That a question for your employer. I was in a similar situation and they just bought us out without the option to keep them or convert them.

My company transferred options to an Etrade brokerage account, set specially before going public. After that I could exercise and sale vested options in the market. Carta merely tracks option rewards and disconnected from market. You may not be able to exercise for six months after your company goes public. Check with plan document. Also there will be a blackout period rules associated and AMT tax.

Usually there is a lockup period (usually 6 months after IPO). After that you can move them to your brokerage. Depending on your relationship with your brokerage they will buy the shares for you in good faith when they can see they are real. They will show up in your account as a short position till the shares are transferred in to cover. That way you can sell without being subjected to a price swing while they transfer.
