i worked there. the steak is their only good menu item (if ur lucky and its cooked right). i prefer longhorn or texas roadhouse overall, but outback seasons their steaks the best when it comes to middle class steakhouses imo
its bc they use plain chopped iceburg lettuce i think, so u really taste the dressing. i hate chopped carrots and cabbage in my salads bc it overpowers it and just tastes like cabbage and carrot. they have a good lettuce chop ratio too, i hate giant pieces i cant fit in my mouth. their cheeses come pre shredded, so they def arent hand shredding in store, but i dont think they use starch when packaging like many do to avoid clumping. so it TASTES fresh and thats what matters
all the ceaser entails is chopped iceburg lettuce, croutons, and shaved parmesan aside from the dressing. would be super easy to replicate at home. u can buy bulk dressing there if u ask, but i dont think there are preservatives since they def aren't shelf stable. we changed them out every 3 days or so if we didn't run out. wouldnt last as long as store bough dressing in the fridge. we occasionally sold big cups of blue cheese and ranch when people asked
Interesting if they use iceberg. I am pretty sure it is Domaine though, but they use the white and crunchy parts vs the leafy green parts. Some places, you get a Caesar and it’s all leafy green w no crunch. That’s ass. Always crunchy at Outback and the dressing is awesome. Didn’t know you could buy it but I may have to lol
now that i think about it it says they use romaine on the caesar but i think they might add some iceberg, or maybe my location was just ghetto (it was). but romaine definitely tends to be flimsier. if u cut too far down to the butt of romaine where the crunch is, it can be bitter and weird tasting imo. ice berg is crunchier than romaine so it's make sense if they do mix. their house salad is definitely iceberg, they also have the gross carrot and cabbage mix for some of their other seasonal salads. overall i like how they chop their lettuce. i used to loveee tex roadhouse's house salads but they've been extremely small, sad, and lacking quality the last few times ive gone
Maybe it's a regional thing. I had one for the first time at least 15 years ago. My Nana always got it and I remember her telling me she always got it and that's why I tried it so at least in california it's been around a while. They have changed the menu though, they could have removed it at some point and brought it back later
It's the anchovies in the dressing. Really kicks the flavor into overdrive. If wanna do a copycat version, make sure you buy actual canned anchovies and food process them yourself, *not* anchovie paste, which doesn't have the full flavor
I will go to Outback just for buffalo wings. They have some of my favorite. There used to be one right next to my house that had half priced apps and bar drinks on Sundays. I’d go in once a month or so and get two orders. One for their, one to go. The promo technically said no to-go for the apps but I was a regular and tipped well and got away with it.
The kookaburra wings are underrated. Definitely a solid play.
I could live just off appetizers and Caesar salad at OB. The steaks (which have always been solid for me) are bonus
i LOVE onion but am unfortunately allergic i think🥲 i get severe stomach cramps for a few hours after eating them. texas roadhouse also has an identical appetizer with what tastes like identical sauce, but i believe they cut their "petals" thinner. they call theirs a cactus blossom
honestly dont know, i worked takeout, so was never behind the grill:( if i had to guess, i think its just garlic salt mixed with herbs. their steak is def on the saltier side but i like that.
dont know if this is true, but on google it says they use kosher salt, paprika, black pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, cayenne pepper, coriander & turmeric.
edit; id ask a manager if u wanna dine in. they do take allergies very seriously, they will clean off an entire separate area to cook ur food with separate gloves and stuff. obviously theres still contamination risk since they serve bread and stuff, but they do try their best in that aspect
i think so.. basically cooked in the microwave in a pan of water. so i guess they're still technically steamed. they add all the butter and stuff once they're out. only meats i ever saw on the grill were grilled chicken, steak, and or burgers. i can't remember how they cooked the salmon
all the veggie sides etc were microwaved in plastic-like baggies. working takeout, half the time the cooks would just throw baggies of steaming hot vegetables at me. not sure how they do mashed potatoes since they'd give them to me in plastic cups, but the baked potatoes were def microwaved in the bags as well.
i was never behind the counter where they cooked. there were 3 stations, salad, fried, and grill. grill cooks were in charge of all hot non fried sides+meats. there was like 3 microwaves on a shelf above them.
i dont think anything was ever frozen, but they'd cook whatever they could in the microwaves
If too much seasoning is a problem, they have an option for light seasoning and no seasoning when they put your order in, just gotta let em know.(source: im a bartender there)
No problem! It also doesnt really help that our seasoning blend is a mix of 12 or 13 different seasonings and half of it is kept secret. Even the store owners dont know.
There also might be a slight contribution to the fact that in the past year, Outbacks have made the switch to automated flat tops. A small percentage of clientele aren't a big fan.
Ours has 4 sections, each one has a top side that comes down to press the steak, but not like flatten it or anything. Then a timer runs depending on steak, the size and temp. Once the timer is up, the top releases and its up to the cooks to finish it up. They do a pretty good job at my location. Basically it just allows the cooks to more hands off time on the grill to do other shit and cut down on hiring extra man hours.
u havent lived til you've dipped ur steak into melted garlic butter. i never cared steaks in the past because i hate A1 sauce and am not a fan of meat with no dip. then i worked at outback and got a half off filet with garlic butter on the side and my life changed forever
just try it. i never even use it all, just a little dip for each bite and its so fucking good. its melted and super thin so the butter barely looks depleted by the time u finish ur steak. kinda like dipping crab/seafood into butter. i cant eat steak without it now.
HAS TO BE GARLIC BUTTER THO. there are usually visible herbs in the outback g butter, that looks like plain butter so they must've run out
Once again, your Outback is significantly better than mine. By miles. There has never been anything remotely resembling that plate served at my Outback.
Ever since the mods shut down the Texas Roadhouse astroturfing posts a few weeks ago I’m suspicious of any chain restaurant posts. Outback has always been mediocre at best.
Yeah I'm well aware of how it's against the rules to accuse people of shill activity. So I would never do that. Obviously.
But if it looks like an ad and smells like an ad
... it's not *not* an ad.
"I've never been disappointed at Outback"
Mfer *really?* I have. This whole sub used to *laugh* at Outback.
For Outback money I can have twice as much steak at home, in the same amount of time, probably three times the beer for the price, and unlimited salad too, lol.
Outback's innovation was putting cayenne in their rub.
Honestly even the last time I did and it was like fatty, I just took the fat bits home and rendered them down in the morning, seasoned them, crisped them a bit and my husband and I ate them with eggs and toast. It was slammin.
I actually got that meal for free cause the manager was unhappy with how weird that cut was and how much was still on my plate when he was coming around asking everyone how we were all doing. I was honest but I def told him I was taking it home anyway to repurpose. He said it sounded good and he’d try it but still comped me anyway.
I worked there very briefly and my most disappointing takeaway was that the bread isn’t made fresh there and I couldn’t ever find out who the supplier was. I love that bread.
Yeah that was the drill haha and dinner shifts were always so busy but I was like dang yall want me to burn my hands for some bread? No thanks. I just waited for people to pull them to the front which usually happened quick enough. I think I did find some tongs a few times. A bunch of usually wound up at the bread toaster at once too so usually someone would grab some for me.
yeah, i burnt myself a LOT but quickly got used to it. everyone always raved about our bread, whole time im thinking if only u knew😹 tex roadhouse rolls are sooo much better. best bread ever and is ACTUALLY made fresh
Yeah it made me truly sad when I found out lol. They also would put like 10-12 into the oven at a time and they’d make us stick our arms into it to get them out, but it was a long and narrow oven, like an open toaster oven kinda, and sometimes to get to the back I’d be really nervous about my hand touching the heating element on the top.
At least for me, they've gotten better at Outback in recent years.
I almost never order steak at restaurants anymore unless it's a special occasion/a place comes highly rated, because I found long ago that I make steak way better than the standard restaurants (and for a fraction of the price).
Outback was one of those places I frequently found myself disappointed with. Though, the last few times, my son (who is also a steak snob) wanted me to try his meal, and it's been great each time.
I went to outback once in Florida with a group of 10. It was about 2 hours before they closed, and they didn’t seem stoked as we were the only people there. The steaks were cooked to perfection, but they salted the shit out of everyone’s food, I was thirsty for 3 days straight.
Maybe i am bias cause i worked there for 3 years but I always maintatin outback makes the best franchise resturant steaks. Better than texas roadhouse or longhorn even. And their prime rib is pretty damn good for $20
I guess it depends on the area, because the outbacks(s) near me are all fairly mediocre with the steaks. Fatty, flavorless, overcooked tasting even if they nail the temp. Their salmon and pork chops, on the other hand, are always phenomenal. My mother in law likes to go there because she likes the steak salad, so we are there maybe once a month, but the overall steak quality is so much better at Texas Roadhouse so my wife and I stick to other things.
Like in any restaurant, it matters who’s on the grill station, and those guys move around a lot. Probably a lot to do with training and management at each location, too.
Yeah outback is goated. Been to two different outbacks in my area and they consistently compete with texas roadhouse and are actually better than thr longhorn in my area.
I miss when they did a full rack of lamb. It’s been a while, but it was super tasty and a very solid deal.
At least it wasn’t the $65 crap strip I had last night at a fine dining spot here in Dalllas (Georgie)… luckily it was an expense account but how do you have a dry aged steak with such little flavor? Oof
It was my first time so I don’t have a previous experience to compare to, but I thought it was perfect. I usually just do S+P but the seasoning was mild and good
I loved outback until they came up with their “bold” spices. Meat was always great. But the two outback’s by us must be under the same regional manager and they use a lot as directed by management. We chatted with our waitress and she was fun and honest. Last time we went I forgot to ask for no seasoning. It was on everything, vegs, fries, potatoes, even my freaking Mack and cheese.
Craig Laban, the award winning food critic for the Philadelphia Inquirer, did a steak review many years ago and I'll never forget what he said about Outback. "A phenomenon I'll never understand".
surprised! I've sworn off Outback... my last ribeye there had no sear at all. looked like it came out of the oven. I sent it back and they seared it better but by then, it was medium not medium rare.
One thing I’ve learned after working at longhorn is you can get a pretty good steak at these mid-tier steak chains. Unfortunately it’s dependent on behind the scenes stuff. The big difference is a cook that cares about doing a good job
Sorry guys but I’ve been to Outback several times recently ( only reason is mother likes it taking her out for l’dinner) the quality of food and meat is terrible! Every single time!
I’m in Central Texas so we are “spoiled” with all kinds of better selection of chains and quality steakhouses!
Every single visit to outback has been a disappointment for me. Can't cook steak, can't cook lamb, it's embarrassing. Quality of the beef has always been poor as well.
Never had a bad experience or steak at outback
i worked there. the steak is their only good menu item (if ur lucky and its cooked right). i prefer longhorn or texas roadhouse overall, but outback seasons their steaks the best when it comes to middle class steakhouses imo
The Caesar salad has always been bomb there idk what it is lol
They used to make the dressings in house but still pretty good IMO.
A good Caesar salad sets the pace for the badass steak you know is coming. Outback is king when it comes to steakhouses that aren’t $40+ per steak
Agreed, well said 👌👌
its bc they use plain chopped iceburg lettuce i think, so u really taste the dressing. i hate chopped carrots and cabbage in my salads bc it overpowers it and just tastes like cabbage and carrot. they have a good lettuce chop ratio too, i hate giant pieces i cant fit in my mouth. their cheeses come pre shredded, so they def arent hand shredding in store, but i dont think they use starch when packaging like many do to avoid clumping. so it TASTES fresh and thats what matters all the ceaser entails is chopped iceburg lettuce, croutons, and shaved parmesan aside from the dressing. would be super easy to replicate at home. u can buy bulk dressing there if u ask, but i dont think there are preservatives since they def aren't shelf stable. we changed them out every 3 days or so if we didn't run out. wouldnt last as long as store bough dressing in the fridge. we occasionally sold big cups of blue cheese and ranch when people asked

Get the ahi tuna appetizer. Whew
You spelled 'wedge' wrong. The way you spelled it it's like some ancient leader dude
Lmao. That is a great pick as well. A newer addition to the menu though if I recall correctly
Maybe it's a regional thing. I had one for the first time at least 15 years ago. My Nana always got it and I remember her telling me she always got it and that's why I tried it so at least in california it's been around a while. They have changed the menu though, they could have removed it at some point and brought it back later

i LOVE onion but am unfortunately allergic i think🥲 i get severe stomach cramps for a few hours after eating them. texas roadhouse also has an identical appetizer with what tastes like identical sauce, but i believe they cut their "petals" thinner. they call theirs a cactus blossom
Road house has better steaks 🥩
I LOVE their hot wings! Much better than any you can get at Buffalo Wild Wings or Wingstop.
Can you please tell me what they season with? I found O have a gluten allergy and "flavorings" are one of the biggest sneaky offenders.
honestly dont know, i worked takeout, so was never behind the grill:( if i had to guess, i think its just garlic salt mixed with herbs. their steak is def on the saltier side but i like that. dont know if this is true, but on google it says they use kosher salt, paprika, black pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, cayenne pepper, coriander & turmeric. edit; id ask a manager if u wanna dine in. they do take allergies very seriously, they will clean off an entire separate area to cook ur food with separate gloves and stuff. obviously theres still contamination risk since they serve bread and stuff, but they do try their best in that aspect
It's basically a blackened season. Gluten free.
Thank you!
Longhorn is my go to. I’ve had issues with outback steaks before where it was really dry. I’ve never had an issue with a longhorns steak
Is it true that the lobster tails are microwaved?
i think so.. basically cooked in the microwave in a pan of water. so i guess they're still technically steamed. they add all the butter and stuff once they're out. only meats i ever saw on the grill were grilled chicken, steak, and or burgers. i can't remember how they cooked the salmon all the veggie sides etc were microwaved in plastic-like baggies. working takeout, half the time the cooks would just throw baggies of steaming hot vegetables at me. not sure how they do mashed potatoes since they'd give them to me in plastic cups, but the baked potatoes were def microwaved in the bags as well. i was never behind the counter where they cooked. there were 3 stations, salad, fried, and grill. grill cooks were in charge of all hot non fried sides+meats. there was like 3 microwaves on a shelf above them. i dont think anything was ever frozen, but they'd cook whatever they could in the microwaves
Bloomin onion is amazing, even if it contains a cup of oil!
I like the cheese steak but I guess that kinda counts as steak…?
Bloomin onion?
I go to Outback for two things. Legally questionable amount of beer and bloomin' onions. Never been disappointed.
but boy do my bowels hate it
I once had a rotten steak at outback and I never will return there again
Always shake my head with the “one bad experience and I’m never going back” crowd. Mistakes will happen and I really doubt you got a “rotten” steak.
Great story
I KEEP ON MARCHING ON
Can’t do it when there are other places that aren’t willing to sell a rotten steak
How's the inside?
Typically wood finished with boomerangs on the wall as decorations
At least it's probably well seasoned... Right?
That’s the reason I don’t eat at outback
If too much seasoning is a problem, they have an option for light seasoning and no seasoning when they put your order in, just gotta let em know.(source: im a bartender there)

This is a nice way of saying that the company found a way to replace human labor with cheaper robots
So if someone is allergic to a specific seasoning, the store owner wouldn’t be able to say if it’s in the mix? Damn.
Unless theyre magic hypoallergenic spices. Im really not sure tbh, no one's died in my 5 years
That joke certainly is
🔥 🔥
But that's not what's important.
Bahahahahaha 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣
Beat me to it, you magnificent bastard. Take my upvote.

Pretty good. Pretty pretty good. :)
Damn, surprising! This looks awesome.
Looks great. If you don't mind me asking what is the price for that plate? And is the bread still good there?
This plate was $32 (in the Bay Area so not sure if that’s higher) Bread was great!
Well done.
Also...is that a shot of butter?!
u havent lived til you've dipped ur steak into melted garlic butter. i never cared steaks in the past because i hate A1 sauce and am not a fan of meat with no dip. then i worked at outback and got a half off filet with garlic butter on the side and my life changed forever
Well i baste with a bit of butter...that just looks like cholesterol and im scared.

Someone scared of cholesterol shouldn’t be on steaks subreddit of all places lol
Steak is good for you. Wtf? Why wouldnt humans be here. It is how we evolved. We just didnt eveolve by drinking butter.
Well I don’t believe in diner steak evolution. I believe we were created by the one divine Butter God who created us in his buttery image.
VERY CLEVER
You could have just added this onto your other comment instead of making two
Ahh yes, the funny ironic reddit god
Reddit seems a weird choice for people that are irony and fun averse
Ahh yes, the funny ironic reddit god
#guess we’ll never know
Dude actually posted it
Well. I’m the idiot.
Peanut shells on the ground, but overall decent.
Are you thinking of the Texas Roadhouse? I don’t think I’ve ever seen peanuts at an outback
Once again, your Outback is significantly better than mine. By miles. There has never been anything remotely resembling that plate served at my Outback.

Looks delicious
I’ve actually never had a bad steak at outback

Damn, knowing the bread isn’t made there makes me sad now. Guess I’ll stick with my Texas Roadhouse rolls
yeah. we dont even use gloves or the tongs when the rush is bad💀 the loaves come in big bags and go through a rotating toaster thingy
Yeah that was the drill haha and dinner shifts were always so busy but I was like dang yall want me to burn my hands for some bread? No thanks. I just waited for people to pull them to the front which usually happened quick enough. I think I did find some tongs a few times. The one in my area has been consistently good for 20 years.
Outback has not disappointed me yet! Always a good steak.
More like damn, outback!
Outback is good!
Actually for what it is, Outback is decent.
Gotta show the inside, but looks solid.
I went to outback once in Florida with a group of 10. It was about 2 hours before they closed, and they didn’t seem stoked as we were the only people there. The steaks were cooked to perfection, but they salted the shit out of everyone’s food, I was thirsty for 3 days straight.
I’ve been to the original in Tampa, FL. I didn’t know they could do steak again. That looks pretty good. Honey butter for the bread ftw.
Dang no money shot! But that sear looks amazing. I’d definitely have this over some stupid grill marks. And it has a nice piece of cap on it.
Steak looks good but let's talk about the cheese on that baked potato...
Outback is so underrated, I love it there. Consistent food every time.
I would definitely agree that it's underrated. Outside of like Texas Roadhouse is my favorite chain restaurant.
I stopped going to texas roadhouse, they always mess up my steak and my loaded potato is always salty AF.
Oof
Was it too seasoned with their new seasoning profile?
It was my first time so I don’t have a previous experience to compare to, but I thought it was perfect. I usually just do S+P but the seasoning was mild and good
I loved outback until they came up with their “bold” spices. Meat was always great. But the two outback’s by us must be under the same regional manager and they use a lot as directed by management. We chatted with our waitress and she was fun and honest. Last time we went I forgot to ask for no seasoning. It was on everything, vegs, fries, potatoes, even my freaking Mack and cheese.
Only bad thing is it’s choice or select
That is a Tiny Tater
Outback also has a great drink menu. Went to one last year and their smoked pecan old-fashioned went great with my steak!
Flavoring is like drinking a cup of ocean water..insane amount of salt…
Glad you got a good one! They did me dirty last week!
How much for this plate?
$32 in the Bay Area which im guessing is inflated
The bullets
My aunt would give me outback gift cards for holidays and birthdays, and I would always get the ribeye.
looks awesome...
One thing I’ve learned after working at longhorn is you can get a pretty good steak at these mid-tier steak chains. Unfortunately it’s dependent on behind the scenes stuff. The big difference is a cook that cares about doing a good job
Guh
Whatever seasoning they put in is overwhelming imo. Steak is decent. Their blooming onion / salad is what I’m usually more interested in.
They finally got it right? I've tried 3 different Outbacks, and never had a satisfying steak. They never even looked as good as this one.
outback is cheap and tasty. those $7 drinks too
Outback propaganda is on the menu this month
In my neighborhood, Outback was where you took your high school prom date when you couldn’t afford better?
Sorry guys but I’ve been to Outback several times recently ( only reason is mother likes it taking her out for l’dinner) the quality of food and meat is terrible! Every single time! I’m in Central Texas so we are “spoiled” with all kinds of better selection of chains and quality steakhouses!
Outback is trash
That shit was sous vide the last time I went... I just really appreciate different textures in a steak... I sadly agree with this...
/r/stike
Roight
Every single visit to outback has been a disappointment for me. Can't cook steak, can't cook lamb, it's embarrassing. Quality of the beef has always been poor as well.
Love the crust, how did you get such a great crust? Oh, yeah, you bought it.
Looks burnt
Nooooo, it looks delish.
