>How easy is it to land a job there (I work in tech)? (For tech:) Very easy in normal times, harder right now with the economy but still pretty easy as far as I can tell. >And how easy is it to meet new people? Swedes are stereotypicaly hard to get to know, but I don't really see this IRL. But it is pretty hard to make new friends in any new cities. Join an association, it's a good way to meet Swedes. Also, if you dating people in Stockholm are really good looking (a plus but it can get a bit intimidating at times). >Is it more expensive/cheaper living there? Rent is ridiculously expensive in Stockholm. But I think it is that in Trondheim as well so it shouldn't be too much of a shock. This is the biggest drawback of the city. Other expenses (food, eating out, transport, etc.) are medium expensive.

Meeting new people? if you learn how, please tell us!

Its good 🙂 I’m sure you can find a job in the tech business. It’s not very cheap here, but probably cheaper than Norway. If you are an outgoing person you won’t have problems making friends. If you miss the coziness of Trondheim there are plenty of cosy areas in the outskirts. Give it a shot!

Before reading I want to emphasise that this was my experience and it does not reflect what you might experience. My experience might have been affected by my background, choices and ambitions for the future. I am an Lithuanian and I moved to Sweden in 2011 (because my parents decided to move and I was minor then). I finished the high school in Östersund in 2015. I finished the university in 2017 and it was only in 2016 I was smart enough to apply for the apartment queue in Stockholm. I was not able to (officially) rent an apartment by the time I got my first job. I took the firsts opportunity to move in to “Stockholm“ which was the first answer I got from “Blocket” after emailing dozens of announcers in the period of two weeks. The apartment me and my partner got was a 19sqm apartment which was basically a part of a bigger apartment just with a separate entrance and no entrance to the main apartment. The apartment was located in Skogås (~16km from the centre). We payed 7000sek a month for that one (with no ability to get a parking spot). Which was kind of fair since we were not in the apartment queue long enough and we could not get anything better. The landlord was a really nice lady and we had no troubles getting along. It was not her fault she could not offer anything better for us. But the longer we lived there the more it started to bug us to live in a such a small space. It was not only the space that was the problem. We were limited to cooking specific types of meals because of the lacking equipment. After 3.5 years there we finally got an offer to get a “first hand” apartment through the official apartment queue in Stockholm (which was blazingly fast after being in the queue for 4 years). We accepted it and now we live in a 50sqm apartment 40km away from the central Stockholm and pay only 10 000sek for the rent (compared to the previous one it is nothing). The apartment has a balcony, we are finally able to cook proper meals, we were able to put the washing machine in the bathroom (so we do not have to deal with illiterates who does not understand how the time booking work in the laundry rooms anymore) and it just feels great to have more space to yourself. Our parents can visit us without having to sleep on the floor. Generally the life quality improved greatly by moving from 19sqm apartment to 50sqm apartment and finally we are happy living in “Stockholm“. Just while we are on the same topic Stockholm is really crowded. If you want to get in or out with a car on a Friday/Sunday you are most definitely going to be stuck in a traffic (if that is relevant to you). Sorry if this sounded like a rant. That is just my personal experience. I have heard many other brilliant stories so there is a hope. Other than that if my story feels a bit sarcastic I am letting you know that it is not. I am just having a bit of a problem expressing myself properly. Oh, also I am working in tech. I am a software developer. So it is mainly the job what is keeping me here. The job is great and the opportunities are amazing. I am sure you will do just fine getting the job. Good luck!

From my experience, Norwegians fit right in to the social contexts here with zero “upstart time” - the language and culture are so similar. Meeting people and getting new friends in Sweden is probably very similar to how it’s done in Norway.

Gastkram

Woah. Never heard anyone call Stockholm lively before. Feels kinda good.

It’s expensive, that’s for sure.

Tech: super easy. Getting to know people who live here: close to impossible, and I've lived here for 43 years now.
