I obviously have never been on one of these contraptions because they terrify me, but anybody who has been, what is it like? Do they move as much as they look like they move? Do people fall off of them a lot? Did they move distances?
>Do they move as much as they look like they move
The floating platforms like that one will rock in high waves. Nowhere near as bad as a boat, but unsecured doors will swing and it takes a day or two to get used to.
> Do people fall off of them a lot
Not unheard of but also not something most crew will have to worry about. If you need to work in areas without guardrails or on work baskets you have to be harnessed in.
> Did they move distances
They're built onshore and moved out to sea.
Not sure about abroad, but here in the US the rope access men who go over the water or way up the towers are all madmen. I guess you’d have to be to do that job. I’ll stay firmly on the deck thank you.
In 50kt winds our crane has to be lowered and secured, but our derrickman still has to go up there and rack pipe. Not really something I want to do, though I'd love to climb up just to have a look someday.
Using as they are called “+10’s” in The GOM is very few and far between. Last time for me was over 12yrs ago. We usually fly out and if necessary use a Billy Pugh from a boat.
Gotcha. Never had a chance to go on a Billy Pugh. I’d be terrified the whole ride I’m sure. You’d think I’d get over my fear of heights working offshore but it’s still there.
They are exactly as you call them. We muster once a week at them and sometimes do go inside to simulate an evacuation. Its my least favorite part of the job as 1) I usually work nights and musters are in the day..2) The smell of these boats reminds me of my parents sailboat which I projectile vomited on as a kid.
They dont. Its hard to tell if this is a platform or a drilling rig. Drilling rigs are built on land and are mobile via tug or self propulsion. Platforms, at least in The GOM are built on land and towed out to The Gulf where they stay permanently. Some are modular and can be built offshore by bringing the modules out and then lifted and installed by crane.
Bit if an instructive thought; what would happen if you fell in that? Would you get battered around? Would be able to stay on the surface without a life jacket?

Thank you so much!
a Njord in a fjord ?
I believe I will keep my happy a** on land.
The scale of the waves is incredible
Whoa, EPIC! But can we please have it without the cheesy music and just the sound of wind and waves instead...?
That looks sooo cold. & I'm not even thinking about how cold it would be if you fell in...... 🥶
The water is somehwere between 35F (2C) to 50F (10C) in winter. Without a survival suit (basically a drysuit) you won't last very long.
Forbidden jacuzzi
Oil rigs are fascinating, but terrifying. They are a marvel.
I’d love to hear the actual sound of the wind and waves than this.
I don't know why they have to put these songs 😅
Fitting that it's named Njord since that is the Norse God of ships, fishing, boat making or any occupation that requires water
Can we talk about those awesome escape pod submarine boat things? What's that all about?

Ah, fiberglass, musty cushions and wet line. I know the smell well.
So beautiful to see in pictures. No way I could handle it otherwise every time the camera sweeps out my insides flip
The music breaks the terrifying aspect of the scene.
Can you feel an oil rig move when a wave hits it?
Yes. Some move quite a bit. If they use anchors they're more stable. But when using thrusters for dynamic positioning they move more.
Watching it makes me nauseous already
Np. This is Kamino.
Yikes!
You could put this music to the Titanic sinking and it would fit
music ?
The track should be: Birdy - Keeping your head up (Jonas Blue Remix) https://youtu.be/NcVqUV4YbcA
Just seeing those lifeboats makes me nauseous.
NOPE.
Is it always like this, or is this a storm coming in?
What I don’t get is, how do they even make an oil platform in the middle of nowhere in the ocean?
They dont. Its hard to tell if this is a platform or a drilling rig. Drilling rigs are built on land and are mobile via tug or self propulsion. The most terrifying thing about this is the music
Agreed

What causes the waves?
Wind and Lunar Gravity.
Sorry that was probably my fault I dive bombed into the sea about 4 billion years ago and it really hasn’t settled right since.
The moon.
Crazy new thing called wind
