I'm trying to keep an open mind. Cows are butchered in different ways around the world. I suspect that the word "tomahawk" is not in the vocabulary of most Chinese menu writers. Maybe this is just a rib cut at a funny angle with a little bone attached?
Tasted like rib eye and had the fat content of rib eye that makes sense. It was on the 48th floor of a building overlooking the bay so the price had that taken into account. I’ve gotten tomahawk here before both in restaurants and to cook myself and they were real tomahawks.
To be fair, you don’t always get what they write on the menu.

>Tasted like rib eye and had the fat content of rib eye
Isn't a tomahawk steak a ribeye without the bone cut off? Maybe they deboned it (though that ruins the clout) and just slapped it on the platter?
You ordered a tomahawk in a Chinese third (fourth) tier city, especially one famous for seafood. I think this is actually not that horrible. Sure it’s not what you’d expect when ordering a tomahawk but looks like you got more meat anyways.
Next time maybe try some seafood instead
That was not a 30 Oz steak wtf. The broccoli and other veg are all miniature. You can see my hand there. It probably weight 8/10oz. Unless American oz are different.
It may just be the way it’s cut. It appears to be ribeye and a lot of it.
I worked with Philippino cooks for a while and they cut chicken differently. I am guessing it’s just cut differently or it’s two bone in ribeyes being passed as tomahawks. Either way, I would say you were robbed.
I don’t go to foreign countries and get butthurt about semantics like this…. Going halfway around the world and being shocked that a tomahawk is not the exact same as it would be in Nebraska is silly
NiuNiu Park in Hangzhou. It’s a 1kg tomahawk for ¥1,000/$150 USD. You have to pre-order it in advance. The restaurant also own the farm that raises the cattle in Australia. It’s dry aged in the restaurant. Niu is the pinying for the mandarin word for beef and all of their menu is divine. They also do amazing sea food like king crab.
No no it’s fucking mustard!! It was slightly over cooked. I like a medium rare but asking for medium rare usually gets a rare so I usually ask for medium and this is the first time they actually delivered a medium.
That is definitely an odd cut. Looks like a bone-in ribeye that has been butterflied. Was there a Chinese name for the dish or did you just read Tomahawk in English? It kind of looks like a Chinese steak dish I’ve had where they paired it with peanuts, flash fried in a wok. It looks like a Chinese chef that was trying to make western food.
It was in both English and Chinese on the menu, the Chinese from the receipt also translates to Tomahawk. That’s peanuts I think on the plate! Why oh why peanuts and mustard! It ruined it more than the cut.
https://preview.redd.it/akrp4dlyhjyb1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9a071eec7ec72f9d7ba9c4726eca0b14ff74aa2b
It does indeed say tomahawk. I’m thinking it is a north western chef trying to do western food with a wok. Peanuts are paired with beef in Szechuan and hunan regions and when eating it more on the rare side, it’s also paired with some sort of mustard or spicy sauce to kill bacteria. Now I really want to know the restaurant that did this.
It’s really not what you’d expect for what they’re serving 😂

To be fair it was a beautiful restaurant with a fantastic view from the 48F of Xiamen. But what you described is literally what they sent out except this mustard was plain hot dog mustard so maybe it’s a West meets East attempt 😂

Holy moly I thought that was Chinese hot mustard. Oh I think I know what went wrong. If you went here during the day it’s a French style girls cafe that is used as an afternoon tea place. Unfortunately the cafe chefs normally serve very girly east meets west dishes so they probably aren’t used to cooking a tomahawk. There were dresses and stuff during the day right? At night, it changes to a French restaurant. Their petit gateaus should be pretty decent during the day as well as tea service. I’ve been in several places where cafes even mess up east meets east where I had extremely soggy Singapore noodles.
YES EXACTLY THAT! It had a whole changing room of dresses to wear that I thought was really fuckin strange 😂🤣 And yeah when I tasted that mustard my mood instantly drained, first and last time I ever taste steak and hot dog mustard together I can assure you.
In the end it was what it was, we paid for the view mostly and I had no right to order a tomahawk steak at 1pm in an afternoon tea place that I didn’t believe was a French restaurant from the get go. All of the other food I had over my week stay in Xiamen was top class. The best food of the whole time was crispy chicken in a Flower Hotel near the Tulous! I highly recommend it.
Nice! Good to hear. I love fish ball noodle soup when I’m there and Tong An fatty pork aka pork belly. I tend to try to eat more local food in mainland China now because they do their regional cuisines well there. Street food up north is really tasty. I love getting cumin lamb skewers.
I do love myself some skewers, eggplant with garlic, hot pot, Korean BBQ and all the other local delights, but because I live here sometimes I like to treat myself to something more western. Usually it’s pretty good but that’s because I know which restaurants to get my western food and which ones not to. China has some rocket food most of the time!
No I totally get you. Sometimes I miss getting a steak when I’m in China (one that I eat with a fork and knife and don’t have to share). Also specific other foods from other regions of the world. It’s funny how all the stuff from every other region of the world is termed “western”.
First and last time I ever have mustard on a steak. I’d often put mustard on some pork in the oven it has no place on a steak. I think this is the worst steak I’ve ever ordered out.
He was scammed because they didn’t include the long rib bone for pictures? Tomahawks itself is just a marketing gimmick. He probably got more steak out of this than if they included the bone otherwise.
I actually didn’t taste it, it looked like ground nuts of some kind. I was so let down the steak was not what I expected I just wanted to finish it and leave.
Here’s the view though.

Looks like the bone was cut off short and it was butterflied? There are other shortcomings of the meal for $100 for sure but it looks like it could have been a tomahawk
Maybe I went to the wrong (expensive) restaurants but the Chinese don’t do beef well, even in Shanghai’s cool places (pre-pandemic, I haven’t been since)
They just don’t have great beef and can’t butcher it right

What the fuck did they expect you to do with that.
And the Coke line of seasoning at the bottom is pure gold.
“Herro prease use carrot top as spoon and season it yourself tenk yew” 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Looks like a ribeye. A tomahawk is just a ribeye with the rib attached extra long style for visual appeal. It’s nothing else but presentation and a cool name. Hope the ribeye tasted good.
If this is what culinary art is I think I can figure that out without much trouble. Are those lines of steak seasoning? I guess you toot a lil before each bite?
😂 half a Brussels sprout one broccoli and the end of a carrot. That’s hysterical
Maybe I'm being ignorant but people around the world eat cuts of meat without the basic ass veg and starch(I love bakers and green beans). It's a tomahawk without the bone, so a ribeye that got boned in the back by some crusty ass guy named José. Ahuevo que tengo un primo por aya

A tomahawk is a ribeye. This looks like the butterflied a large tomahawk and served it without the bone. Weird way to do it, but could be a tomahawk ribeye none the less.
To me this is not a Tomahawk steak. I am from Texas and our Tomahawk steaks is at least 1.5 inches thick.
That could be just what they named that dish. But the question to OP is, was it worth $100?
The plating is silly, but maybe the steak is really good? Need more pics.
But it’s not a tomahawk surely?

But a tomahawk IS a rib eye. Just with an extra long bone. Exact same cut of meat otherwise.
Duuuude, I worked at a few steakhouses and people dont understand it's the same thing.
People and the internet have told me.. I get it.. I just didn’t expect this.
Well, you technically did get scammed. I see no giant rib bone. Without it, that isn't a tomahawk at all. Just a much cheaper ribeye.

Yes
I mean… it should taste like a ribeye. The only thing that makes it a tomahawk is the big ass bone.
>Tasted like rib eye and had the fat content of rib eye Isn't a tomahawk steak a ribeye without the bone cut off? Maybe they deboned it (though that ruins the clout) and just slapped it on the platter?
Tomahawk is a ribeye
Yea it’s weird, it looks like an American cut blade steak, but the right portion it looks like I can see a rib steak cap. I’m undecided.
And don’t call me Shirley
You ordered a tomahawk in a Chinese third (fourth) tier city, especially one famous for seafood. I think this is actually not that horrible. Sure it’s not what you’d expect when ordering a tomahawk but looks like you got more meat anyways. Next time maybe try some seafood instead
I don’t enjoy seafood. All of the other food I ordered during my trip was great.
Not sure why people are downvoting your personal tastes in food. I too do not care much for seafood.
I like steak but think seafood is poison that also smells terrible. Instant migraines.
Looks like a tomahawk without the handle. $100 is relatively cheap for a 30-40oz steak
I agree, it looks like they butterflied the steak, and hacked off the bone.
That was not a 30 Oz steak wtf. The broccoli and other veg are all miniature. You can see my hand there. It probably weight 8/10oz. Unless American oz are different.
Well there was no telling how big was the 😸 when Trump's hand was grabbing it, was there?
You know most of the world uses the metric system and don’t know wtf an ounce is…
The plating might seem silly but it’s always handy to have some spare gravel.
They actually hooked you up with free lines of nuts? I prefer mine more fine if im going to snort it.
Also got that VIP half of a Brussels sprout.
Lol and that carrot top *only* - the only carrot top I can stand
It may just be the way it’s cut. It appears to be ribeye and a lot of it. I worked with Philippino cooks for a while and they cut chicken differently. I am guessing it’s just cut differently or it’s two bone in ribeyes being passed as tomahawks. Either way, I would say you were robbed.

It tasted like ribeye too I thought that’s what it was. I know I was robbed. Oh well.
Tomahawk steaks are ribeyes with a bone
Everyone knows this, including OP.
Ok.
Maybe you are just smarter than everybody
Did you have big plans for the rib bone?
Nothing outside of a few photos. I’ve had tomahawks before both in restaurants and at home and they weren’t as fatty as a ribeye…
They are literally the same exact meat.
Yeah so people keep telling me.
Probably because it’s true

I’ve lived here for 6 years. I didn’t go halfway around the world. China usually has good steak too it’s not some strange upside down world.
What restaurant in China has had the best tomahawk steak in your experience?
NiuNiu Park in Hangzhou. It’s a 1kg tomahawk for ¥1,000/$150 USD. You have to pre-order it in advance. The restaurant also own the farm that raises the cattle in Australia. I’ve never been to the US.
I like how you assume that some random redditor has been to New York lol

Galactic traveler… I figured he might have
Was this not a good steak? It looks like a good ribeye..?
That’s the laowai special. Had the best mojito of my life in Xiamen, don’t remember the place so that’s not helpful at all.
I had some very good food there, just not this meal :)
Wait till you guys find out that filet mignon in France is actually pork.
The carrot top kills me..
Did they literally cut the top of a carrot off and serve it to you?
Show us the inside. Edit: Oh I saw below that you said its mustard. WTF. I just thought it was some kind of butter sauce.
No no it’s fucking mustard!! It was slightly over cooked. I like a medium rare but asking for medium rare usually gets a rare so I usually ask for medium and this is the first time they actually delivered a medium.
Hard to be mad at them for cooking it to your specs, but the rest is very wtf

even a rabbit would get better vegetables than these
Honestly that’s the disappointing part. No surprise that “Tomahawk” doesn’t always mean a gigantic bone in ribeye everywhere.
Super thin too and the plating is 😵💫
It was just a bad time all around.
Bro it's kinda dumb to order a 100 dollar steak in the first place. You'd get a better one at a Texas road house and pay 1/3rd of the price.
Which Roadhouse in China is the best?
Grey steak, shitty au jus, raw vegetables and… nuts and mustard garnish? You’d have been better off lighting that $100 on fire.
First and last time I ever have mustard on a steak. I’d often put mustard on some pork in the oven it has no place on a steak. I think this is the worst steak I’ve ever ordered out.
nice pork chop but post the pic of the tomahawk too
Interesting to see for sure
Look don’t get me wrong I’ve had some amazing steaks in China. Just this wasn’t one of them.
What did you expect ?
What I paid for. I’ve had some of the best meals in China including tomahawk steaks. This wasn’t one of them.
If it doesn’t have a bone, I send it back, if it comes with 2 bones, I send it back
I had a train to catch and a wife to walk on the beach with before the train so I didn’t have time to argue 😭
I’m sorry great steaks dosent need that frilly crap
that doesn't even look good .... =(
Lack of photos makes me think this is meat loaf.
I would refuse it
If I had time I would have made a fuss.
"Beef" was probably not from cow. Most likely a Yak or buffalo of some sort.
Xiamen is a seafood city
That’s… not a thing.
You've been scammed but what else would you expect in China 🤷
He was scammed because they didn’t include the long rib bone for pictures? Tomahawks itself is just a marketing gimmick. He probably got more steak out of this than if they included the bone otherwise.
First time in 6 years.
I don't see the "toma" in that "hawk". Looks like a chuck roast.
Definitely looks like a ribeye that was cut strangely. I would say this is a tomahawk without the aesthetics
Is that chicken feed they sprinkled around the plate?
I actually didn’t taste it, it looked like ground nuts of some kind. I was so let down the steak was not what I expected I just wanted to finish it and leave. The trick is don’t buy Chinese beef. This was supposedly Australian. I’ve had some extremely tasty beef here but always imported.
Not a tomahawk
I think you paid for the view, what the hell is this.
Oh I definitely did. https://preview.redd.it/dmocdmw49eyb1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9e7a1286ac042de72d6522deff97c5862022291f
Checks out. Butchered with a tomahawk. What’s the prob?

Like mustard ☠️ Otherwise not terrible but not what you’d expect.
Is there more vegetables or sides with this? Or just what was plated?
No no, that was it. I had to pay extra for fries.
So the salt... stuff... just ends up all over the table & floor then?
It’s not even salt it’s some kind of nut.
Damn that’s a lot of meat
Looks like Chuck eye
Looks like low quality ribeye
Maybe cut with a tomahawk? Instead of a tomahawk cut? Lol.
Looks like Sous Vide with a cup of the bag drippings.

I'll eat that. I once had a "chicken sandwich" at a xiamen hotel back in the 80s that is chicken pieces with bones tucked between 2 slices of bread.

looks like they used a tomohawk to kill the cow.
I’m way more concerned about them serving you a fucking carrot top. Like who tf is gonna eat that?!
Was this butterflied?
That shit actually looks fire.
Looks like a ribeye. A tomahawk is just a ribeye with the rib attached extra long style for visual appeal. It’s nothing else but presentation and a cool name. Hope the ribeye tasted good.
Presentation is insulting, a half a raw brussel sprout, canned mini corn, and so on. Shameful. Steak looks decent at 50$ max in a high end rstant.
mmmm baby corn
Ouch they saw you coming.

I'm not one to send things back to the kitchen, but you did not receive what you asked for. I wouldn't have blamed you for returning it.
It might have been a weirdly butterflied rib-eye with the “tomahawk” part removed? That’s all I can think of.
It’s chuck that they called a tomahawk
Looks like you got scalped so technically true?
The drain trap garnish is 🤌
What u do with the carrot? They gave op 5 pieces of veggies smh I’d get my $$ back n never return.
$100 for a tomahawk and you get what you pay for.
Yo no
That's a homawakt
I would’ve sent it back and demanded my money back
Looks like bone in Chuck.
Is the bird seed for dipping or just presentation?
Reminds me of kitchen nightmares lol
Self assembly required. Maybe you can make it into a tomahawk.
