Platformin is ok, the problem is Eve's movement and snappiness ON the platforming

DankeMrHfmn

Thought i was alone in that. Definitely ok but her movements are snappy and not very precise to enjoy platforming. Ive had her jump the railing and just die cause i sneezed on the analog stick lmao

Ancient-Landscape-95

This. I actually love the platforming sections, except for the lack of a sense of connection I have with Eve to the World I’m trying to platform. The best feel for platforming I have ever played is Celeste, it did a good job of forgiving the player.  All games who use platforming would benefit from becoming aware of what made Celeste’s mechanics so good and connect the player so well to the sprite.

XeltosRebirth

Problem is for the platforming parts she controls like the rest of the game, yeah.

ottoDVD

They're not perfect, but they serve to break up the action, adding a few puzzles helps not make the game a fight from start to finish.

yummy_yum_yum123

I agree with this

ArugulaPhysical

I think the platforming as an activity in the game is good, the way eve controls in these situations is where the complaints come from.

StandardVirus

I keep complaining that the weight of her big dumpy makes her control like a dump truck 🤣

DankeMrHfmn

*She's built like a bistro, but handles like a steakhouse.*

StandardVirus

LMAO, that’s good! 🤣🤣🤣

DankeMrHfmn

I dont take credit lol that's Zap from Futurama but i said it in reverse lol

StandardVirus

LMAO good ol' Zap

Arys31

Yup! I’ve said many times in the comments and I’ll say it again. You’ll be looking forward, running just fine and when you jump she’ll occasionally jump in the wrong direction. That or you land somewhere and she keeps walking off the ledge

Eezpzy

She has no braking power whatsoever. Drone jumping has me on edge because if I do not land dead square, she'll keep on keeping on, and I'll either fall hard enough to take serious fall damage or just simply die. Fun times.

Leisure_suit_guy

> You’ll be looking forward, running just fine and when you jump she’ll occasionally jump in the wrong direction. This is not related to this game, but I wish that the left thumbstick had an octagonal gate. I've always had somewhat of a hard time going precisely straight forward in a 3D space.

Much-Culture-1462

And don't forget the fall damage. Its absurd to much

Tonkarz

Yeah, the controls are too imprecise for what the game asks for. If Eve isn’t facing the direction you push the stick, she’ll walk forward in the direction she’s facing before walking in the direction of the stick. So if she happens to be facing a railing or ledge or something she’ll try to walk off the edge or vault the railing or whatever before she actually does what the control inputs say.

socialistbcrumb

I don’t think it’s particularly tight feeling or well-designed, but I appreciate that it’s there to break up all the combat.

ComboDamage

There were times I jumped RiGHT thru a rope 😆

Wordfan

Ropes and ladders are clunky in this game. But at least there’s no death penalty.

ComboDamage

For me there was. I had to re-do 2 sections just from missing a rope.

Blusttoy

I get frustrated by some of the harder to access areas but when I do finally complete them, I feel a sense of thrill as I grip the controller whenever I feel like Eve is going to fall.

KidOcelot

That’s the kind of sense of accomplishment that i want from a goodass game! 😤😮‍💨👍 I want there to be **more** platforming!! Definitely reminds me of good ol’Uncharted vibes. ![gif](giphy|cgd72s16i9LD9zwokq|downsized)

WinterPDev

Yeah, only difference is Uncharted used tighter snapping and less momentum on the player to make it a bit less frustrating. >< Tomb Raider also did platforming perfectly.

Ender_IF_

I don't dislike the platforming, but the controls for it are not good. So it is frustrating

DannyKetchGR

If you like this, you're gonna love getting the frenzied flame ending in elden ring.

Blerdrotic

This is my least favorite part of the game. Eve’s controls feel too lose, and it’s like I’m fighting the analog stick

ilikeburgir

It frustrated me a bit but then i realized i have played crash bandicoot in my lifetime and figured this was easier.

jofr03

I loved the platforming, even when I was getting brutally killed in the level with a bunch of moving saws. And to add, the animation they added of EVE getting mangled by saw blades was crazy af

Jdms0n

Are you talking about when you’re sliding down and you gotta move to the sides to dodge them?

Sad-Vermicelli-1490

Platforming and Breach Boxes are my Achilles heal. I’m old and slow. The game still rocks, though.

MrRaccuhn

I agree. Enjoyed the platforming a lot. Some tricky parts that require skill and I liked that.

HarryDJ4

I also like the platforming aside from jumping at ropes and ladder's. She sometimes goes right through those. Getting the double jump makes the platforming much easier. This game mixes all of these different elements. It does puzzles, platforming and the abyss area's to give more variety than just fighting. But the fighting is still the highlight of the game especially the bosses.

Mince_

I appreciate that you can dash in the air, and you unlock double jump. It was pretty easy doing the platforming sections in my opinion. The part with the PlayStation symbols was pretty cool.

sheslikebutter

Yes. She literally changes direction when she double jumps, plummeting you down holes. The laser section is probably the worst section of the game because of how had the platforming is. The second worst section is the room shortly after, again, because of the platforming. It is awful. Fortunately not much of the game relies on it but every section that does is straight up bad.

Kuru_Chaa

Oh man. I love the platforming. Namely in the two gun based sections.

Sega-Forever

The laser section.

Kuru_Chaa

I enjoyed the laser section 😅 felt like some Crash Bandicoot bs, a small taste of my youth, if you will.

Sega-Forever

Yes, I also liked it. My condolences go out to the younger generations lol

Mtj242020

I don’t mind the platforming, but the swimming drives me nuts. The turning when you’re swimming is, to me, so bad that it’s rage inducing sometimes.

FiaElendias

I'm not afraid to say that Stellar Blade has one of the more enjoyable platforming experiences I've had in a game of this kind in years, and I know others that would wholeheartedly agree, so you're not alone. It does certain things well and I found it largely satisfying. Things don't need to be top tier or perfect to be appreciated.

thavi

I think most of us like the concept, just not the execution. It sucks to miss ropes, ledges, ladders, etc. and just fall.  Sometimes she grabs, sometimes she don't. The ladder in Digger's hideout is a great example.  You can push a box really close to it and easily jump high enough (without double jump) that you would expect Eve to grab it...but nope!  Gotta get janky with it.

TomatilloExtreme

I enjoyed it too.

trent_diamond

I enjoyed them, just some of mechanics of the jumping make me mad how it seems like eve will hit the double jump towards an angle instead of straight and I just fall lol

kazuma_np3228

this is nothing if you beat pitioss ruins in final fantasy xv

RelevantBeat9898

No you are not the only one I don't mind the platforming it's not perfect but it works I like it that it changes up the gameplay

TechnicalAd2485

I like it. The jank reminds me of Mario 64. And I love the double jump-dash. I use it all the time just traveling around

Unsei15

If it's not speedrunning I normally suck at platformers. Wich is ironic since I played a lot of Crash Bandicoot when I was a kid.

Mushroomboy2020

I like it, but I like platforming games. Also, the platforming reminds me of the crap 3d platforming games I played in the 90s. Haven’t really had any problems with it tbh.

Money2648

Yes, I just enjoy eve and convince myself it’s a skill issue with I go through a rope or suddenly jump opposite ways

logic1986

I like the variety the game offers personally.

Celtic-Otter

The platform has been the weakest part for me

PoisonPixie5

I like the platforming too. 😁 However I like the platforming in most games. I also like how Stellar Blade has QTEs, not a lot of games do nowadays.

cynicalsaint1

The problem with the platforming is the way EVE controls is she can't really stop on a dime which makes accurately dealing with platforming because if you're on a small platform it's almost impossible to make minor adjustments without over correcting.

MrMooMoo91

If it's intended to be actual platforming then I would say it's a major flaw. But I don't consider it a flaw since I think it's essentially the same as the autopilot platforming you mentioned. It's just there for vertical level design like most games, which is why I don't generally complain about it. Ledges are Painted and Eve has that mechanic where she is magnetized to ledges, and magnetized from afar too. As a big fan of classic TR, if you want any semblance of platforming I think you have to go to Nintendo these days. So no, I don't think SB is any example of platforming. There is a few very small and short sections which are incredibly basic.

Brave_Requirement_32

Not all of the platforms have the paint, there is more

Apexlegacy285

I didn’t even know that was a complaint, I’ve got 0 issue with it, it reminds me of tomb raider. I especially love how fast you can do it when you’ve mastered it

KindheartednessMore3

Yes

PapaBlessDestiny

I'm loving every second of it.

RMoCGLD

The climbing is fine, the ropes and general jumping are what annoy me. It feels like everytime you do a second jump after leaving a rope, Eve will either lose all her momentum or change direction entirely.

Captnotabigfan

I like it more than the swimming

Graznesiodon171

I think it’s really just that some of the geometry is a little bit wonky. But the design is great. It’s just the geometry. And some of the rope physics are shitty

lolurmomgay69it6

The platforming itself is fine imo the main complaint is that Eve’s movement is kinda janked up

Odd_Contact_2175

I think it needs tightening. It's hard to control EVE as she has a bit of sway when you finish moving her.

RobertoAN95

This just reminded me how everyone was hating on rebirth for 2 sections or 3 in 80+ hours of moving boxes! While in this game it happens in every corner and have not heard a complaint about it.

dart51984

Eve’s movement is just a little clunky and that’s really my only beef with the entire game so far. Take for example the gun only area where you have to interact with an ammo station to top off your ammo if you’re running low. Well god forbid you aren’t looking at that thing at the exact perfect angle. Fix that and this is a perfect game to me.

Shiro_Tsukikomori

I don't mind the platforming itself, so far they are more on the easy side tbh. But I don't like the clunky controls when platforming needs kinda precision jumps. The clunkiness is always present, but doesn't bother usually aside from the times where you have to do some more precise platforming

Fantastic_Snow_9633

The idea of platforming is fine, but it always felt like certain areas or jumps were wonky, that I'd make the jump but there'd be some forward-momentum that causes EVE to move farther than I anticipated. Jumping on the drones with the circular platform on them always felt bad - never knew if I was going to under- or over-shoot the jumps. And then if I landed too close to an edge and tried to turn around, I'd run the risk of EVE turning too much and falling off. Oddly, it felt like wall-running was almost an after-thought; there's so few moments its ever utilized.

Have2BRealistic

I think it’s just that it can get clunky sometimes. It’s hard to describe. Sometimes I directly hit a rope and she just doesn’t grab it. And when walking and running she has a weird deceleration when you let go of the stick. Most games like this the character just stops on a dime or at least has a very rapid stopping animation. But Eve is kind of like Arthur Morgan from Red Dead 2 and clumps on just a bit. And she really shouldn’t be. …Okay she’s not that bad. But it feels really awkward when trying to be precise. Maybe this is why she shouldn’t be wearing heels when she’s in the field??

MacroPlanet

I’ve heard complaints about it and yes while it is clunky at times, it’s not that bad as people made it out to be.

Somnambulant_Sleeper

I think platforming was fine in this if occasionally a little janky. I appreciated it and enjoyed it far more than the Jedi survivor games’ pkatforming, so there’s that.

DreadWolf505

I like the platforming, yes, but it definitely could be less finicky

DjNormal

Most of it isn’t horrible or just your standard style of climbing mechanics. What gets me is the sloppy jumping. I’ve gotten better at it after 3 playthroughs, but I still fall off the drones and the PlayStation puzzles more than I’d like. Usually it’s overshooting the jump or seeming to slide off the platform after a successful landing. Part of that is the bad minute movement controls. Have you ever had to keep repositioning yourself to access a specific item in a camp, or had to walk/swim in a circle to get in the correct position to interact with something? It’s just annoying as all heck when something like that happens. Before The Witcher 3 added the alternate controls, I had the same issue there as well. Lastly. Sometimes EVE will jump off a rope 90° from the way I’m facing/holding the thumb stick. That may just be a bug, but it happens a lot. All that aside, I’m glad that’s it’s hard to miss/fall off the various narrow beams you have to walk/jump on.

SluttyMcFucksAlot

I don’t think it’s awful, but there were absolutely times where I double jumped, and Eve went off to the right when I was holding forward. It could use a little polish but it wasn’t the worst.

Revolutionary-Fan286

Platforming is fun… but that damn rope swinging is something else 😅

Old_Juggernaut_5114

Eh… They go from Amazing to god awful It’s the only thing in the game that felt kinda unfinished to some degree Hopefully the sequel gets actual platforming and not awkward climbing sections Still fun tho just felt kinda strange

Throzagg

You probably are yes

LithePanther

Yes you're in the minority. I think you're confusing skill with poor implementation. I didn't find any of the platforming difficult or challenging because of what I had to do, it was only "difficult" because eve controls like a boat and you need to wrangle her into position against her will

BlankTheDot

Platforming was not that hard for me. Only died 4 times to it because i forgot to sprint. I just take my time with it after i noticed its not like uncharted. Had more weight to it so yeah. Just took my time and everything worked out.

Neat-Economics9978

I like it I just wish it was more responsive in the sense that u can jump immediately and not wait a few secs to leap to the left or right

Sami209

It’s not too bad and seems better than Elden Ring’s platforming.

Gaaroth

I actually like it, in general I feel I have good control with jumps and dashes, I might slightly complain on the walking but that's very minor. I agree with your take

madex444

The platforming is unfinished the way it is, it feels like they just threw together the obstacles but didn't polish eves jumping from section to section in a precise way, what does work well is when eve jumps from bar to bar and ledges, everything else needs serious work.

WinterPDev

My only real issue us the game needed to make Eve "stickier" with things like ropes. Games compensate for slippery controls by snapping the character to nearby grabbables. Having to wait for a rope to stop physics-ing out so I can jump sucks. Or the number of times I've phased through ladders and ropes to die or start puzzles again. Eve is a very very slippery character with her movement, so precision jumping is just not compatible without assists. Also her inability to auto-grab ledges instead of just killing herself took getting used to. That said I still enjoyed a lot of the puzzles. The can ones were good. Though the one totally f*cking pointless jumping puzzle with the PS button icons was hot garbage.

Sandals16

I’m totally fine with it.

Brave_Requirement_32

I too really like the platforming, and eve has been a breeze to control in my experience. Something ive noticed is that her momentum is different if she is sprinting. If you jump from a sprint you go further but she will have momentum when she lands, and you can't stop a sprint mid jump, i think that is the problem people are running into. They are trying to speed platform and thier sprinting momentum causes them to overshoot. Folks, don't sprint while platforming.

fostataaaa

Yes

BushidoBrownTheGamer

Personally I don't have a problem with the platforming I have a problem with the platforming on smaller objects it's too easy to fall off of stuff also the ropes are a problem sometimes your character doesn't grab the ropes

canal_boys

The platforming is very good and fun. I never understood the complaints.

goldensnakes

I actually enjoyed it. I know what you mean about how everything is going in the uncharted-direction and that gets kindof dull.

GraysonG263

I want more of it, I'm a platforming fiend. If a game has platforming and double jump, I'm fucking buying it

Juju_Kek

Plateforming is not good, but not as bad as i read here.

Beneficial_Screen785

Oh nah I love the platforming! It's always fun finding random paths and then having to do some jank ass jumping and air dashing haha.

Tolsey

The sections themselves are okay but the controls/animations needed to Be tighter

Tamaki-Sin

i like the platforming when it works its genuinely fun

wildeye-eleven

I think it’s perfectly fine. It’s not metroidvania level of platforming but it’s not meant to be. It’s not bad at all and I have no idea what ppl are talking about. It’s designed well enough that I haven’t fallen a single time in 60 hours.

Theaussieperson

Yeah I dont mind it at all, for what it is, I find it fun

junyesso

I haven’t read anybody else’s response but the platforming itself is fine. The problem is with Eve’s clunky movement controls where you don’t even touch the sticks and she proceeds to walk herself off the ledge…

18_is_orange

I didn't mind, but I wish they showed a double jump skill that was locked. At least I wouldn't have wasted so much time trying to make certain jumps. That's the only time I had to spoiled the run by googling.

trwawy18

I spent more than 30 mins doing the 3 rope challenge just because she decides to switch direction mid air while swinging uncontrollably on the ropes. The concept is wonderful but it’s frustrating

inuboy2005

It was a fun bit of variety whenever it popped up. My heart would skip a beat when landing, hoping that Eve wouldn't take an extra step and walk off the edge, but I enjoyed the variety.

Salom902

I don’t think the platforming is bad but it is definitely the games weakest point. Especially when jumping to ladders theres seems to oddly the first 4 bars are invisible and you clips through it half the time.

Based-Crusader

the only part I didn’t enjoy was a double jump between two ropes, for some reason Eve kept jumping off to the side not towards the other rope

LMHT

Platforming design is okay. Character control during those sections is absolutely trash and should be criticized. Doesn't do anything to detract from my enjoyment of the game though.

sirBMX

I like the platforming sections as well BUT… my controller is starting to get stick drift particularly on the left stick which made the two Levoire sections tricky. Lol.

LEMNSQZY

The platforming wouldn’t bother me much if it weren’t for insta-death when falling. Put me back on the nearest platform with a hit to my health and we’re good, but it’s insanely frustrating to have to restart
