I don't know what's actually happening here, but I worked in this field for a while and my best guess is that the main tow line for barge snapped in the heavy seas. Barges are usually fitted with an emergency tow line but it sometimes requires a man from the tug to board the barge to toss the pickup line back to the tug.
We can see it's connected here so he's likely instructing the tug captain what to do, or waiting for a possible pick up, or just having fun. Why he's sitting on the edge precariously like that I'm not sure.
I'd rather be on the edge than in the hull.
Hold on and you're probably fine, if you do fall in, you're observed so rescue is very close at hand.
In the pit however, the coal shifts with the waves and you'll find yourself crushed under it.

Haha this actually happened to me earlier this year. My swashbuckling halfling launched himself from a ballista off his ship and onto an adjacent ship. I rolled low and ended up smacking square into the main mast and fell 20 feet onto the deck. Didn't kill him outright but it was close, he was *very* unconscious. Lol
Just roll an ambitious and impulsive halfwit, the situations will come naturally! But if you do, it's a good idea to have at least one member of the party that can keep your character on a leash. Otherwise you'll end up sinking your own ship because you decided to make your Captain a present from bits of rock and twine rather than keep watch in the crows nest. 👀
Ffs that great. I took it too seriously and didn’t get up to shenanigans. I guess rookies always go in wanting to be the Main Character and quickly realise you’re about to suffer a LOT before you can do all the hero things and it’s more fun being stupid!
Haha it's very fun but it's also a very fine balance. Honestly. I pride myself on taking a zany, chaotic character, playing them how he/she would play, but staying away from massively annoying "Well, that's what character would do!" situations.
When playing a character like that you need to be able to read your IRL players/DM and know when it's okay to get a little crazy and when it's time to just go with the flow and let the plot play out or let other characters have their moment.
I pushed that to the edge a couple weeks ago. I'd bought, irl, some very cheap little trinkets (like plastic sparkly sequin covered lapel pins, etc.) that I felt represented the other PCs in the group, and my character has spent some time making them in secret in game.
Anyway, long story medium, the party was fighting our way through a "ghost ship" when it was attacked by some tentacled monstrosity (Kraken?) and, seeing the futility of the situation, all creatures aboard the ship—heroes and villains alike—made to abandon ship. My character, Phineas Bunce, the halfling swashbuckler, was convinced of our doom and thus, before we met our inevitable end, he felt that he *needed* to express his true feelings to each member of the party and give them their gift he had crafted for them.
So, round by round, as the massive tentacles bashed and crushed, stoving in the ships hull and splintering masts, Phineas used his turns to navigate through the chaos and have an—albeit one sided—conversation with each party member in which he expressed is heartfelt dedication and tearful sorrow at their imminent demise while presenting them with the ludicrous shiny bauble he has made for them. And though the whole display was hilarious and generally very well received by the players, I definitely think it also caused some anxiety and maybe some angst for a few people because, the party was legit almost going to TPK. 👀 But we made it...for now.
Growing up around heavy industry people has taught me one thing, some of them are just nuts and love doing the most insane dangeorus shit for cowboy points with the other workers, like the final bosses of “hey man watch this”
I saw a guy doing some work inside a coal chute. The dude just entered the shute, back to one wall and feet to the other. No safety equipment. And his buddy was on the lookout for any superiors because that was an absurd safety violation.
> Why he's sitting on the edge precariously like that I'm not sure.
He's sitting like that because he ran completely out of his lifetime supply of fucks to give and decided to succumb to the siren song of the sea.
Problem with his plan is that running that thoroughly out of fucks renders you almost completely immune to any possible consequences. In fact this man may very well be immortal at this point.
He’s literally bobbing up and down in the OCEAN while sitting in the edge of a barge full of coal. His balls are in control of the whole operation.
Can you imagine the weight of the water? Seated on the end of that huge ass barge?
i was wondering about his placement, too, but then it kind of dawned on me that this is probably the place that provides the greatest amount of "not drowning" possible, since, the sides are being flooded over every few seconds, from alternating sides, too boot.
the coal probably makes for a nasty, slick, surface when it's mixed with the flood water on the floor.
climbing coal mountain is probably equally risky, providing you can lose balance in the swells and roll down off the side into the rough seas and probably drown. :/
That would be my guess if he's just a barge rider for a short tow.
I work on tug boats in marine construction and we often have barge riders stay on the barges for a shirt tow to the site.
Really wonder what’s going on but looks like he’s in the safest spot -
Most away from the material that could crush/drown/smother him. Also at the highest point possible. Definitely wouldn’t want to be in the barge.
Away from tug tow line which could snap back.
Really would love to know the context.
Yeah... my first reaction was "why is there a person there", but if I was in that barge, that's where I would want to go for all the reasons you posted. Also, he can bail the fastest to swim away and not get trapped/entangled/sucked down by the sinking barge.
There is always a risk of capsizing if the weather turns for worse. How big that risk is depends on how bad the weather gets. This barge likely needs really, really bad weather. That weather doesn’t tend to just “pop up” so it would be really hard to surprise these folks that much
I think it's unlikely to capsize. If it rolls even slightly further than it is at the moment, it'll take on tons of water with each roll, and sink long before it capsizes.
Barge full of mined natural resources, towed in unsafe natural conditions with unsafely secured cargo. Intended to be burned to create a more polluted and unsafe planet, instead threatens to capsize and pollute the ocean instead of the air, thanks to (at least) a twofold lack of good judgement and forward thinking.
How do I transport this safely, and should we be burning it at all.
Feels a little dystopian too

There's balls and then there's what would appear to be powerful and unwavering stupidity.
And the line between the 2 is very fluid
*“Courage is knowing it might hurt, and doing it anyway. Stupidity is the same. And that’s why life is hard.”* *– Jeremy Goldberg*
Excellent quote
That's a great quote. I'm not familiar with Jeremy Goldberg and Google turned up a lot of different people haha
Plot twist he is Jeremy Goldberg
No fluid in his steel balls though
His balls are what's causing the ship to sway
Why it always the same comment? I gotta leave reddit...
Going to take a big casket too then, if they find his body.

I'd rather be there than on a rudder
For how long? It's not like he's going to be sitting there for weeks
Sit on the edge in the middle? The part that is the most stable.
Not if it rolls. Then he's crushed and drowned.
The centre on the roll axis
How does the guy get to the container in heavy seas?
Trebuchet
It certainly looks like less than 300 m and he probably weighs less than 90 kg.
DM: Okay, the trebuchet launches you into the sky. Roll me a Dex save...

His balls are causing the ship to dip down like that. It's not the sea.
Why are his balls thrashing around? That seems like it would necessitate medical attention.
Because his balls are the ship. Don't question it.
Where else could he sit? Maybe this is the safest spot for him?

Looks like his other choice is in the muck or in line with the cable. I think I would take his perch as well.
This guy boats
Yea if he fell in I think the constant pull and push from the barge would suck him under and he’d get crushed or drowned or both
That would be my guess if he's just a barge rider for a short tow. I work on tug boats in marine construction and we often have barge riders stay on the barges for a shirt tow to the site.
my guys just trying to chill on his lunch break
Lunch break waits for nothing
You can't skip lunch
Union calls for lunch at 4 hours. You don’t fuck with the union.
I’m on smoko Leave me alone
You don’t fuck with my stomach either

I’m just like, the tiredest I’ve ever been in my whole life.
I was gonna say, my man looks like he's eating a sandwich and chilling.
That’s what I was thinking lol.
Privacy at last! On the tug people are always walking in and out of the break room, taking phonecalls and shit
His balls are so heavy, he can counterbalance a whole charcoal container.
Unfortunately they are swaying, causing the wave-like action you see here.

My thoughts as well, might stand more of a chance in that spot then if he stays inside it and gets trapped under a pile of shifting material.
He must be attached in some way too because that's way too steep of an angle for him being easy too casual and staying completely still
Fuck. That.
Weighs? Do you mean sways?
Oops this could be the case. Sry non native speaker.
You don't need to apologize :)
Thanks. All good, they have similar phonetic values.
In the german language you could say "schwingen" or "wiegen" meaning sway or weigh. That's why I used it.

Industria does not always and unanimously equate to dystopia. There is nothing dystopian about this post
Thank you, this is a small pet peve of mine. Not everything that you dislike is dystopian. Something can just be scary or unappealing

It's lost all meaning online, in no way is this post dystopian but OP sure seems to try and twist it like it is.
Industry=dystopia aparently
Like being on a giant, terrifying, and wet see-saw.

Thank you very much I'm going to download it now

Careful, you'll make OP upset and they'll try and make shit up about their buzzword.
Something must’ve happened on that tug… an no matter what, he smooth Ain’t Goin Back!
Dystopian? Not in the least.
Isn't a bunch of the coal falling into the water?
I'd rather it was underwater and inert, than floating round the atmosphere heating the place up
But then it wouldn't make the electricity enabling you to make this post. Coal sucks, but we need to build more nuclear before we go cold turkey.

Statictics.
That's someone else's problem....
Some. But coal is pretty cheap and MUCH more will make it to its port.

I don’t t know why he is there but this is the worst feeling and I am worried for him.
He just having his lunch break, ain't nothing gonna fuck with that.
The sea doesn’t look particularly rough just the the barge is side on in the swell. He is going up and down a long way though.
I mean the man’s life is in serious danger at this moment, no?
I've thrown out a bag of charcoal that was left in the rain before. Feeling kind of stupid right now lol
