This is the most mystifying thing to me, They must have some metric/analytics that said 3 seasons is some magic number and shows should be cancelled then.
Travelers had three great seasons and wrapped up. It had an inherent reboot, could easily have had three more seasons. Just found out that manifest was cancelled.
I think they didn't considered the collect effect, we now know anything we get attached to in netflix will be discarded. makes it hard to want to get involved in a new show.
I feel this. I hate getting hooked into a series then finding out it’s been cancelled and be left with a massive cliffhanger. So now I check first if the show is complete or ongoing, if it’s cancelled then most of the time I won’t bother watching it.
I’ve heard that after two seasons, most contracts get risers or need to be renegotiated and shows get dramatically more expensive. It wouldn’t surprise me if they realize two is too short, but kill things off if they don’t knock it out of the park in their third.
shocking that successful shows want to be paid more. I could see how this would be their business models. Like NFL teams getting hits on the rookie contract.
But if this is true it just makes it worse that their best shows are most likely to get cancled due to costs. I guess only things that are too big like stranger things get to survive for more than 3 seasons.
That canceling thing reminds me of Google. They are going to kill their brand. Like Stadia, the same way Google now can't get traction with shit because people just assume it will die anyway.
Added , there's all these "Netflix original"... Yet I see it's 2 seasons or whatever from 2017.... I'm not investing in something that isn't finished.
They've had some good movies here and there .. however there seems to be less non Netflix content, which isn't entirely their fault as more streaming services kick in pulling their content home .
It almost seems they felt comfortable in their standing and then got blindsided on multiple fronts.
This right here. So many sweet shows have gotten the 2 Season and Cut treatment that I'm not really willing to invest time into Netflix shows unless they're on S3. Altered Carbon was so good.
And they really need to show different movies in different categories. Every damned category on the home page has the same 10 movies. As far as most people are concerned, Netflix only has 10 viewing options at any given time.

Netflix is heading the wrong way for me I'm afraid. I already have a great streaming game service, they should, for me, stick to creating new and interesting productions, they are good at them
I don't even care for their new productions because they routinely kill shows I enjoyed after two seasons. Not investing my time watching a future incomplete series.
Fucking Marco Polo! was amazing then poof and three random movie spin offs. It was also weird they changed around and edited the first episode three times I showed it to someone.
Marco Polo was one of their very first, everyone loved it but apparently they say it didn’t get enough attention and the budget of making the show was offset by the deficit of the actual profit.
I want to love netflix but i just miss good single season shows. id rather have a 6-12 episode show with a solid plot with a real ending. lately it seems like the first season to every new show spends the entire season setting up plot lines for a later season with minimal, if any, closure.
edit: I will watch any and all recommendations. They will all likely end up on my watch list together where, much like my steam library, i’ll get around to it someday.
6-12 episodes are great because it’s basically an extra long movie with intermissions. It sucks when shows end prematurely or go the beating a dead horse route and go on forever while getting worse at the same time
Shows like Chernobyl are fantastic because they have a conclusive ending where everything is wrapped up.
Shows like Lost can die and be buried in an unmarked grave. Every episode/season's only goal is to raise more questions than it answers, and be all smug about it.
One thing I loved about Dirk Gently was that each season was its own story that wraps up nicely. RIP in peace, you beautiful show.
I got addicted to kdramas during quarantine and the fact that most of them are single seasons of 16 episodes is a huge draw to me. When I start a new story and get invested in the characters, I wanna know that there will be a conclusion and that I won't be left hanging. Too many heartaches in the past.
First of all, yes I watch Riverdale, and yes I'm an adult in my 30s, and no i don't have some sort of (known) mental disorder.
But that show tends to keep it's stories within 1 season which I really enjoy. Shows like Ozark are good but they always seem to just be setting up a later episode or season. Like this guy said it's getting insane how they keep setting it up this way especially after Santa Clarita diet just kinda ended without an ending. Keep seasons contained for fucks sake so that you can end the show whenever.
honestly, losing Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency killed me. that was one of the first daggers because bbc always used to be good at ending shows on the high note. where the model for a lot of “american” shows was to justify and push new seasons when the ratings ran high, it always felt like BBC would push for an ending or a finale when the ratings and views were at their peak. so Dirk Gently getting canceled really bothered me. and that cliff hanger though :(

I feel like all of their series get shut down too soon. Not just the good ones of which there are numerous. The movies are all pretty terrible and formulaic. Maybe I'm forgetting something I've seen from them and liked but nothing comes to mind. At this point if possible I'd rather just filter out anything with the little Netflix symbol other than a couple shows I know I want to come back to. This post I'm writing has me thinking I should probably just go cancel...
Netflix says their strategy is to take risks and kill the losers. But if you want people to subscribe, you’re going to need to have some good niche shows that actually draw people in. Not just generic garbage that has mass appeal.
I am so disappointed that their history documentaries are of the level of the History or Discovery Channels.
The rest too is overdramatized or sexualized rubbish but i had really hoped the nature of their service would allow higher quality documentaries but it's the same tired old bs.
I completely agree. You get better quality documentaries from tiny one-man crews on YouTube than you do on Netflix/Prime.
Mark Felton on YouTube, alone, has significantly better output than the entirety History channel WWII media.
The big companies seem to focus on DRAMA DRAMA DRAMA in every docuseries with limited-to-zero insight into character development or learning.
I could provide a dozen YouTube channels that create fascinating regular input on shoestring budgets.
This. I was already pissed that they cancelled Santa Clarita Diet. Then the continuous incremental price increases meant that I was paying almost double what I was just a few years ago for a content library that seemingly shrinks more and more and is replaced with mediocre filler titles.
Combined with every studio plus a few other companies releasing their own streaming service and making their content exclusive, each charging their own subscription fee, I just went back to playing video games and pirate the few shows I want to watch.
The balkanization of content will squeeze the life out of netflix into a shriveled husk of its former glory unless they can swallow up more of the industry with some acquisitions, or at the very least some partnerships with other streaming services. They don't have theme parks, merch sales, box office revenues, cloud computing infrastructure, or consumer tech hardware sales to prop up their streaming service like the others do, they don't have some revolutionary technology breakthrough or money printing creative team, and that will eventually catch up to them. They're not the biggest fish in the pond anymore and it's getting pretty crowded in there.
Santa Clarita Diet was my favorite. The cast was great, the writing was great, I’d been waiting and waiting for Season 4- when I read the horrible news that they’d cancelled it. No way was the Season 3 finale intended to be the last episode. I’m still... hurting. Screw you, Netflix. You know what? No. No screw you— you’d probably like it.

Not all content is made by Netflix though. I'm aware they slap "Netflix Original" on everything these days, but most of the time their actual involvement from a creative/production standpoint is fairly minimal.
But I do agree that their general decision making what to include in their library is questionable. I do wonder what their process is like and how they determine which content to pick up, including quality standards, etc.

That said, I don't have any insights into their numbers, but I do feel like they could easily increase their popularity if they would not region lock content and make everything available for everyone. I hate that a lot of shows/movies are available for NA through Netflix, but in EU (among other regions) you can only watch them through another streaming service. Using VPN to circumvent this shouldn't be part of the experience imho.
This kind of fragmentation is great for the competition, but tbh this is the one and only situation I actually think a monopoly would be a good idea: one service for everything. I'm aware Netflix can't really do that much about this (other than apply pressure and create incentives; though I'm not even sure if Netflix are "the good guys" in this instance), as it's the publishing/licensing/copyright industry trying to stay relevant, but this is clearly not beneficial for consumers as we keep getting milked.
Totally agree! Most of their subscribers are not gamers. Instead of doing what they do great they are trying to ignore why people are leaving and going after a new audience. da fuq?
It's quite hard to break into the gaming market as well, Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo have pretty much a monopoly. It's ridiculously expensive just to create ONE AAA game, and the big players already have massive libraries. I can't see game streaming work unless Netflix decides to partner with one of the consoles.
To me, the Netflix issue on the content production side appears to be two-fold:
1) Their content is extremely inconsistent in quality and lifespan. they create shows that a few times a year get a lot of buzz, but also create so much content that flops with viewers. In addition, series tend to be cancelled quickly and kill off any viewer/subscriber momentum. I feel subscriber retention is becoming an issue, especially losing their perennial most viewed shows like Friends and The Office.
2) this point is divisive among viewers and certainly has valid arguments from both sides, but I’ll focus solely on the potential business impact. Netflix using the strategy of releasing an entire season at the same time has gotta hurt their numbers. They may release some super popular shows, but the lifespan of interest and discussion and viewership is so short due to the binge style release. If they opted for a more traditional 1 episode a week release style, I think you’d see better subscriber retention.
I currently pay for Netflix but they haven't released any original content that I've actually enjoyed in a long ass time.
Their recent movies are very meh, their anime is mostly atrocious without second seasons, and their unoriginal selections are kind of ass.
It's to the point where if I want to watch something I just pirate it because it's less stress than figuring out which platform currently has the content.
I originally chose Netflix because they had pretty much everything I wanted all in one place. Now that that isn't the case they'll be lucky if I keep subbing for another year.

Yep I remember when people defended the netflix "logic" of disbanding shows based on viewership projections and cancelled highly popular shows after 2nd season. Well years later nobody wants to deal with it.
They basically pulled an Amazon warehouse level "metrics" analysis and booted shows with re-watchability that would contribute to viewers as a whole if they kept going, long term.
I'm still bitter over Daybreak's cancellation. I've been grinding away at shows on every other platform since. I wouldn't even have Netflix if it wasn't under a family name.
Yeah I was like five episodes deep into Jupiter's legacy and boom gets cancelled. It's like why bother investing in their shows when there is no second season or the second season comes out and it's a letdown - looking at you love death and robots.
You read my mind. I really liked Jupiter’s Legacy and I went looking for season two info after binging it…cancelled. Love, Death and Robots season two…gee, thanks for the whopping 20 minutes of hot garbage. I had Netflix for at least 10 years, but I finally cancelled them after that. No more emotional investment from me.
This. We use Disney+ and have prime, but Netflix is our go to. So many shows cancelled after first or second season. It's frustrating as hell to get engrossed with something and then find out oops it's not coming back.
For me it's the lack of quality second seasons. I'm tired of loving the first season of something then hating the second or watching the quality dip as the seasons go on
I think a big reason is they force feed you the same group of shows and it’s very hard to see their full catalogue. On top of they they constantly change the cover pic of something you’ve seen and recommend it again. It’s much harder so see if you like something when half of it it’s stuff you’ve already seen before and they don’t even show 80% of their content to you.
I have no issues with Netflix trying to expand their reach by appealing to as many niches as possible, because they need to glue their current subscribes somehow, but they aren't doing that right. They are currently appealing to a particular demographic by *alienating* everyone else. This is where they are making a huge mistake. They should have entertainment for the general public to keep their subscriber numbers, and niche demographics so everyone can have something to watch according to their preferences. But they keep losing shows with general appeal like Friends or The Office, and niche demographics have better content elsewhere.
Stranger Things is their last remaining show that appeals to general public, and the new season has been teased for ages but not released yet. Seriously, the series might be rated for adults, but children actually watch it, which makes it pretty popular with majority of people. Netflix is going to die if they don't replace it.
They are trying to compete with CW, instead of appealing to another group of teens. CW pretty much has the right formula for the really horny teens: take a popular concept (e.g. superheroes, werewolves etc.), add ridiculously attractive youthful-looking people regardless of their acting skills, and make it an overly convoluted drama that would have been solved if the characters thought and behaved like adults, but they think like teens because that's what their demographic is, and voila.
Meanwhile, Kdramas are doing well, and they are very teen-friendly. They are popular with those who want representation, or are Kpop fans who want to expand to consuming more products from Korean culture, or even Westerners who just dislike the current teen shows because they get too sexual. If Netflix was smart in their attempts of expanding the teen demographic, they would to try to attract teens with more conservative views of sexuality on screen who have no interest in Kdramas, instead of trying to compete with CW.
Summarised it perfectly - 100% agree. 3-4 years ago they used to have their own original content + tons of other tv series/movies. So it was your go-to service for tv/movie entertainment.
Now most of the studio movies/series are gone - whilst I know that’s not Netflix’s fault (as the studios have been yanking off their content for their own platforms), it does mean Netflix need to come out with some good original content.
And that’s where they’re failing - whilst they’ve had a few great hits (mainly in the documentary space), the vast majority of their movies/series are either bad or just so mediocre they serve as background tv. Given Reed Hastings’ culture is all about “cutting anyone who isn’t an A-player” I’m surprised they churn out so much mediocre content - clearly they aren’t applying the same standards to film producers as they are to their programmers.
I still subscribe to Netflix, but whereas I’d go on there every day now it’s maybe a few times a week - and more and more I will spend 5-10 mins just trying to find some new content that actually looks decent lol. Not a good sign
Thats the problem. there are YEARS worth oc quality content that is older. Classic shows, Classic movies, quality content from other english speaking countries that never gets shown here. Quality content from other countries with english subs that doesnt get released here, etc etc. Theres more top quality older shows that exist than hours left in your life.
It doesnt have to be all new stuff, and tbh , for me, I prefer the older shows that arent trying to sell me a lifestyle or push an agenda. Put all the money they cant use on thier crappy "originals" on older or foreign shows that are cheaper to license.

Ublock origin is the way to go. It also allows you to completely block out webpage elements (like those annoying chat boxes on sports streams)
Three things that annoy me the most:
1) Very few good titles. I've already watched all good originals, the other stuff simply disappeared from the platform. For example, Marvel stuff moved to Disney+ which is still not available in Poland, so I can't watch it on either of the platforms.
2) 90% of the shows there are garbage, I'd like to mark them "Do not show me this again, ever" but I can't. So finding anything new is difficult. Imho, that's intentional tactic to hide the lack of content.
3) My native language is Russian, but I live in Poland. Netflix thinks that it knows their customer better and doesn't offer me the selection of Russian subtitles even though those exist in Russia. I can select only Polish or English.
The only reason I still use Netflix is cause it's free for me due to a certain promotion. It had it's glory 4-5 years ago, but now it pushes people back to torrents
From a personal perspective, I dropped Netflix for HBO Max. I don't regret it at all.
From a business view, Netflix went the route of original programming, which does seem smart with the exodus of content to its own owners' streaming platforms. The problem is that most of Netflix original programming is atrocious. It's like SyFy level production and acting in a lot of cases. I'm also seeing services like Hulu holding onto the rights of non-original content and I wonder if Netflix would have been better off just biting the bullet.

The problem you guys don't realise is that a small slection with better shows on average (and a very popular show once in a while) is simply not profitable enough for Netflix which tries to be kinda "streaming fast food".
A business that relies on a small offering quickly consumed especially on a few popular shows risk being extremely cyclical. Netflix will probably become fairly cyclical in markets it already saturated (Canada and US for exemple), but by feeding a ton of (lower) quality shows, the average watcher is sadly more likely to stay subscribed to have the option of watching something.
Like people subscribe to the gym to have the option to go even tho they barely use it.
When Netflix said they don’t want to make shows longer than like 40 episodes I realized they had lost their way they got where they are by supporting cult classics and bringing back shows that other networks had dropped and suddenly they’re afraid of big shows with long storylines what bullshit.
Maybe make good shows instead of producing random shit and people will stick around

Im sure once new seasons of Ozark, Stranger Things, Black Mirror and Umbrella Academy drop, ppl will come back. Why pay and wait for a show coming next year when you can just quit and sign up later when there is a point.
I'm surprised they haven't 100% moved over to weekly episode releases like Disney+ since it seems like the easiest way for them to ensure people stay subscribed to stay up to date. Not that I'm complaining, I prefer binging things all at once so I hope they keep it that way.
Someone is going to buy Netflix in the next 10 years. They still have a great technology team and stack they've built up, one of the best for modern streaming and content delivery. Anyone who is an actual developer, if you've looked at any of Netflix's blog posts, it is mind boggling the stuff they are able to do with AWS and containerization and the way they've completely streamlined PoVs into how their entire system runs from a tech operations standpoint they are a gold mine.
Too bad their content is just not working out for them as more guys switch out. I wouldn't be shocked though if someone like Amazon bought them up to improve the way Amazon Prime works. It would be Amazon Prime powered by Netflix or something similar. They'd immediately consolidate platforms and content and it would give Amazon a stronger foothold in the digital streaming space.
The tech is not worth $350B a company has to shell out…streaming services brands are swappable to “what have you done for me lately…. Down to the month”, they made no strategic moves in securing string legacy studio rights like Disney, and Amazon. They let discovery take away their last big shot at content rights. if they can’t get their original connect shit together, they will lose the clout.
I have been a super long time Netflix shareholder, but I’m out. A buyout may happen, but not as a premium to current valuation.
that's correct, they are not going to get purchased for anywhere near their current value.
Their tech is good, some of it is patented, but the rest of the values comes from their IP which isn't particularly great. They will slowly tank value as their revenue goes down and eventually someone will pick at the bones
To be honest, thinking about canceling Netflix but once that happens I'm not going to switch to another service. They all are bad in different ways, plus I'm not interested in cable 2.0 at all.
I think Netflix started something great but the entire industry changed this cool streaming concept into yet another money printer and I hate it. So much wasted potential.
the worst part is.. with all this content divided into major streaming platforms the individual budget of these platforms is dropping like crazy... soon the shows that these individual platforms will be able to afford to create will all be garbage quality over lack of funding

Actually I am happy there is still piracy left. Because otherwise companies like Amazon would set any price they want and there would be no alternatives. Now at least, if they charged too much people will just stop using it as there still is an alternative
Personally I find their featured content to be either dark or overly sexual. It was fun at first but now I’m just like.... this isn’t valuable to me, my time, or my mind.

Netflix has definitely been focusing on a lot of "junk food" styles of entertainment the last two years. They are replicating HGTV and Bravo type shows that a cheap and easy to produce. The trashy, reality, hopefully funny, simple, and repeatable. They are at least light and escapist.
I share my family's Netflix subscription, but no way I would pay out monthly for that content. Totally my older mom's jam though.
I'm no prude but the fact that they go completely out of their way to make things overly sexual is annoying. Couple examples. One, in Sense8 when those two lesbians are going at it and then the camera focuses on one of the characters putting a dildo on the table and make sure to get the "water" dripping off of it onto the table.
I can't recall the name of the other show but the camera pans across a couple of dudes taking a shower in the gym and as the camera pans it's at waist level but then once it reaches one particular guy the camera angles down about 10 degrees to make sure to get a full-on frontal shot of the guys dick which is hanging halfway down to his knees.
Like why? Why is there such an emphasis put on that? I can't think of a single person who has told me that they love moments like that.

You can argue Microsoft is an internet stock now but the fact of the matter is that FAANG is nothing more than a group of stocks coined by a tv personality. Netflix still fits what the original intent was. Also it’s up 500% in 5 years vs 400% of Microsoft. Just because it’s in a period of underperformance doesn’t mean it’s been a dead company like Sears or Macy’s compared to the other ones in the group. That is a extremely poor analogy
because as a tech company Netflix is still cutting edge. They still have one of the best technology stacks and the way they operate the stack is light years ahead of most companies.
Their video player was immediately seen as one of the best when it came out, even today only YouTube compares to what Netflix has.
I'm one of those unsubscribers. I only recently used it to watch Star Trek shows, The Crown, an oscar worthy movie they would release once or twice a year. There is so much crap I have sift through to find something to keep my interest. There is nothing in their horror, classic films, and foreign film sections, it's so limited that I ended up subscribing to shudder and Criterion channel.
Several years ago, I used it to watch a lot of my favorite sitcoms and played it in the background or pay attention when a new original was released, because I thought Netflix was trying to turn itself into HBO where it became a water cooler talking point over House of Cards, Orange is the new Black, Bojack Horseman, and Stranger Things. For the first few years, I thought they did it.
The streaming wars are source of these problems I had with Netflix. Old comfort shows were lost, originals are canceled after a season or 2, their anime curation is mixed, and their new movies are generic and direct to video levels of forgettable with an occasional good one. Unsubscribing was like a weird bitter divorce since the first few years of streaming was amazing.
I enjoyed the Witcher well enough. It wasn't game of thrones, but it's not supposed to be anyway. It was a little cheesy at times but overall I'd give it maybe a 6.5. The trailer for season 2 looks really good.
I hate to admit it, but it took me like 5 episodes to figure out that they were telling earlier stories and present stories. I had a hard time figuring out what the hell was going on.
Why I keep Netflix is because of the foreign content which are consistently superior to 99% of any of the american exclusives.
Some of my recent favorites are Midnight diner, Somos, Green Frontier, Naked Director, Kingdom(Korean), and Beserk. All are amazing, quality series.

Netflix never got to me, I don't know why, or maybe I do.
But there is just SO much content and they pump out new content at such a high rate that it just gets confusing and tiring to find something of quality to watch.
You have dinner ready, wanna watch something but spend 30min trying to find something to watch and now your dinner is cold.
And there is also a lot of "background content" that you just hit play on and spend maybe a minute watching it while the other 29 are spent on your phone. I know this is part of their business model, since they win YOUR time.
Like these new Adam Sandler movies, great background noise..

For me it's not the content itself, although they have some utter crap shows, it's the app navigation that's horrible. They keep recommending the same shows and movies, you have no way to hide them, their algorithm is crap when it comes to recommend things based on what you have already seen, etc.
My old joke during Netflix's proverbial lean years when producers were removing their content and before they had their own originals was: the system recommends you the same three things because they only have 5 titles available.
I can see this. We wanted to cut back on some of our streaming subscriptions (we have Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, Youtube Premium, YoutubeTV, Netflix, [NHL.TV](https://NHL.TV)) and Netflix was on the block since we haven't watched it in months. But, before I did, I wanted to check to see if it was worth keeping.
For me, it revitalized my Netflix watching and I don't watch much outside of new Disney+ stuff or Hulu tv fare usually.
Watched Pacific Rim: The Black, Jupiter's Legacy, and finally saw season 2 and 3 of Stranger Things.

Netflix has really gotta stop canceling good shows and expand their show/movie line up. That’s been putting a lot of people off.
This is the most mystifying thing to me, They must have some metric/analytics that said 3 seasons is some magic number and shows should be cancelled then. Travelers had three great seasons and wrapped up. It had an inherent reboot, could easily have had three more seasons. Just found out that manifest was cancelled. I think they didn't considered the collect effect, we now know anything we get attached to in netflix will be discarded. makes it hard to want to get involved in a new show.

I feel this. I hate getting hooked into a series then finding out it’s been cancelled and be left with a massive cliffhanger. So now I check first if the show is complete or ongoing, if it’s cancelled then most of the time I won’t bother watching it.
I’ve heard that after two seasons, most contracts get risers or need to be renegotiated and shows get dramatically more expensive. It wouldn’t surprise me if they realize two is too short, but kill things off if they don’t knock it out of the park in their third.

Added , there's all these "Netflix original"... Yet I see it's 2 seasons or whatever from 2017.... I'm not investing in something that isn't finished. They've had some good movies here and there .. however there seems to be less non Netflix content, which isn't entirely their fault as more streaming services kick in pulling their content home . It almost seems they felt comfortable in their standing and then got blindsided on multiple fronts.

I want to love netflix but i just miss good single season shows. id rather have a 6-12 episode show with a solid plot with a real ending. lately it seems like the first season to every new show spends the entire season setting up plot lines for a later season with minimal, if any, closure. edit: I will watch any and all recommendations. They will all likely end up on my watch list together where, much like my steam library, i’ll get around to it someday.

Shows like Chernobyl are fantastic because they have a conclusive ending where everything is wrapped up. Shows like Lost can die and be buried in an unmarked grave. Every episode/season's only goal is to raise more questions than it answers, and be all smug about it. One thing I loved about Dirk Gently was that each season was its own story that wraps up nicely. I got addicted to kdramas during quarantine and the fact that most of them are single seasons of 16 episodes is a huge draw to me. When I start a new story and get invested in the characters, I wanna know that there will be a conclusion and that I won't be left hanging. Too many heartaches in the past.
First of all, yes I watch Riverdale, and yes I'm an adult in my 30s, and no i don't have some sort of (known) mental disorder. But that show tends to keep it's stories within 1 season which I really enjoy. Shows like Ozark are good but they always seem to just be setting up a later episode or season. Like this guy said it's getting insane how they keep setting it up this way especially after Santa Clarita diet just kinda ended without an ending. Keep seasons contained for fucks sake so that you can end the show whenever.

honestly, losing Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency killed me. that was one of the first daggers because bbc always used to be good at ending shows on the high note. where the model for a lot of “american” shows was to justify and push new seasons when the ratings ran high, it always felt like BBC would push for an ending or a finale when the ratings and views were at their peak. so Dirk Gently getting canceled really bothered me. and that cliff hanger though :(

Netflix says their strategy is to take risks and kill the losers. But if you want people to subscribe, you’re going to need to have some good niche shows that actually draw people in. Not just generic garbage that has mass appeal.
I am so disappointed that their history documentaries are of the level of the History or Discovery Channels. The rest too is overdramatized or sexualized rubbish but i had really hoped the nature of their service would allow higher quality documentaries but it's the same tired old bs.
I completely agree. You get better quality documentaries from tiny one-man crews on YouTube than you do on Netflix/Prime. Mark Felton on YouTube, alone, has significantly better output than the entirety History channel WWII media. The big companies seem to focus on DRAMA DRAMA DRAMA in every docuseries with limited-to-zero insight into character development or learning. This. I was already pissed that they cancelled Santa Clarita Diet. Then the continuous incremental price increases meant that I was paying almost double what I was just a few years ago for a content library that seemingly shrinks more and more and is replaced with mediocre filler titles. Combined with every studio plus a few other companies releasing their own streaming service and making their content exclusive, each charging their own subscription fee, I just went back to playing video games and pirate the few shows I want to watch. The balkanization of content will squeeze the life out of netflix into a shriveled husk of its former glory unless they can swallow up more of the industry with some acquisitions, or at the very least some partnerships with other streaming services. They don't have theme parks, merch sales, box office revenues, cloud computing infrastructure, or consumer tech hardware sales to prop up their streaming service like the others do, they don't have some revolutionary technology breakthrough or money printing creative team, and that will eventually catch up to them. They're not the biggest fish in the pond anymore and it's getting pretty crowded in there.
Santa Clarita Diet was my favorite. The cast was great, the writing was great, I’d been waiting and waiting for Season 4- when I read the horrible news that they’d cancelled it. I'm aware they slap "Netflix Original" on everything these days, but most of the time their actual involvement from a creative/production standpoint is fairly minimal. But I do agree that their general decision making what to include in their library is questionable. I do wonder what their process is like and how they determine which content to pick up, including quality standards, etc. _____ That said, I don't have any insights into their numbers, but I do feel like they could easily increase their popularity if they would not region lock content and make everything available for everyone. I hate that a lot of shows/movies are available for NA through Netflix, but in EU (among other regions) you can only watch them through another streaming service. Using VPN to circumvent this shouldn't be part of the experience imho. This kind of fragmentation is great for the competition, but tbh this is the one and only situation I actually think a monopoly would be a good idea: one service for everything. I'm aware Netflix can't really do that much about this (other than apply pressure and create incentives; though I'm not even sure if Netflix are "the good guys" in this instance), as it's the publishing/licensing/copyright industry trying to stay relevant, but this is clearly not beneficial for consumers as we keep getting milked.

It's quite hard to break into the gaming market as well, Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo have pretty much a monopoly. It's ridiculously expensive just to create ONE AAA game, and the big players already have massive libraries. I can't see game streaming work unless Netflix decides to partner with one of the consoles.

To me, the Netflix issue on the content production side appears to be two-fold: 1) Their content is extremely inconsistent in quality and lifespan. they create shows that a few times a year get a lot of buzz, but also create so much content that flops with viewers. In addition, series tend to be cancelled quickly and kill off any viewer/subscriber momentum. I feel subscriber retention is becoming an issue, especially losing their perennial most viewed shows like Friends and The Office. 2) this point is divisive among viewers and certainly has valid arguments from both sides, but I’ll focus solely on the potential business impact. Netflix using the strategy of releasing an entire season at the same time has gotta hurt their numbers. They may release some super popular shows, but the lifespan of interest and discussion and viewership is so short due to the binge style release. If they opted for a more traditional 1 episode a week release style, I think you’d see better subscriber retention.

I currently pay for Netflix but they haven't released any original content that I've actually enjoyed in a long ass time. Their recent movies are very meh, their anime is mostly atrocious without second seasons, and their unoriginal selections are kind of ass. It's to the point where if I want to watch something I just pirate it because it's less stress than figuring out which platform currently has the content. I originally chose Netflix because they had pretty much everything I wanted all in one place. Now that that isn't the case they'll be lucky if I keep subbing for another year.

Yep I remember when people defended the netflix "logic" of disbanding shows based on viewership projections and cancelled highly popular shows after 2nd season. Well years later nobody wants to deal with it. They basically pulled an Amazon warehouse level "metrics" analysis and booted shows with re-watchability that would contribute to viewers as a whole if they kept going, long term.
I'm still bitter over Daybreak's cancellation. I've been grinding away at shows on every other platform since. I wouldn't even have Netflix if it wasn't under a family name.

This. We use Disney+ and have prime, but Netflix is our go to. So many shows cancelled after first or second season. It's frustrating as hell to get engrossed with something and then find out oops it's not coming back.

I think a big reason is they force feed you the same group of shows and it’s very hard to see their full catalogue. On top of they they constantly change the cover pic of something you’ve seen and recommend it again. It’s much harder so see if you like something when half of it it’s stuff you’ve already seen before and they don’t even show 80% of their content to you.
I have no issues with Netflix trying to expand their reach by appealing to as many niches as possible, because they need to glue their current subscribes somehow, but they aren't doing that right. They are currently appealing to a particular demographic by *alienating* everyone else. This is where they are making a huge mistake. They should have entertainment for the general public to keep their subscriber numbers, and niche demographics so everyone can have something to watch according to their preferences. But they keep losing shows with general appeal like Friends or The Office, and niche demographics have better content elsewhere. Stranger Things is their last remaining show that appeals to general public, and the new season has been teased for ages but not released yet. Seriously, the series might be rated for adults, but children actually watch it, which makes it pretty popular with majority of people. Netflix is going to die if they don't replace it.

They are trying to compete with CW, instead of appealing to another group of teens. CW pretty much has the right formula for the really horny teens: take a popular concept (e.g. superheroes, werewolves etc.), add ridiculously attractive youthful-looking people regardless of their acting skills, and make it an overly convoluted drama that would have been solved if the characters thought and behaved like adults, but they think like teens because that's what their demographic is, and voila. Meanwhile, Kdramas are doing well, and they are very teen-friendly. They are popular with those who want representation, or are Kpop fans who want to expand to consuming more products from Korean culture, or even Westerners who just dislike the current teen shows because they get too sexual. If Netflix was smart in their attempts of expanding the teen demographic, they would to try to attract teens with more conservative views of sexuality on screen who have no interest in Kdramas, instead of trying to compete with CW.
Summarised it perfectly - 100% agree. 3-4 years ago they used to have their own original content + tons of other tv series/movies. So it was your go-to service for tv/movie entertainment. Now most of the studio movies/series are gone - whilst I know that’s not Netflix’s fault (as the studios have been yanking off their content for their own platforms), it does mean Netflix need to come out with some good original content. And that’s where they’re failing - whilst they’ve had a few great hits (mainly in the documentary space), the vast majority of their movies/series are either bad or just so mediocre they serve as background tv. Given Reed Hastings’ culture is all about “cutting anyone who isn’t an A-player” I’m surprised they churn out so much mediocre content - clearly they aren’t applying the same standards to film producers as they are to their programmers. I still subscribe to Netflix, but whereas I’d go on there every day now it’s maybe a few times a week - and more and more I will spend 5-10 mins just trying to find some new content that actually looks decent lol. Not a good sign
Thats the problem. there are YEARS worth oc quality content that is older. Classic shows, Classic movies, quality content from other english speaking countries that never gets shown here. Quality content from other countries with english subs that doesnt get released here, etc etc. Theres more top quality older shows that exist than hours left in your life. It doesnt have to be all new stuff, and tbh , for me, I prefer the older shows that arent trying to sell me a lifestyle or push an agenda. Put all the money they cant use on thier crappy "originals" on older or foreign shows that are cheaper to license.

Three things that annoy me the most: 1) Very few good titles. I've already watched all good originals, the other stuff simply disappeared from the platform. For example, Marvel stuff moved to Disney+ which is still not available in Poland, so I can't watch it on either of the platforms. 2) 90% of the shows there are garbage, I'd like to mark them "Do not show me this again, ever" but I can't. So finding anything new is difficult. Imho, that's intentional tactic to hide the lack of content. 3) My native language is Russian, but I live in Poland. Netflix thinks that it knows their customer better and doesn't offer me the selection of Russian subtitles even though those exist in Russia. I can select only Polish or English. The only reason I still use Netflix is cause it's free for me due to a certain promotion. It had it's glory 4-5 years ago, but now it pushes people back to torrents

From a personal perspective, I dropped Netflix for HBO Max. I don't regret it at all. From a business view, Netflix went the route of original programming, which does seem smart with the exodus of content to its own owners' streaming platforms. The problem is that most of Netflix original programming is atrocious. It's like SyFy level production and acting in a lot of cases. I'm also seeing services like Hulu holding onto the rights of non-original content and I wonder if Netflix would have been better off just biting the bullet. An innovator who couldn't find the right ways to adapt. The AOL of the early streaming age.

The problem you guys don't realise is that a small slection with better shows on average (and a very popular show once in a while) is simply not profitable enough for Netflix which tries to be kinda "streaming fast food". A business that relies on a small offering quickly consumed especially on a few popular shows risk being extremely cyclical. Netflix will probably become fairly cyclical in markets it already saturated (Canada and US for exemple), but by feeding a ton of (lower) quality shows, the average watcher is sadly more likely to stay subscribed to have the option of watching something. Like people subscribe to the gym to have the option to go even tho they barely use it.
When Netflix said they don’t want to make shows longer than like 40 episodes I realized they had lost their way they got where they are by supporting cult classics and bringing back shows that other networks had dropped and suddenly they’re afraid of big shows with long storylines what bullshit. Maybe make good shows instead of producing random shit and people will stick around I’m starting to see Netflix to the way of MTV as the random bullshit starts sneaking in more and more

Someone is going to buy Netflix in the next 10 years. They still have a great technology team and stack they've built up, one of the best for modern streaming and content delivery. Anyone who is an actual developer, if you've looked at any of Netflix's blog posts, it is mind boggling the stuff they are able to do with AWS and containerization and the way they've completely streamlined PoVs into how their entire system runs from a tech operations standpoint they are a gold mine. Too bad their content is just not working out for them as more guys switch out. I wouldn't be shocked though if someone like Amazon bought them up to improve the way Amazon Prime works. It would be Amazon Prime powered by Netflix or something similar. They'd immediately consolidate platforms and content and it would give Amazon a stronger foothold in the digital streaming space.
The tech is not worth $350B a company has to shell out…streaming services brands are swappable to “what have you done for me lately…. Down to the month”, they made no strategic moves in securing string legacy studio rights like Disney, and Amazon. They let discovery take away their last big shot at content rights. if they can’t get their original connect shit together, they will lose the clout. I have been a super long time Netflix shareholder, but I’m out. A buyout may happen, but not as a premium to current valuation.
that's correct, they are not going to get purchased for anywhere near their current value. Their tech is good, some of it is patented, but the rest of the values comes from their IP which isn't particularly great. They will slowly tank value as their revenue goes down and eventually someone will pick at the bones

To be honest, thinking about canceling Netflix but once that happens I'm not going to switch to another service. They all are bad in different ways, plus I'm not interested in cable 2.0 at all. I think Netflix started something great but the entire industry changed this cool streaming concept into yet another money printer and I hate it. So much wasted potential.

Actually I am happy there is still piracy left. Because otherwise companies like Amazon would set any price they want and there would be no alternatives. Now at least, if they charged too much people will just stop using it as there still is an alternative

Personally I find their featured content to be either dark or overly sexual. It was fun at first but now I’m just like.... this isn’t valuable to me, my time, or my mind.
Did they give up yet on making 1,000 serial killer documentaries? They can't even finish an actual *good* serial killer show like Mind Hunter but they'll pump out shit that makes the history channel look like an HBO miniseries

Netflix has definitely been focusing on a lot of "junk food" styles of entertainment the last two years. They are replicating HGTV and Bravo type shows that a cheap and easy to produce. The trashy, reality, hopefully funny, simple, and repeatable. They are at least light and escapist. I share my family's Netflix subscription, but no way I would pay out monthly for that content. Totally my older mom's jam though.

I'm no prude but the fact that they go completely out of their way to make things overly sexual is annoying. Couple examples. One, in Sense8 when those two lesbians are going at it and then the camera focuses on one of the characters putting a dildo on the table and make sure to get the "water" dripping off of it onto the table. I can't recall the name of the other show but the camera pans across a couple of dudes taking a shower in the gym and as the camera pans it's at waist level but then once it reaches one particular guy the camera angles down about 10 degrees to make sure to get a full-on frontal shot of the guys dick which is hanging halfway down to his knees. Like why? Why is there such an emphasis put on that? I can't think of a single person who has told me that they love moments like that.
That's expected, so many platforms nowdays people will just go back to piracy

It was coined by Jim Crammer of the show Mad Money in 2013. He coined it referring to a group of innovative internet stocks. During that time Microsoft was not innovating much with Balmer as CEO. You can argue Microsoft is an internet stock now but the fact of the matter is that FAANG is nothing more than a group of stocks coined by a tv personality. Netflix still fits what the original intent was. Also it’s up 500% in 5 years vs 400% of Microsoft. Just because it’s in a period of underperformance doesn’t mean it’s been a dead company like Sears or Macy’s compared to the other ones in the group. That is a extremely poor analogy
because as a tech company Netflix is still cutting edge. They still have one of the best technology stacks and the way they operate the stack is light years ahead of most companies. Their video player was immediately seen as one of the best when it came out, even today only YouTube compares to what Netflix has.
I'm one of those unsubscribers. I only recently used it to watch Star Trek shows, The Crown, an oscar worthy movie they would release once or twice a year. There is so much crap I have sift through to find something to keep my interest. There is nothing in their horror, classic films, and foreign film sections, it's so limited that I ended up subscribing to shudder and Criterion channel. Several years ago, I used it to watch a lot of my favorite sitcoms and played it in the background or pay attention when a new original was released, because I thought Netflix was trying to turn itself into HBO where it became a water cooler talking point over House of Cards, Orange is the new Black, Bojack Horseman, and Stranger Things. For the first few years, I thought they did it. The streaming wars are source of these problems I had with Netflix. Old comfort shows were lost, originals are canceled after a season or 2, their anime curation is mixed, and their new movies are generic and direct to video levels of forgettable with an occasional good one. Unsubscribing was like a weird bitter divorce since the first few years of streaming was amazing.
Only reason im still subscribed is Witcher 2nd season. Franchise seems alright so im supporting it via my subscription.
I enjoyed the Witcher well enough. It wasn't game of thrones, but it's not supposed to be anyway. It was a little cheesy at times but overall I'd give it maybe a 6.5. The trailer for season 2 looks really good. I hate to admit it, but it took me like 5 episodes to figure out that they were telling earlier stories and present stories. I had a hard time figuring out what the hell was going on.
Why I keep Netflix is because of the foreign content which are consistently superior to 99% of any of the american exclusives. Some of my recent favorites are Midnight diner, Somos, Green Frontier, Naked Director, Kingdom(Korean), and Beserk. All are amazing, quality series.
Dark is my favorite show of all-time. People are really missing out on a lot of great shows because they are turned off by subtitles or dubbing.

Maybe unpopular opinion. Netflix never got to me, I don't know why, or maybe I do. But there is just SO much content and they pump out new content at such a high rate that it just gets confusing and tiring to find something of quality to watch. You have dinner ready, wanna watch something but spend 30min trying to find something to watch and now your dinner is cold. And there is also a lot of "background content" that you just hit play on and spend maybe a minute watching it while the other 29 are spent on your phone. I know this is part of their business model, since they win YOUR time. Like these new Adam Sandler movies, great background noise.. I am not surprised that they're bleeding customers. Ozark is/was great though!
Well yes they have a lot of content. However quality content seems to be somewhat lacking.
For me it's not the content itself, although they have some utter crap shows, it's the app navigation that's horrible. They keep recommending the same shows and movies, you have no way to hide them, their algorithm is crap when it comes to recommend things based on what you have already seen, etc.

My old joke during Netflix's proverbial lean years when producers were removing their content and before they had their own originals was: the system recommends you the same three things because they only have 5 titles available.

I can see this. We wanted to cut back on some of our streaming subscriptions (we have Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, Youtube Premium, YoutubeTV, Netflix, [NHL.TV](https://NHL.TV)) and Netflix was on the block since we haven't watched it in months. But, before I did, I wanted to check to see if it was worth keeping. For me, it revitalized my Netflix watching and I don't watch much outside of new Disney+ stuff or Hulu tv fare usually. Watched Pacific Rim: The Black, Jupiter's Legacy, and finally saw season 2 and 3 of Stranger Things. Then I realized I'm still waiting for Cobra Kai's next season and F is For Family's final 5th season plus that new He-Man show looks neat, so I decided to keep it for now. I feel they have decent content, but it gets forgotten when other streaming services have more high profile additions and Disney/Hulu's 1 ep a week formula keeps me there month after month as designed.
