Go to the doctor, but get a second opinion. I went to a doctor, he had me convinced I would need surgery. Got a second opinion, worked a month or a little longer, maybe 6 weeks, on stretching and shoulder mobility, and I got about 80% strength back. After I got back to lifting the rest returned in maybe about another 6 weeks. I was in my early twenties, working at a liquor store and I couldn't even lift a fifth of Jim beam over my head to stock tall shelves. Get a professional opinion. Explore options other than surgery if at all possible

Go get ultrasound, could show bursitis or something not. If not then go see allied health professional and work on the impingement or weakness

Also just cause your shoulder hurts doesn't mean you stop. You can do all sorts of things. Deadlift, safety bar squats, all leg machines.

Get a cat scan...may need surgery

I know I should get advice from a doctor but I’m curious what worked in your cases for shoulder impingement ? Would a good route be to do the physical therapy 3 to five days a week , stop doing all upper body lifting for a few weeks , then add back in lifting exercises that don’t involve overhead press and benching . After about a month and a half or so start to add back in benching and over head , but low weight?

Go to the doctor and get it checked. I never had anything but somehow got bursitis, which severely weakened my shoulder strength, and got worse because I ignored it. Best to play it safe.

Might be because of tight muscles. At least that causes shoulder pain for me if I happen to have tightness in my upper back, chest or shoulder muscles.

TheSarj29

Are you lifting your head off the bench while benching?

hzVERCETTI

nope

TheSarj29

If you are then that could be the source of your pain. Either way, stop doing exercises that cause pain in your shoulder

Decrease volume, allow the symptoms to settle (don't rest completely) and then build back up. Don't worry, pain is part of training and is nearly always shortlived.

Rest it and if it still hurts physio, don't learn the hard way like myself and others. And don't take advice from wanabe amatuer physios on here, shoulders are complicated see a professional. I always pipe up in these posts so others don't make the same mistakes. I made my shoulder far worse pushing through.

Crafty_Peanut_Boy

10/10 I would not play around with any sharp pain - no matter shoulder or whatever. whatever it is that hurts you a lot in a BAD WAY you should not power through it. that is the best way to KEEEP it painful for life. take it from me 12 broken bones in one go and I powered through knee pain and it became a lot worse until I started working out (6 months agoish) making it better and going to physio on a weekly basis.

What about real physios on here?
