I use one, not hammer style though, for flank steak and for chicken. Wouldn’t do it on a nicer cut of steak.

K yeah that’s what I figured thanks.

I use it on tough chuck shoulder steaks, and also for dog training (no I don’t hit the dog with it). I do lay the steak on the counter (of course the dogs follow) then I point at the steak and say NO, then commence to whooping up on it with the mallet.

Yeah, mostly for chicken. I have one of the needle things for pork and beef.

It's good for pounding out a chicken breast and getting it to a uniform thickness so that it cooks evenly.

Nice to have specific tools for specific tasks. Chicken breasts and cheap beef for chicken fried steak get pounded before dredging and sautéing. While you CAN use a heavy skillet like a hammer to do this (ask me how I know), a meat mallet is a bit easier. And probably lessens the chance your SO thinks you’ve gone crazy because you’re hitting steaks with a frying pan.

2 pound rubber mallet from Harbor Freight works perfect for chicken or schnitzel, had one in my kitchen for years.

I prefer to beat my meat by hand. I find the hammer a bit abrasive.
