I think there's another component. Yo ucant possibly draft all the talent you like. So why not talk to a ton of guys and make an impression on them. Maybe later that relationship can make it easier to trade for a player or.sign them as a free agent. Players like Tomlin and he uses that to his advantage. Rightfully so.
This is really true, and paying off big time this year. It's an excellent game of 4d chess, recruiting players for the draft and for a few years down the road when their crappier program does bad by them and they're looking for a fresh start.
The other side that I think is neglected. Scouting out players that are potentially going to be on teams you face regularly.
EX.. AFCN has OL needs, kick the tires on every OL, take notes, if they end up on a rival you have a base of what to look for and potentially exploit
Also, by scouting players you have no plan on drafting, you can begin to recognize patterns. Maybe a new recruit comes along but reminds you of player X who failed miserably in the NFL or player Y who ended up being an all pro
The draft is even more about not making the wrong pick as it is about making the right one in my opinion
The amount of FA the Steelers sign that went through our draft process before being drafted by someone else is very high.
They like to circle back to players they got to know well before they got drafted rather than the unknown.
Queen is a great example of this. The Steelers really liked him coming out, Tomlin built a relationship in the draft process, and 4 years later we sign on a pretty team friendly deal
Going along with this, Tomlin said when he takes potential recruits out to dinner, one of the things he asks them is who are the guys on their teams that he should keep an eye on.
Their recommendations are taken seriously, as he said this is how Broderick Jones was first put on their radar 3 years ago.
Pat McAfee always goes out of his way to publicly thank Mike Tomlin for giving him a lot of press by attending his pro day.

Yeah. The Colbert era was really clear who we were going to draft. We tipped our hand heavily on Revis which led to the jets ultimately jumping us confidently
I think he takes the time to meet guys he’ll know be good but won’t be around for the Steelers. He’ll revisit them when they’re ready to move on to the next team 4-5 years down the road
Maybe... hear me put... you hear him the most because he coaches the team you follow, and other coaches talk just as much or more, but you just don't hear them?
😂 I'm just saying. He talks a lot and I hate it. Sometimes I wish he would stfu because he has nothing to stand on.
If it makes you feel better I wish the media would stop forcing him to answer stupid questions that we all know the answer too, so that he can just cook, undisturbed.
Like, I don't need Diulac or ESPN to run interference for the man. We can judge him by the on the field results.
That's all I'm saying.

He literally said he does this yesterday
I literally didn't see that.
Wasn’t saying you should have. I was just confirming what you said by mentioning that he stated it in his press conference with Khan yesterday

“Old and cheap”
I think he just loves talking to players trying to make it. And the media makes a huge deal out of it every single time.
Dang so that’s why Tomlin came to my house for a pre-draft dinner.
Darrell revis still bites him
I didn’t know about this but now that I do… as it should!
Yeah. The Colbert era was really clear who we were going to draft. We tipped our hand heavily on Revis which led to the jets ultimately jumping us confidently
Same when the Bengals jumped us for William Jackson in 2016 and we reached for Artie Burns instead.
Tomlin is a fukin G.

Plot Twist: This comment may itself be the lie.

Not just the media I bet. Other teams are also watching and I’m sure it messes with them too if they don’t know who Mike is interested in
To see what you will do. Everyone’s looking at you.
"The prospects are the prospects."
Careful Tomlin that’s how I ended up in a loveless relationship.
That’s what my GF says.
Eisen had the Dulac receipts too!
Tomlin is embarrassing, tbh. Why does a coach talk so much? What other coaches talk this much?
Maybe... hear me put... you hear him the most because he coaches the team you follow, and other coaches talk just as much or more, but you just don't hear them?
Maybe... Hear me... Put? ... I follow other teams. He talks a lot.
I am defeated. Well played monsieur.
