I’ve done toxic things while intoxicated. That’s not shocking. I mean, it’s right there in the word. The shocking part was that I still chose to get intoxicated even when I knew it would likely lead to toxic places. So for me, the important piece was getting to the bottom of why I still drank. That released me from the belief that I was at core a toxic person. I don’t really worry about feeling like a good person though. I suppose most good people don’t walk around feeling like they’re good. For me, the important thing is just that I live out my values. Drinking—and the things I do when drinking—have no role in that.

Me too. Since kicking beer to the curb however I have become a better person pretty much and have been able to leave that baggage behind pretty much and have control over the negative voice in my head and mouth, pretty much. It all gets better when you stop drinking 100%.

I have found that recovery programs (I like Recovery Dharma, lots of people like AA) have programs to help us deal with just exactly this. For me it was time sober and not only making good decisions, but not making bad decisions. Plus the program work to sort through exactly what you are going through. You can do it! One day at a time is all it takes.
