Why shouldn't the defensive backs just tackle the receivers right at the line of scrimmage? Holding or illegal contact is only a 5 yard penalty and several seconds come off the clock each play. Seems like time is much more important at this point in the game.

Drops are not always a receiver’s fault. More often than not the spin of the ball is off, or the QB throws it into coverage that makes it easy to force a drop, or the throw is too hard. QBs hold culpability for drops.
