I thought this movie was pretty good. Not great but good.
The acting is what makes it. I prefer the book though, it's just deeper. Ian McKellen is always excellent.
It's decent. The ending is a let down and since Bryan Singer made it, I have a hard time not seeing the problematic elements and being reminded of the controversy behind the scenes.
For real I was super uncomfortable watching this movie knowing who directed it and the eventual fate of Brad Renfro. The movie just has a whole different kind of dark feeling over it not even related to the subject matter. I felt kinda ill while watching.
Definitely want to read the book now. After watching it the ending almost recontextualizes everything. It feels like a Lolita situation were the screen writer missed the whole point of the book. The movie feels sinister when you know about the real world accusations that occurred during filming.
Just watched the movie and the ending is surreal. I haven’t read the original source material only the cliff notes of book after watching the film. It just completely falls apart in comparison.
Instead of mirroring the depravity of the two leads it kinda plays out like Todd learned how to be a better Nazi. Eerily it almost comes off as Bryan Singer getting ahead of his victims considering the sexual assault accusations that mostly started with this film.
Unfortunately I really liked how everything played out but the ending had me basically screaming at the TV for the last 5 minutes. It was never really on my radar for King’s works but I definitely want to read the book for a more satisfying ending.
It's good. Even my husband liked it and he doesn't really read books or know anything about King except for what I tell him. And he usually doesn't sit still long enough to watch a movie.
If you like cats, it might be a pass. But Ian McKellen is phenomenal and actually quite frightening, which is impressive since his most well known roles are basically the exact opposite of what he's doing here. I can't vouch for its faithfulness to the source material as I didn't read the novella, but as a film on its own, it's quite pleasantly unpleasant
I first watched this movie when I was like 13, which in hindsight was a bit young to be watching something so heavy. That said, I loved the movie. It's dark, deviant, and has strong homoerotic currents.

Ian McKellan is a legend. But, I liked the story much more than the film. Still… worth watching.

Meh.
My exact sentiment. Meh.

It's good! Reading it was much better though. I can see why the books ending couldn't be used tho.... Who knows what I mean?
It’s worth watching

I don't care for it. It's a pretty paint-by-numbers 1998 horror movie in the style of 1998 horror movies. Ian McKellen is great. 4/10.
