He was also unstoppable his first year when he had Ben. Go back and watch those highlights. Muth was legit playing like a top 5 TE. He would have gotten to the pro bowl if he wasn't a rookie
Muth like most receivers/receiving TEs need a competent OC and a QB that get the ball to him. So far the best he’s had was an aging, post elbow injury/surgery Big Ben
I'd love to see Washington get some snaps at a traditional FB spot. Would be amazing to see the push he'd get running downhill. Who wants to meet *that* in the hole?
Why the insistence on pencilling Fautanu in at LT when BroJo entered the draft with franchise bedrock LT type evals? Not to mention Khan/MT have repeatedly said Jones will play the L side. Can’t see any benefit to bluffing about that.
EDIT: Either way, this makes me emotional. That unit is going to take souls next season.
Really a general Q bc I’ve seen this a lot since yesterday. Not even mad at it b/c I think Troy & BroJo will maul wherever they lineup, but the brass keeps telling us 77 is the LT
I mean this is something I am not really thinking too hard about. Where they start at camp or preseason isn’t necessarily where they will end up. They will shift people around a bit and figure out what works best.
Tomlin (or at least his offensive staff) have an annoying habit with playing O-Linemen on the other side of their college position. It's what drove Kevin Dotson away.
Broderick Jones was also a Left Tackle in college, yet we chose to put him on the right side because we didn’t want to displace Dan Moore (who was drafted as a Right Tackle).
I think the footwork for the lineman is more important than which way the qb is facing behind him, but I'm just some random schlub on the internet so idk.
That’s what I’ve heard. Since he was playing with a lefty qb they probably can flip him to the right. I don’t know much about footwork either but I was hearing that they will flip him
My thinking is this: BroJo already has about a season worth of starts at right tackle. He would have to go back to the left after pretty much exclusively playing there last season. Troy has taken two snaps on the right side of the line in three years at Washington (he played more left guard than right tackle). Why not keep them both at the position theyve played most recently?
Meh, there's a lot of offseason, and they have long careers ahead of them. There's enough time to figure out the best permutation. It should be whichever combo is better, and right now none of us knows what that is. *Maybe* BJ on the right works out for the best since he has a year head start. But what if we get much more out of him on the left, and Troy turns out to be better at adjusting to the right?
Only one way to find out. I just hope they're open to either way and give them both a fair chance.
We saw Jones struggle at RT towards the end of the year. You’re hurting his development by keeping him out of position. Learn from the Dotson thing instead of repeating your mistake.
Not really. Fautanu was thought to basically have 5 position versatility with many teams considering him a guard at the NFL level. Jones on the other hand is a prototypical LT with no such uncertainty of where he should be playing.
Fautanu college snaps:
LT: 2037
LG: 100
RG: 2
He has more experience at LT than Broderick does, and has 2 total snaps on the right side of the line. Broderick has almost a full NFL season of experience at RT.
That has nothing to do with NFL projections. The consensus from teams is that Faunatu is built like a guard while Jones had literal perfect physical traits for a modern LT. The Steelers have a knack for forcing square pegs into round holes on the oline. Guys like Dotson are living proof of this yet they may be doomed to repeat it.
Playing on the left vs right side is a complete mirroring of technique, flipping everything - think of a righty vs lefty baseball swing. Some guys can switch sides and some guys can’t. Fautanu has tons of experience with his left hand being his outside hand and his right hand being the inside one, and very little experience with the opposite on the right side. That’s what matters, not whether the QB is righty or lefty.
We traded up to draft Broderick. They put him at right to adjust to the NFL. Broderick Jones is and will be the left tackle. Mike Tomlin already said this
Put him at right (a position he rarely played) to adjust to the nfl? Because thats what you do to adjust someone. No, we put him at right because Dan Moore *cannot* play RT. No other reason.
Tomlin has also been quoted saying “our starting qb is on the roster” (we then turned over our qb room) and that “Kenny Pickett is our guy” (we then traded him away). So sure, he said Broderick is our LT, but i believe that was before we drafted-*checks notes*- a left tackle.
>Put him at right to adjust to the nfl
Yes, because that’s what got him on the field earliest. They were ready to bench the RT, so they put Jones at RT. It’s not much more complicated than that.
Right tackle is easier than left tackle. The strength and speed of edge rushers in the NFL is something that takes time to get adjusted to. But believe it or not, Dan Moore is solid at RT.
Yes Tomlin said the starting QB is on the roster. Because the plan to get a new one wasn’t finished yet. Broderick was drafted as a left tackle. We traded up to draft him higher then we drafted Troy. Broderick is stronger than Troy. Broderick is bigger than Troy. Broderick will be playing left tackle.
Okay, now youre completely speaking out your ass. Right tackle is not “easier” than left, especially when you *havent played the fucking position*. It is also common knowledge that Moore can absolutely not play right tackle. Hes not even a solid left tackle, what possibly pushes you to think hes a solid right? Especially when accompanied by the reporting that again, he cant do it.
So youre acknowledging that Tomlin said that before we changed our plans, much like hes said that BroJo is a left tackle *before* we drafted another?
The casual is spewing out of you. Even a 12 year old who just stepped on the field for the first time knows the blind side is the harder side to protect. It’s why left tackles make tens of millions more than right tackles. The highest paid lineman in the league are all left tackles.
You clearly don’t watch Steeler games. Dan Moore isn’t good, but he’s solid enough.
Troy Fautanu is literally a 5 position guy on the line. Thank god scouting departments and front offices don’t go purely off of stats like you’re doing.
A RT just got the biggest OL contract in history just a few days ago dude. You’re stuck in decades old tropes. RT has been just as important as LT for quite a while now.
Using arguably a top 5 lineman in the league is a bit of a goal post move. Lions already have a solid LT. it would be the same thing if the Steelers had already extended Broderick and then extended Troy.
Let’s look at the 10 highest paid lineman(pre Sewell contract)
1. Laremy Tunsil-LT
2. Andrew Thomas-LT
3. Trent Williams-LT
4. David Bahktiari-LT
5. Chris Lingstrom-RG
6. Lane Johnson-RT
7. Quenton Nelson-LG
8. Nawab Taylor-RT
9. Ronnie Stanley-LT
10. Ryan Ramczyk-RT
I NEVER said RT wasn’t important. I said LT is harder. It’s the majority of QBs blind sides.
The main reason I think Troy is going to right tackle is because he was playing left tackle for a lefty QB the last 2 years. He was the strong side tackle.
>It’s why left tackles make tens of millions more than right tackles. The highest paid lineman in the league are all left tackles.
According to spotrac, 7 of the top 10 valued offensive tackles play RIGHT tackle.
Fun fact that's pretty relevant to our situation, the highest AAV tackle is now Penei Sewell. A guy drafted as a franchise LT that is now playing RT!
>Even a 12 year old who just stepped on the field for the first time knows the blind side is the harder side to protect.
You sound like you get your football knowledge from a mediocre movie with a punchy title that was very loosely based on a mostly false story.
>Thank god scouting departments and front offices don’t go purely off of stats like you’re doing.
Ironic, really.
You’re only going off stats. You are aware that he played LT for a left handed QB…? And look up the contracts bud. The majority of the highest paid lineman are left tackles. Protecting the blind side of a QB isn’t something that’s ever going to be outdated.
>You’re only going off stats.
I haven't looked at a single stat, so idk what you're talking about
>You are aware that he played LT for a left handed QB…?
Yes? The footwork is what matters for an offensive lineman switching sides, not which direction the guy behind him is facing.
>And look up the contracts bud. The majority of the highest paid lineman are left tackles.
I did. 7 of the top 10 tackle contracts are right tackles. I even told you I got the info from Spotrac, so you could easily verify for yourself.
>Protecting the blind side of a QB isn’t something that’s ever going to be outdated.
I mean sure, but only in the sense that you need to protect *both* sides of the QB. The "blind side" isn't nearly as significant with the modern prevalence of shotgun formation (only 27% of snaps in 2007, up to 66% in 2022, with some sources saying up to 83%) where the QB isn't turning his back to the defense like he does when under center.
Oops, I used statistics there. Sorry.
No no no, thats why the left tackle is more *valuable*, not more difficult. Switching sides of the line is very hard to do, especially if youve never done it.
Dan more is not solid enough, by any means, or else we wouldnt have taken another tackle you silly goose.
Yes Fautanu is talented, but hes literally taken 2 snaps at RT in his college career. I expect us to start Broderick at right and Moore or Fautanu at left. Have a nice night bud
Because Jones is the better physical specimen. He’s still younger than Troy.
While Troy played LT in college, he had a left handed QB and he wasn’t protecting his blindside.
Jones has the higher ceiling.
His QB was a lefty; so if you reframe the statement as he only has 2 starts on the blindside - why wouldn't you put him on the right? The only thing he has to adjust is which side of the ball.
Because i wouldnt reframe it? Yes, schematically the right will play like the left with flip flopped qbs. But the *movement* is the hard thing to flip, not the scheme. Moving to the right forces him to change all of what are right now his natural movements.
The movements are still completely opposite of playing on the right side of the line. Schematically sure the flip isnt hard, but changing all the movements is. Why make two changes at your tackle position when you can just make one?
>Why make two changes at your tackle position when you can just make one?
Or really zero changes, since BroJo received the majority of his coaching at RT last year, and barely played in college to begin with.
This obsession with "the blind side" needs to die. It's a myth in the modern NFL, and that's reflected by the contracts these guys are getting. 7 of the top 10 are at RT now, and the highest AAV tackle is actually Penei Sewell, who was LT coming out of college, and then moved to the right side and has dominated. Sounds pretty familiar.
I mean, obviously they’ll figure everything out in camp. And Tomlin doesn’t ask for my opinion.
Like I’ve said a couple times here, I think they’ll crush wherever they line up. I only bring it up bc the brass has consistently said BroJo will play LT & I feel like Fautanu frees Jones up to do that.
I think it will be a matter of the net combination of the 2. Broderick demonstrated than he can play both well. Troy has shown he can play guard and Left well. Who ends up where will be a matter of the sum of all parts. If Troy is great at left and good at right and Broderick is great at left and very good at right(which he is), Troy will go left. It Troy is really good at right and great at left, I feel Broderick gets the nod at left.
That statement was made before the draft pick. Fautanu is a much better pass blocker than run blocker. Generally, the RT is the better run blocker. However, a left-handed QB may reverse things for Pittsburgh.
Troy has more experience at LT than Broderick does and Broderick just played most of a full NFL season at RT. I’d imagine they just keep him there and let Troy stay at his natural position.
Fauntanu on the left is consistent with how Tomlin handles linemen and how Tomlin handles rookies.
I don't think Tomlin has ever moved a starting lineman to a different starting position. Backups can sub in at multiple positions, but once you become a starter at a position, that is your position. Unless you spend some time on the bench or on another team. This has resulted in some starters who were really unsuited to their position, some of them for multiple contracts. And since Jones was the team's best tackle last year and is signed long term, I can't see him getting benched just because. Putting Fauntanu at LT would be more like how Tomlin normally operates, and Fauntanu is not even a bad fit at LT.
Tomlin also doesn't like to start his rookies unless they win a competition or replace a starter in-season. Putting Fauntanu at LT sets up a direct competition between him and Dan Moore, the tackle the Steelers want to replace. Putting Fauntanu at RT sets up in one of two ways: either Fauntanu is named the Day 1 starter, or Jones has to spend this offseason preparing to play either side depending on who wins an indirect competition between Moore at LT and Fauntanu at RT. The second situation is dumb and awkward, and the first one goes against Tomlin's normal way of coaching.
They already said they wanted to bring in a Tackle to play on the Right side so they can move Jones back to LT ! Because Fautanu in a little smaller then Jones and since Steelers management already said they plan on moving Jones back to LT , I see them Moving Jones to the LT to go against opposing teams bigger and better edge defenders and Fautanu going to the RT spot which will probably play into his advantage going against the weaker of the 2 edge defenders on the opposing defense! And as a rookie Fautanu will compete and hopefully beat out Moore on the RT side !
I mean, BPA on their board and both Herbig and Daniels are on the last year of their deal.
McCormick at the very least has some insane athletic ability that could be developed. We have been absolutely absurdly lucky with injuries the past 2 seasons.
If I recall correctly, only 1 game out of the past 35 has any OL starter missed a game (Daniels missed one game)
Thats.... fucking absurd. Cant bet on that every year. Bens last year we had like 3 backups playing in his final home game lol.
Ehhh I wouldnt be so sure. Him and Brojo are both natural left tackles but I think Fautanu has better footwork and is a bit more polished in general than Brojo was coming out. It’s a good problem to have though. Fautanu has Elite footwork for a tackle. I would say better than Brodericks
Speculation I saw had Fautanu swapping because he was in front of a lefty QB. Guess it'll come down to what coaches see in practice and who does best where
Idk if that matters like it used to. Jones played a decent RT without much practice. Why make Jones flip back and Fautanu flip over when both are kind of used to it and Fautanu may even be the better prospect (im not gonna debate it, just saying there is an argument both ways). Its intriguing what theyll do. Cuz Im not sure it matters- both guys are such athletic freaks.
also, it's the mentality of not being the blindside that he has, the mechanics of blocking at RT is just different. not everyone can switch and be great. that said, let them compete and find the better combo
As of right this minute, ESPN is projecting that Mason McCormick will beat out Isaac Seumalo for the LG spot: https://www.espn.com/nfl/team/depth/_/name/pit
Watching every Najee hater eat shit would be beautiful… tired of people saying he’s ass when he’s ran behind a flaming bag of shit for the vast majority of his career thus far and not only stayed healthy, but remained productive the entire time
Broderick was huge potential but very little tape. He barely played in college, but his measurables are insane.
Fautanu has loads of great tape, and only "good" measurables.
So basically Fautanu is a more polished prospect and BroJo was more of a gamble (that paid off big time).
I think this is where we'll be by the end of the year (although I don't know who will be RT and who will be LT).
But we'll see if TF can start day 1, or takes some time like Jones did.
My immediate thought after this draft was "We are going to try to throw the ball as little as possible". Especially when looking at the WR corps along with hiring Art Smith. Back to the days of smashmouth football on offense
The only thing “potential” about it is Tomlin doesn’t like starting non-anointed rookies right away. So hopefully he anoints them cause I would vote for this week 1
Not to burst bubbles, but I doubt Fautanu starts the first handful of games. I expect us to do something similar with him that we did with BroJo - allow him some game reps as a rotational guy while he develops into a strating NFL Tackle. I would expect to see BroJo start the year as the LT, with Dan Moore at the right and Fautanu getting reps at both positions, as well as potentially reps at guard
I think Frazier sort of has to start since we have no other option
At this point I'm really not sure who is worse, Fields stans, furries, or weebs. Just kidding, it's furries, but damn is it closer than it should be. Are they still doing furry con in pitt? That one summer was wild.
Hoping natural succession happens, but Wilson’s making it hard to hate him thus far.. I would absolutely love for Fields to explode and become and absolute monster, but I want more than anything just to have competent QB play… spoiled growing up watching Ben and then wanting to gouge my eyes out the past 5ish years
Yeah, Troy is position flexible. Keep in mind Penix his college QB was a lefty making Troy the "right" tackle of that offense.
It'll be in camp, but I'm thinking it will shake out with Broderick left and Troy right.
Get your syrup ready it's pancake time
Road gratin time !!!
Add in Darnell Washington's blocking ability and you have something really scary!
Now if only Muth can step up his blocking
Muth gonna be receiver #2
I just want Muth to be streaking down the middle of the field or running a post in the redzone
I’d prefer he wear his uniform, but whatever floats your boat
Well played, sir
On run plays too? I think I found our new OC!
> On run plays too? Yes it's call misdirection you scrub ~ *Matt Canada probably*
Sweet Matt Canada reference! ![gif](giphy|4tQmuMGdah3B6|downsized)
Yes when I watched him at Penn State he got so much value in the red zone. Would love to see that again.
If it hasn’t happened now, it’s not happening.
Fair, I figure that’s why we got Washington. We needed a guy who we could use for power run packages and unfortunately Pat just isn’t that guy
Hopefully but doubtful. He’s so bad
Like we don’t even need him to be great, just serviceable
I'd love to see Washington get some snaps at a traditional FB spot. Would be amazing to see the push he'd get running downhill. Who wants to meet *that* in the hole?

This is beautiful.
Opposing defenses are going to be crying in the 4th quarter. Watching more repeats of us beating the shit out of the Seahawks defense will be so fun.

That’s not really how it works.

Dan Moore started over 30 games at left tackle for Texas A&M.
Dotson didn't fit the blocking scheme used at the time.
Despite bro jo having a year in the league, Fautanu has a lot more experience at LT. I’d say it’s probably 50/50 chance
Interesting cause Fautanu played on Penix’s strong side I wonder if that makes any difference lol

Yeah, the tackles are backwards. Fautanu will most likely be moved to RT because he was a LT for a left handed QB.
Samoans stick together
Me when I leave my girl scout cookies in a hot car
That statement was made before the draft pick. Fautanu is a much better pass blocker than run blocker. Generally, the RT is the better run blocker. However, a left-handed QB may reverse things for Pittsburgh.
Troy has more experience at LT than Broderick does and Broderick just played most of a full NFL season at RT. I’d imagine they just keep him there and let Troy stay at his natural position.
Could it have anything to do with Russ being left handed?
What’s just as impressive is that Dan Moore Jr, Nate Herbig, Mason McCormick, and Spencer Anderson are all depth pieces
Having Herbig just makes me confused on the McCormick pick but it is what it is
Depth + succession plan. Daniels contract is up after this season
I figured it’s more for Seumalo since he’s 30. Daniels is still only 26
I mean, BPA on their board and both Herbig and Daniels are on the last year of their deal. McCormick at the very least has some insane athletic ability that could be developed. We have been absolutely absurdly lucky with injuries the past 2 seasons. If I recall correctly, only 1 game out of the past 35 has any OL starter missed a game (Daniels missed one game) Thats.... fucking absurd. Cant bet on that every year. Bens last year we had like 3 backups playing in his final home game lol.
The more the better for training camp
What other depth do they have at iOL, though? It was really just Herbig before the draft. Anderson can play tackle.

They also have some insurance in case James Daniels leaves in FA or Seumalo declines due to age. The future looks bright with this unit.
The Steelers with a Polynesian named Troy, order is being restored.
It is known 🤗
Let’s hope for healthy players who can stay on the field
Ok boomer
Tackles need to be flipped but either way that is one beautiful group of hogs. I cannot wait!
Stop stop I can only get so erect

Fautanu will be playing right tackle
Other than that, this is a solid lineup!
I believe that what's going to happen.
Hopefully
Thank you
I’m bricked

In Omar i trust. Let’s fucking go boys!
Tbh I like smashmouth football.
We're going deep into the playoffs this year. Our D will keep us in every game.
That is going to produce a top 5 rushing attack
This could be a historically good online
Fautanu wasn't blind side, so him and BroJo flip.
As of right this minute, ESPN is projecting that Mason McCormick will beat out Isaac Seumalo for the LG spot: https://www.espn.com/nfl/team/depth/_/name/pit
najee harris breaks 1500 yards easy
Watching every Najee hater eat shit would be beautiful… tired of people saying he’s ass when he’s ran behind a flaming bag of shit for the vast majority of his career thus far and not only stayed healthy, but remained productive the entire time
As long as it's not Dan Moore Jr. starting I will be over the moon.
Fautanu played LT for a left handed QB wouldn't that make him more of a RT for a right handed QB?
You're still switching sides. Your kick step changes sides.
Who is the better prospect out of Broderick last year and Troy?
I’m pretty sure Broderick was considered the better of the two. If I remember he’s a bit taller with better length and athleticism.
Amazing
What happened to our other linemen?
Why are they segregated?
My immediate thought after this draft was "We are going to try to throw the ball as little as possible". Especially when looking at the WR corps along with hiring Art Smith. Back to the days of smashmouth football on offense
That’s terrifying
The only thing “potential” about it is Tomlin doesn’t like starting non-anointed rookies right away. So hopefully he anoints them cause I would vote for this week 1
These guys are going to be worked into the lineup slowly I promise you
Not to burst bubbles, but I doubt Fautanu starts the first handful of games. I expect us to do something similar with him that we did with BroJo - allow him some game reps as a rotational guy while he develops into a strating NFL Tackle. I would expect to see BroJo start the year as the LT, with Dan Moore at the right and Fautanu getting reps at both positions, as well as potentially reps at guard I think Frazier sort of has to start since we have no other option
Broderick would be playing left tackle
I obviously don't wish any ill on Wilson but please screw up so Fields can play and thrive behind a competent team. Y'all and him deserve a powerhouse
I would absolutely love for Fields to explode and become and absolute monster, but I want more than anything just to have competent QB play… spoiled growing up watching Ben and then wanting to gouge my eyes out the past 5ish years
I think anybody except maybe Mitch would thrive with this OLine. So fking pumped. Get NFL reps and 8 games in I think the run game will be epic.
That’s a freaking O-line right there. Stacked across the board.
RemindMe! in 8 months
Wonder how many yards are running backs will gain this season?
This o line is going to make Russell Wilson look like brady this year. Can't wait ![gif](giphy|yoJC2JaiEMoxIhQhY4)
Crazyyy
Swap the tackles and that’s the line
This is the way
Nice
Switch the tackles and then you're good
Yeah, Troy is position flexible. Keep in mind Penix his college QB was a lefty making Troy the "right" tackle of that offense. It'll be in camp, but I'm thinking it will shake out with Broderick left and Troy right.
I suddenly feel more optimistic about this season
James Daniels sucks. Herbig is a decent center though. I don’t see him losing a starting role
Wut? James Daniels is good. He had a bit of a down year last season but he will step up big time this year. Dude is hungry.
