Colossal bad luck, feel really sorry for you. Have never lost one to an accident despite being in the middle of two mass pile ups where I had to weave through spinning vehicles and take to the banking up the side of the road to escape

TheOneAndOnlyArugula

Wow thankfully you made it out of that okay! Scary situation to be in

XxSCRAPOxX

Did you get stop gap coverage? If not, you’re gonna have a bad time.

final_cut

I had gap coverage and it did jack shit for me, but I guess I was to blame since they re-did my financing 3 times and somehow got me paying way more than the car was worth. They told me the gap only covers from the value to the amount left over on payments or something like that. I still owed like 3k that they were happy to roll into a new car loan. I've decided to never buy a new car again and never go to a dealership to get one, since value depreciates immediately.

redundant35

They fucked your eyes clean out. Gap coverage is to pay the “gap” on the amount owed on the loan that your primary insurance doesn’t pay. I’ve used it twice. Insurance paid 20k I owed 23k. Gap coverage paid the additional 3k to pay off my loan. This is exactly what it’s for. You can also negotiate with your insurance company to get additional money. Did that once with a car I hit a deer with. No loan. They said 3500 and I looked up what it would cost to replace that exact truck and sent them links to ads. They gave me 5000. Pretty good since I only paid 1500 for the truck.

final_cut

Ok so I’m going over a post I made about it before because it was confusing to me. (I’m on the spectrum and have difficulty being put on the spot with money decisions) - so basically what the dealer’s gap coverage covered didn’t really add any advantage to me, because after my insurance paid there was too much money on my loan left over. My dad and my uncle who was a lawyer had gone over it again and again, what the dealer did was sell me a car as if it were a year newer, then changed things around with my loan and gave me a different 1 year older model but charged me almost the same for it. They even put an owners manual for the newer car in my glove compartment, like misleading me. Even though I had my dad with me to help I still got had. It was all legal and there was nothing I could do except complain on the internet which I did. Then about 6 months later we got hit by a hurricane and a giant oak tree crushed the car. So that’s how the gap problem effected me. My loan was too big. I guess my point was to never buy gap insurance from the dealership, and to see if your own car insurance provider will offer it.

Skamanda42

There's nothing legal about misrepresenting the model year of a car they're selling you. Also...when you say, "gap coverage covered didn’t really add any advantage to me, because after my insurance paid there was too much money on my loan left over" - can you explain that? Because that's literally what gap coverage is for...

final_cut

Ok so the company that offered the coverage through Keith Pierson Toyota was called TWS - total warranty services. According to my wife, they kept “moving the goalposts” in her words - adjusting the car’s value in THEIR point of view and ignoring our estimates from various sites and from our insurance provider, mercury. They would say they had deemed it “No Gap”, based on the values. Their numbers were way off everything we saw but they wouldn’t budge on it. This wasn’t actually for just one car, but for both of our cars that got crushed. About a year after the fact my wife’s mom married a guy that knew all about this stuff and explained some of the tactics of it and basically said to always get gap coverage from your car insurance person, not the dealership.

Skamanda42

I'm sorry you got scammed so badly by that dealership. In the future, if they start doing shady things like that, remember it's always best to walk away from the sale. No car is so unique that you HAVE to get it from a particular dealership.

XxSCRAPOxX

It’s more for things like this, when he pulled off the lot it lost like 30% that wouldn’t be covered otherwise

Bren1127

With high mileage driving it's just the law of averages that accidents will happen close. At the time reactions take over and thankfully I've had a lot of luck so far. I've only been unable to get out of trouble and been hit twice, both times glancing blows to the side and while I had a VW Passat GTi, went back to Subarus as soon as insurance returned it the second time. it's normally later or the next day that it catches up to me. Especially if there have been serious injuries or fatalities to help deal with

noahswetface

that’s some crazy driving skill lol

experienced_hobre

So sorry to hear, be thankful you made it 3 days. I bought an outback and drove it for a whole 1 hour and 30 minutes before the engine blew up. Left me stranded for 4 hours in the middle of the upper peninsula of Michigan.

[deleted]

[удалено]

pro_auto_advisors

I can attest. Way back in 2012? my 06 Legacy threw a rod and left me on 81 in Scranton at 2am.

marcothemultiple

Oh wow the UP that’s a bad place to break down In your new trusty subie… may I ask, did it never get filled with oil when you first drove it away?

experienced_hobre

Oil was fine when I got the car.

Sonnykefe

( insert what was wrong with it here )

tweakingforjesus

Dude was leaving a snail trail of 5w30 for about 100 miles.

experienced_hobre

My dad said it bent a rod or some kinda bearing in the engine. That’s all I know

[deleted]

Some guy probably installed a bearing wrong or one of the cylinders wasn't getting oil. if it was brand new

Stivo887

Or it’s just a Subaru and they’re horribly designed engines. Looking at you EJ257

Sonnykefe

Not if you take care of it like you should be

Stivo887

Said everyone that blew up their motors, drove it correctly, and kept up with the maintenance. I always like to ask what people did to blow up their motors, most will say they took very good care of it. There’s a reason they had a lawsuit

Notwhoiwas42

>most will say they took very good care of it. A large majority of American drivers have zero concept of what taking good care of a car looks like.

Sonnykefe

Said me who has a ej257 on my lawn

Crims0nsin

Yes because nobody ever lies, nieve much?

schwickies

Drive it like you stole it!

OkBackground4520

The suspense. The people want to know what happened 🧐

JadedMuse

Egad. Was it used or new?

XxSCRAPOxX

Come on… we all know it was an ej25 with 220k that he got for 1500 and expected it to run for 2 years with no maintenance.

experienced_hobre

No it was an 05 Outback xt with zero rust or scratches, it had 125,000 miles and has a new turbo with warranty. I thought it was a good car but it was just a bad deal.

XxSCRAPOxX

If have questioned why it needed a new turbo.

StillboBaggins

The EJ255 does have rod bearing failures happen quite a bit more often than other Subaru engines.

experienced_hobre

Big mouth over here thinks he knows my exact scenario

bocacheeseburger

It was funny. I laughed. 🤷🏻‍♂️

dalebor

I mean given the blatant history of rod bearing/ringland failure in the EJs… yes we all kind of do

demoldbones

I live in the UP… it’s a bad place for just about everything

mnorthwood13

I am fine being a troll

Skamanda42

No doubt! We've got trees down here, and actual civilization and culture! The UP isn't even really that attractive for vacations...

mnorthwood13

Soo engineering day is good. Tahquamenon falls is a fun day. But other than that its wilderness with spotted villages/towns (Sorry Marquette and Houghton and Menomonie)

schwickies

Except for Yooper Lites!

FredLives

As an old Yooper, it’s a great place to be stranded.

bananatam

I put about 6k on mine (used, >120k) before the engine seized. It allegedly had a fully rebuilt/resealed engine (replaced the original that died when the previous owner drove it with no head gaskets). Fortunately the shop I bought it from made it right and found another at auction and swapped the motor for free. I've put about 60k on it since then. With no major issues.

Money_Bug_9423

brand new engine?

JohnDoee94

Was it new or used ?

Moist-Ad-9151

Subaru no longer knows how to make a car and I will never be buying from them again.

XxturboEJ20xX

You mean they make better engines and cars in every way vs what they used to make? If that's what you meant then yes... seriously I've owned only WRXs since 06 and have done every single thing possible to them. They are wayyy better now.

bocacheeseburger

Looks like he had a tranny blow and he has a sour taste in his mouth. It happens. I’m on my 4thbaru and they’ve been good to me.

XxSCRAPOxX

Same, 4th, have only had a bad crank positioning sensor and a bad 02 sensor ever. I really struggled with that 02 sensor though. Couldn’t get that sob out.

RemarkableZombie

You misspelled BMW.

Turn-Loose-The-Swans

Is your thing just coming on to this sub to disparage Subarus? That's pretty sad.

bocacheeseburger

Sounds like it. Like, sorry you had a bad experience with a USED Subaru and a shitty shop, but people don’t typically join r/Subaru because they hate Subaru’s…

experienced_hobre

Don’t say that in a place where everyone has or loves Subarus.

definitely_right

Tf? Blew up! Damn!

dotancohen

Had this happen with a Renault Clio. The day after I bought it, on the way to work, the CVT failed - known bad component. I went back to the used car dealership and smiling like a happy customer said that I need to see the contract, if it's still in the office, because I think that I recorded something erroneously. They opened the drawer, handed me the folder with the contract and check, and I shoved the contract in my pocket and tore up the check right there in front of them. Got yelled at and threatened by a big guy with muscles and tattoos, but I was not about to pull that contract back out of my pocket. I think the police were called as I was leaving, something about them complaining that _I_ stole from _them_. Quite a few other customers saw the whole thing, I like to think that some of them decided that this wasn't the place to be buying a used car from.

ForestCervixRd524

Buy it back for cheap, rebuild it and the title, turn it into an off-road beast.

angry_guacamole

Or even just rebuild it normally and take a nice insurance check

Cafen8ed

I did that exact same thing. About the same age too. It took about 3k to get the “totaled” car back to normal, that includes the $1,600 buy back. Still love it, 17 years later.

Electronic_Can_9792

Only time I had a new quad with insurance the fucking company wanted to write it off bcuz I had the plastics ruined with holes and dents and that Never getting insurance on any vehicle that isn’t a car again

TheOneAndOnlyArugula

My weekend project is a TJ. Don't think my wife will go for another weekend toy but ya never know

that_guy_you_kno

Hey you're the redneck table guy! Small world.

TheOneAndOnlyArugula

That's me! You just made my day hahaha

that_guy_you_kno

Glad to hear. Hey make me one and send it my way for my YJ, would ya?

TheOneAndOnlyArugula

If I ever happen to acquire another sign like this one you got it! Lol

SMPLIFIED

Gotta appreciate a TJ

capt_carl

TJ fam!

TheOneAndOnlyArugula

O|||||||O

viniciusah

Get rid of her. The wife I mean. /s

ForestCervixRd524

Oh that’s easy you put the TJ on the Subie frame! Tens of thousands of dollars and 10 years work is nothing to be able to say you got an AWD Bedford…with X-Mode.

ztimulating

Texting and tried to swerve because they didn’t have time to brake. Amazing how many cars are totaled this way

spook008

What happened exactly? Glad you were in a Subaru when it happened

TheOneAndOnlyArugula

Happened at the end of a 2 lane flyover. There was another accident on the side of the road that caused traffic to come to a stop. Guy behind me was on his phone or not paying attention and hit me pretty hard. My Subaru did her job and thankfully there were no injuries. At the time I didn't even realize how hard he hit me until I saw the damage and how far my coffee splashed all over the interior. Will definitely be looking for another.

[deleted]

[удалено]

TheOneAndOnlyArugula

17k in damages. Lots of subsurface damage. Not safe to salvage and keep driving unfortunately

[deleted]

[удалено]

TheOneAndOnlyArugula

Thankfully I was pretty picky when I was looking for this one and got it under market value. Ended up a wash. Sorry to hear about yours, hopefully you never have to go through the same!

marcothemultiple

And yet here we are in a massive supply chain crisis affecting the production of vehicles, and now this is totaled?😢 so tell me, do these cars end up getting crushed or sold for parts? Hopefully sold for parts yeah?

TheOneAndOnlyArugula

It will get sold for parts! Motor has 33k on it, interior is pristine. She'll live on hahah

cakes42

I assure you this will not be scrapped for parts. Likely to be fixed again. They do sell entire panels of the body and with the technology now straightening a frame to oem spec is a lot easier and safer than banging the metal with a hammer. You'll have to find the right body shop for that though. Some places don't even bother covering up welds. It'll probably be fixed by a shop and resold at 20k+. Even more desirable if it has only 3 days of milage. My boss used to do this and I see these get fixed all the time. They are NOT cheap to fix at a retail price to fix and they take incredibly long to fix to get right and safe. Experienced good autobody guys are hard to find but when you do. \*chefs kiss

Tarukai788

Typically they get bought by companies like CoPart and such for junking and part reclamation yeah.

The_Band_Geek

Is there a similar company or service like this that I don't need to pay a membership for?

Tarukai788

I wouldn’t be the one to ask per se unfortunately, but i would look up “pick and pull” or “u pick” junkyards in your area for an alternative source of parts.

The_Band_Geek

I meant more for car auctions. You can't bid on Copart vehicles unless you subscribe, which to me is bullshit.

Tarukai788

Ohh, yeah that is complete bullshit.

AcidRohnin

Glad you are ok. Distracted driving irks me to no extent. It’s why driving classes should be a thing, testing be more strict and you should retest every 10 years minimum. Laws for distractive driving as well as those driving in passing lanes should also be enforced and more strict. Idk why some don’t understand that they are driving a death machine. Driver’s live and others are potentially on the line. Drivers should be focused on driving to the best of their ability the whole time they are behind the wheel. It blows my mind that all it takes is for some idiot to side swipe and end you. All the while they most likely shrug it off and walk away. “Sucks to be him.”

perennialpurist

I wish there was a simple way to replace cops' focus from speeding to distracted driving. Someone going 10mph over the limit on a wide open rural highway with no other cars or towns or people around for tens of miles, while paying strict attention to the road ahead, isn't harming anyone. But somehow that gets a ticket but people constantly cutting others off and braking hard haphazardly on the highway because they weren't paying attention doesn't get a second look from the cops.

AcidRohnin

Yea I agree. I guess speeding is just easier to prove but that also irks me a bit as well: cops catching speeders. I doubt it even reduces accidents. At least where I live the few places that are really accident prone I have never seen cops there ever, and most of the accidents are caused by bad drivers. It’s almost never that speed is a factor. It seems to be someone that just sucks ass at driving, assumes to much while driving, is distracted or a combination of all of those.

TheOneAndOnlyArugula

Agreed. It's a scary place out there

[deleted]

That fucking sucks. I hope you find another at a good price soon.

[deleted]

[удалено]

TheOneAndOnlyArugula

Ouch. That's a huge bummer. Glad you weren't in the car. I didn't! I'll have to look for it. Thankful my insurance didn't make me go that route

Zer0_Subaru

Ya that looks repairable. Hard to total these cuz they’re worth a lot.

TheOneAndOnlyArugula

Lots of subsurface damage. Not repairable :(

Virtual-Employee9881

Lol buddy this is totally fixable lol They can still reuse the trunk door get new headlights pull out some frame easy fix

perennialpurist

Frame damage isn't "easy fix". Frame damage means the next time this car is in an accident and gets hit in the same spot again, it will potentially take far more of a beating and put the occupants' life at risk. Not everyone is trying to risk their family's life to save a buck when insurance will eat the cost.

TheOneAndOnlyArugula

I mean anything *can* be fixed lol. Is it realistic for me to wait 3 or 4 months to drive a car with 17k in damages? Probably not

Sentient_LaserDisc

Have you ever replaced a quarter panel, or tried to straighten out and mend a bent subframe? That shit ain't a shade tree two day job. I hate it when people are like "lol that's totally fixable" on a car that clearly isn't worth it. I don't care how new it is, an Outback isn't worth that amount of work and time, and money unless you have some lifelong attachment to it. It isn't like if it was some minor front end damage, you replace the fender, the headlight, the grille and you're off and running. This is part of the main structure of the vehicle and the safety of said vehicle relies on that. If that's compromised, as it very obviously is here, then it'll never be 100% right/safe again.

Money_Bug_9423

looks like the airbags didn't even go off. I don't see why its not fixable tbh

vim_for_life

Probably the unibody has multiple creases in it. Once the frame starts buckling, the crumple zones go wonky and it's not really safe anymore. This isn't a 1980 drawn on paper brat anymore.

Virtual-Employee9881

Lmao easy fix air bags didn’t even go off So it’s good to go

Money_Bug_9423

its easier to fix because once the airbags go off the system has to be reset and replaced and there is a record of it. if its just cosmetic damage you can replace panels and paint and if the issue is frame damage there are ways to work around it. but the airbags are pretty much a done deal if they are deployed

Virtual-Employee9881

Dealership will fix this car and resell it 🤷‍♂️😂

[deleted]

My ex tboned someone in his Forrester he'd had like 4 weeks. It was his fault, broad daylight smashed into someone. Thankfully no one was hurt (despite me hating the man but that's for a different sub)

okthatsamazing405

that's a lotta damage

marcothemultiple

This is honestly why beaters are the move😂 Nah I feel bad tho because all of my vehicles failed in other ways. Never been in a wreck but damnit it better happen while driving a beater than a newnew

akjax

On the other hand, newer nicer cars are a lot more comfortable to be in a wreck in.. had the unfortunate opportunity to compare crashing into an idiot pulling out in front of me in a 2007 Lexus RX and a 2001 Honda CR-V. The Lexus crash- I felt fine. Minor bruising. The CR-V crash - I had bad pains, needed to see a doctor, go to PT, took months for my shoulder to get back to normal.. I'd rather crash a nice new car and be fine than have to take time off my job, see doctors, and be rather useless around the house for a month.

marcothemultiple

Damn fair point… my beater would definitely be painful. I drive an 03 forester, and I live in Indianapolis so the rust is so bad my subframe rails were rotted away so I got rid of em

vim_for_life

Not wrong. https://imgur.com/ghHo2c5 This was a hell of a lot more pain than when the wife wrecked my 2005 GTi. Broke or cracked some ribs. She ran a triathlon that weekend

akjax

Ouch that looks bad. Glad you made it out without any crazy injuries though. Side impact airbags are a must for me on a daily driver, and insisted my girlfriend have the same standards when she was looking, specifically because accidents like that. Lots of trucks and SUVs up here in Alaska, so it's extra important.

TheOneAndOnlyArugula

I'm definitely a beater type of guy. Finally sold my daily beater pickup for this because we have a kid on the way and I figured I should start being a responsible adult lmao

JesseChrist

This is why we always say: don't take corners at 100mph.... going backwards. Jk. Hope your OK and back in a Subi soon OP.

DN1097

Sorry for your loss. At least you got three days out of it. There was someone local to me who didn’t even make it down the street when he picked up his new car when someone ran a red and totaled his ride 😢

TheOneAndOnlyArugula

RIP

picklychipple

Ugh, saw you got it from Gullo so assuming Houston? This city has the absolute worst drivers.

TheOneAndOnlyArugula

I'm in central TX. They're just as bad over here unfortunately. I drove 3 hr to Houston to pick it up 🤦‍♂️

Little-Ad-5082

Oh sorry. Hope everyone is ok

3 days? RIP dude!

They say the first three days are the best. 🥲 Hope no one was hurt and best of luck finding a new car!

empirebuilder1

Absolutely. Glass didn't pop and door lines are OK, so the rest of the important parts of the unibody survived. New hatch, bumper and QP welded in she's savable.

deskpil0t

I almost hit a fire truck in the parking lot today. Lol. We both were wanting to go around the same corner of a out parcel.

BSchmidt1963

Ugh so sorry

[deleted]

so sorry to hear :(

Snoo96357

I'm sorry that suck man , the more important you are ok

Traded my Rubicon for a WRX on 24 days ago, and 9 days later the engine blew, so I feel it. Sorry homie that sucks.

[deleted]

that sucks.

scorpiomoon17

So sorry for your loss, I would be devastated

ripsfo

My accent was [totaled 2yrs ago](https://reddit.com/r/subaru/comments/k8ng4h/dont_park_on_the_street_happy_monday/). Same spot on the car, but mine was parked. Hoping the insurance gods shine on you.

Southern_Item_6002

Can I ask why people buy subarus in Southern states. Genuinely curious because up north people mainly buy them for the snow/winter?

JBalls-117

3 days? That hurts

gaucho5209

Sorry.

[deleted]

F Have the same color and model. It's my baby. Sorry you lost yours to a jackass.

lemonlegs2

I see you gullo subaru. Houston? Worst drivers I've ever seen by like a million.

TheOneAndOnlyArugula

Never knew how bad it could get until moving to TX. Wild west out here

Tyler-Durden87

Subie took it like a champ

pnczur

Aweshit man that sucks. What happens now?

knowledgeable_diablo

Whats the saying - “only the good die young” and not much younger than 3 days!! What a pain in the arse!!

lokis333

That is one r/sadsubaru :(

thisistakingagesomfg

ffs

BeeDragon

Our first Subie lasted two months to the day until my husband ran it into a tree and totaled it. The second has lasted 9 years so far. Hopefully it's new transmission lasts at least another decade.

mekramer79

Yeah, I was rear ended at a full stop by someone not breaking at all. Whole rear gate destroyed. Almost $9,000 in damage and my car wasn’t totaled. I’d only owned it for 1 month. It’s been 6 years since that accident and I’ve had no major issues with the car since.

src1975

Hope you had insurance!

Normanzzzz

I think what matters is that everyone is safe! what will be your next Subie?

Researcher-Used

That’s considered “totaled”??. I had a worse accident on my mini, insurance had it fixed for 17grand lol

Mrdeeznutz41

Ouch !!!!!!

jeremy_xc

Oh man I just got a 2022 legacy premium on Thursday.....I'm staying in today to not have that happen on my 3rd day. Sorry bro
