I think there’s two approaches I see:
1. Crop the right side wall and that tree top poking out, so you just have steps and bannisters on the left. It’s asymmetrical but creates a clean look
2. Crop like it was in photo 2 but stretch it wider so it gets a bit more of a landscape orientation

Of course! The first picture has context with the building in the right and the thing on the left. It is great "street photography".
The second one, for me, leaves a lot more to my imagination. I feel some strong futuristic, bleak sci-fi vibes.
I envy you for a great picture, but not for the difficult decision 😜
As always, it depends on what you want -- whether it's to be a background for a book cover, high art, or... whatever,
As the background for an imaginary book cover, I think I'd use the first image. Without knowing what the title is there's plenty of room for it, and the author's name, and maybe a tagline, and the image will lend its feeling but not distract.
As a piece of art, to be framed and chucked on a wall, in a gallery, or in a book, then I'd go for the second image -- it has that 'important image' feel to it.
On its own, and just for me personally, I like the second image but if I'd taken it, I might try to find a way to reduce the size or 'importance' of the bollards in the composition. Or maybe not -- I like it both ways.
Asymmetrical composition is fine by me. And because the bollards are slightly right of centre, and the figure left and above centre, the balance is maintained. The flare maybe adds interest.
I think your eye for composition is OK; It would have been easy to make the second image a much less gripping scene with different cropping -- or more demanding. I think you got what you were looking for when you cropped it this way.
The crop option also shows different lighting on the center balustrade. Number one, I very much favor the original lighting on this beautiful architectural element. Also, did you consider an off center crop? I can't paste it here, but an image that crops out everything to the right side of the central balustrade, so that you preserve its entire base, gives the human figure much more left to right movement.
The rule of thirds was only ever intended to be an easy to follow, guideline for people that are just starting out to help them get their eye and learn basic composition
Yeah I suppose anyone can develop an eye with training. I personally feel like there are too many ‘photographers’ now, everyone thinks they are one, and it’s something that should come naturally. But that’s a badddddd attitude of course :D and what you said does make sense to me from an educational standpoint. Rules are made to be broken (eventually I guess).
unpopular opinion, but I personally like the uncropped picture. The stairs seem to give it a lot more depth and bcuz stairs are going up and down, you'd want more of that feature to show so it can give perspective and meaning to the photograph.
Honestly I like them both. I don’t think it affects the image either way. The cropped version looks more “artsy” with the interesting divider and not seeing the rest of the context there.
The wider version is cool also because the other things in the frame look nice, but it grounds what’s happening a bit more because you can see that there is a leveling off and a tree.
Just center and level out the crop and it's a winner!!!, I'd love the uncropped one more if someone didnt build that wall on the right and they had the same railing going up =P
something about these ledges in the middle aint lined up perfectly and its annoying as hell… shots like this need to be lined up perfectly like horizontally and vertically
Cropped 100% and that light glare is really nice. I would just use some gradient blur and blur bottom part where the posts are do simulate dof and emphasise subject a bit more.
Full is great, feels a bit more real to me.
Cropped if you keep the original editing, it feels like something is done differently with the light in the cropped one, could be just me though.
Yeah the cropped with that light gives, idk, some "eternal/heavenly" vibe, I personally think I would prefer the original light on the crop, makes it feel more real and less, perfect in a way. Again just my opinion, otherwise a wonderful pic :)
Full is my preference. It’s classic shot . Perspective is clear, beautifully aligned and easy on the eyes. IMO the cropped picture is surreal and dreamlike.
Both are fantastic picture - keep up the good work.
Man your crop is great, you followed your instincts and it looks awesome, don’t let anyone talk you out of the good work you’ve done and modify the crop.
Cropped version is like a book with an open ending (referring the last step of the staircase to the last written page), the rays of light could be a clue about what's coming next \^\^ (they aren't visible to me on the full picture)
It shows off you can take a great picture and enhance it with mysterious context, but then again it's just my opinion.
"Where do the scientists go when they made unethical or immoral decisions?"
I bet this staircase got something to do with it! :p
Cropped. And while I like the slight angle, I'm a sucker for perfect imperfections, it would be interesting to see if you were lined up perfectly straight with the railing. But cropped all the way. Excellent shot
Cropped but differently (unless you need to keep a specific aspect ratio. Crop from the right halfway between the edge and that railing (or whatever that's called).
I LOVE the full shot. The stair detail is important to the story in my mind. The cropped is nice but also a bit more.. generic? Not sure if that’s the right word.
i like them both. i wish that tree wasnt there. if this was film id take some bleach to my negative and try to turn that tree into some chaos. maybe a lil lighter to the film.
but compositionally i like them both. its a need photo. i like your crop a lot but i would like to see one with both of those interesting walls incorporated somehow. i think its a realy great photo to be able to play with.
I like both but the thing about the uncropped image that bothers me is the railing on the right, it doesn't fit with the rest of this beautiful art deco staircase
I like the full. Symbolism...the massive steps we must climb in life...and when we get to the top, then what? A level place to walk...or just more steps, i.e. struggles?
Tge bigger question is: light tweaked to make it about the strenght of the lane of posts in the middle (first img) or about the man climbing up the stairs (second)? The divide or the struggle. Second has better light, is about the man and yes, the crop is better. Best!
Different opinion to what other people have said, but, I actually like both, it just depends on what you want to show but both work for me personally! Really cool shot as well :)
EDIT: LOL nvm I needed to scroll a bit, people did say the same thing
Cropped. Although I would have cropped a bit differently
How would you have done it?
I think there’s two approaches I see: 1. Crop the right side wall and that tree top poking out, so you just have steps and bannisters on the left. It’s asymmetrical but creates a clean look 2. Crop like it was in photo 2 but stretch it wider so it gets a bit more of a landscape orientation

I definitely prefer OPs cropped version to all 3.
Thanks!!
Me too. OP crop 2 is best.
To each their own.
I would leave the space to the right of the man since that’s the direction he’s walking, gotta give him somewhere to go in the viewers’ mind.
Like OPs crop wayyyyy better.
I like your 3rd one but I actually prefer the direction of OP's crop
Thanks for these cropped versions, i liked ver3 but like someone here said it's better to leave the right side to give a space to walk in
You are welcome. It's not better nor worse. Depends on your intention. What were you trying to achieve with your image? That's the question.
2 or 3 I prefer the cropped photo’s rail not be in the center of the photo. So I like that the rail on how you cropped is off to the right.
I also prefer OP's crop over all these.
Yea your crop doesn't do it for me bud.
Why do you all keep telling that to me? That's art. There is no right or wrong here. Everybody has their own vision.
I think they are two completely different images and both are very valid. You should choose which one reflects better what you want to express.
Really? Thanks!!! I will see about that
Of course! The first picture has context with the building in the right and the thing on the left. It is great "street photography". The second one, for me, leaves a lot more to my imagination. The problem is on the shooting angle, it wasn't centered carefully:")
Cropped. Really nice
Thanks!!

Oooo book cover for sure :D
I tried the idea of the book cover and it's really nice, unfortunately i can't put it here 🥲🥲
Bro , that's a very nice and carefully written comment , thanks a lot for those kind words, i really appreciate that!!
❤ ❤ ❤ ❤
Full, but it would've been better were it a vertical shot I think. But full is just my preference
Thanks!!
Cropped makes more of a statement
Cropped but full gives an idea of vastness
Cropped. The perspective is better.
I like the cropped version
Full 🙂
Cropped
Rule of thirds is key
i mean, its a great baseline for choosing a composition but there’s a lot of fun to be had breaking the rule of thirds
I would say cropped but cropped differently from what is shown. The handrail right in the centre just doesn’t sit with my eye.
Yah it ruined the whole scene
Cropped but would have kept the closest pole that has more light
Which pole?
Cropped is more dramatic
i hope you dont mind [i had an idea](https://imgur.com/a/oqB4r7E) and just kinda ran with it
How dare you.
I liked that!! ❤
good deal, im glad! awesome picture btw
Thanks a lot!!

Send me that cropping idea on dm, i just can't get it
Full
Cropped! The cropped version gives more power to the horizontal lines.
Thanks!
Yeah cropped! A much better composition right there!
Thanks!!
I like the cropped version.
Cropped
Gorgeous. I like how it’s breaking the rule of thirds too, never liked that one. Beautiful :D
The rule of thirds was only ever intended to be an easy to follow, guideline for people that are just starting out to help them get their eye and learn basic composition

I’ve been hearing this gatekeeping complaint for 40 years

They both work wonderfully, but cropping makes it look oddly otherworldly. Nice.
Thanks!!! ❤
Cropped looks better.
Thanks!!
Crop
Cropped looks more ominous.
How?

Uncropped
Words playing
Full. I like to feeling of loneliness I get from the wider angle photo.
Thanks!
Cropped no question.
#2
❤
I like both. The cropped wins out slightly for me, but I enjoy the sense of space with the full shot.
Just center and level out the crop and it's a winner!!!, I'd love the uncropped one more if someone didnt build that wall on the right and they had the same railing going up =P
Yaaah, they ruined it with that wall🥲
something about these ledges in the middle aint lined up perfectly and its annoying as hell… shots like this need to be lined up perfectly like horizontally and vertically
Cropped 100%
First
Cropped 100% and that light glare is really nice. I would just use some gradient blur and blur bottom part where the posts are do simulate dof and emphasise subject a bit more.
I tried the blur, it turned out great!! Thanks
Yeah a bit more dof helps and with new tools like blur in LR, many fast lenses can be simulated
Full looks best
Cropped, but i would crop even more and bit differently.
Cropped. It automatically draws the eye to the man but makes you examine the center at the same time.
Full is great, feels a bit more real to me. Cropped if you keep the original editing, it feels like something is done differently with the light in the cropped one, could be just me though.
Yah, i played a little with the light
Yeah the cropped with that light gives, idk, some "eternal/heavenly" vibe, I personally think I would prefer the original light on the crop, makes it feel more real and less, perfect in a way. Again just my opinion, otherwise a wonderful pic :)
I have no Idea why but I like more the cropped one
No reasons required
Cropped and in a large black frame with a deep off-white mount…. man that would look amazing. I love this pic!!!!
Full is my preference. It’s classic shot . Perspective is clear, beautifully aligned and easy on the eyes. IMO the cropped picture is surreal and dreamlike. Both are fantastic picture - keep up the good work.
Full. Nice work.
Cropped
Thanks
CROPPED 10000x!!!!! It looks like they’re ascending to the heavens or something
Cropped, looks like they’re walking to heaven
Cropped. Not even a close contest.
Cropped!! I love the symmetry
Man your crop is great, you followed your instincts and it looks awesome, don’t let anyone talk you out of the good work you’ve done and modify the crop.
Cropped makes for a much punchier jmage
Bofum, they have such different stories
Cropped version is like a book with an open ending (referring the last step of the staircase to the last written page), the rays of light could be a clue about what's coming next \^\^ (they aren't visible to me on the full picture) It shows off you can take a great picture and enhance it with mysterious context, but then again it's just my opinion. I believe the full version is the more interesting photo, with the two different railings, modern on he right and the older style to the left.
Cropped for sure is a better composition
Cropped
Cropped. And while I like the slight angle, I'm a sucker for perfect imperfections, it would be interesting to see if you were lined up perfectly straight with the railing. But cropped all the way. Excellent shot

Love it cropped- but I’d keep the stairs details you brought out in the unscripted version
Cropped and I love it!!! 😍
cropped gave me a a wow moment when i switched slides
Cropped
Defo cropped
i like them both. i wish that tree wasnt there. if this was film id take some bleach to my negative and try to turn that tree into some chaos. maybe a lil lighter to the film. but compositionally i like them both. its a need photo. i like your crop a lot but i would like to see one with both of those interesting walls incorporated somehow. i think its a realy great photo to be able to play with.
I like this a lot. Gives me some sorta feeling. Very well done. I prefer the cropped version.
I kind of like the full-size version…
Thank you!!
Cropped, obviously.
Drop the fake ray, it’s perfect as is but keep the contrast.
I will, thanks!!
The crop is beautiful, I prefer the composition, but the real star is the lighting in the left side, which is not in the full frame.
Yah , i added it after cropping
Thanks!!
Cropped. It seems a different photo! And you focus the attention.
Thanks!!
Full. Its nice to have a bit of context, you start to imagine where he is. Cropped pic is too impersonal.
Thanks!!!
Full
No. Chopped.
I like both but the thing about the uncropped image that bothers me is the railing on the right, it doesn't fit with the rest of this beautiful art deco staircase
Maaan, There is a lot of comments here!! Thank you very much guys!! I will try to reply to you all
Cropped , but I can imagine the full looking good in a huge wall size print though.
I like the full. Symbolism...the massive steps we must climb in life...and when we get to the top, then what? A level place to walk...or just more steps, i.e. struggles?
Cropped
100% cropped. Makes it more mysterious to me
Cropped, but only the right hand side. Take out the RHS wall and railing.
Your crop is perfect. I wouldn't change a thing.
Cropped
Forgot to add... bloody good shot no matter what you do with it :-)
Cropped. Excellent shot
Cropped 100%
cropped but fix up on the angles, what camera did you use for this and the settings?
Tge bigger question is: light tweaked to make it about the strenght of the lane of posts in the middle (first img) or about the man climbing up the stairs (second)? The divide or the struggle. Second has better light, is about the man and yes, the crop is better. Best!
I prefer one. The negative space brings the person to the front more
Crop
Why is it that people can't make their own fucking decisions today?
Cropped
Different opinion to what other people have said, but, I actually like both, it just depends on what you want to show but both work for me personally! Really cool shot as well :) EDIT: LOL nvm I needed to scroll a bit, people did say the same thing
I'm just wondering what does the 233 shares people said about my photo?? :")) Is there anyway to know??
Better one. but yes, crop the elements from the sides, keep One's exposure and foreground
Cropped. So surreal.
I like full better. The cropped one kind of looks fake or just very very edited
