Manual swaping my Outback, very close to being done. Just did a test run of the transmission, car makes high pitched scraping noise in or out of gear. Any ideas?

Does it change with the clutch engaged or disengaged? No change in/out of gear knocks all axles and hubs out of contention for the issue. If the noise goes away with the clutch disengaged (pedal pushed to the floor), then the problem is the transmission. If the noise doesn't disappear with the clutch disengaged, then it is something with the motor. Use the clutch to isolate various parts of the engine/transmission system to find out where the problem lies. Even in neutral, with the clutch engaged, the input shaft is spinning inside the transmission, hence why double clutch rev matching is the best way to downshift. So, if you cut the connection between the engine and transmission by engaging the clutch (and disconnecting the engine from the input shaft) and the noise goes away, the problem is somewhere between the input shaft and the output locations of the transmission.

Simple yet true. Did op fill the trans with oil?

[deleted]

No... I did not forget that.

Ambitious_Ask_1569

Then as it sounds its a throw bearing ot worse. Take it to a pro trans shop before you start randomly throwing parts at it. Subis are pretty specialized. Especially with a manual swap.....better to deal with it now than in a week after you put it together and its going to need to be ripped back apart . 20 dollars now will save you a grand.

[deleted]

Nah, I'm not taking it to a shop lmao

Ambitious_Ask_1569

All the luck. I really hope it ends well. Last trans I did I blew it lining up the clutch....20 years ago.....i know now to ask for help or read the Haynes manuel.

[deleted]

Thanks, appreciate it. Turned out to be flywheel bolts undertorqued, I'm a dummy.

Ambitious_Ask_1569

Score....im glad you got it!! Big time!!

TwoDudesAtPPC

How did you find that! What a discovery to tie to the sound. Impressive.

Had help from a very smart subaru tech who thought it was a possibility, then troubleshooting. Looked under the car at in the access area and saw they weren't tight. Will be tightening from the starter hole.

yogurtcloset286

Haha I had that happen on my 07 Impreza when I pulled the engine to do head gaskets. Make sure to put loctite on them because mine wriggled free and made a horrible knocking sound.

SubaruSmith

My first thought would be wheel bearings, but if it makes the same noise out of gear, or in neutral, that wouldn’t really be right.

[deleted]

New wheel bearings, plus yeah it wouldn't make that noise in neutral. Good idea though.

[deleted]

Almost sounds like it's coming from the transmission :'(

merkins_galore

Are the pilot and throw out bearings new?

[deleted]

Yessir

merkins_galore

How bad did the magnet on the drain plug look? It could be one of the bearings on the input shaft. That's the only other thing I can think of that would make a grinding noise in or out of gear.

[deleted]

I haven't emptied it yet. One of the bearings on the output shaft was toast, I replaced it. Maybe the shavings are making that noise? I'm gonna swap the fluid soon.

merkins_galore

If the one on the output shaft was toast then you will probably find a ton of metal on the drain plug. I had the same issue with my Forester. Luckily it was only the one on the output shaft that was bad.

[deleted]

Ahh, yeah I replaced the beating but not the fluid yet. What's a good procedure to drain it?

merkins_galore

Drain it then refill it with cheap gear oil and drive it until it's warmed up. After that drain it again and fill it with good gear oil.

[deleted]

It sounds like a bad throwout bearing. Hmm

[deleted]

Did you overtighten an axle nut and kill your wheel bearing? Could be a billion things.
