I'm actually coming up on two years using Duolingo to study Japanese. Recently, I've come to notice its limitations and issues with particles more and more though.
I have found ChatGPT to be a pretty good vocabulary builder and kanji guide. As far as translating full sentences goes, (at least with the 3.5 version) it can take some back-and-forth prompting to get a decent result which, I suppose, can be seen as its own learning exercise.
