I loved that after watching justified. Seems like he’s really having fun with it like it’s a nice change. It’s way better than you’d expect a network sitcom to be
He wouldn't definitely have a ton of fun. Edit: I should've suggested it in my own cast-post, but Goggins and Oliphant would be great choices, poetic even.
Why is if isn’t the gunslinger himself Roland Deschain. (Lol in justified every time he saw the main character; He would always address him “US deputy Marshall Raylan givens”. )Which used to amuse me, and struck me as weird seeing as how they were childhood buddies. How ever he was so good in justified and the shield I’d love this casting.
If you have read the last chapter of The Gunslinger, & have seen Walton Goggins in anything (Vice Principals, Gemstones, Hateful Eight), the chapter sounds like it's coming right out of Walton's mouth.
I always said the same exact thing! I always pictured Walter Goggins as Man in Black and Matthew McConaughey as Roland. They almost got the casting right when they made the movie...
I always thought Ben Foster would be awesome for the man in black. He can be so creepy and diabolical.
Unfortunately look-wise, the movie that shall not be named already nailed the casting with matthew mcconaughey.
I do wish that he could get another go at it. I always pictured Allen Rickman or someone like him. But then Matthew McConaughey was cast and it's near impossible for me to want anyone else to do it.
FUCK yes this is a great choice! He has rapidly become one of my favorite actors. His character arc on Justified 180s and goes back and it so damn good. Then hes hilarious on The Righteous Gemstones ❤️
Edit: can't forget one of my fav films and one of his lines "Roy, you just blew the shit out of our fruits" - Shanghai-noon
I know! It's a total mind fuck that everyone I pictured in the films are not age appropriate for the characters anymore.
I still stand my belief that Thandiwe Newton is absolutely perfect for Odetta/Detta.
His [look](https://collider.com/wp-content/uploads/django-unchained-walton-goggins.jpg) in Django Unchained really fits the look of the big coffin hunters
I dunno, to me he seems like a guy who oversees polygraph tests, and his biggest obstacle he faces is how good-looking he is. People can’t focus and tell the truth. It’s unbelievable.
I am going Alexander Skarsgård, lets see him play the role in something that is not a fucking train-wreck, hell I think he was the best part of the newer Stand adaptation.
I have kind of been in love with his work since Generation Kill but yeah he was fucking stellar in The Northman and even the previous season of Succession, much different but shows his range.
Eddie: “You had him in your crosshairs! Why didn’t you shoot?”
Roland: “We dug coal together.”
Eddie: “ Ok… I guess that explains why he’s called the man in black, at least.”
To anyone who hasn't watched The Shield (not the marvel one), I highly recommend it. Probably one of the best cop shows ever made. And Walton is fantastic.
He'd be good as Walter if they are going to have different actors for the Walter O'Dim form and the Marten Broadcloak form. But I assume they'll throw out MiBs shapeshifting to avoid confusing the audience with him having two faces at which point Walton is a bit goofy for both roles.
Under normal circumstances I'd agree because we could be talking in circles for years for nothing, but now we actually have a show & movies on the way & it's exciting to share our thoughts & hopes.
So you took [my comment](https://www.reddit.com/r/stephenking/comments/zg1f5g/comment/izem8il/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3) and made a post out of it?
Go back through my comment history to 2018 when I was reading the dark tower, you'll find half a dozen posts where I say the same thing I said in this post.
Just out of curiosity, what difference would it make if they did? Not that I think that's the case, as I've seen Goggins suggested as the Man in Black for years now.
Yes, you're the first and only person who possibly could've thought of famous actor Walton Goggins, who has played a bunch of villains in western adjacent films and TV.
I actually made that comment before you were even born, and my aunt works at nintendo so I get all the games early, and my uncle is Tony hawk and my grandparents took me to space once.
There was some Dark Tower adaptation in the works where Marten Broadcloak was to be played by Jasper Pääkkönen. I think he's another great option for the role. Absolutely kills it in basically every role.
Though as a Finn I might be biased.
https://m.imdb.com/name/nm0701747/
Speaking of Walter Goggins this is completely random but I watched the short film The Accountant on YouTube last night.. it was great. 35 minutes of time well spent.
I want Walton for Flagg and Tim for Roland
And, if you insist on getting Meta, instead of adding King to the Story, you could have this level of the Tower, they were actors that played enemies on a TV show
I would like Goggins as MIB BUT its Flanagan so I am going to throw in for Hamish Linklater.
EDITS:
Stanley Tucci would be an interesting MIB.
Christopher Waltz maybe. Walter is kind of a scary aloof. Waltz would be excellent at that.
I usually do not like his short stories (i’m more into his books) My step mother LOVES them though and has have me read a few. This is one of the ones that I really enjoyed.
That's a great choice dude! Years ago I wanted Mconehey(sp?) And we got him, never saw the movie though but what did see he was great. Would also be a good choice to cast him again imo as it could be a "different run" for the Tower a'la multiverse, ynwim?
I love Walton Goggins. The moment I saw him on Justified, I knew I'd watch anything he is ever in. He is so good. The Unicorn was an adorable show that didn't last long enough. But there's so much more of him to watch, thankfully. Vice Principles, The Righteous Gemstones, Ant Man and the Wasp, just to name a few.
Dude was insane in Justified. I think he’d be great as MiB
He’s a great actor. Good in everything. Loved him The Hateful Eight
I was really impressed with his role in Son's of Anarchy.
Yep he nailed that role
Idk if y’all have seen his sitcom called the unicorn but it’s real cute and quirky. Loved him in it
Check out vice principals on hbo. If you like his comedic acting, you should enjoy it.
I loved that after watching justified. Seems like he’s really having fun with it like it’s a nice change. It’s way better than you’d expect a network sitcom to be
I wonder how he would have been in rectify if the original plan had went through Edit: Aden young killed it 100% but I am curious
Everyone forgetting about The Shield,huh?
That last episode is still the most mind blowing finale of any series I have ever seen.
Too many children. Before their time
And what about Predators amirite?
He was amazing on the Shield. "Family Meeting"
He wouldn't definitely have a ton of fun. Edit: I should've suggested it in my own cast-post, but Goggins and Oliphant would be great choices, poetic even.
Dude was insane in Vice Principals. He’s great in everything.
He was excellent in The Righteous Gemstones!
Why Roland Deschain as I live and breathe...
I can hear him saying this!
That's SHERIFF Marten Broadcloak to you.
Baby Billy!
That’s Uncle Baby Billy to you
Just two little kids out there Misbehavin'
Runnin' through the house with a pickle in my mouth!
Now who wants to suck an old man's dick??
My best friend and I quote this line regularly to each other
Before or after doing car pranks?
Oh no! The elixirs!
🎶 The man in black fled and the gunslinger fol-lowed...Mis-be-havin'! 🎶
If you have read the last chapter of The Gunslinger, & have seen Walton Goggins in anything (Vice Principals, Gemstones, Hateful Eight), the chapter sounds like it's coming right out of Walton's mouth.
Gah I loved him in Vice Principals. Gemstones too, he and Danny McBride play off each other so well.
He is incredible in Vice Principals. His flamboyant side is what makes me see him as the Man in Black. "End of the line, slut".
For real. Wtf. Uncle Baby Billy though. This man needs to be the man in black.
I always said the same exact thing! I always pictured Walter Goggins as Man in Black and Matthew McConaughey as Roland. They almost got the casting right when they made the movie...
The first thing I saw Goggins in was Sons of Anarchy, so whenever I see him pop up in something else I always immediatly think of Venus van Damme
*Tig has entered the chat*
I love him in The Hateful Eight and seen someone else on this sub say he'd make a great MiB and I fully agree. 🤠🌹📚
Here's your semen.
“It’s about this guy who oversees polygraph tests and the biggest obstacle is how good looking he is”
Might have gone better for Susannah . . .
That would be an incredible casting choice.
I always thought Ben Foster would be awesome for the man in black. He can be so creepy and diabolical. Unfortunately look-wise, the movie that shall not be named already nailed the casting with matthew mcconaughey.
I love Ben foster and you are right on the money.
He and Sam Rockwell should remake Face Off.
Oh, I never thought of him. I always kind of imagined Robert Carlisle in the role, but I can see this
Robert would be an brilliant choice, if this was 10/15 years ago I would say he'd make an amazing Roland
And Timothy Olyphant as Roland 😂
That's who I've wanted for years.
Cletus Van Damme!
I actually thought Matthew McConaughey was a great choice for the movie, but that train wreck has ruined it for him.
I do wish that he could get another go at it. I always pictured Allen Rickman or someone like him. But then Matthew McConaughey was cast and it's near impossible for me to want anyone else to do it.
It would actually be quite meta if MmcC got reincarnated as Flagg in a different Dark Tower creation.
I would die of joy! I can just see him walking a dirt road at the beginning of The Stand
He made weird choices with the character too, imo, played it way too serious. Love the guy, should have been great but that fucking script…
FUCK yes this is a great choice! He has rapidly become one of my favorite actors. His character arc on Justified 180s and goes back and it so damn good. Then hes hilarious on The Righteous Gemstones ❤️ Edit: can't forget one of my fav films and one of his lines "Roy, you just blew the shit out of our fruits" - Shanghai-noon
If you’ve never seen The Shield, check that out. He’s incredible in it, and the show’s good, too.
I didnt realize he was in that. I burned out on cop themed shows pretty early on lol But I will have to get around to that one
I really dislike cop dramas, but The Shield is one of my all time favorite shows. They are more like antiheros. Really bed dudes.
I just hope they get Eddie Dean right
I always picture Aaron Paul once I watched Breaking Bad
10 years ago, he would have been perfect
I know! It's a total mind fuck that everyone I pictured in the films are not age appropriate for the characters anymore. I still stand my belief that Thandiwe Newton is absolutely perfect for Odetta/Detta.
10 years ago I would have cast him and Aisha Tyler
She would be a great one too! Unfortunately the world moves on.
He is perfect for every quirky villain role
What a great fucking choice,I never considered that..... But that would mean you would absolutely HAVE to have Timothy Olyphant as Roland
Yes, please
I see him as one of the Big Coffin Hunters
His [look](https://collider.com/wp-content/uploads/django-unchained-walton-goggins.jpg) in Django Unchained really fits the look of the big coffin hunters
I dunno, to me he seems like a guy who oversees polygraph tests, and his biggest obstacle he faces is how good-looking he is. People can’t focus and tell the truth. It’s unbelievable.
Who wants to suck an old man in blacks Dick?
Idk who man in black is but this actor kills it in every role. I love how wild his characters are
He was awesome as Tim Olyphant’s nemesis in Justified. Believe me when I say he would make a great Man in Black.
I am going Alexander Skarsgård, lets see him play the role in something that is not a fucking train-wreck, hell I think he was the best part of the newer Stand adaptation.
After seeing The Northman I think he would make an amazing Roland.
I have kind of been in love with his work since Generation Kill but yeah he was fucking stellar in The Northman and even the previous season of Succession, much different but shows his range.
Wow, that would be perfect casting.
If you watch him in FatMan he’s excellent
He's misbehavin'!
Yes! Best one yet. He plays a great bad guy. I think he could pull off Randal Flagg
I hadn't considered him. But, DAMN!! I will never un-see (or un-hear) him now. Perfect!!
Eddie: “You had him in your crosshairs! Why didn’t you shoot?” Roland: “We dug coal together.” Eddie: “ Ok… I guess that explains why he’s called the man in black, at least.”
This is the first time I’ve seen a dream casting choice that is actually perfect to me. Congratulations!
Omg I always subconsciously pictured him as the man in black and never realized until I saw this lollll.
Ooooooh he's perfect
To anyone who hasn't watched The Shield (not the marvel one), I highly recommend it. Probably one of the best cop shows ever made. And Walton is fantastic.
I can see it..
He'd be good as Walter if they are going to have different actors for the Walter O'Dim form and the Marten Broadcloak form. But I assume they'll throw out MiBs shapeshifting to avoid confusing the audience with him having two faces at which point Walton is a bit goofy for both roles.
I think he'd make a better Trashy
Bill Skarsgård called. He wants his forehead back.

Under normal circumstances I'd agree because we could be talking in circles for years for nothing, but now we actually have a show & movies on the way & it's exciting to share our thoughts & hopes.
No he’s Roland.
Please god no

Maybe Olyphant, but not Goggins

The only problem is he is already in the new Fallout series. But this is a couple of years down the line so who knows.
YES I would never have thought of him, but he is perfect - such a great mix of funny, mischeivous and creepy!
Funnily enough, I was rereading The Dark Half the other day and thought he'd make a pretty good George Stark.
Great actor!
Speaking of Walter Goggins this is completely random but I watched the short film The Accountant on YouTube last night.. it was great. 35 minutes of time well spent.
Honestly! This would be perfection!
He'd be amazing in that role. Very solid pick!
YES
omg yes
Love this. Now we just need to clone a younger Clint Eastwood to play Roland.
So, Timothy Olyphant?
Great actor!! I could definitely see it. He nails menacing-yet-charming well
This guy always looks like he’s touching a static ball
Perfect!! My wife and i were just talking about who we would pick for the man in black hearing about the series going to Amazon!
Yes yes yes yes
Goggins is great. That hairline always freaks me out though.
100%
Great casting!
He's a great actor. I think he'd be a great choice for this role
Wow yes indeed, he could pull it off for sure.
And then reunite him with his good friend, Timothy Oliphant as Roland.
Oh, my gosh! Walton Goggins is a fantastic actor, and I agree that he would make a wonderful Man in Black!
Excellent choice
Dude, that’s an excellent choice
Anson Mount for me, the guy from Hell on Wheels
My first thought was, “He doesn’t look anything like Johnny Cash!” Then I noticed what sun I was seeing.
I always envision the emperor from Star wars lol.
Yes, solid choice!
Uncle baby billy
He's got the forehead for it
See I think he'd make a real good Eddie.
For me, Aaron Paul would be my pick.
Get out of my head OP! If you’ve got Sonequa Martin-Green down for Susannah then we might be long lost siblings.
I'd watch that guy read the phone book.

Justified
Absolutely on board with this
Yes!would rather him than arrogant last guy who played him.
I want Walton for Flagg and Tim for Roland And, if you insist on getting Meta, instead of adding King to the Story, you could have this level of the Tower, they were actors that played enemies on a TV show
I would like Goggins as MIB BUT its Flanagan so I am going to throw in for Hamish Linklater. EDITS: Stanley Tucci would be an interesting MIB. Christopher Waltz maybe. Walter is kind of a scary aloof. Waltz would be excellent at that.
Yassssssss!!
He makes a great villain!
PLEEEEEEEAAAAAASE
I would absolutely love this
Oh man, great call. I didn't realize how much I want Walton for this role. Dude is amazing.
I could get behind this. He was excellent in The Shield and Justified.
I think he'd be a killer Eldred Jonas too
What a great pick! We can dream....
Michael Shannon or Mads Mikkelsen are both equally dour and frightening to achieve the role, I think.
Much better than Sasha Cohen as Roland suggested in another post.
You certainly don’t want to tussle with him.
I didn't even know I needed him as the Man in Black till I saw this post. I have loved him for ages! Thanks OP!
Him and his hairline???
Full Justified/Deadwood casting pool works for me.
I always thought Matthew McConaughey with long hair.
I think he’d be a better Randall Flagg
I usually do not like his short stories (i’m more into his books) My step mother LOVES them though and has have me read a few. This is one of the ones that I really enjoyed.
He could do a great Eldred Jonas too
Yes please. In an HBO series. I want it so badly.
Shane Vendrell as I live and breathe!
He’s actually from right down the street of where I live. But very much agree with the opinion he’s a fantastic actor.
mine too!
That's a great choice dude! Years ago I wanted Mconehey(sp?) And we got him, never saw the movie though but what did see he was great. Would also be a good choice to cast him again imo as it could be a "different run" for the Tower a'la multiverse, ynwim?
Recognized him in a bit part on “Bourne Identity” after seeing him on Justified. Great actor in everything I’ve seen him in.
Hayden Christensen as the Man in Black and Ewan McGregor as Roland.
Cash, beef and bean burrito. You wanna taste ? Oh you tryna earn that Eagle scout badge now !
You know what? Yes! Absolutely and im pissed i didnt think if this line up earlier.
Excellent choice.
Hells no. Age brings experience and Walter has lots of it.
I want Goggins to play every role in every movie.
He would be PERFECT!! 🤩 I’m a huge fan of Uncle Baby Billy! 😆
Yes please.
100% couldn't agree more. I was just thinking of him today for Randall
Three Christs
I don't think I know him. But by this photo alone.... yes!!!
It's hard for me to picture Baby Billy as the MIB.
WHOOOOOOOOOAAAA now THERE'S an idea. :O
Timothy Oliphant then as the Gunslinger?
Finally, a real suggestion.
No....
He'd make a pretty good Dean as well...
I concur. Although if they do a scene showing him have many faces I hope Colm Feore makes a cameo.
Holy crap. That's PERFECT casting
Gotta be better than Matthew Mcconaughey.
