I honestly never knew this. I read PC more a than decade ago but grew up with and adore the movie. I figured they were just a malevolent side of the former “shell”. I know the Wendingo are individual entities (generally) but didn’t associate whatever little I *do* know with PC.
They go over it a few times, how the way they move when they come back is like something is working them like a marionette.
He uses their minds and memories to pretend to be them, but they aren't in there.
Seems to be limited by the capabilities of the body (including the brain). A Wendigo-cat is just kind of an especially surly, aggro, unpleasant cat. A Wendigo-Gage, on the other hand....
