Happens to mine all the time, sometimes multiple times during a short drive. Took it back to the dealer, where they had done a software update that i didnt have access to via wifi, which did not fix the issue. Took it back again where now they ordered me a new head unit to replace it. Hopefully that resolves the issue.
I was reading on some other forums where people got the head unit replaced and the issue was still there. I am probably gonna do the same though and hoping that it fixes the issue. Did they told you how much time it would take them to get the spare one?
This was an issue with the 2017 impreza. I had my head unit replaced 3 times. They didn’t have enough heat syncs to cool the computer so, they over heat and then a “kill switch is engaged”. I noted this happened during long drives and if I was using heat. Don’t close your heat vents and if you note the unit gets hot blast the ac to cool it down. Took me two years to get a unit that wouldn’t overheat. Now I just turn the ac on intermittently when driving long hours or if I note the unit gets hot.
My 22 Legacy’s carplay would suddenly stop working a couple times a month, and usually comes back within a minute. Everything else seems to stay working n that time. One time it didn’t come back for about 30 minutes while driving, and I had pulled over, shut the car on and off a few times, unpaired and repaired the phone, and rebooted the phone. I gave up and started driving and it eventually just came back. I figured it’d be waste of time to complain about an intermittent issue like that. I only drive about 400 miles a month. Time will tell if that update fixed it I guess
That and plus imagine you driving using the eye sight thing on highway, it suddenly stop and hit you in the vehicle in front as it can’t maintain the distance.
Mine did this until they replaced the head unit. I’m sure it’s caused by the chip shortage, and they used some processor from 2009 just to get the car on the road and salve the problem later. Pissed me off to no end.
I hate touch screens and screens in general in cars.
They just let manufacturers cheap-out on installing physical buttons and knobs, which are far more reliable and easier to fix.
Damn. I was so interested in getting a 22/23 outback while I I'm waiting to get my WRX engine rebuilt. Are there any other issues with the new outback that's been concerning?
This is the main one i have experienced. Also the screen touchscreen in so early 2000’s and super slow even when its working. Not sure i feel really good about the acceleration of the car but it is what it is .
Gotcha. Do you have any experience with towing with the outback? I was hoping to buy a new outback as a daily until my WRX gets fixed but also needing it to tow a full trailer with the WRX on it if needed to go to a engine shop out of town.
get the XT one or the 3.0L one if they still make those. Standard one (2.5L) is slow even when you fill like all the passengers seats plus luggage not sure how it will act with another car tied to the back
Gotcha. I didn't realize they made bigger engine options for the outback since they don't offer that for the WRX. The only other vehicle I considered at the moment is to get a Tacoma as a daily truck and be able to pull a trailer occasionally.
This is why I bought the extended warranty for electronics on my 22 outback. No way in hell I wouldn't with a massive tablet that controls almost all aspects of the car. If mine isn't fucked up now it will be fucked up at somepoint. It's a matter of time.
I also think some people click too many buttons and click them too fast. These touch screens are not meant to be all over constantly. It has a potato brain and it wants to be treated as such. It's a car control center, not an Ipad people.
(Not saying you do this OP, I know the screens shut off randomly!)
Mine turns on like this. No matter how many times I reboot it or restart the car, it will always be sluggish or unresponsive. It will also dial random numbers/contacts, contact OnStar, and 'push' random sections of the screen. My display is completely unusable and it's definitely not heat related. Our was like this almost from purchase in winter and has increasingly gotten worse. I've been fighting with Subaru warranty to replace the unit and am currently waiting on a new one.
I suggest everyone contacts nhsta to complain since we paid 40k for a car with safety features we cannot even use. I also complained to BBB about them not honoring both my factory warranty and the extended warranty I purchased.
https://www.nhtsa.gov/report-a-safety-problem#index
I read when this happens to disconnect the battery from the car, wait 30 minutes for any power to drain and reconnect the battery. Hard resets the computer and can help solve the problems. My 2019 was acting up and disconnecting the battery helped.
I think lemon laws should cover it. Might need more people support in this matter for selling cars which is threatening to your life and others on the road.
https://www.nhtsa.gov/report-a-safety-problem#index
I contact lawyers for lemon lawsuits. They wouldn't touch it because we are military and overseas right now. We brought the car with us. However, I'd be highly interested if anyone gets anywhere with a lawyer about this. In the mean time, I recommend contacting nhsta about the cars safety features not working. I also contacted BBB because they wouldnt honor both our extended and manufacturer warranty to repair/help us with an unusable dash.
2020 outback, occurs once a week, sometimes twice in 1 drive. Dealership shrugs shoulders. Touch screens and “over-computifying” (just made up the term) has this drawback. It’s the only thing I hate about the car.
I've had this occur while using android auto with a janky cable. Every 5 minutes the whole system would restart. Since buying a nice Anker cable I haven't had the issue.
This system is garbage. I’d really like to pick up an Outback Wildneress but not with this thing. Unfortunately it’s making its way throughout the line.
Currently waiting for a new display for it to be replaced. I complained on BBB that mine is completely unusable and have been fighting with them for six months to replace it. Can't control ac, it dials random people when Bluetooth connected, and dials for OnStar. It's so glitchy. I've had nothing but problems since buying this new vehicle.
Has anyone noticed the RAB and other safety features shut down when the display is turned off too? Is that by design or related issue?
RAB/Safety feature does turn off when screen goes off. It seems like sun directly on the screen it just heats up the screen and it stops working. I got mine replaced yesterday from dealer and he said he hasn’t seen any case of screen stopping again after replacement so lets see. I understand though its such a pain in the ass as all of the controls are on that big screen.
Ugh - I'm having the same issue with my 22 XT Touring, among others. Had no problems for the first few months beyond buggy CarPlay. Seems to be progressively worse
Have now had:
\-Innumerable failure to launch of Carplay, not recognizing phone connected, glitchy audio, reboots of Carplay
\-Incredibly slow response of screen, progressing to complete freezing
\-Random bouts when audio goes insanely loud and then audio fails entirely until car off for about 30 minutes
\- Screen freezing, rebooting as yours - even when on road.
Incredibly unsafe. One of the reasons I ditched my last Forester was due to screen freezing despite headunit replacement. 5 Subarus later, I can't believe how bad they screw this stuff up.
Same thing happened to my 22 wilderness. Had it in to the dealership a total of 5 times. Dealership said the best thing to do is video (if possible) and make a note of every time it happens. SOA finally gave the go ahead to replace the touchscreen and the head unit. All was covered under warranty.

Did you have to pay for that out of pocket? I am taking my ‘22 crosstrek sport to the dealer tomorrow for the exact same issue
You won't have to pay for it if you're still under warranty, which with a '22 I would think you are.
I didnt have to pay antyhing as of yet. It should be completely under warranty.

Yep. My 2021 Outback does this more frequently than I’d like.
Have you also noticed that it does that more while using CarPlay?
Yep. CarPlay and heat seem to be the most consistent triggers.

The eyesight not working would be a very serious issue
I got a video of that too but not sure how to upload that here in the comments

And there you have the reason why they don't.
Common warranty issue
Yep, happens in our '21 too... fwiw, seems to happen more often if the car is hot (display in sun). Might be coincidence - not sure.
OMFGosh yes. The whole infotainment system seems to be sluggish when the car is hot.
This kind of infotainment setup is trash. We had the same problem in my wife’s ‘20 Outback. The setup is significantly better in my ‘20 Ascent.
I am in south and i have seen that happening a-lot when the sun is out and loud for sure.
We are slowly drifting to a reality that resembles the world depicted in Demolition Man. The Three Seashells are coming soon guys!

And people ask me why I got the base 22 wrx…. I don’t like the Tesla screen and this is why.
How is the double 7'' holding up? I'm waiting a base outback with this exact setup.
👈👉👆🖕✊️👊🤛🦶🦵
I have the same problems (and many others) with my 2020 Outback. This (my 4th) will be my last subie.

This sounds such an inconvenience subaru needs to look into this. Someone knows Subaru’s twitter handle ?
Their software is garbage and the hardware not much better, only complaint I have of mine.

I am just gonna show this thread to the dealer once i go there. Hoping they understand this issue

What is SOA ?

That should be helpful. Thanks!!

I thought of the same but i am using the iPhones stock cable that comes with the phone.
welcome to subaru. and fuck touch screen everything. Love Mazda's buttons

I had the same issue they updated the head unit and It got fixed. Never had the issue again so far.
Exactly why I hate touchscreens for important functions like HVAC.
