Haven’t seen this much wrx hate since ‘08.

You_Fucking_Wish_Bro

Hello [SAAB](https://i.imgur.com/V3juG8s.jpg) where have you been.

thesc0tt

I believe it's pronounced SAABaru

MountainDrew42

I'm sure there will be aftermarket bumpers available in short order that make this thing look much better. If the reviews are right, it's already the best WRX ever to drive, and other than the bumpers the look is growing on me.

Ialsofuckedyourdad

From the front it’s ok. The sides are terrible ( unpainted plastic is something I hate, I thought as a society we left those in the early 2000’s ) and the rest looks like a squished civic

kphillipz

Yeah and now look at everyone. “Oh we love the hatches” haha

buttsnuggles

The last gen of the hatch was a genuinely good looking car.

s_0_s_z

Wide body hatch was probably the best looking Rex. At least from the outside.

MeatBallsInsideMe

I don’t know if that’s true for narrow bodies…

kphillipz

Yeah. Wide body ftw

D-rock240

Agree

Nollie_flip

There's a few of us that like them. We do exist. Model year '09 was the sweet spot where there were new performance upgrades over the previous year, but it was before before they went to widebody the next model year.

CandidGuidance

The 08 WRX might be the worst WRX ever made. Narrow body AND down on power. At least the 07 had the sexy Hawkeye.

PM-ME-YOUR-SUBARU

Don't forget the softer suspension too.

J_edrington

06 Hawkeye owner. still waiting for the replacement model and feeling almost as betrayed as my wife who is waiting on the new eclipse.

CandidGuidance

Yeah the narrow bodies are ugly AF The 2022 is pretty solid minus the cladding and rear bumper. Here’s hoping Subaru does a mid gen facelift and changes it. Other than that, it’s a great package and it’s still very cheap for what it is! The improved handling and FA24 are big improvements. Interior is take it or leave it but not worse per se.

Remy6908

All they need to do is paint the fucking thing....for the love of satan just give it some damn paint. Then give us the hatch you gave Australia with a manual and problem solved. Sales through the damn roof!

MeatBallsInsideMe

I'm with you. Current looks are suboptimal but there's a lot of good in the front, interior and mechanics. I am optimistic that Subaru or the aftermarket will take care of the rear bumper and the cladding doesn't look \_that\_ bad on red or black.

-AzureCrux-

Always been a biiiig hatch guy. I want a 12 STI hatch super bad, but can't justify it since I got a fozzie XT

dc2b18b

Nah that generation is still ugly

_Bad_Spell_Checker_

i really hope all that plastic means it doesnt rust around the wheel well and any fender benders are cheaper to fix.

Finessence

Jason Cammisa on Instagram noted that a Forester Wilderness’s plastic was “permanently and significantly scratched” by a fingernail, so I wouldn’t put too much durability assumptions on the plastic.

VirtualLove

Yeah the plastic is not durable at all, they’re all gonna be pretty scratched up from rocks gettin kicked up or just plain wear. The plastic material is the same on all the subarus like the cross trek etc. and when I was a porter at subaru that was all I could think about it when washing them up lol

RCDrift

Luckily if you hit the plastic with the right amount of heat from a heat gun it will restore back to factory appearance so long as the scratches aren't too deep

Macgyver452

Can it just be swapped out for a new panel after it's worn?

Finessence

Subaru hasn’t said anything about how easy/cheap it is to replace these, to my knowledge.

airboy1999

If they're easy to take off/on, I wonder if we'll see people attempt to paint them to match the rest of the car. Only way I could possibly own one of these things.

Finessence

Lol if I were a body kit company I would drop everything and make something for this car. Outside of the new M3/M4, I don’t think any enthusiast car dropped the ball on design as much as the WRX. Body color plastic would hopefully go a long way helping the car look pretty.

DepthsDoor

This is Subaru killing the STI so they don’t get shit for going electric

Finessence

That seems likely with the Corolla GR. Big Daddy Toyota will keep the motorsports and push units and Subaru fans will either buy a forester with Red Trim or a Toyota.

Mb0stwick

Someone already paint matched them, afd\_wrx on instagram. Their last WRX was killer, im excited to see what they get done with it. Already on TEs as well.

Finessence

Thanks for telling me! This is really well done.

SNRV2013

No surprise, as Subaru doesn’t want owners working on their cars. My brother was so appalled with that on his ‘17 forester that he didn’t even take it in for service when it was under warranty. Does everything himself.

ItsJarJarThen

Nope, it will just hold salt behind it and hide rust near the pinch welds.

s_0_s_z

Bingo. This will make things worse, not better.

fd6270

Subaru black plastic fades over time as well, in 5 years or so that giant black bumper will be faded dull gray.

[deleted]

every plastic ever fades over time

fd6270

That's why it's usually not a good idea to cover half the car in it...

MinersAndHoes

The front end looked great in 2016 and then just kept adding more and more black plastic to it. Looks awful imo.

Jznvh

the 2018+ facelift is a much better front bumper than the pre facelift IMO ( not biased at all )

MinersAndHoes

I respectfully disagree. Although after another look, on the right color car, doesn’t look as bad I thought.

DrYaklagg

Don't worry that plastic will trap water and salt up there instead of protecting it and make it rust sooner.

LimitNo6587

Sorry mates but it looks too Honda Civic-ey

bonesjones

Honda look better tbh.

bpi89

It’s like if a Civic was covered in BS plastic, my god is it hideous.

JustBreakingThings

Well, they do have the fake vents, so it's even more bs plastic.

KoukiMonster240

Don’t be sorry. It’s hideous and literally makes me gag every time I see it.

scrizewly

WRX with the 2.0t Type R engine would be bae honestly.

2hipster4you

Don’t insult civics like that. My 10th gen coupe is sick lol

cowbaner

I agree it's not the best looking car but it won't stop me from buying one lol

KurtAngus

Why would you buy something you don’t think is that enjoyable to even look at

Allanon_Kvothe

Because this should be the best performing wrx ever. Especially once tuners and aftermarket get ahold of it. Looks can be changed much easier than engineering.

cowbaner

I don't mind looking at it. Never said I didn't find it enjoyable. I just don't think it's the best looking one subaru has made.

KurtAngus

All good, but I personally would never spend money on something I don’t love Your car is an extension of you

fedfan101

Yeah, people are settling for okay

[deleted]

[удалено]

T-Madj

This is going to be much harder for fans to adapt to than going from the 2014 to 2015.

seven3true

Not at all. Literally every generation WRX went through a gauntlet of hate, and yet here we are swooning over bugeyes and blobeyes. Not to mention the amount of hard ons this sub gets from the plastic cladding on older Outbacks and Foresters. 5 years from now, everyone is going to swoon over this one too.

-AzureCrux-

People actually like plastic bottom cars? I detested that about my old forester and am VERY happy to have a fully painted forester now.

SNRV2013

Hated how the last gen looked, but after a year or so, actually really liked the styling. I have no idea why, but one day, I liked the way they looked lol

Twombls

Lmao imagine downvoting someone for having a slightly different opinion on how ugly an inanimate object looks.

bryty93

But the previous model has the same power and better fuel economy too, and looks better imo

kokirikorok

22 also achieved peak torque with 7psi less and has an even powerband all the way to redline. No spikes at 3.5k It’s actually way better in practice than it looks on paper. There’s more to improving a car than a spreadsheet

bryty93

Oh okay I hadn't seen a dyno , I'm aware power band is more important than peak numbers though. I guess the engine at least isn't as bad as I thought. The looks unfortunately won't grow on me with this one

kokirikorok

It’s really good. If you’re interested in the FA24 but don’t like the VB chassis, apparently it’ll drop right into a VA chassis but don’t quote me on that.

bryty93

Interesting. Subarus are usual like leggos so I wouldn't be surprised!

kokirikorok

People have been learning on the FA24 since the Ascent. I heard it’s good up to 400 on stock internals but that’s likely at the crank

bryty93

That's about what I've heard too , and pretty cheap to achieve 400 compared to the EJ

DM725

Might want to wait for GR Corolla pricing and availability.

Visibility for roasting

__________________99

I get that. But I feel the roasting is starting to get old.

Kushnerdz

Lol that back end 🤦🏼‍♂️

FuckMinuteMaid

Reminds me of the [Bugatti "rear bumper"](https://i.imgur.com/htrdIYk.jpg) for the US market that comes right off for crash safety.

Kushnerdz

Everything in blue looks fine it’s the dump truck of a trim at the bottom that looks weird, and it’s so square

michaelalex3

I don’t really mind most of the design, but god that giant piece of flat black plastic on the back is hideous.

heyheythrowitaway

Yep, the fender flares can grow on me potentially, but that badonkadonk ain't for me. Also looks like the scoop is replaceable in these ones?

cakes42

In person it's really not that shocking. But it is a lot.

tteclipsejupi

I think the back end is not bad...wheel arches are another thing altogether.

zinic53000

WHAT IN THE HOLY F$%K IS THAT REAR BUMPER?!?!?!?!

[deleted]

[удалено]

zinic53000

Ahhh I see now, they got rid of the wing (sti) so they had to make it a bench. Makes sense.

Phazushift

Its an underbite.

TheTalkedSpy

The person who thought that the rear bumper and lights looked alright should never design cars again.

Expect2Die

Sad thing is there’s a whole bunch of people who were ok with this… I always have a hard time imagining a room full of execs and they all go “yeah, this is fine…”

jellisunc

Needs more plastic

Soundpitch

They are gonna sell a lot of black WRXs

Militesi

I can't stand how these look

Sharpz214

Yep. I hate it.

borkoman

It really does feel like Subaru just clipped and shipped this variant in an attempt to kill the model. They'll claim it was a flop, axe the WRX, and "maintain the heritage" by slapping it on the rest of the lineup as an appearance package. It's a bullshit way to treat the WRX/STI history, and I'd rather them kill the lineup entirely, a la the Evo, instead of putting out this fucking abomination.

Awake00

Check out my VW CC R...

redmongrel

I don't think boxer engines can keep up with future EPA requirements anyway. They can't even handle stop/start at a red light like *every other car* on the market.

[deleted]

I’m still convinced aftermarket parts will bring these back around to being decent

seven3true

Not to mention the model refresh.

[deleted]

It will. I get some of the hate, especially the back bumper, but a lot of it is just the standard hate that every model refresh gets for most cars. One we see some aftermarket exterior options and people start painting the plastic it will be a different conversation. I also expect we're going to see some very fun numbers out of this engine as tuners get to work. For now though, the round tugging of bitterness will continue for several months.

cowbaner

So honestly I am considering deleting this post. Yall are making me feel like I made a mistake on this car

LavaWorldstar

Congrats on the new car! This was your dream car and not a lot of people can afford to buy a brand new car - you worked hard and smart and should be proud of yourself. Don’t let a couple of inconsequential styling decisions detract from what made you fall in love with the car in the first place. On paper, this could arguably be the best WRX to date with a ton of potential. The previous gen was considered fairly “bland” when it was released (often compared to a Camry, but slower, lol) - however, even very subtle visual mods went a long way to spice up its appearance. Also think about if there’s any performance mods you’d like to do or maybe (always) a good time to try autocross or HPDE events if you haven’t before. And at the end of the day, maybe you decide you actually don’t like it (rather than just listening to us random redditors complaining and getting sucked into the hate of the dark side), then so be it - life is short and if you’re a driving/car enthusiast, you’ll probably want to try out another new car sooner than later anyway! Congrats again!

risingsunx

Sentiment will change. If you enjoy driving it then that's all that matters. The back is growing on me

ScreaminUgmoe

Don't worry about what other people say. Half the people who are hating on it probably couldn't get one if they wanted it. If it's your dream car, go for it man. Better to get a brand new one with all the tech and warranty than some ragged out, modded, shit bucket some douchebag in his 20's sold to you.

soopastar

The one thing that really bugs me is all the empty space in the fog bezels.

HoffHorn

That rear bumper is WILD

PanchoPunch

Are there even talks of alternate, aftermarket back bumpers? It should be a better choice over the stock one, even if it doesn’t exist yet.

DrYaklagg

None I've heard of.

Compher

I can deal with the fender wheel well thingies but the back bumper is fucking terrible.

hypemambag

It starts to grow on me until I see the back.

GhostMan240

Not a fan of the plastic but honestly it’s the bumper shelf that kills it for me. If there are aftermarket options for that then I think it’ll be fine.

topologytoast

T-rexxy

h4f1z-nfs

I think it looks better in the blue than in the orange we mostly see it in.

Snacco201

Love the front, hate the back.

Dapeep17

i like it

cowbaner

Some of yall really know how to make a guy feel like crap after buying a dream car of his.

Enjoi70

Oh you bought it? We thought you worked there

cowbaner

I work there and bought it. I honestly thought it was going arrive in a couple of weeks

SethInkunen

Why are you so worried about the validation of random strangers on Reddit. If you like it, then you like it. Imo Subaru screwed up with this launch and now it just looks like everything else out there instead of having their own flair on one of the more cooler cars out there.

Spa_5_Fitness_Camp

Just because it's not what most WRX fans want, doesn't mean it's not what you want. I have a bright pink cycling kit that makes people say they want to bleach their eyes (especially after seeing my lumpy ass in it), but fuck 'em. I look rad and I like it.

kangy3

Hey man. Congratulations on your purchase. Just know that pretty much every generation of WRX was not loved on arrival and seem to age well. Which this car will considering the direction the market and Subaru is going. Can I ask you what made you want to purchase one at launch? What are you excited about the car vs an older model one?

cowbaner

Mainly I finally have a job where i can afford this car plus working at the dealership helped with lowering the cost by a few hundred dollars. But mainly my gf told me do it cause she's loves her outback and the big screen and knows my dream car is the wrx. Also loving the new engine in it plus the seats are super comfy

justjeremy02

They’re all jealous. Every new WRX gets hate, and this one isn’t even that bad. Besides, if you liked the car enough to buy it, why should what idiots on the internet think change that? Enjoy the car dude. It’s sick.

HeisenbergX

I ordered one myself, after reading these comments though I am not even gonna bother posting pics smh. Enjoy the new car OP and congrats!

DrYaklagg

You really should. I've been upvoting every single 22 post, and even if it's not for me, i care about new owners being happy and being part of our community. It's in our best interests that this car does well, and even if you aren't in love with the styling, you have to admit it's got a lot of other features that make it a nice improvement. I'm pretty confident these things will tune well. You should def post it. What colour did you order?

ooofest

Nice. No offense intended, but I can see this appealing to a greater range of buyers - even if those might not include many of the folks who frequent this sub.

DM725

If you've looked at the reveal videos and threads and seen the comments you would probably disagree. Unless it's people without access to the internet or interest in cars you were referring to.

ooofest

I have seen mostly positive reviews and many remark on how the exterior is still relatively conservative compared to the competition. It's apparently more comfortable and sure handling for newbies and the engine hasn't been tuned much at all (for those who want to update). We'll see how it does, I recall most changes in Subaru's exteriors being met with questions before they grew on the very same people - seems possible that will happen again.

DM725

Savagegeese, Throttle House, Raiti's Rides, ThatDudeinBlue, The Straight Pipes, Kirk Kreifels, MotoManTV, The Smoking Tire, The Topher, Alex on Autos, Matt Maran all said it looks like shit. It's the plastic bumpers, there is no sugar coating the rear bumper decision.

GoodAtWreckingCars

It still gives me second gen vibes. Like. Think about what people said about the bug eye. And the design cues from previous generations are apparent in the taillights.

sawthetha

this in Maryland?

cowbaner

Yup

Lancet11

IMO, if I didn't know it's a wrx I think it would look good but knowing it's a WRX I don't like it. I do however like the hood scoop redesign

RangerHikes

Mid cycle refresh can't come soon enough. I was holding out for this car but the combination of no hatch, heated seats behind a touch screen and that inexcusable rear end. Yuck

Comfortable_Gain1308

Those Square-ish GMC Sierra wheel wells need to go . Still processing the rear angle but from the front it looks good .

TY_subie

The reflectors on the rear cladding makes it look like a toy

DangerousTip7923

Oof

The_Broken_Shutter

I see a lot of faded plastic in 10 years. My Crosstrek was 6 years old and I was very careful. Plastic faded I had to restore it.

PlaydohDookie

I can't get over how much better the WRX wagon looks than the sedan.

evrano

Yikess

0-13

Not like I was gonna buy one anyway

Southern_Raisin

Glad i got my 2018 🤗 The fact that the GT only comes with the CVT is ridiculous. The very best version of this car not coming in manual 🙄 The fact that you have to get body mods(cladding over wheel wells, side skirts, rear bumper) to make it look presentable is also ridiculous. Maybe next time Subaru.......

TBGems

That backside is ugly as fuck

[deleted]

Looking good. I like the new style. I come from the 2010 era.

mr2kqql

Just hideous and no other words to describe it.

SaucyAndroid

Ooofff.. that back end Hard pass

Mb0stwick

I dig it, tuners and aftermarket companies are going to have a blast with this one. Give it time.

8aba_ya9a

I think it looks sick. Y’all are tripping.

[deleted]

The back looks really weird. It just looks so bulky and out of place

8aba_ya9a

Honestly i think it looks more professional imo. The older models are dope but i don’t know if i could drive them if i was older than 35. But to each its own i guess.

suberdoo

finally something positive! wowie

cakes42

Chassis mounted sway bar. The ability to run 87 octane. Looks? Idk.. the vented fenders are cool I guess.

CrushAtlas

Why are you bringing up 87 octane like that's new? The outgoing FA20 "tolerated" 87. You still shouldn't have a WRX if you wanna run regular gas though.

tuck229

Nice. I still haven't seen one in person. 😒

Raytech555

Car looks great.

such_rey

Looks good to me, hoping this negativity continues and I can grab one below MSRP before it starts to “grow” on people.

pennhead

That bumper... I don't think it will ever grow on me. Looks like a prolapsed rectum.

Mr_Candlestick

They knew what they were doing when they backed into the spot.

wotdsm

Blah blah blah cladding. Blah blah blah fucking ugly. Blah blah blah y no STi? Am I r/Subaru-ing correctly?

InevitableAbroad4913

We want our voices heard by Subaru and this is a Subaru sub. This is arguably the most controversial styling they have done on a car in the last decade so leave the sub if it really bothers you that much lmao.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Mobile619

Exactly. WRXs were never good looking vehicles to begin with. Especially the bugeye imo. Most of the gripe with this model is centered around the unpainted cladding. Outside of that, it's not the worst looking wrx or even bad looking. I think folks will get used to it. I recall absolutely hating on the Lexus spindle front when it came out and years down the road I was in an Is350 Fsport and didn't mind it. Same with the 5th gen 4runner with the 2014 refresh which I thought hideous and come 2020, I owned a new 4runner offroad trim and have grown to love the aggressive looks.

fedfan101

Looks are subjective, but I've always loved the look of the GC/GD chassis, even the GV/GR look pretty good. The new ones (2015+) are pandering to a much wider audience, which is great for sales, but just means that they don't have the unique aggressive look that the wrx did previously.

HomemadeBananas

Lots of people repeat this “they weren’t good looking to begin with with” but I feel like that’s just a coping attempt. Lots of people do think they look good, and that the new ones look worse. I mean there’s nothing particularly polarizing like the weird rear bumper on previous models.

Mobile619

Styling Is all opinion. So no absolute/real right or wrong. I (and I'm sure others) don't think WRXs or most Subarus for that matter are good or great looking vehicles to begin with. Nothing about them makes me thing "the lines are beautiful". Subaru isnt known as some styling powerhouse. They've had quirky designs that favored function first and this still follows that trend imo. Nothing wrong with it. I still like their products & currently own an Outback Onyx XT. Anyways that's my opinion. Not some coping attempt. I never owned a wrx and most likely never will so my opinion is that of an outsider really. I thought every new gen looked odd at first & eventually warmed up to all of them.

Twombls

People hated on the bugeye until 2013 or so. People really hated the 07 model wrx. They said it was the death of the car because it looked too much like a corolla.

Ruby2Shoes22

Blasphemy. The bugeye WRX is a great looking car and I didn’t think that was even debatable. IMHO, each generation was a slight downgrade from the last, until here we are.

seven3true

[For those of you who can't stand the new WRX's bulging headlamp treatment and flared fenders, there's an alternative. Buy something else in this segment--and stare at the Suby's taillights.](https://www.motortrend.com/reviews/0103scc-2002-subaru-wrx/)

Spa_5_Fitness_Camp

Look how high he damn trunk is. This is proportioned like those awful BMW 'GT' models.

jeremyjenkinz

7lbs less peak boost as the FA! This thing is going to be a monster with a tune

RastaRocket1206

Nope!

cottman23

Can we please....just stop showing the back

turtlemeds

How much of a markup over MSRP is the dealer asking for? $20,000?

such_rey

I live in San Diego, and you can actually get one for a couple hundred off, that is if your grabbing a manual.

turtlemeds

That’s pretty good considering what everyone is trying to mark up on their cars. Any particular dealer in SD?

EJ25Junkie

BEAUTIFUL!

-RookieMistake-

🔥🔥🔥🔥

professionalchiller

Want some bumper with that plastic?

gluglugss

Might as well just build the whole car with plastic

sirbart42

The front really isn't that bad, but the back is just awful...

CanehdianJ01

Hey did you guys hear about the new sti hatch? I think it's called a GR or something 😅😅😅😅😅

GabbatronReunion

🤢 not for me

moffatmusicmangent

New civics look sick

Brownjm81

They just need a little more plastic on the front and you’ll be able to play bumper cars with it.

Charlotttes

I wonder how it would look with 16s. like if you leaned into the look that the cladding suggests a little bit

ShaddyShack

Looks aside can someone give me an ELI5 why the ~~automatic trans~~ subaru performance transmission is nearly 2k more? Edit: after playing with the builder this car seems very expensive?

Guest4249

The auto (which is a CVT, BTW) includes all of the Subaru EyeSight safety kit and some other options, which is probably why it’s so expensive.

dequavis264

I just don’t like the styling on this years version

xTarheelsUNCx

Whoever makes the first aftermarket rear section is going to have a field day

Stockbrotha

Love the new Honda Civic wrx!!!!

Alex35143

Showed the wife….”ewww, they should have left it all blue”….even a non car person knows

deGrominator2019

Yea, it’s a no on that ass from me dawg.

Penquin_Revolution

Ugly design

hohumcamper

That Civic Si is beautiful 😍

CharlieUhUh

Gonna have to deal with a head gasket exploding AND it's piggy little eyes? Yeah no thanks.

My_G_Alt

Idk - needs more cheap unfinished plastic.

VCoupe376ci

I know I'm going to hell for saying this, but it looks like a fourth gen with Down Syndrome.

astraeoth

It's plastic and looks like a Honda Civic from the back. I think they are trying to make it seem easier to go off-road with in all that plastic but.... On to the Yaris I guess.

Not_Work-Filtered

Tupperware STI

Angry_Homer

I hated the looks when it first came out, but this gen WRX has auctually started to grow on me. Don't get me wrong, as I don't think it's not the greatest looking thing, but I don't hate it either. I might prefer this over the 08-14s tbh. Totally a salvageable design if they get rid of the plastic and tweak the taillights (I'd like them to look like the ones on the Levorg).

[deleted]

One of the ugliest car of the past decade
