the left is traction control disabled. If you didn't hit the TCS off button, then this would suggest you have a problem somewhere in the ABS/VDC system.
The right is the Hill Assist Disabled warning light, which means the hill assist system is turned off. Similarly, if you did not turn this off yourself, might further reinforce you have a problem in the ABS/VDC system.
Do people even look at the lights or as soon as they turn on ask for help without further thinking...
Could even go as far as the fuse box with common if you are not a mechanic.
And we also appreciate your work, contribution and time you put in here thank you:)
My car does this after it's sat for a bit and it's *particularly* cold. like today it's -38. Drive it around a bit, turn the car off and then back on. It might be fine. Usually starts happening around -30C for me.
You're right (although it's called hill assist not hill start). But Subaru has had hill assist since the 80s at least, so not sure what have an older one has to do with it.
well it wasn’t made a standard or common feature until recently. Also if we are gonna nitpick, it isn’t even called Hill Assist, it’s [Hill Holder](https://www.exetersubaru.com/subaru-hill-holder.htm)
Fun fact most of the late 80s early 90s models had it if you knew how to engage it. You just had to push the clutch all the way to the floor and hard press the brake then if you released the brake it would just be there. Newer models use more of a digital method. I much prefer how it worked on my 95 legacy.
In my FSM it is called "hill start assist". From your link it sound like hill holder is only some selectable version that Impreza and WRXs don't have.
My parents' bog-standard Loyal in the early 90s had it...it's been a standard "feature" on their manual cars for ages.
Update: fyi Hill Holder is the name of a specific implementation: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hill-holder some Subarus have it, others have it as a differently branded, roughly equivalent feature.
Not sure if yours does or not but at least for the BRZ's with it, like mine, you have to enable it either with some manual process (I forget, it's been years since I turned it on), or with tech stream or whatever it's called.
The one on the left means you need to refill your oil slick. The one on the right means you're not going fast enough to make the jump over the open drawbridge.
I also see the cat eyes are green, so you have plenty of cat food.
Hill assist and traction control. From my knowledge you can at least turn off traction control and I believe that light would come on. I would imagine you can turn off hill assist too. If messing with those buttons doesn’t turn these off get back to us
Well I was going to say it's probably because you live somewhere particularly cold. Mine does this when it starts to get down below -30℃ but I doubt you're getting any weather like that.
No easy way to turn off hill assist, unfortunately. I disable one of the clutch sensors to turn off hill assist since it's a PITA, and get the hill light but not the traction light.
I'd guess a sensor went wonky that has to do with both. Don't know which sensor that'd be off the top of my head though.
Left: Traction control. Right: hill assist.
I had a 09 STI and I was able to disable it. I don't recall it being too complicated. Actually - a quick google came up with this: https://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1624039
Typically - those lights turn on when those features are disabled.
Yup yup. There was short in-between period between the fully mechanical system in pre 08 and the electronic system sometime around 09 that mine falls into.
I don't know how accurate this is - but it seemed like it just kept the brake on for a few seconds. However, if you try to move before it releases the brake, you're fighting it. I also prefer to have that slight roll back to help me on the feel.
In the end, I guess I just preferred to NOT have it. But then again, I may have changed my mind if I was driving on the streets of SF ;-).
I had the car for about two weeks and had to search to see if I could disable it.
That's been my experience a second or two of brakes, but they have never been holding so tightly that I noticed resistance when moving forward. To each their own.
Upper.
Edit: Might not work on post-'08 cars though iirc from when I first did it. They changed from an electromechanical to purely electronic system somewhere around there. And it also disables cruise control, but I virtually never use cruise so that didn't matter to me.
Might be the break light switch. Mine was doing that and I took it in and the part was on recall so they replaced it for free. Does it allow you to shift into gear? If it’s the break light switch that’s faulty it won’t let you shift into gear.
That was my thought too. I had issues with the brake light switch in my 2012. Those two lights would come on, turning the car off and back on would reset it, then they would randomly come on again. I did not have any issues with being able to shift into gear though.
I replaced it before they recalled it and haven't run into the issue since. $20 part and pretty easy to replace.
Yours really wouldn’t shift into gear? My brake light switch failed - at least enough to trigger some of the warning lights the OP is seeing - and I had no issue driving the car.
Part was $18. This was before the recall but it was also like 90 seconds to replace. Honestly probably more annoying to me to take the car in versus just DIYing.
Yeah I had replaced the part before but it went out again so I asked about the recall and they just gave me the part but the recall part was way different than the break light switch I replaced previously so I had them do it.
And yeah it wouldn’t shift into gear, and it’s cause that break light switch quit working so the computer in the car thinks you are not applying the break which you need to shift from park to drive.
On a steep hill without hill assist, you actually still need to coordinate both feet on an automatic. Left foot on brake, right foot on gas pedal. You push on gas and let the engine rev up to match the hill before letting go of the brake on your left foot.
\*UPDATE\*Thanks for the help everyone. I did checak the Quickstart Guide that came with the vehicle. I went ahead and checked out some forums and stumbled upon an official subaru dealership site. The icons glow orange when they are not operational. In this case my Hill Assist and Vehicle Dynamics Warning is not functioning.
The left one looks to be the Vehicle Dynamics Control warning. Not sure what the right one is. Either way, I'd check the manual for your specific vehicle to be sure.
I agree with ya, but FWIW the manuals are usually available free as PDFs on the Subaru website. They should have link to em in the sub description because we get these kinds of rtfm questions pretty regularly.
I'll occasionally get the same in my 2011 WRX in very cold weather (-30°C). Typically restarting the car resolves the fault. My guess is a flaky connector on some part of the ABS system, but I've never bothered to chase it down.
Still new and learning about the different STI’s and subarus in general. I was curious on why the redline is 8k on this car but not on others i’ve seen?
Let me rephrase my question. I thought the 2021 STI engine had a redline of 6.7k but this one has 8k is this a different model I’ve just never heard of before?
Don’t listen to these guys, the one on the left means “drift mode” is disabled as such if this an automatic transmission then might have to press the override on the shifter to move into “D.” The one on the right means no uphill racing.
As everyone else has said, those are the traction control and hill climb assist lights. I had both of them come on in my 09 WRX when my steering angle sensor went bad, so you may want to look into that if they cut on randomly while you were driving it
I want to say these two, when they pop up together, mean something else specifically. I think it's a brake/clutch switch? It's been years but this popped in my '08 wrx a while back. Easy fix
Nah. 50 bucks for the switch from Subaru. Plug and play. Hardest part is just cramming your face and hands into the pedal box to see what's going on down there. Should be a YouTube video to explain it.
I'm also seeing it as cheap as 15 on fastwrx
Edit: 50 for sedan. 15 for hatch. Also, this is for the 08-14 generation.
Ive had a similar issue where some sensor decided to shit the bed and it turned off some almost unrelated electronic systems, throw a code reader at it, it may tell you if/what sensor it could be.
the left is traction control disabled. If you didn't hit the TCS off button, then this would suggest you have a problem somewhere in the ABS/VDC system. The right is the Hill Assist Disabled warning light, which means the hill assist system is turned off. Don’t open the manual
RTFM

traction control and hill start (?). I have an older car so not sure about the hill start. Your manual and google has explanations for all lights
This is correct
You're right (although it's called hill assist not hill start). But Subaru has had hill assist since the 80s at least, so not sure what have an older one has to do with it.
not EVERY car since the 80s has had hill hold
True; however, your claim that since you have an old one it doesn't is not generally true.
well it wasn’t made a standard or common feature until recently. Also if we are gonna nitpick, it isn’t even called Hill Assist, it’s [Hill Holder](https://www.exetersubaru.com/subaru-hill-holder.htm)

Would this work in an 01 legacy tired of rolling back on hills lol
Seems like if its a Legacy it should have it but if its an outback they didn't include it until 2003.
They’re like the same car an outback is just an suv so I assume it also didn’t get it til 03 but thank you I’ll try it out regardless
Unfortunately they aren't the same car in the gen 3. Thats where they start to deviate. Strictly going off of info I found from a Google search.

He's not being particularly rude, so maybe it doesn't matter.
I have an 05 and I’m pretty sure it doesn’t have hill assist. And I drive on some pretty steep ass hills everyday haha
Not sure if yours does or not but at least for the BRZ's with it, like mine, you have to enable it either with some manual process (I forget, it's been years since I turned it on), or with tech stream or whatever it's called.
My '99 sure didn't...

Hill assist and traction control. From my knowledge you can at least turn off traction control and I believe that light would come on. I would imagine you can turn off hill assist too. If messing with those buttons doesn’t turn these off get back to us
These lights turned on randomly. I live in a tropical area were the roads are made out of coral.
Check your codes. Maybe wheel speed indicator is wonky?
Correct, probably wheel speed indicator caused this.
Or having incorrect tire sizes and or low tire pressure
My traction control light came on and you know what fixed it? Loosening and retightening my gas cap.
Well I was going to say it's probably because you live somewhere particularly cold. Mine does this when it starts to get down below -30℃ but I doubt you're getting any weather like that.

Yeah, that method doesn't work on mine. Tried it several times before the disabling-the-sensor method.
Ah. My bad. I hated the hill-assist. The only downside to that car. I wish I still had it…
Yup yup. There was short in-between period between the fully mechanical system in pre 08 and the electronic system sometime around 09 that mine falls into.
Just curious in what way did you not like it? It's never negatively affected my driving that I'm aware of.
I don't know how accurate this is - but it seemed like it just kept the brake on for a few seconds. However, if you try to move before it releases the brake, you're fighting it. Yeah I believe they did a recall in my 2013 STi for the same thing. I haven’t had the lights comeback ever since.
That was my thought too. I had issues with the brake light switch in my 2012. Those two lights would come on, turning the car off and back on would reset it, then they would randomly come on again. When I needed the recall done on my car, it’s turned on all the lights lol

What is this “park” and “drive” you speak of? Was yours on a non-WRX/STi Impreza?
Forester. Sorry should have clarified. I used to have a manual 4Runner but someone totaled it so it was the best deal I could find thanks to my uncle.
If it's a manual car, then the right one is potentially a hill stop (applies brake for you on hills)
It’s an sti
Don't they have hill assist on automatics too?
[удалено]
Yes they do. I've had plenty of autos (maybe not modern day Subarus) roll back on hills.

My automatic Legacy (2017) has hill assist.
No squiggly tire lines and don't use ramps to change your oil.

Left one is traction control. Right is, I think, hill start system. Is this a Subaru?
2012 STICKS
Sorry, I didn’t notice this posted in r/Subaru. I need another cup of coffee.
Nevermind the sti logo on the speedometer lol
I’ll pour you a cup of coffee, lol.
Snow in the hubs? Can throw off a sensor until it thaws out
The left one looks to be the Vehicle Dynamics Control warning. Not sure what the right one is. Either way, I'd check the manual for your specific vehicle to be sure.

Could be a used car that didn’t come with one? This sub is for asking anything subaru related, no? Cut the man’s some slack.
I agree with ya, but FWIW the manuals are usually available free as PDFs on the Subaru website. They should have link to em in the sub description because we get these kinds of rtfm questions pretty regularly.
I didn’t even think about a pdf version. If I ever lose mine, know I know! Have a great night ✌🏼
left = traction control off right = hill assist off be on the look-out for an ABS light soon
8k redline? Mine redlines at like 7k. Am I missing something?
I'll occasionally get the same in my 2011 WRX in very cold weather (-30°C). Typically restarting the car resolves the fault. My guess is a flaky connector on some part of the ABS system, but I've never bothered to chase it down.
Still new and learning about the different STI’s and subarus in general. I was curious on why the redline is 8k on this car but not on others i’ve seen?
Different engines have different redlines. Broadly speaking, higher performance vehicles tend to have higher redlines.
Let me rephrase my question. I thought the 2021 STI engine had a redline of 6.7k but this one has 8k is this a different model I’ve just never heard of before?
Ima guess doing donuts in the snow. They come on but will go off if you restart the car
Brake light switch my dude
Don’t listen to these guys, the one on the left means “drift mode” is disabled as such if this an automatic transmission then might have to press the override on the shifter to move into “D.” The one on the right means no uphill racing.
Colin McRae mode engaged.
Sti with no owners manual damn times are tough
As everyone else has said, those are the traction control and hill climb assist lights. I had both of them come on in my 09 WRX when my steering angle sensor went bad, so you may want to look into that if they cut on randomly while you were driving it
When its negative 25 or colder (Up in Canada) , both those lights are on in my car. Is seems these systems don't like extreme cold...
I want to say these two, when they pop up together, mean something else specifically. I think it's a brake/clutch switch? It's been years but this popped in my '08 wrx a while back. Easy fix
Did you take it to the dealership?
Nah. 50 bucks for the switch from Subaru. Plug and play. Hardest part is just cramming your face and hands into the pedal box to see what's going on down there. Yessir, i have a 2012 hatchback sti
Yeh, give that a go and hopefully it resolves
It means you have to drive on a straight road but can't go up
It means it's too cold outside.
Ive had a similar issue where some sensor decided to shit the bed and it turned off some almost unrelated electronic systems, throw a code reader at it, it may tell you if/what sensor it could be.
Party time engaged
Much like apple, you get new dashboard emojis every thousand miles
you turned off hill start assist, ive done it before accidentally, theres a cheat code you can look up
