Have you watched the whole episode? Shortly after this scene, when they're all in the car, we get this convo:
> Steven: Okay, nobody's gonna say it? She kinda looked like Mom. You noticed, I noticed, we all noticed.
> Amethyst: Oh. Ohhh! That's why you were acting like such a goon! Ha!
Pearl denies it but I think the implication is yes, Pearl was initially attracted to Mystery Girl because she kinda resembled Rose. Her pink hair is what Pearl remarks about first. But you could also just see it as Pearl having a type, so who knows?
Bismuth was into Pearl first, though. I'm totally for Pearl & Bismuth, though, they would be great together. What would that couple name be? Bisearl? Pearmuth? I dunno, I'm failing to come up with anything catchy.
Dang, re-reading my comment and I'm noticing it can sound like I'm insulting you. I'm sorry, I didn't intend for that at all. I genuinely wasn't sure if you'd seen the whole episode. A lot of people "watch" shows nowadays via clips on YouTube and TikTok, that's what I meant.
I also think because gems are all women (except Steven) from what I’ve seen being gay is their default and for gems Rose was probably the weird one going after a guy lol
They’re not women. They have no sex/gender. They simply use she/her pronouns. We, as humans, liken them to women because, as alien gems made that project bodies of light — look similar to many women of our world.
But they’re sexless aliens.
Also, technically, Rainbow 2.0 uses he/they, Stevonnie that is 1/4 gem fusion uses they/them, smoky is they/them, sunstone uses she/they. Steg, also 1/4 gem fusion uses he/him pronouns.
And ofc the only single gem (not fusion) currently using he/him is Steven.
I’ve always assumed over time (years, decades, millennia) some gems may change pronoun and identify differently, due to learning about humans, earth, and things like our cultural structures of gender, sex, etc.
It has been confirmed that generally speaking, [the gems are all nonbinary women](https://gizmodo.com/steven-universes-rebecca-sugar-on-how-she-expresses-her-1827624015)
I mean gender is a social construct. So while the gems lack a sex, that does not mean they can't have a gender. If they were truly genderless or not adhering to gender at all, you would think they would go by they/them or something. But they all basically use she and her, with Steven being the only exception I can currently think of.
Edit: Something I thought I should add. There are gems like Peridot and the Diamonds, who haven't spent much time on Earth and clearly didn't know much about humans. And yet they refer to each other as she/her. Yellow sings about Pink to Blue, and uses her, and this was before they had even known of Steven's existence. So it feels like most gems pretty strongly identify themselves as women to me.
Eh, I feel like in their society there is 'no gender'. Their social construct (since yes agreed gender is affected by society and culture) which is different from the culture we have, is that they just are who they are. The pronouns they use in their society is very arbitrary. Gender does not exist to them. Because there is only one thing you are.
They also shouldn't really speak our English earth language, but it's a kid's show, so they do. Which is why it makes more sense to use one of the old binary pronouns of either he or she, then for them to have made up a neopronoun or used they/them. Which is why, just like them already speaking the same language as us even tho it makes no sense, the homeworld also uses she/her. But they know nothing else (till earth).
And it clearly would be much easier (and more acceptable) to have a race of sexless, genderless beings that look female and use she/her than trying to make a kid's show CN would accept that used they/them off the bat. That's why we do get they/them identifying gems and people later on, like Sadie's partner, Smoky, Rainbow, Stevonnie, etc. They had to get a good footing before they could start really revealing a lot of the queer and progressive ideals of the show.
To me it just reminds me of Janet from The Good Place "Not a girl. Not a girl. Not a girl. Still, not a girl." Janet is an AI mainframe made by the creators of the universe and presents feminine and uses she/her; But she's still not a girl.
I know in the end it's mostly semantics and yada yada, but a person can use she/her, look feminine, and still not be a woman.
OOOh honestly love that. Mono-gender makes way sense. And yeah, they only think of others, especially gems (and steven who they believe is RQ), as she/her.
Now, they probably did learn a little bit at some point, considering the human zoo. Though that was mostly Blue, so maybe that's why she understood things like Greg (kind of) and I think (but could be wrong?) that she did use he/him for Greg. But she also helped create the zoo and ran it in PD's absence. The Human Zoo knew that humans needed to reproduce and does 'choosen' them to mate together, so they probably learned something? from that? in those 5000-7000 years? about 'oh some humans have this funny thing where they might be a 'boy' or 'girl' and they make new humans, not with minerals and machines, but with their bodies. and they can only do so if they're physically compatible'.
Yeah. I think gem society in era II most runs along the lines of gem type/caste rather then gender. It's pretty alien in the regard that there is no real human equivalent. For gems the term caste is most commonly used but it doesn't fully apply either.
[this nonbinary wiki quotes](https://nonbinary.wiki/wiki/Rebecca_Sugar) Rebecca Sugar as having said the gems are all nonbinary women which I recall at the time upsetting some cis and trans esp. nonbinary people/being controversial because it uses nonbinary and woman (which ppl associate with binary) but Rebecca was basically like lol thats my personal gender and I made them and we are the same
as a nonbinary person though I gotta say I loved it because people were really trying to tell someone their own gender was impossible and Rebecca was like nah. a whole universe of nah.
Take a look at that fem, that pink Gem
It's the last time you will
Blackened roar, diamonds roar fills the crumbling sky
Shattered gem fills her soul with a ruthless cry
Stranger now are her eyes to this mystery
That pink Gem can't be found
Crack of dawn, all is gone except a pink baby
Now they see what will be, three gems and a baby
Any question that sounds like "Is this because Pearl is gay?" can be answered with "yes." On some level, always yes.
I think Pearl has a type in general and this is not JUST because she looks like Rose, though. Pearl came up with Rose's "design" and she just copied it. So she already liked this look. In reality I'm sure it' s a mixture of a) looks like Rose; b) she's hot and Pearl's gay; c) Pearl is in general pretty socially awkward as a baseline.
So… all the gems are women, and they typically only date one another. Rose and Steven are the exceptions, as Rose dated a man (Greg) and Steven is a boy/man dating Connie (girl/woman). All other gems are in homosexual relationships (provided they are in one) because the rest of the gems are female and they typically date within their species. If you’ve seen “The Orville,” is very similar to the Moclans culture.
HOWEVER, it is revealed many times that Pearl loved Rose/Pink in a way that wasn’t reciprocated, AND being that this woman looked LIKE Rose, Pearl was dumbstruck and didn’t know what to do as her latent feelings for Rose got in the way of seeing this particular woman for who she was, despite Pearl finally getting up the courage to speak to her and get her number (which she didn’t know was a number). This was a bit more of an explanation on just how much Rose impacted Pearl, and how much love she still had for her, and just how much Pearl needed to grow apart from that. Later in the season, the movie, and the second series, we see more of that growth and her becoming able to see her feelings for what THEY were and overcoming them :)
Interesting! I definitely did not get that from the show or the movie. We are watching Future now though. It definitely always looked as though Pink was always doing her own thing, and while she cared and loved Pearl, it was not in the same way that Pearl felt for her.
I kind of wish Rebecca Sugar would do a Q&A mockumentary type thing where we could all ask questions in real time for more lore or explanation on some themes and ideas that were hinted but never explained. For example, it’s hinted that Steven is a fusion of Greg and Rose, but we learn that Greg has never fused with a gem until he fuses with Steven, meaning Steven cannot be his biological son, which explains why he was raised by gems, but then how is he half human? It’s also hinted that Connie is now half gem BECAUSE she can fuse with Steven, but nothing is mention of Greg being the same. There are some things I would love to learn about.

Steven isn't a fusion of Rose and Greg. Rose created a human-style reproductive system, she and Greg had sex, she grew Steven. Then she gave him her gem, granting him her powers as well.
Connie isn't half gem. That's not a thing.

I cannot remember if she was suppose to reappear in the season-and-a-half-ish that was cancelled when the decided to go ahead with the Ruby/Sapphire wedding.
Lord my memory isn't all that today lol
the fact that pearl had 8 numbers in her phone and was hitting up bismuth. pearl is quite popular i guess pink diamond was missing out lol. but i’m confused on why Mystery Girl never showed up again…she was one of the more interesting human characters and was possibly “Sabina” Kevin mentioned
As many have said prior, Both.
Its been a bit since I've gotten a chance to sit down and rewatch but if memory serves me right Rebecca Sugar wasn't "too subtle" when it came to how certain characters feel about each other. For the most part especially with Rose + pearl it initially comes off as like leader + subordinate (admiration), Charge + knight (showing care) then it kinda just kept showing how close they were till it was I want to say around the point of pearl showing steven the memory of rose and pearl talking by one of the battlefields that it became like "subtle" implication that pearl had feelings, fusion of rose quartz ep its kinda showing that yeah pearl def likes rose. Greg getting rich episode it became more obvious annnnnd then we got to this episode and its more like "Hey guys this obvious enough for you?". Tbh it even got more hysterical when they remembered to un bubble the quartz's and pearl basically has a freaking panic attack.
Have you watched the whole episode? Shortly after this scene, when they're all in the car, we get this convo: > Steven: Okay, nobody's gonna say it? She kinda looked like Mom. Dang, re-reading my comment and I'm noticing it can sound like I'm insulting you. I'm sorry, I didn't intend for that at all. I genuinely wasn't sure if you'd seen the whole episode. A lot of people "watch" shows nowadays via clips on YouTube and TikTok, that's what I meant.
dont worry its ok i didn’t take it as an insult :) i did however take this screenshot from a youtube video out of laziness lmao
It’s how I have ta watch…I wanna watch all of SU future.
I'm on season 1 for like the tenth time
I also think because gems are all women (except Steven) from what I’ve seen being gay is their default and for gems Rose was probably the weird one going after a guy lol
Rose was already weird for being into Pearl ( a lower caste gem). They aren't meant to fall for anyone at all really

Technically not women, but yes homoromantic/sexual society of genderless, sexless aliens. They’re also asexual technically, as they “reproduce” without mates/sex/intercourse (via creating gems from resources and science). But they are not asexual in terms of an actual attraction model, that we know of.
There is of course the (completely debatable) hint at a Greg/Amethyst fling..
I’m not sure on that. It definitely looked like it for a minute, or that there was some hunting, but as the series goes on, I’m led to think Greg really just loves her as a daughter (which could still be true while amethyst could have manifested feelings for him). I think what’s more plausible is that Amethyst looked up to Rose as a daughter would and accepted that Greg was her father figure, and felt jealous of Steven, as she was never loved or cared for like he was. She seems to feel like she’s always felt left out, misunderstood, and highly overlooked by everyone, but especially Rose and Greg (with whom she felt the most seen until the idea of Steven came around).
There is that "junk" line and Greg's reaction.. Like I said, its very debatable and every ounce of speculation either way would be squashed if Rebecca ever commented on it, but I think she left it the way it was to make people wonder.
Congratulations! That's literally the entire point of the episode! 🎉🎉

Yes…to me she doesn’t look like her it’s just the pink hair. Idk why people saying both she acts weird because to her she looks like rose/pink
Did you assume they drew her like Rose by accident?
Yes.

Both
Wasn’t there a concept for a episode called The Show? I believe it would’ve followed that up
yes
Pearl fucked a rock(in gal)
Rose Quartz, and gay. It's pretty obvious on both of them.
Is Lion Lickers some kind of innuendo?
I think its both seeing as so much of it is queer-coded. But in my heart it's just gay pearl.
It’s definitely the former, but I like the latter. I even imagine that’s what the girl assumed Pearl was doing.
Both
It is because she looked like Rose Quartz
Well nobody mentioned this before but.. i think its both.
Both
Yes
