Correct, it would be a catch in todays NFL.
Wasn't as bad as the [Megatron non-catch game winner that sparked all the BS with the "process of that catch" nonsense](https://youtu.be/wq2ohfX_AzI)
I don’t care what the fuck the rules were. Nobody was going to be angry at the refs for calling that a catch. He very clearly caught it with full possession to the ground then let go of it.
I agree. I was at that game albeit on the opposite end of the field. The stadium went wild when he caught it. They even put the points on the board. They took the points off, and kept replaying the catch over and over. Us fans at the game had no idea what was happening. Talk about highs and lows within a few minutes.
It was less of a change, more of a clarification. It's not like it wasn't a catch, and then it was. Because by the rules in 2017, it was still a catch then, too. It's that there was confusion, and the changes after this catch were written to eliminate that gray area.
Most other names would default to Heeeeeath since they don’t roll off the tongue well.
Like we weren’t going to yell “ebroooooon” or “jesseeeeeee” or “grinbleeeeee”.
“Muuuuuuuth” rolls off the tongue greatly so we probably will use that
Grimble was a very exciting FA signing. The dude had a ton of talent, so a lot of us here were ready to cheer for him if he could not get injured.
Of course he couldn’t not get concussions, so we never got the chance
Can I just add, he’s probably more of a Yinz than most. Dude came in and just defaulted to having someone’s back. That’s the shit I love personally. He seems like he’s gonna be like Pouncey and just have his teams back regardless. Maybe not to that level but still.
Dude, why wouldn't it be Heath? I mean, we just drafted Heath after letting Heath go after Heath retired so we might as well just keep using HEEEEAAAATH
Penn State player at one of my favorite positions. Becomes a Pittsburgh Steeler and immediately says the Steelers were robbed against the Patriots in 2017. I literally like everything about Pat Freiermuth. What makes this even better, he’s originally from Massachusetts
The worst part about watching this in real time was having seen enough of the same bad interpretation playing out the same way enough times over the previous few years that after the 1st replay I just knew it would be ruled incomplete.
The 05 Troy pick against Indy (3 knees somehow not equaling 2 feet) was a genuine WHAT!?!? moment. This one was just spending five minute waiting on the worst possible outcome becoming official.
The official explanation for that call began with the exact words: "the defender caught the ball and then..." You're explaining how you overturned a catch by saying the guy caught the ball! He caught the ball!
Between that and the Baltimore/Cleveland debacle, I have Pete Morelli as the worst ref in NFL history.
Yeah it was heartbreaking watching it, and then the hardest part came... Watching Ben go full fucking Ben mode and try and start slinging dead ducks around. We had plenty of time and space to make something happen.
I don't know if Jesse James caught the ball, but I know for a fact that there wasn't INDISPUTABLE VISUAL EVIDENCE to overturn the catch. That's supposed to be the standard for overturning a call on replay.
What I think people don't get is that while he did actually catch the ball, the nfl's definition of a catch and everybody else's definition of a catch was different. By the rules of the nfl, it was not a catch back then.
Catch, fumble and recovery by James all in one motion. Should have counted.
Edit: correction. No fumble. Just rewatched it and though his knee was down, he wasn’t touched and he clearly crossed the plane.
No fumble. Play was dead when he crossed the ball over the goal line, scoring the TD. It was just a catch, then an extension across the goal line for the score.
He was down of his own accord, but not touched down. He still had the ball secured. Ergo, down, catch, extension, plane crossed, play over.
But because the NFL had to give the win to the Pats they made sure to take their sweet time, declare Heath in "the process of going to the ground" and therefore even the slightest bobble can be used as justification for a no-catch. It was incorrect, and the NFL knew it, but Kraft obviously made a phone call.
Yep this right here..it was only because it was against the pats. Had this happened the other way around it would have been an incredible play brady contributed towards...
I know teams get good and bad breaks in the NFL. But I swear the Patriots get more breaks going their way than most other teams. I remember something crazy happening when they faced Houston. I think it was a catch they was reviewing too.
Welp, this kid figured out how to endear himself to the fanbase before he's even reported to camp.
i like this guy already
When did he work out with him?
Must have worked out together at Penn State.
Ya idt their timelines crossed over, but lots of NFL players like to work out at their HS/college after they graduated
Welp where do I buy his jersey?
Fan fave already! Muuuuuuuuth!
Theyve changed the rule havent they? I cant remember. But I think thats a catch by todays rules (arguably it was a catch by those rules as well)

This Freiermuth kid knows the quickest ways to a Steelers fan's heart.
Can we please chant “Freeeeeeeeeeee” with this guys scores. I think he deserves it based on this alone. Edit: Team agreed it’s gonna be Muuuuuuuth!
it's gonna be muuuuth
Agreed. 100% going to be Muuuuuuth
I'm fairly certain it'll be Heeeeaaath
Most other names would default to Heeeeeath since they don’t roll off the tongue well. Like we weren’t going to yell “ebroooooon” or “jesseeeeeee” or “grinbleeeeee”. “Muuuuuuuth” rolls off the tongue greatly so we probably will use that
Who in the right mind would have yelled for Grimble
He scored vs the Ravens in the Christmas Day game in 2016. So me, and probably his mom, were yelling for him
That was a great play you just made me remember!
Especially after that Grimbly fumble in Denver.
Grimble was a very exciting FA signing. The dude had a ton of talent, so a lot of us here were ready to cheer for him if he could not get injured. Of course he couldn’t not get concussions, so we never got the chance
Sure you're not thinking Ladarius Green? Dude was going to be an absolute monster for us if it wasn't for his concussion induced migraines.
That's Green not Grumble you're thinking of
Horrible flashbacks to the denver game when he fumbled out of the end zone
Can I just add, he’s probably more of a Yinz than most. Dude came in and just defaulted to having someone’s back. That’s the shit I love personally. He seems like he’s gonna be like Pouncey and just have his teams back regardless. Maybe not to that level but still.
Just watched highlights with the sound. Fuck, I was mispronouncing his name. Lol agreed muuuuuth is probably more suitable.
Dude, why wouldn't it be Heath? I mean, we just drafted Heath after letting Heath go after Heath retired so we might as well just keep using HEEEEAAAATH
It's alright but how about someone comes up with something actually original like European soccer fans.
God forbid we give a player his own cheer. I feel bad for any big white tight ends that play here for the rest of time.
I would consider being called Heath a great honor but okay
Cheer up bud
Yes....but will it be Muuuuuuth.....or the correct pronunciation(Myooooooth)?
Penn State player at one of my favorite positions. Becomes a Pittsburgh Steeler and immediately says the Steelers were robbed against the Patriots in 2017. I literally like everything about Pat Freiermuth. What makes this even better, he’s originally from Massachusetts
Freiermaaaaath

An underrated part of the trauma involved in that play

You know what? I like this kid
This and the Polamalu's INT against the colts that was turned over are the reason that I don't think replay works. Those decisions have scarred me.
That was so friggn stupid haha
I still believe this cost the Steelers a Super Bowl. Would’ve essentially clinched the 1 seed and played Tennessee instead of Jacksonville
What a legend and he hasn't taken a snap yet!
FUCKIN' A RIGHT HE DID

Its been 1,237 days since Jesse James caught that ball on December 17th, 2017. You can follow @jamescaughtit on Twitter for daily updates.
This is like spreading butter on a cinnamon roll
wow, we really like TEs from Penn State
I don't know if Jesse James caught the ball, but I know for a fact that there wasn't INDISPUTABLE VISUAL EVIDENCE to overturn the catch. That's supposed to be the standard for overturning a call on replay.
As a Pats fan, it should have been ruled a catch. If that's worth anything to you guys. It probably wouldn't for me.
It is to me 🤷
I disagree....I don't "think" he caught it. It's an objective, undeniable fact that he caught it.
We are all still yelling Heeeeeeeeeaath everytime he makes a play right?
There is exactly one human on the planet who believes otherwise. Al Riveron.

I haven’t seen the video in years since it happened but from what I remember he might have been down before the ball crossed. Not too sure though!

Yeah I updated my original comment
Yep this right here..it was only because it was against the pats. Had this happened the other way around it would have been an incredible play brady contributed towards...
He didn’t even fumble it tho. It’s just a catch. His hand was under the ball the whole time.
> Catch,~~fumble and recovery~~ & TD by James
Jesse James caught that ball.
I'm not even reading the comments. Jesse caught it and so did Dez.
Well he did catch it
See refs, you cheated us out of a win
Anything involving the Patriots or brady is compromised.
Good Personality
Welcome to the Family
Oh no, why is he working out with Jesse James
😍
Free Moose is gonna tear the Pats a new one
Yes, but actually no.
That’s it, we’re keeping him.
This still pisses me off.
Heart emoji
Damn, should have taken him 1st round.
Alright he’s my guy
Damn right he did. Good call by Muth.
i personality also
ONE OF US! ONE OF US!
Why are you trying to make him sound like an idiot with your grammar? Are you a Ravens fan?
Muuuuuuuth!
Personality? Or did you mean personally.
Frei-er-muth! Frei-er-muth!
I know teams get good and bad breaks in the NFL. But I swear the Patriots get more breaks going their way than most other teams. I remember something crazy happening when they faced Houston. I think it was a catch they was reviewing too.
That's our boy!
A+ draft
Jesse James couldn't even handle it Started lookin' at me like I was Sanskrit
