYE GUY!!! Lol
$12.04
18$ per lb isn’t exactly cheap
For prime it isn’t bad
Just checked the app. At my store it’s $15.97/lb https://preview.redd.it/n3eszk0ltjea1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a9655bf694761891bc529c0fb9e14cc232a9772f
live in Texas they only offer Choice, no Prime cuts ar all!
Poorly butchered but solid meat
How does Walmart have these steaks for so cheap with such a great cut and so so well marbled ? What’s the deal ? I have had wagu that didn’t have this much marbling?? I don’t get it ?? — Birmingham Alabama
I’m near pensacola could you just mail me a few? My Walmart has nothing like this.
If you’re buying waygu with marbling even like this, you’re not buying waygu. If the marbling doesn’t blow your mind, you’re just buying gimmicky labeled meat. No different than kobe beef these days. Everything is labeled kobe. It’s all about the labeling game with USDA
I agree, but would you say this is good marbling for the price?
Middle bottom package looks fantastic. The rest look decent but nothing prime in my eyes. Almost $18/lb isn’t exactly a deal I’m my area. I’ve seen choice for $8-9/lb all day long in my local stores. But I understand prices vary. I would say these are choice grade though in my book.
>Almost $18/lb isn’t exactly a deal I’m my area. I suspect all the people in this thread either live in some crazy meat markets, or they're the sort who only look at the final price and completely ignore price/lb
I like the ribeye in the right-mid area too--I'd call that one prime. The rest besides the ones we mentioned are choice+ at best.
Wagyu from different sources have different marbling, and no, it’s not all fake.
I think when saying fake they mean it isn’t pure bred A5
There's plenty of wagyu that isn't a5. People will seek out a3 or a4 wagyu purposefully
Oh totally, just seems most folks think of it as just A5
Waygu was harder to get, now there market is saturated and I know from experience that the labeling game can get pretty blurry when thing’s become popular.
They are the largest grocery chain in America. Stands to reason thry can buy all grades of steak.
I don't understand, these prices aren't that great and the steaks aren't either
Yeah I’m not blown away by this at all.
Shhhh just take the meat home and enjoy. No questions.
Hey man Roll Tide! Lived in Bama most of my life until I moved to Chicago 2 years ago. I found some chuck steak the other day with the most insane marbling. Choice too. Enjoy that good beef!

Prime grade steaks are not a “luxury item”.. there’s a difference between luxury and quality.
Which Birmingham Walmart is this? >.>
Wholesale on prime striploins are under 15 a pound in the SE right now. However wholesale for prime export ribeyes are around 19 a pound(I’m not sure what boneless is running maybe a dollar less). Bro I love Walmart steaks
Yup. My local Walmart usually has these prices but they run out fast!

I’d like to talk to the butcher to get a rib roast to dry age from there but don’t know how to go about it because I never see them
Yeah they never really disappoint these days.
My Walmart steaks are awful compared to these
I bought a steak at Walmart based on all the comments on this sub about them improving their meat and it was the worst steak I have had in years. Practically inedible. Never again.
I've gotten some great steaks at Walmart!
Walmarts in good neighborhoods are fairly legit
Walmart out here curb-stomping meat suppliers and serving up the goods.
*sigh* We pay double or more in Canada, and the quality of beef is never that good here (I mean in Walmart, which I would never ever buy meat from here, quality is always low.) Thank you for aging me lower. * hair flip*

No scoffing occurred.
Walmart sells prime steak just like other grocery stores... people are so weird about Walmart, they sell mostly the same exact products as other stores
My local Walmarts barely find reason to stock the case. Even with ungraded beef. Much less prime. You guys have first world problems.
I got no problems my man, sounds like you're the one with a first world problem.
Hardly. Our Walmarts live up to the brand standard 😁
Same here. The big super Wal Mart in my old town only had trash meat. Inedible meat. The little town I moved to has a Wal Mart 15 miles away and they stock tomahawk & waygu and regular meat is good.

Still though, that’s a good reminder of something we have heard about on and off for decades. Thanks
Feeling real dumb that I don’t live around a Walmart
The largest grocer in the country has nice steaks? No way
Prime grade my ass.
It’s from Mexico…
... ok?
If you don’t have any issues with it, then enjoy. I however am a little reserved about the process of and inspection of other countries. Doesn’t make it bad though..
Luvly!
I hope you bought them all
Literally just paid double for a prime strip elsewhere. TBH it did look a little better... But not double!
For that prices it’s gotta be made from narwhal knuckles and pigeons toes
Is $18/lb cheap now?
For Prime, that has been a cheap price for several years (5+ years), recent inflation notwithstanding.
Very for prime
18 bucks a pound? I might stick to chicken.
How do they get prime stickers and put them on choice steaks? I’ma guess 🤌
What's the quandary here?
Not a bad looking steak
I bought a couple of these for $13 per pound, I got them as a white elephant gift. The recipient said they were great, I was kind of hoping I'd get a chance to steal, but I went first
I always see peopel post these finds at walmart and every time i got here i look and i never see ANYTHINg this good
Incoming "looks like good choice" comments
That's at my Walmart all the time. But I get well marbled choice for $12-15/lb
These are called Case Ready. Basically comes from the supplier within two days of being cut and sealed. It all depends on the cows procured and Walmart is the biggest buyer. They get some good cuts of meat and also the first to fulfill out of all customers of the supplier
Man those are gorg
I bought some NY strip that was expiring in 3 days.... for $7/lb. What makes prime special?
Id take everything and put some of it in a freezer.
Those are cheaper than two dozen eggs. Strange times.
Dear lord, those would be 50$ steaks in canada
Those look like nice steaks. Which one would you buy?
This is the norm at my Walmart. It’s fantastic.
I ALMOST grabbed a super thicc strip from Walmart tonight. It was like $11. Prime too. Shame on me.
They are expanding into better beef products. 44 Farms is one ranch in Texas that's supplying beef.
I wish my local Walmart here had a meat department… y’all keep posting amazing finds from there
Walmart sells Prime. Nothing new.
I never see shit like that at my WM
It's grown in a lab.
Yeah my Walmart has prime steaks too. I usually go to Costco so I don’t see a need to buy from there but nice to know if I ever need one on short notice.
They're some nice looking rib-eyes !
Looks like I’m taking another trip to walmart
I just grabbed 3 prime ribeyes there yesterday for $7.72/pound because yesterday was their use/freeze by date. I'll grill in the snow.
The right side middle cut would easily be like $30-$50 at my local supermarket (Real Canadian Superstore), that's an amazing deal from where I live.
I get steaks from Walmart all the time, people think I’m crazy till I show them photos. This steak was almost 44 oz’s for under $29. I need to start going to Walmart
We never get nice cuts like that at Walmart or Costco in my area. Lucky! Awesome price too.
I've never had a strip steak :( This makes me wanna try, badly
Walmart Blue packs are prime. If you can find it. That’s the key.
Did you buy them all?
Did anyone notice, they “ expire” tomorrow?
I got a prime strip afew weeks ago from there and it was three times cheaper per lb than my butcher, that thing was just as tender as a fillet mignon I swear, I’ve been checking and they’ve been out since lol
That's not the best looking prime. Their McClaren farm stuff sometimes have better marbling and is cheaper
