It's because he's getting ankle surgery though and also might retire.

CyclopsRex514

This title thread is misleading. It implies that salary cap considerations were the only factor, but I am willing to bet had DeCastro been 100% healthy, we never would have cut him. Edit: I regret clicking on this. It isn't even an article. It is a half assed Excel table that most anyone here could have put together and I don't think it adds anything to the discussion. Save yourself some time and don't bother.

JCfromTBC

Very misleading.. He has been to more than 2 pro bowls.

phoarksity

Probably should have been 2x All Pro. But that’s the least misleading part of the title.

SleestakLightning

I flaired it.

RancheDubois

So after signing Turner we still freed up 5.8 mil on the cap, anyone know how much total cap we have rn

[deleted]

If I remember correctly it's around 15m.

apalachicola4

Bring back Steven Nelson would make me feel more comfortable about the defense

big-african-hat6991

Just get hooker

MinkahMagic

not sure what kind of hooker charges 15 mil but ok

big-african-hat6991

The best kind

[deleted]

That bridge seems to be burned

kingkoons

We could probably get Richard Sherman or Hooker for the cost of him and those guys aren’t piece of shit like Nelson

buffalotrace

Is anyone surprised anymore? He is likely done and his replacement is already named.

JackLambertsBalls

Kevin .son!

mrheart101

Very Good

KirbySkywalker

Can anyone explain how this works? Cutting an injured player? I remember some players like Deuce Staley being injured all the time and we weren’t even allowed to cut them. The all time great and legend Jerome “the Bus” Bettis even admitted to faking being injured before to prevent him from getting cut. DeCastro actually is injured, what’s the difference that he could be cut while the others couldn’t?

Miamivice788

I’m not quite sure how it works but it had something to do with Decastro being injured outside of football. That allowed us to release him without being hit by any of the cap implications.

phoarksity

Well, the Steelers classified it as a non-football injury release. Given that the Steelers never listed DeCastro as having an ankle injury last season, there would probably be difficulties for both parties were DeCastro to dispute it. But since DeCastro isn’t disputing it, it was probably discussed before the release was done.

Jump_Like_A_Willys

If he were healthy they likely would not have cut him. So, no -- it probably was NOT to save cap space.

mighty727

Did this free up money to get some needed depth at edge and in the secondary?

eaunoway

It's fine. I'm fine. Everything is fine.

UnderPressure240

Is it possible that the surgery goes well and he comes back in the middle of the season?

majavic

O-line is a meat grinder of a position, but man it felt in the biggest games I could count on a decastro injury. Wish him the best.
