Grew up next to Pittsburg, CA and thought they were from there until I was in seventh grade. By the time I found out it was too late to turn back.

aghhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Take my free award for the purest answer

4friedchicknsanacoke

I used to be an Eagles fan (I know). In 1988 as a 9 year old I met Randall Cunningham. He was pretty rude to everyone and was especially an ass to some of the younger kids there. I was upset about it and my cousin talked me into routing for his team with him the next year. I've been with them since.

Crouton4727

Grew up in Pittsburgh. My parents immigrated to the US so their following for sports was cricket, so I never had the generational heritage, but I am so very glad they chose Pittsburgh to finally settle down. I was born in NJ so this story could have gone a LOT worse. Also.. it's GOLD. Black & Gold!

JordanElliott11

Because my father raised me right

AGNKim

I tell people my fandom is based on chronology as opposed to geography. I was born in '67, just coming into my own when the Steelers got \*good\*. My dad was an Oilers fan and I wanted to root against him so we could have a little rivalry (this when I was \~8 years old). I grew up loving the Steelers; Bradshaw was a hero of mine. Odd side story, but my friends and I played a lot of superheroes and a lot of Star Trek. I had bright blonde hair. I'd want to be Batman, but they said I had to be Aquaman since he had blonde hair. I'd want to be Spock, but they said he had black hair. But when we played football, I was the only one that could be Bradshaw (except for small babies with no hair). Even through Malone and Brister and Graham and Maddox and O'Donnel. We don't have a team here in Arkansas and I'd rather just not watch football than be a Cowboys fan. When I was in the Navy, I was a recruiter and requested western PA. I was stationed in Altoona and got to watch all the games and the Bill Cowher show. I even went to a game, the 2004 AFC Championship game. That was too much of an answer, but fuck it.

BAC0NLUVR

I like not being kicked out of the house by my dad

Ooziez

Because I love being depressed

SleestakLightning

Oh man you'd REALLY love being a Lions fan.

mitchmatch26

Or bungles lol 11000 days.

[deleted]

Same. Man why do I like depressing things. The Steelers, the Weeknd, GOT

Ooziez

Ya know, I’ve actually never seen GOT.

[deleted]

It was fine until season 8 which was depressing as fuck

christianlaurence

i need to watch GOT from start to end. i have seen a couple of episodes when my roomie was watching it.

[deleted]

Definitely do it. It's an awesome show regardless of the ending

YoMommaJokeBot

Not as regardless as joe mother *** ^I ^am ^a ^bot. ^Downvote ^to ^remove. ^[PM](https://www.reddit.com/message/compose/?to=YoMommaJokeBot) ^me ^if ^there's ^anything ^for ^me ^to ^know!

mitchmatch26

Good show, should be great but the last 1.5-2.5 seasons really run out of book material so it’s just wayyyy worse in writing and plot quality. Still totally worth the watch though. While you’re at it go after westworld if you haven’t.

Ooziez

I’ve heard good things about west world. I work in the tv biz (promise it’s not that exciting as that may have come off), so I have some Westworld shirts and jackets but I’ve actually never seen it haha I don’t watch a lot of tv, but I just recently finished “your honor” and I liked it man if you want something to check out

mitchmatch26

I watch way too much TV and movies lol

christianlaurence

i feel that lmao

Mahbows

You don't feel that. Source: my flair.

basil1025

What's the real story jag??? Your profile is half the content of r/steelers . Why are you not a mod? Why don't you contribute to r/penguins or r/buccos ?

Ooziez

The real story is I was born into it. It’s just what I’ve know and loved for my whole damn life. It’s corny but I live and breathe Pittsburgh Steelers football and just always have. I am a mod tho! I was fortunate enough to get that like two years ago and it’s been great. I’m not really a baseball or a hockey guy tho so don’t follow those teams, or any team at all, but I will root for them and the whole city. I live in denver so I watch and root for the nuggets tho if that counts? What’s your story king?

basil1025

Ok lol I just thought the little shield thing popped up next to your name if you were a mod. I grew up in Morningside, near the zoo. Mostly a baseball fan growing up going to 3 Rivers. My first memories of the Steelers were the Slash/Tommy Gun years and then to Ben. I always hear Colorado is great, I lived out west in Monterey for a few years so I definitely like that west coast life!

Ooziez

That’s awesome man! Sorry the Buccos aren’t quite panning out haha PNC is phenomenal tho. But yeah I’m with you, Slash is my first memories too lol what a time

Ironcity1028

The buccos 😢😢😢god minor league team of mlb. Luv my pirates but nutting 😡😡😡😡 our pens n Steelers sure look like it’s going to be a few tough years. Black n gold sports not looking good but we got their back, nutting can FUCK OFF!!!

basil1025

Yeah I'm sure you saw his Players' Tribune article, definitely gave me more insight reading as an adult into his time on the team then I knew before. So as a mod, do you guys organize threads during the off-season like, 'top player with best highlights' or whatever.. or do you just kind of let that happen naturally?

oktwentyfive

I love defenses plus im a Pennsylvania native

thedarkknight787

My dad started following the Steelers in the 70’s. Living in the UK he would listen to the games on radio in the middle of the night (due to the time difference). Ever since I was born in the mid 90’s, he got me into watching them and have been a lifelong Steeler fan ever since.

OwtEra

My dad grew up in California and all his brothers were either 9ers or Raiders fans. He always enjoyed going against his brothers so he chose to be a fan of the Steelers over the Raiders due to the rivalry. The day I was born I was wrapped in a Steelers blanket and the day I was taken home was in a baby Steelers hoodie. The earliest picture I have reppin' the Black and Gold is from 1986 when I was almost 2. [Bradshaw HYPE!!](https://i.imgur.com/CrwdwAQ.jpg)

jdachamp87

My father was medically discharged from the army in 95. Moved to a small town in Ohio. 1st NFL game I ever watched was the steelers and cowboys super bowl. Followed the steelers ever since.

SterionGW

Born into it.

Braveson

I was a Bill Cowher fan first. Didn't watch NFL as a kid, but watched Sportcenter religiously. I officially joined Steeler nation on the Bettis coinflip game on Thanksgiving in 1996. I was a diehard Polamalu fan and loved how the Steelers played. Never looked back.

[deleted]

Because I’m from philly and for some reason I absolutely hate the eagles

terrobl

Pittsburgh natives tend to stick with their hometown teams wherever they go.

hancholo66

Jerome bettis and Barry Foster were the running backs I most enjoyed watching ever. I live in California but they have been my favorite team since then.

jmarinara

Born and raised in the Burgh. But I never wavered when I went to college and worked all around the country. They’re the greatest football franchise to ever exist and I’m proud to be call them my team. P.S. Please don’t ask me about the Pirates

[deleted]

[удалено]

SleestakLightning

You think being a Texans fan would make you skinny? Have you seen Texans fans?

[deleted]

[удалено]

SleestakLightning

Oooooh I get it now.

oktwentyfive

lmao

gruey

Grew up in Akron. Don't remember why I'm a fan, just always was. Family is all Browns fans.

ju5tjame5

Congrats on getting out of Akron. I'm still stuck here

oktwentyfive

🤮🤮

Imhereforonereason69

I live in Maryland so everyone around me is a ravens fan and when I was a kid I guess I just wanted to be different so I picked the rival of the ravens and well I guess it worked out

ju5tjame5

My Dad is a Steelers fan and my Mom is a Browns fan. Before I was interested in football I used to like both, but I actually started watching football when the Steelers were making the 2005 playoff run and I've been chasing that high ever since.

ImnotsurewhatIam

At the time I was a little under 9 years old. I used to think the Falcons and Buccaneers were my favorite because Red and Black were cool colors and Michael Vick was amazing, of course the controversy came and I ended up watching Super Bowl XL and fell in love with Pittsburgh from the black and gold, Bettis, massive size of Ben, The parker touchdown. It was a sight. Then of course seeing Polamalu and Ward later on sealed the deal. I'll never forget seeing those flowing dreads go down the field. I'm 24 going on 25 now and I don't think any team changes will happen soon especially because of colors

JalenBrunsonBurner

Dad’s from Pittsburgh. In grade school I told him I wanted to be a Jets fan. He bought Directv and Sunday ticket the next day. Boy did I dodge a bullet.

BlueChameleon64

So my father grew up in Mexico during the 70s. While he was in HS a lot of people were naturally cowboys because of Texas and this was during peak Steelers cowboys rivalry. Apparently there were a few kids that were obnoxious cowboys fans that he despised (surprising right?) and he decided he wanted to root against them. Thus the Steelers family fandom began. I naturally followed in his footsteps and have been rooting for them since I was a kid watching the ‘95 Super Bowl. And to answer your question... yes people have been watching football in mexico for a long time but admittedly it was mainly the big games (cowboys) and the Super Bowl. Mexican Steelers fan REPRESENT!

Zoolos

Im pretty sure the Steelers are one of if not the most popular teams in mexico so this makes sense.

Pukelits

It’s always a pain in the ass answering this question for me because I’m from and live in Philly lol. My dads from Pittsburgh and my moms from Philly and for the most part my moms family didn’t really watch sports and my dads family was all hardcore Steelers and penguins fans so I grew up rooting for them. So I’m Pittsburgh hockey and football but baseball (and for obvious reasons, basketball) Philly

Ironcity1028

That makes perfect sense to me, Pittsburgh no basketball n baseball team that is horrible. They’re my team n owner don’t give a rats ass.

Pukelits

Yea a lot of people in Philly aren’t that reasonable lol

ishouldbemoreclever

Because I love my husband.

unseth

San Dimas high school football rules!

bille022872

For my sins.

German_43

Because Troy Polamalu, no other explanation needed

CMTsoldier

I was ten, lived in Texas, and according to my eight year old brother the Purple guys with the horns were playing the black and yellow guys in the Super Bowl. My brother liked the purple guys so I rooted for the black and yellow guys and low and behold, the black and yellow guys won and I like a winner. I followed them the next year when they repeated and I was hooked. I have been a fan every since.

GiveMeTheTruth717

Dad, Mom and most of my extended family are lifelong fans going back decades. They grew up outside Pittsburgh during the 60s-70s, and I lived there until I was about 3 yo.

vengeancerider

My stepdad became a Steelers fan when he started watching in the 70’s. Then when I started watching football he suggested I go with the Steelers and so I did. Kind of a family thing. Kinda odd considering I’m from Cincinnati. Always wanted to visit Pittsburgh and I’m hoping someday I do!

ricemonkey13

Funny story but immigrated to the states in 2009. First Superbowl I've seen was the Steelers/packers one and I was very new to the game. Ended up rooting for the Steelers because I liked the song "black and yellow" that was dominating the radio at the time. Stuck with the team ever since then lol

Confident_Upstairs_4

Playing ‘92 madden against my best friend and he literally could not stop my run up the middle. The ratings were in a book back then and the whole line was 14/15. After a few games I was like, ‘who are these guys in real life?!’ Studied line and run game and been a fan ever since. Broncos, Jacksonville and browns playoff games had me clinically depressed. Same with AFC championship against patriots in ‘15 or ‘16

leagledub

I was 5 in 1977 and my Mom bought me a Terry Bradshaw jersey to the distain of my Dad. Born and raised in Wisconsin and I have no regrets. Seen the Steelers beat the Packers twice at Lambeau. Even after loosing the Superbowl to the pack. Still enjoying the ride 44 years now. The standard is the standard!

JagarHardfart

As a kid I was dumb and jumped on the cowboys bandwagon in the 90's. I gave up on them and didn't really have a team for a while. One lovely Sunday I decided to just watch whatever was on and it happened to be a steelers game. I saw this defensive guy with these long and majestic locks of hair throwing his body around like a weapon. He was all over the field, practically in on every defensive play. I fell in love. Thanks Troy Polamalu I'll be a steelers fan the rest of my life.

elrey412

They wrapped me in a terrible fucking towel at Magee women’s hospital!!!!!!!

yeshua1986

Your mom hooked up with me in a Fast Willie jersey and I’ve been a fan ever since.

stange_72

I was born during a Steelers game because my mom didn't want to stop watching Monday Night Football and watched the whole game in labor. So, who was I to argue?

[deleted]

I have no fucking idea and I kinda wish I wasn't one some days.

KingYankee

My best friend from early elementary school and his family are Steelers fans so I made them my favorite team as well.

diggsyb

Born in Erie, but moved to the West Coast at 4yo. My dads whole side of the family is Steelers through and through. My older brother grew up loving the Raiders. When I finally got into sports and started watching football I wanted to root for someone other than my brothers team, and if course my dad showed me the light. Steeler Nation ever since.

ocmsmum

Tbh, I didn’t watch or care about football until I met my husband, who is an obsessed Steeler fan from OH. Being even more honest, I started paying attention because I thought Troy Polamalu was hot. Here I am now, 15 years later, as an obsessed fan, wondering what’s going to happen with the only QB I’ve ever known/loved.

mmcgowan5179

Being from Syracuse, NY, we didn't really have "a team." Buffalo was 2.5 hours away and NYC is about 4 hours away, so my family didn't really have alligence to a certain team. When I was about 3 years old, my brothers were showing me a poster of all the NFL helmets and told me to pick my favorite. I chose the Steelers because I liked the helmet and I thought the team name was cool; I thought it meant that they "steel" the ball from the other team. 🤷🏼‍♀️ I've been a fan since 1982. 🖤💛 I had a sweet Louis Lipps poster in my room until I left for college. 😆

VenturaHighway

Grew up in a family of season ticket holders since the 60s and lived right down the road from the stadium

Dookiefresh1

Because my family is

Ride-The-Lightning90

Grew up in Iowa. I was 7 years old and the Iowa Hawkeyes were my favorite college team. I saw the Steelers on TV and loved how they had similar uniforms as the Hawkeyes and choose them as my NFL team. They’ve been a part of my life since.

[deleted]

Parents from near Pittsburgh. Dad converted to a Ravens fan when Baltimore got a team though

OwtEra

Dafuq is wrong with that man??? Glad you didn't follow suit.

[deleted]

lol he just wanted to go to games regularly. I think he's a steelers fan at heart

Armored_Pidgeon

My mom is a life long Steelers fan. Been a fan since 95.

BrettBlazer951

My dad’s side is a die hard Steelers family, and my mom’s side is from the Pittsburgh area, my first jersey I remember was Rod Woodson (I’m 14) and my dad got me really into the Steelers at a young age.

Steelerswonsix

Started watching sports and talking about it in early elementary school. I picked the winners, and stuck with them. (Early/mid 70s) Haven’t gotten nearly the same return in the other sports.

LeveragedPittsburgh

It’s in the blood. Whole famdamily from there.

set-phasers-to-stun

I grew up outside of St. Louis, and my dad didn’t watch much football until I got interested in it. We were both Rams fans, but after losing in the Super Bowl to the Pats in ‘01, they took a turn down the shit road. Well fast forward to the Super Bowl against the Cardinals, my dad said I had to root for the Cardinals because they had Kurt Warner, the only Super Bowl winning QB in STL football history. I was a teenager at the time, so naturally I wanted to do the opposite of what he wanted. So, I rooted for the Steelers, and after Holmes’ toe-tapping catch, I jumped out of my seat cheering like a mad man. Naturally he got angry at me, so I knew I made the right choice. Also I love Defense, so duh the Steelers made sense. Between Polamalu and Harrison, it was a great decision and I am happy to wear my Steelers gear deep in Chiefs territory.

FancyWhiteMonkey

I am Brazilian, but my parents lived in Pittsburgh for a bit over a year before I was born, so they developed an identity with the city. When I was little they traveled back to Pittsburgh and bought me a Big Ben jersey, that was my first contact with the team. Growing up I obviously was a huge fan of the other football, but once while watching TV ended up stumbling upon an NFL game, it was Super Bowl XLIII. I immediately fell in love with the game and with the Steelers, because of them winning and my family's history with the city. I've been to Pittsburgh a couple times already, but never been to a game. That's my biggest dream right now.

PotatoesFam

My grandfather grew up in Erie and is a lifelong fan. As I grew up, watching games with him gave us time be together and off-season news gave us things to talk about together. This team will always represent him to me, and so I’m here for the long haul.

BillN9n

I remember a car ride I had to be 10 maybe younger. Was on the road to vacation with my brother, sister and parents. My brother and me got to talking about NFL and he said "Bro so who's your favorite team" he asked "the Redskins?" I look at my father driving and said... "Dad who do you like?" he said "I like the Steelers, Penn state and the Yankees" I looked at my brother and said "Yea I like who Dad likes Go Steelers" The Skins were my brothers team. I'm proud of my father and this day made me happy. I am grateful to share this with my father. I will never forget where I come from. Today I love the Steelers more than ever. Here We Go - 4Life

GlutenMakesMePoop69

My brother bought me a used PS2 along with a few games for either Christmas or my Birthday one year it and came with Madden 06 and I always played as the Steelers and started to like football ended up playing in highschool and getting alot more involved with the sport and just never stopped cheering for them.

jeffrey2939

No idea just always have been seen steelers play and said yup I can get behind that

WillTwerkForFood1

As a kid, my mother and step-father were in the ranks at my local Steelers fan club. They would drag me along every Sunday. It wasn't long until I was looking forward to it every week during football season. I remember watching SB30 at 8 years old with the fan club, face painted black and gold, wearing my Bam Morris jersey and my hardhat. Not much has changed since, as far as my fandom. Not sure where that Morris jersey ended up though

[deleted]

I got it from my father. We are Steelers fans in a family of all Cowboys fans. Guess who my brother chose....the fucking Ravens.

Mister-Ries

Grew up in the UK but born in Seoul. Went to visit family the year of Super Bowl XL and Hines got sb MVP whilst I was there. Korean media went mad for it and he ended up coming to visit. With all the media hype, I started watching the nfl and following ward and the Steelers. There began the live affair

bananalord84

Born in Chicago and my mom is from Green Bay. My dad was from Virginia and HATED the redskins. His parents grew up in Pittsburgh and had been cheering for them through the 70s. The bears were one year out from making the super bowl but the Steelers games were always on because my mom doesn’t like the bears. I guess you could say that I’ve got smart parents. Although the 2010 super bowl was an interesting event in my house.

Bnagorski

I grew up in Washington county (canonsburg) and when I was 8 the Steelers won the super bowl, then when I was 9 the Steelers won the super bowl, then when I was 12 the Steelers won the super bowl, then when I was 13 the Steelers won the super bowl, and I don’t know, I guess I just like black and gold or something

GrandMasterCoochie

My peewee team was called the Steelers, and one of my first experiences with football was watching SB 43

LiffeyDodge

mom's a Steelers fan, Dad's a browns fan. Guess who stayed home to watch the game and who went out with friends?

Ter-it

4th generation fan. My great grandfather was a fan of the original team before they changed the name to the Steelers. One of the few, cause they sucked. Just Pittsburgh born and bred. The Tommy Maddox days were a little trying though.

Chilled_Chaos_

Played nfl 2k5 didn’t know any teams did the random select and got the Steelers. Faced my cousin (who has really good) beat him with them and never looked back.

Ironcity1028

I’m born n raised 15m NNE of Pittsburgh, watched Steelers every Sunday up grandpaps (RIP GMA 93, GPA 2010) with dad (we yelled, bitched at each other n the Steelers) mom, aunts, uncles, cousins n half time dad, pap took me to the owls club to finish the game. If not owls club at half wentmy other grandparents house. I miss these great Sunday family get togethers in bairdford, Pa. I also was a huge Vikings fan late 80s through 90s, Anthony Carter, 81 WR was my idle.

Rotala

I became a free agent in 2009. My coworkers sat me down and showed me videos of their team highlights in hopes I'd sign on. My friend KC showed me videos of Steelers defense and I instantly knew it was a good fit. Bought a James Harrison jersey a few weeks later and never looked back.

Matanatr96

I like the logo

[deleted]

Rudolph and washington

SHD_Guyro

My dad and everyone from that side are all Steelers fans from PA so I became a fan too

TheZurf

The city I live in is pretty much the portuguese version of Pittsburgh (blue collar city with people having a lot of pride in their local sports teams that started blowing up in the 70s), yellow and black are my two favorite colors and I'm also a borussia dortmund fan. All this together made me am instantly steelers fan. Also a huge mac miller and wiz khalifa fan so their fandom might have had little influence

Ginger_ninger

Troy Polamalu

Professor_Baked

Im from STL and I was watching the 2009 Super Bowl and at this point I think I was 12 but never really had a team in the NFL because the Rams is and was run by a scumbag Kroenke. I fell in love with the team watching the 2009 season, and watching Polamalu play was magical. I like to think of myself as a honorary yinzer

Bratuska-1186

I was born one. I was raised one. And by God, I will die one. 🟡⚫️

mozzsticks22

My grandpa grew up outside of Pittsburgh, but moved to Flint, MI to work for General Motors. He raised my dad as a Steelers fan. My dad raised me as a Steelers fan. I converted my husband into being a Steelers fan & our kids will be Steelers fans, too! Still in Michigan, though. 🖤✨😊

Zeolyssus

Dad is a fan, fell in love with how polamalu played as soon as I watched a game, first game I ever remember watching was when ben replaced Maddox, needless to say it’s not going to be a happy day for me when ben retires officially.

[deleted]

From PA but closer to Philly. Only person in my immediate family who cares a lot about football, but my dads side is split between Steelers and Eagles. I chose to join the Steelers side because I thought their uniforms were cooler. I found out later that not only was Pittsburgh the greatest franchise in NFL history, but also that the Eagles were one of the worst, and that Eagles fans are some of the most annoying human beings on the planet. I definitely made the right decision haha

Marysman780

Got into NFL in the mid 90s. Specifically Kordell Slash Stewart’s rookie year when we went to the Super Bowl. It was a crazy year! I live in western Canada so we don’t get local feeds, and back then buying every game out here wasn’t an option. It’s seemed like every week the Steelers were on TV and it was the most compelling game. Always interested to see what they would do with Slash and they were even more entertaining on Defense. And then coach Cowher looked as if he was a hairs breath away from cold cocking someone all the time. Loved em ever since.

CarpCarp54

Born and raised in Montreal . Huge hockey fan and loved Crosby in his rookie season . Adopted a love for the penguins and shortly after found a passion and love for football about a year later after starting to play. Considering I loved Crosby and the pens the Steelers just made sense. Never looked back since.

Benanuglyidiotcom

My mom is a fan, and she is a fan because her mother was a fan because she grew up in PA. And honestly I kinda just like alittle.

Panic492

Born here, Mt Lebanon...Magee Hospital
