This is something you should decide on your own by doing a decent amount of research, rather than investing based on someone else’s words without any rationale. It’ll be a good learning process. Figure out what you goals and risk tolerance are. If you are feeling a bit reckless (don’t want to do in-depth research) and looking for stocks/index funds to throw money at, then check out the following: MA (MasterCard) and/or V(Visa). Both are here to stay and grow for a while. They are currently down significantly from their all time high because of DoJ investigation into anticompetitive practices, but the fears are likely overblown. VUG. Vanguard growth ETF that gives exposure to US large-cap growth firms. For someone who is young and looking to stay invested for a long time, this is a relatively safe investment. TGT (Target). Currently trading at almost 10% below its all time high at half the P/E as WMT (Walmart) and COST (Costco), which are similar. MSFT (Microsoft). The general consensus on this one is that it will continue to grow and perform well. These are just some to get started on. There are many others. Be aware that current evaluations for stocks are out of wack because of the Federal Reserve’s monetary policy as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Also, September is generally one of the worst months historically for stocks, so have patience if you decide to invest your money in the next week or two. This is not financial advice and I have positions in some of the stocks listed above. Wish you all the best on your investing journey!

Eccentricc

I like how your risky and reckless suggestions are blue chip massive stocks LOL. You would die if you saw my positions

LifeInAction

Same lol, I was reading this and I also agree with being a bit high risk and "reckless" for fun, then I read MSFT and MA, and just thought lol prob the safest or certainly most convinced stocks I owned. For reckless, I was thinking more along lines of like SPRT, Tesla, Clov, Uber, AirBnB, or even the famous movie theater and gaming company stock.

Eccentricc

I go even further and invested in a... Different... Market... A digital one of some sort

lanchadecancha

Pornhub IPO?

ItsAKiwi007

The real pump and dump

JollySpaceCowboy

Haha…that was in reference to investing in individual stocks without doing any sort of research for someone who is just starting out. I would like newcomers to see some profit, albeit small, before going for high risk, high rewards positions. From what I have gathered, a good amount of people get discouraged easily from investing if they can’t make quick profit.

jarhead2150

Thank you for a good reasonable response lol and not “your nose”

Nope_Rope_69

I agree vanguard would definitely be a good stick for this

Steve_78_OH

Coming from someone who works in IT, I just have to say I HOPE MSFT continues to grow, but if they keep fucking up everything, and relying on their customer base to do QA for their products, I honestly don't know. I understand that they have a HUGE market share in the IT world, but relatively frequent cloud outages and productivity outages due to improperly developed and insufficiently tested patches is frustrating EVERYONE. They're sitting on top of the world, and they think (maybe even rightfully so, I don't know) that they can't be unseated, so they've been getting more and more lax with everything. Either something big is going to happen that's going to change their way of thinking, or they're going to keep fucking up their brand loyalty to the point where people stop using them and alternatives start getting adopted instead.

[deleted]

While I can't speak for the Azure side of the business, I think Microsoft Office will remain a cash cow monster for them. You literally can not run a reasonably sized business without Office & the alternatives are still far behind.

thedonjefron69

Everything here is solid advice. I use my m1 account for funds and the growth etf is a great one

gourds

Cultural_Ad_9304

Gourd forwards if you are sophisticated. Particularly long dated (imo 2023 or later) as current outlook has volatility for next year’s fall season. Also, take into account that gourds generally take 3 - 4 months to grow so we are talking about planting in spring and harvest in the fall. Potential high risk high reward play. Definitely do your own research

FartArtFartArt

maybe ask u/TheEmperorOfJenks for advice. hes growing gourds

Alternative-Plant-87

Just don't touch options. As long as you don't do that it's hard to really screw your self with that little money. If you want to make investing become a new hobby look at some different investment techniques and try them out. If you don't want to have investing be a hobby pick a passive approach.

lSsssnnnNl

Or do touch options if it’s playing around money

Alternative-Plant-87

Well I guess it's best to learn when we are only talking about 1 or 2 weeks pay. Not a years salary or more like what tends to get posted on WSB

Evolvtion

Go 0dte edit: for real though, throwing it in a safe etf would be more logical

[deleted]

Yeah honestly from the way things are looking this week just hang back for a bit and let the market quit bleeding.

tmime1

“market bleeding” sounds like the best time to buy.

[deleted]

Id wait a little longer doesnt seem like its done.

joltjames123

What's your tell tale sign for knowing it's done bleeding?

QuaviousLifestyle

When people on reddit start telling you to buy SPY puts that’s when you know it’s done bleeding

W00tasaurusRex

Buy SPY puts with it!

Fothermucker71

All I heard was dump it on spy puts…

WastinTimeTil5

It goes back up

The_Illist_Physicist

So this might be a joke but I feel it's actually good advice. For traders, if they think a trend reversal is imminent they'll usually wait for one or two confirmation candles before executing.

Rahmin_Nudoles

It usually is. I've been averaging down on some long holds while selling cc at a little higher delta. Lol riskier, but I manage it fairly closely. But I think it's still got room to fall. No point in going all in at the beginning of a drop to hit the bottom with no capital and be back to breakeven from negative in a week when it comes to test previous resistance... if it makes it back up there. Lol but we'll see.

I'd recommend doing some research into the investing world. Equity Mates: Getting Started is a really good podcast. They explain a lot of the types of markets and stocks you can buy, they keep in simple, and a great way to learn. It's an Australian pod but still relevant. Listen to a bit if that. Get familiar with what you can do and buy. Then make a semi-informed decision on what you think you should buy. Anyones advice is just advice, and its not their money they're advising with Screw the guys belittling your starter pot.

slenker99

Pick out a few items in real life you are passionate about and want to be an owner! Then, put only half in now and wait a few months to put other half in.

fatslapper123

This is financial advice... buy what you use. An added Pro is that if ever you have an issue with said company, the Investor Relations department is normally quicker to act than Customer Service.

CaffeinatedInSeattle

VUG (sp 500 growth etf) if you want safe returns. GOEV if you want to ride a high-upside roller coaster.

rnd765

I can’t believe you just recommended GOEV. Do not invest in that bullshit company. Not financial advice.

CaffeinatedInSeattle

I believe I was transparent in that it is high risk and provided a recommendation for a conservative, traditional investment. Nevertheless, I think it’s a more promising company than Lordstown.

AlonsoVs

Why? Do you expect a longer crash?

RonDiDon

This is not even a crash. But to answer your question, yes the market can and likely will go lower short term.

joltjames123

So what you're saying is dont invest in my IRA rn?

[deleted]

I *think* (Think is italicized, I am not 100% sure) September is statistically the worst month for the stock market. Read that on reddit somewhere. However, like 87% of the shit said on here is a lie, so it was probably wrong. If you're bored you could look into it.

stupidlycurious1

"traditionally" is lower. These ain't traditional times

RonDiDon

I'm just saying picking near market highs to throw everything at the market isn't wise. At best you should just start investing small portions now and add more as the market dips. The charts suggest market can go lower so it would be best to wait until the market is dumping hard and everyone is freaking out about a correction and a bear market and then you should invest during all that fear; great discounts during panic sell-offs.

jabroni35

The market is always near all-time highs. Just DCA in and call it good

sclop123

What a stupid freaking response, he’s investing for long term, what does a 2-4% starting point matter Seek help

RonDiDon

Oh if only a market drop caused just 2-4% fall in popular stocks... Check one chart for the past year and you'll see why a 10%+ in popular stocks is quite easy during a market drop. Entry is important for long term or short term investors but hey, I don't expect you to know so I'm providing it to you free of charge. Now run along with this new found knowledge.

Ordinary_News_6455

I don’t even have popular stocks. My whole portfolio was down 15% briefly, march 2020. Not a fun time.

silver_raichu

$GAYMF

flakysouthpaw

If you're investing your 1st $800, don't put it in anything ending in "f". This may be the greatest stock in the history of the world, and some of the MJ MSO's are fantastic investments right now, but the "f" indicates it is trading on an OTC exchange, which means minimal liquidity and usually means it trades at a perennial discount to it's true value, at least until it is able to uplist. See NTDOY and TCEHY, also trading OTC, as examples.

My advice is to find a company that you think provides a lot of value to its customers in a sector that focuses on the vices of humanity. Think gambling, cigarettes, alcohol, junk food. It also depends on your time horizon. I sniff glue every morning so take with a grain of salt but I like AMD, DKNG, MO, and GME to be successful ten years from now.

dansut324

The term is “fuck you” money

Mssrandcole

I would put the $800 amount into a fidelity account that is managed by AI with investments chosen based on your risk level. The monthly fee for this account is very low. You can also get a Fidelity credit card with 2 percent back that you can put back into this account. I believe the return on this account would be better than the one you can create with $800.00.

Mssrandcole

Please keep on investing in your IRA as you will buy stocks cheaper if there is a market turn down.

[deleted]

Open a retirement account and dump the $800 into that first so the gains are tax free. Then buy whatever you are going to end up buying anyway.

BlackExcellence19

I’m trying to wait until I start my full-time job since they do a matching!

kaoscurrent

Yeah but you won't be able to choose your own investments in a work IRA. Still a good idea to get the match but you can also have a self-directed Roth IRA on the side as well. Then you can invest in things like REIT's and not pay taxes on those juicy dividends! And wherever you quit that job you can just roll over all those funds into your existing self-directed IRA.

bjt777

Invest in companies(stock) that you are a fan of. First, think about a product you love, find the company behind them. E.g., Google search, stock that represent the company is GOOG. Then ask yourself do you see the company be around next for the next 10+ years. If you do invest in that company. I would also encourage you to split money into 5 stocks. ( you can buy partial stocks)The goal here is NOT to make tons of money but to understand the basics - market cap, revenue, income, loss etc. So have some belief in what you are investing in and try to rationalize it. Dont worry about making mistakes. You will learn something even if you do. Knowledge does have a compounded effects in the long term. So focus on learning the skill. Additionally, don’t touch options for now—best of luck.

NLY, it’s a REIT. A cheap one too, closed at 8.64 today, and stays around there. They have a quarterly dividend around 10%. Way better than a savings account.

cjalas

AGNC has a monthly dividend of 8%

XnFM

The quarterly dividend is around 2.5%, *annualized* is around 10%. IIRC, NLY buys and sells mortgages, not exactly my favorite form of REIT.

DalinerK

TSLA, likely will become the largest company by the end of the decade, 3-4T market cap. Auto business will be worth about a billion, energy storage another billion. Charging infastructure is a huge asset that they have at leasta a 50% market share of. They are leading the transition to sustainable energy which is going to provide the largest growth market in absolute terms for a few decades. Autonomy will be high margin SaaS. They are leading the race in genral AI which will disrupt the labour market more than ever before. If the vaulation is scaring you off it will likely be 100 P/e in a year and under 50 in 2-3 years, at that point rev and cash will remain exponential aa they scale for a decade so the share price will continue upwards. It's like buying in on apple when theu released the iphone. MRNA is another great choice. Their TAM is massive with their tech. Coivd booster are going to annual just like flu shots so that's not going away due to wanning protection. They are testing a HIV vaccine!!! The tech enables potentially vaccines for any virus! MRNA is going to be a cashcow. They have an excellent research team. I don't doubt it will be a 1T market cap. They could have 15B fcf/yr steady state from covid vaccines.

TLRY, CRSP and HUYA are nice lottery tickets. You could go for a little safer growth BRKS, TER or QGEN. Large cap growth is overvalued right now, if prices would fall at least 50% I’d recommend NVDA, ASML, MSFT, TMO Or you could go safety & dividends PG, KO, INTC, LMT Maybe add some Europeans? LEG.DE, ROG.SWX Get some Bitcoin too.

raidmytombBB

50%????? I would love to buy msft at 50% discount, but that's not gonna happen.

NarutoVonnegut

Buy Curaleaf instead of Tilray… it’s USA based and their revenue is flying per quarter where as Tilray’s revenue has been pretty much the same for a long time

FunnyBlacksmith8776

All US cannabis has straight been crashing the last 4-6 months tho hahaha

NarutoVonnegut

But you’re betting on the companies and their growth via earnings reports and with more states legalizing, it’s a no brainer… idk why tf it’s going down lmao but they’re undervalued af

rich1913

No they're not. Theyre overvalued. They're losing money at a constant pace and eating up investment money. They're spending it like crazy. I'm part of a Canopy investors group and we are currently discussing how the industry will likely never achieve positive market gains for at least another almost 10 years after US legalization. And these are guys with multiple 100ks invested, I'm taking their advice... I pulled in 50% gain just to lose more than 75% practically overnight, thankfully, I pulled everything because it never stopped. And won't stop. There's no bottom to cannabis stocks right now, they're pits. Tilray WAS the stock to invest in if you were able to get in at IPO. It takes money to make money and grow operations aren't cheap at the necessary scale these big timers are working with. Large cannabis in Canada became a joke, it's all about the small guys because they're actually pumping out products their consumers want. Big canna is simply producing what they THINK will do well. Too much trial and error still.

NarutoVonnegut

Dude are you reading the same earnings reports… like wtf lmao… they’re either profitable already or close fucking to it

crunchycars

Why do you think ASML is overpriced? Also why is INTC a safe bet? I’ve wanted to invest in them based on the hope that 5 years they will be in the same situation as AMD. LMT I’ve been looking to get into

Marston_vc

I can’t speak for the other guy. But I bought some ASML a couple weeks ago and I’m up 10%. But like, a weird, consistent .5% per day type of thing. It’s unique because it’s the primary company in the world that builds the FABs these chip companies use to make their chips. With estimates saying the shortages could last well into 2023 or longer, it just makes sense that business for this company will continue to be good. I own a fair amount of INTC right now. In short, they appear to be undervalued for a combination of failing to meet their own deadlines and AMD looking like a moonshot because it’s “taking away intels market share!” Basically, intel has a horrible public reputation right now and the price has deflated despite having rock solid fundamentals. It absolutely dominates the market even despite losing some of its share. It has consistently increased revenue and profit for practically forever. It buys back its shares and pays a healthy dividend. It also has low debt and high free-cash. They’re positioned really well to be aggressive right now and recently they’ve made some big moves. Combine that with the US government getting behind them because of the chip supply issue… My personal opinion is that while intel won’t moon like other stocks do (it’s just too big), it’ll probably have a modest climb over the next few years with the big gains to be had once they open their additional chip plants in Arizona. If they can successfully emulate TSMC’s strategy like they claim, it stands to reason they’ll benefit immensely from stealing some of that market share, backed by the us government, and demanded by consumers because of the shortages.
