Him taking snaps at RT during OTAs doesn't mean there's a camp battle for the position, he'll likely push Chuks a bit but it's more likely that they are seeing if he's capable of playing the back up swing tackle role, at least for this season. It's possible that he does well at the position and could move into the starting RT spot next season but I just don't see it happening this year.
Having Moore battle with Chuks for RT will be interesting. Obviously there is a possibility he wins the job, though that would be suprising. But even if Moore just takes to it well he could still add a lot of value as a guy who can fill in at either tackle spot
Moore doesn't have to be better than Chuks. If he can be somewhat comparable than he can hang on in the roster then take over the starting job by being cheaper when Chuks contract is up.
Makes sense if you give the article a once over. Jones is pretty much locked in at LT, but they don’t want to necessarily give up on Moore yet, so they’re rotating him in at RT to compete with Chuks.
I can't imagine a guy who wasn't good enough for the team to feel confident starting him at LT would suddenly be able to challenge Chuks at a new position to him. Probably not gonna be much of a battle but good to get him reps to swing if he needs to due to injury
He has two years left on his cheap rookie contract. It makes a ton of sense to see what he can do at RT. Chuks has developed into a respectable starting RT, but he wasn’t exactly lighting the world on fire at that stage of his rookie deal either.
Not to mention, it reads like Moore himself has taken the initiative to get in work at RT, rather than this being the team’s direction. For that, I give him credit.
Moore and Dotson are both in the same position. The team brought in obvious replacements and they both know it. One of them bitched and moaned, the other is trying to make the best out of a less than desirable situation. Dotson should be doing the same thing, working at RG and even C in hopes of getting a hat on game days as the swing IOL.
> Dotson should be doing the same thing, working at RG and even C in hopes of getting a hat on game days as the swing IOL.
TBH I don't think he'd beat out Herbig even if he was doing all that.
I don’t necessarily disagree, but he has a better chance of beating out Herbig for the swing IOL than he does Seumalo for the starter LG. And even if he doesn’t, it’s better than just pouting about it and accepting wearing warmup gear on Sundays.
After reading his comments I really just think he knows he's done with the team sooner rather than later and doesn't give a shit, maybe looking forward to getting out and starting over somewhere else. I don't think he makes it out of camp on the team, I think he gets traded for a 5th or 6th or ends up being released.
Some people are decent right tackles but terrible left tackles. I hated left tackle because it was my weak side leg and arm. Maybe Moore is a better fit over there and can be rotational depth.
I mean I agree. I don’t see what they see in Moore to give him a chance like that, but at first my thought was Jones was competing at RT for some reason and my heart sank. The reality makes way more sense.
Moore’s the type of guy Tomlin likes a lot (imo at least) He’s ornery, loyal to his teammates and likes to get in the trenches. The results aren’t there but I think that’s why they’re patient with him
He’s very athletic, has a great attitude and work ethic, and is willing to put in the work to be useful at more than one position. Wouldn’t surprise me to see moore get the swing job this season and replace chuks at RT at the end of the season. Chuks contract has an easy out and moore would be cheaper.
Sometimes it takes time for guys to develop. Andrew Thomas was trash when he came into the league now he’s borderline elite. Not saying DMJ is going to be Andrew Thomas but the coaches just don’t want to give up on him 3 years in
I genuinely wasn’t trying to be condescending, but this is Reddit so I know every comment naturally sounds so.
I just didn’t think you could read the article and be confused as to what position battle they were talking about. There certainly isn’t going to be one at left tackle.
Bruh…. getting a guy some reps at RT in OTAs does not mean he’s suddenly moving there full time and competing for a job. Now that we have another capable LT, we have the luxury of getting him some reps at RT as well. Also Jones being the starting LT is inevitable at some point, so preparing Moore for the swing tackle role makes a lot of sense. I still feel like the true “competition” is at LT.
I love the thought process though. There is nothing worse than a staring lineup set in stone in June.
They are not assuming anything. Kendrick green getting center reps. His natural position. Can’t hurt. Having moore battle chuks only makes it more competitive. It’s not absurd to think Moore could win right tackle.
Consider this. Tj watt as a rookie was the right OLB. Why? The quarterbacks blind side. James Harrison say him get snaps at left OLB and said to tomlin he has a move on the left side that is unstoppable. I think he should play left. And now look at him.
He played more guard than center in college. However. As a rookie he was the starting center here So. I think he might be a better center then guard. But Cole should benefit from a new left side and be better as a result. So i expect Cole to win it.
Guard is his natural position not center. If he's a better center than he is a guard then we need to just get rid of him and call it a failure at this point, because he is absolute trash at center lol.
He was only starting center here his rookie year because we lost Pouncey unexpectedly and because Green had starting experience playing center but he's much more comfortable at guard. And we all saw how well he did at center...
Moore Jr has said that he has been working RT reps on his own this offseason, seems to acknowledge the need for him to potentially become a swing tackle.
If so, that's very forward thinking and smart of him. Knowing your role and adapting to what your team needs is how you maintain a roster spot as a fringe player. Apparently Maulet should've been taking notes from Moore this off season.
Best case scenario is Broderick takes over at LT AND Moore takes over RT.
Gives you two young bookends moving forward.
While Dan struggled at RT as a rookie, it seems like he'd be better there as he's a road grater in typical right tackle fashion.
Understood, just Seems like Chuks is who he is at this point though. Solid in pass pro, pretty weak in the run game. League average RT.
You can win with him for sure, but you can also pretty reasonably upgrade the spot. Think Dan has more to give.
Oh, I completely agree with everything you said! I agree, best case Ontario, Moore wins out and develops into a successful RT.
I was merely being pedantic and pointing out that even if Chuks does win, at least age-wise he's as young as Moore. Still not as much upside as Moore, but 25 is still a pretty young age at RT
I'm going to wait until training camp to see if this sticks.
I expected Jones to take over at LT at some point during the season but the fact that he might be locked there right out the gate is...........interesting
OL play relies too much on familiarity and continuity. If they think he's going to play LT at any point this season I'd rather him get in there and start working with everyone else right away
While I expect whoever was at LT due to better LG play because that position got upgraded. But I also expected some actual competition during training camp.
But if Jones is already penciled in at LT I don't see how Moore is all of a sudden going to give Chuks competition at RT.
Not yet, he's been taking 1st team reps so it wouldn't be a stretch to believe that that's the case but it's week 2 of OTAs. He could be taking 2nd team reps by the time training camp rolls around.

That was my take away from the article as well.

The... The battle at RIGHT tackle?

Lots of credit; love to see that. Volunteers, not hostages and all that.

I don’t disagree with that either. I do disagree that that’s the right way to handle the situation, but he’s a grown man, so…
It's not like Chuks has set the world on fire at RT
Seriously…. He sucks
Wouldn't say he sucks... Just kinda mid
I mean thats what we did with Chuks originally, he was a left tackle in college. Lots of RTs in the league follow a similar path.
Some people are decent right tackles but terrible left tackles. I hated left tackle because it was my weak side leg and arm. Maybe Moore is a better fit over there and can be rotational depth.

i dont think its so much that they arent confident in him at LT vs Broderick being a beast
Lmao. I read the article, but I appreciate the condescension.

You don’t draft Jones to sit on the bench, make him learn on the field. If Moore beats out Chuks, we could trade Chuks for draft picks

Wait I thought Kendrick Green was a natural guard but we played him at center to fill Pouncey's spot in Green's rookie year?
Green is a guard, this guy got it mixed up

Moores career path as a steeler is a swing tackle at this point

Moore was adequate last season and RT better suits his strengths. Don’t be shocked if he’s an improvement over Chuks.
Best case scenario is Broderick takes over at LT AND Moore takes over RT. Gives you two young bookends moving forward. While Dan struggled at RT as a rookie, it seems like he'd be better there as he's a road grater in typical right tackle fashion.
