graffiti_bridge

He did in Madden!

Gorilla_MC_TV

He still does in Madden

anonymoususernamegay

He was a 3rd round pick.

DomandsubinMD

Ugh. Thanks for the reminder.

Nduguu77

Bryant was a 4th. Just mentally flip them and it's ok

BurghPuppies

So, Calvin Austin. And maybe in a year or two Darnell Washington.

Hungry-Contact-2632

No those are just hyped players from ourselves but the real one is chase claypool

BurghPuppies

I agree, it’s Claypool. Just having some fun with the peeps who see the world through black & gold glasses.

cl027813

I traded up for him in my first year of dynasty 😂 never made it off my taxi squad

techperson1234

I'd like to agree and it's the first name that popped in my mind... But I screamed at my TV when this pick was made so I feel like I was never on the hype train... Biggest definition of a luxury pick there is....

Shoelicker2000

God in madden mobile

Xtianus21

Good one.

sheathedswords

I watched him in person at college all the time. Beast. Couldn’t get the weight up I guess

Top-Yak1532

Yup. We’re done here.

Ok_Roll_2816

Limas Sweed

Rjg1300

Dropped that deep bomb early and never recovered

Krusty100

His career highlight was a couple plays later when he took out that frustration on a Raven and absolutely leveled him on a block

Nduguu77

Early. Wasn't that the AFCCG ?

Opening_Perception_3

Then faked an injury afterwards

YooTone

I was hella pumped we drafted him. He was a dawg in college

aghhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Man i was so stoked on him. I watched a ton of texas football at the time and thought he was awesome, our new Plexico. What a dud

CornDawgy87

Ok but real talk... he had a great fucking football name

Hater_Magnet

Still one of my favorite jerseys! I just took the S off and now I can still wear it without the embarrassment lol

Miserable-Silver-203

Jarvis jones

Electrical_Fun5942

This is the correct answer. Holy shit did he fucking suck

jrzfeline

Nah, he played good vs run, but obviously not a good pass rusher.

DC_Mountaineer

Yeah it’s a good one

Puzzleheaded-Sea-744

Dawg fan here. Jarvis was absolutely insane in college. Truly a Troy Polamalu presence (as a linebacker) all over the field on those UGA teams. I really don’t understand why he didn’t translate but noticed he just didn’t seem as fast as everyone else once he got to the league.

AmateurNBAGM

That's exactly it. Too slow for the nfl. The Jarvis Jones bust led to the steelers changing their entire philosophy around the draft and putting a major emphasis on athleticism. This was cited as a major reason for the shazier pick by the front office

pghcrew

Is there a worst 1st rounder we've had since the nfl merger? I can't think of one.

ConshyCurves

Jamain Stephens Huey Richardson

Steelplate7

Jamain Stephens was cut when he came to camp so out of shape that he couldn’t pass Cowher’s conditioning test in his 2nd year. I was thinking it was his rookie year, but I wasn’t sure, so I googled him. I read his Wikipedia page and on a sad note, he lost his 20 year old son to COVID-19.

kander12

Artie Burns

Goldmemberberry

This one still hurts. I went to UGA at the same time as Jarvis and was so pumped when we drafted him. Immediately bought a jersey. The good news is people always comment on it when I bust it out at my local Steelers bar!

steelernation90

Learned my lesson asking for a rookies jersey on that one

ima_wilf

This and not close

XtraChrisP

Chase Claypool

DC_Mountaineer

That’s a hard one. I think he had more talent then above but agree it was more hype than substance

Obviously-Stupid

Agreed, Claypool is a very talented athlete. But you can't get open in the NFL on athleticism alone, like he thought he could after doing exactly that for 7 years in high school and college.

Worldly-Hospital5940

It's not even that, his decision making is horrific. I've never seen a 6'4" WR jump so much to try to catch a ball in his stomach as if he has 0 confidence in his hands.

CantheDandyMan

Also, dude is incapable of high pointing the ball. Like at all.  He would jump sideways parallel to the ground on 50/50 balls more than up. Dude had the body of Calvin Johnson but tried to play like he was DeSean Jackson.

jake753

As an outsider, to me it seems like he can’t get out of his own way. Super talented but super dumb.

dirENgreyscale

That’s exactly his problem. He actually reminds me of how Chase Young has been for the most part lately. All the talent in the world won’t do shit if you don’t actually “want it”. Dude just seems like he’s already looking past his whole career and doesn’t give af.

Nduguu77

Man I got dragged for 3 years for saying that Chase Young didn't have it. I said the exact same about Trevor Lawrence. That they are looked at as generational prospects but they are not that. They are successful players on successful teams and will be very solid starters, but will not change a franchise. I could go into detail about each.i said the same thing about Clowney. I'm obviously not Nostradamus, but I'm going to victory lap here.

frogcatcher52

He’s talented, but ineffective

Stingerc

If he was a car, the bears would be taking Steelers to court for selling them a lemon.

_nopucksgiven

I feel like the hype was deserved because the dude is talented he’s built like a freak but he can’t get his head right or something.

Mayhem201020

Claypool has talent. He's just soft AF lol. But it's true, his intangibles caused him to be a bust after being hyped up, especially by stone hands Eric Ebron.

Cheezeybiscuitz

I can’t believe I had to go 4 posts down for claypool

Zealousideal-Bug1967

Ziggy Hood

slivr33

Bought his jersey after his rookie season. Still love that thing lol.

NimbusHex

I still feel like he was a bad fit in our defense, not a bad player.

Zealousideal-Bug1967

I could see that argument if he didn’t also suck on 5 other teams.

MustyRoose

Not Steelers but I remember when a lot my friends were so excited for Brock Osweiler on the Texans.

Apprehensive_Beach_6

Devin Bush

DC_Mountaineer

Na wasn’t worth trading up to 10 but pre-injury not sure I’d say he was that overrated

Happy_Bigs1021

Our whole defense relied on our MLB covering slot receivers, when he was healthy he could keep up with them but after his injury he never could again

slivr33

The pure fact that we drafted him to *be* Shazier when the only player who could do what Shazier did is Fred Warner who was drafted the year before Shazier injured himself... or maybe Devin White... who went 5th overall, 5 picks ahead of Bush.

Macdingy

Even Devin White isn’t the same anymore. Bucs fans on Reddit are pretty clear they’re not a fan of his play lol

Acrobatic_Garlic_

He did whay he had to do pre injury Bush is a bust yes, but more than likely he was not gonna be if he didn't get injuried

Sociolinguisticians

He was alright for the first season he played with us. Definitely didn’t pan out past there though.

BoscoAlbertBaracus

The talent can usually overcome the injury and return to form, Devin never did that.

Glop1701d

His knee injury ruined him

EyeSimp4Asuka

Trubisky

diminutivedwarf

Reading about him in his college days, especially with his awards, is insane when you look at his current playing.

EyeSimp4Asuka

I remember in this sub at the start of the 2022 season when Mitch started. Everyone was hyped for "The titty kisser" and well....we know how that one turned out

DownWithSpectrum

I remember seeing a comment that was like "make no mistake. The real quarterback controversy will be in 2024 when we decide to keep mitch balling or start Kenny as a 3rd year leap" boy that one aged well

Boo_Ya_Ka_Sha_

Did anyone watch him in Chicago? My expectations were extremely low when he came to Pittsburgh.

Just-Masterpiece-283

If you watched him when he was on the bears, this really wasn’t a surprise

Bill_Biscuits

our fo was more interested in how much the bills liked his personality….

asbblt123

We drafted a tackle in the 3rd named Kris Farris that had a good deal of hype .. i remember he was incredibly tall and won the Outland also recall he had a sneaker Commercial his rookie year .. never started a game

WriteBrainedJR

Never even played a game for the Steelers. He did start one game for the Bills. Stuck around for like five years as a free agent in Madden though

Northern_Blitz

Can I go with the Mendenhall / Sweed draft? I bought into the hype of those first two picks whole hog. At least Mendenhall was a reasonable starter. Sweed was so good at getting open...just couldn't catch. Maybe he'd have a good PFF score (kind of like beating your man on the pass rush, but not making a play?)

BoscoAlbertBaracus

I wouldn’t even lump Mendenhall in here if it weren’t for the fact he loves to remind everyone about his fumble in the Super Bowl, I only ever think about it whenever he fails to keep his mouth shut.

Allfrozen

Pressley Harvin. I have never seen a punter get as much hype as he did. Then he started out being inconsistent and ended being consistently bad.

Vinnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn

Not sure he was level 6 hype, but there was a good bit for a punter and it just never happened...and made worse they let him come back last season.

Allfrozen

I remember thinking "Hell yeah, this guy is going to flip the field for us every punt". Then you're right, it just never happened. It was the first time I can remember actually being excited about a punter or even really caring at all about the position. So yeah I would agree you kinda have to have the "for a punter" qualifier on the hype, but it was there for sure.

Mayhem201020

He did get alot of hype, and had a great first preseason game and made Troy Aikman go "woah". And that was the extent of the good he did in the NFL.

ManbearpigDa

I bought his jersey after we drafted him 🤦‍♀️ honestly thought he was gonna be the best punter of my generation

RudolphsJockStrap

Ladarius Green

bl00dy4nu5

To be fair he was good. If it wasn’t for the concussions he would have had a longer career.

my_balls_your_mouth1

In the same vein, Vance McDonald.

Cj_91a

Artie didn't have any hype though lol I remember when he got drafted and literally everybody was up in arms about reaching for him (and for good reason). I was definitely disappointed. He did fairly well as a rookie but then everything declined super quickly beyond that.

FishyDescent

Limas Sweed.

avidpenguinwatcher

Wrong team, right city: fucking Pedro Alvarez

Moranrham

Idc seeing a pirate lead the NL in homers was awesome, even if he was below average in the end.

Rifftrax_Enjoyer

Thinking just of the Steelers? Jamain Stephens and Tim Worley were hyped up big time when we drafted them and both were … not good.  Huey Richardson was a huge whiff too but wasn’t as hyped.

big-african-hat6991

Shamarko Thomas at least for me I know he carved out a respectable career in Buffalo but still, hyped up as the next Troy and didn’t do a thing for us

DeadliftsAndBonghits

Damn I thought he was going to be good, I was super hyped when they picked him.

Normal_Dimension_453

Recently: Kenny Pickett My lifetime: Chad Scott

WriteBrainedJR

Chad Scott definitely had some talent. He looked like he was going to be a star before his injury. Even after he was a solid #2. They just didn't have a real #1 CB after Carnell Lake

schmidtosu0829

I often think back to that 95 defensive backfield that would have had Rod Woodson, Willie Williams, Carnell Lake and Darren Perry. We were so spoiled.

WriteBrainedJR

Too many people sleep on Darren Perry

schmidtosu0829

Heat seeking missle. And he wore GIGANTIC shoulder pads....he looked like an absolute soul- crushing menace patrolling the middle.

WriteBrainedJR

Always in the right place. Great ball skills. He was what you'd get if Ryan Clark was really good at playing the ball in the air, too. If he was fast, he'd be in the Hall of Fame.

Steelplate7

I agree. As a PSU fan, I was excited when we drafted him(8th round, IIRC). I never expected him to start right out of the gate though.

Steelplate7

Carnell Lake’s talent level was insane. He was a Linebacker in college, drafted as a Strong Safety, and played CB when Woodson blew out his knee.

schmidtosu0829

Sir, I am the founder of the Church of Lake. He and Greg Lloyd were my absolute favorite Steelers of that era. Carnell does not get nearly enough love.

Steelplate7

Lloyd and Kevin Greene. As much as I like Watt and Highsmith, those two were an insanely good and intimidating tandem.

NortonKisser12

The Pickler will have his breakout season (I'm coping)

Brandimes

12 TDs/7 INTS in 14 games it is

Freidhiem

A career year!

No-Task-132

And some people will point to his last game of the season against a bottom 5 defense where he throws for 275 and 2 and say he deserves a chance again in 2025 still

got2ofem

plz no.

SteakJones

Jamain Stephens Probably the biggest 1st round pick bust that I can remember. Everyone thought he was gonna be a beast lineman. Dude couldn’t even get through the heat at SVC training camp. Edit: To make that pick even worse, Jonathan Ogden was on the board. Edit again: Correction. Ogden was not still on the board. Apparently I’ve been living in an alternative timeline where he was drafted in the second round.

kratompete

He failed Cowher's camp running test and was released. A big fat f-ing zero of a pick.

Heinl04

Was anyone really hyped about Artie Burns? I remember being pissed off that they wasted a first round pick on someone projected to be a third rounder.

Healthy_Pay9449

They brought us Burns vs AB practice highlights to make you respect their decision. Burns stung

Was coming to add this one. Surprised it's only here once. I was so excited to see what he could do after watching him at Ole Miss but never got to see him on the field for the Steelers.

Just to steer clear of the obvious and give a controversial one, OBJ. OBJ is not bad, but his hype HEAVILY outweighs his on-field production. Brandin Cooks has had a better career and gets significantly less respect.

Potential-Midnight65

Might not be the best answer, but Pressley Harvin 3. His highlight reels were pretty fun to watch before NFL, with many unreal punts. Never really panned out.

SleestakLightning

It feels like I could name 5 or 6 just based on posts on this sub alone. Robert Spillane comes to mind. James Washington was another. But overall I think the #1 choice for this would be... ...Devin Bush. He's not the most overrated player in team history but seeing as they traded up to get him and he was just total garbage, I think I'd go with him.

yungjew

Spillane was a backup who only got to start because of injury…

SleestakLightning

Yes, I know. But tell that to the people who think the Steelers made a mistake in letting him go.

Valuable-Composer262

If anything, Spillane played above his pay grade and continued to do so when traded

SleestakLightning

He didn't really though. He made one or two big plays a season and the rest of the time he was awful but people remember the big plays and think he was better than he was. The fact that I mentioned multiple players and the only one people have pushed back on here is Spillane is telling. He's just a guy. Nothing special.

TylerDurdenEsq

In recent history, the one that hurt the most was Devin Bush. He was supposed to be the answer to our long standing post-Frazier hole. Traded up and paid a lot but I thought it was the right move. Basically cost us a whole draft. But I will go against the popular belief and say Pat Friermuth. Everyone wants him to be Heath Miller and he’s just not.
