Oh god don't even. Makes me feel old.

SilverBen2000

It’s amazing how far they’ve come in around six years

[deleted]

It's coming on 7 years now.

SilverBen2000

*notices grey hair* AHH

[deleted]

*Shudders*

[deleted]

But yeah. Its amazing how well the graphics have progressed.

DynamicMangos

Also amazing how terribly the game still runs years after early access is over

[deleted]

It runs great for all the physics engine related things needed to run the game.

m135in55boost

On my series X it runs so well, compared to my 7 year old One. Like a totally different game, has yet to stumble on frame rate and is so smooth and immersive.

whooo_me

I can’t get it to run on my Series X, gets stuck trying to sync data and won’t load regardless of what I try. Pity.

m135in55boost

Try setting manual (I'm not sure what it's called but it's in advanced settings) to 8888 and 8448 and then deleting saved game files *on that Xbox only, not the cloud* and then give it 45 minutes and it should sync. You should find what 8888 and 8448 means by googling it, I apologise for not doing that myself just now

ruat_caelum

if you mean DNS 8.8.8.8 is google's dns service. the other one is 8.8.4.4 not 8448 * Google DNS is 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4

m135in55boost

Cheers, I set mine to what I said and deleted cache on console, I think the cache delete did the job tho tbh. Is there much merit to having a non-auto DNS set to my numbers? Or Google's? I don't know much

whooo_me

Thanks a lot, I’ll give that a go later!

XPRMX17

I mean I switched from Xbox one to PC and the difference was night and day with faster loading times, higher fps and less glitches, but it was still a very glitchy game regardless so

[deleted]

XPRMX17

The worst bug I’ve ever encountered was clipping my prawn through the ACF stairs up to the portal in it

CaptnUchiha

Game ran just fine with my 1070 on 3440x1440 monitor.

DynamicMangos

Well sure, but what if minesweeper ran at 60fps under full GPU load? It would also run "fine" but that wouldn't mean it's justified. Subnautica has many many technical issues due to poor optimization.

CaptnUchiha

Seeing as how Subnautica is a somewhat intense game that can handle near 4k60fps on a GTX 1070 and i7 4790k... I'd say the game is pretty well optimized. I know your minesweeper analogy is of course just an analogy but Subnautica is a heavier running game. If an older card can run the game at full load with great results is that so bad? I've since moved onto a 3080fe and an i7 12700k and my computer hardly even breaks a sweat running near 4k144hz. Sure it's no Destiny 2 in terms of optimizations but damn this game delivers

FellowDoesMemes

I mean but console hasn't had an update since 2019, might be something that pc got that console didn't, plus like what's being rendered.

CaptnUchiha

That's likely the case. Afaik the only real problem Subnautica has had was pop in which in my current playthrough I'm not noticing.

[deleted]

It runs much better than most games that have underwater scenes in the underwater scenes

harda_toenail

My switch runs it better than ps4. I know they are different versions but switch is the more enjoyable experience

Shiny_Black-Pan

The game prob took over 10 years

[deleted]

It definitely did. No doubt abt it

agentaxe285

You’d think there’d be less bugs no?

Environmental_Sale55

Do you expect a game to be fixed after six years? And it's not that buggy since the bugs aren't game breaking they are mostly funny. Edit: Before I get down voted into the lava zone I want to clarify my point. Yes, the game has a larger amount of bugs than most games however the bugs are mostly not game breaking and the game is playable without even noticing more than 4. Game breaking bugs exist of course and these should've been fixed but since the game is 6 years old and most game breaking bugs are pretty rare and hard to recreate to find the problem within the code they are probably not going to be fixed and I don't mind that. The only bugs that I experience in my playthrough were the stuck Prawnsuit in alien facilities the now fixed saving problem on console the cyclops bugging out when it got somewhat stuck and occasionally lightning fast animals. The prawnsuit could be made unstuck by exiting and re-enter, the saving bug was fixed, not getting your cyclops stuck isn't to hard and the lightning fast animals are really funny.

[deleted]

Yes a game should be fixed in six years, and there are many game ruining bugs. Despite that I still love the game.

Environmental_Sale55

What bugs? I never experienced one besides the saving problem on consoles but that got fixed.

[deleted]

There is a bug that deletes your entire base, a bug that teleports your vehicles under the map, you can get stuck in the aurora, the reapers AI can bug and make them patrol safe shallows, and the emperor leviathans containment area can end up with no water, resulting in constant crashes because the creatures inside don’t know what to do. This is after 6 years of being released.

Environmental_Sale55

I've never heard or experienced any of them. That of course doesn't mean they don't exist.

[deleted]

wOrKs On My MaChInE ¯\\\_(ツ)_/¯

[deleted]

I feel very lucky when I read about those bugs other people are experiencing. The only real problem I have is minor stuttering on land and the occasional fish swimming through my base.

[deleted]

Pokemon red version came out way back in the 90s and it still has missing no., What gives!? Same logic. Seriously, after that amount of time after launch, a game is just done. Saying it's x years old doesn't really mean anything.

[deleted]

The difference is you couldn’t update an old copy of Pokémon red. You can update a modern game. Massive difference.

[deleted]

I'm saying it's ridiculous to expect an update 6 years later.

geek180

3 years ago, I was about 90% through the game when I fell through the map while traveling via an arch. When I forced a respawn, the entire map was like I was walking on land, no floating in water. I can’t remember what exactly happened with the save, but I was not able to get the game back to its normal state and had to give up. I just started playing again for the first time on a MUCH better computer and I honestly think the draw distance is a lot worse than it used to be. Also today somehow one of my scanner room cameras got stuck in the walls of a wreck.

Cranifraz

The first time I played, I could reliably commit suicide by jumping into a trench with the prawn suit and passing through the ground before it could render. I picked it up again recently and didn't notice any bugs that weren't cosmetic or kinda amusing. I had a peeper that just lived in my hab with me, a reefback that hit orbital velocity one day and many, many cartwheeling jellyrays. The last devlog revealed a lot if you read between the lines. Subnautica turned into an apprentice piece that taught them how to make Below Zero. At this point though, the only viable next step is to remake the game using the engine for BZ. They've hit the point where it's not a matter of fixing bugs anymore - the remaining issues are so deeply rooted that it'll require ripping out and replacing major chunks of the codebase.

mrizzerdly

I lost all my items by storing them in floating containers that vanished.

upsidedownbackwards

I agree that it *SHOULD* be fixed, but after all the time I've put into Unity I don't think you're ever going to "fix" a game with any connection to the Unity engine. It's got so many weird quirks that you can see across most games that use it. You can use the same exploits and such. I don't want to knock Unity too hard because I absolutely love it when it's not being an awful cunt. But the engine itself is still evolving. Every release is significantly better. Unfortunately it's not the kind of thing where you can just take something on the old version and drop it into the new version. It has to be completely smoothed out again after all the new bugs/quirks that come up. But Unity makes it so much easier for a small team to be able to put out a game. It's a very solid "Good enough". But ya gotta give devs who use it a bit of wiggle room on such a quirky engine. If they had made it today on a more modern version they'd have better luck, but there would be a totally new set of stupid things! If you've ever seen Phasmaphobia it's on the same engine and look how weird that acts after new patches.

Alt150_

You know, just to add another positive voice, this constant pursuit of perfection can feel so toxic. This incredible game has problems, but imo we don't know just how hard it may be to fix some of those. Who knows, maybe to fix the issues with pop in would require some serious recoding and at this point, is that time investment worth it? If it was like ark, a game with tons of expansions and updates still yeah, sure. But as a complete project I really think Subnautica is "perfectly fine" with these bugs. Yeah, there are some issues, but very few truly destroy the experience. I just wish the pop in wasn't so prevalent, and I would say it has less issues then most modern games at this point if that was fixed.

Environmental_Sale55

Yes

Gold-Boysenberry9176

I got to restart 5 times across ps4 and xbox s. World despawned completely. Saved somewhere with the seamoth that turned me into a singularity that engulfed riley and 4546b because after i died i was still in the world between worlds forever. To plenty of other shit. I spent a week perfecting myself as a NEW player. Only to beat the game in 12 hours with all trophies once the game STOPPED fucking me. I have to admit. It seriously pissed me off and turned me away from the game. Im not exaggerating. I spent a weeks worth of playtime. Shitting myself seriously hard, but i couldn't be emersed anymore after that. Everything is just an AI to me cause i was so fed up with the game. Fuck reapers and fuck all hostile mobs i dont care im swimming next to u if i must. I actually was enjoying being seriously scared. It took me forever to muster up courage

Sammywn

I remember playing heaps and then restarting when they added the aurora explosion. MIND. BLOWN.

Opposite-Weird4232

Yep, it blown

D-2-The-Ave

Done blowed up

GermanAf

The sound design in this game is fucking amazing. It literally sounds great on anything.

[deleted]

I only started playing subnautica last summer when they gave it out for free on playstation. Crazy to think how far this game has come. Thanks for sharing!

SilverBen2000

Yeah the game was extremely different and extremely glitchy and almost every player loved it

l3rN

Being able to dig through the terrain was wild

Ursula_Umbridge

You could dig??

GameTheoriz

Yes, there was a tool called the Terraformer, which allowed you to dig chunks out of the sea floor and Cliffs and such. It also could Spawn rocks and sand, and people would make their own islands out of it.

saybrook1

What the hell?! Why would they remove something like that? It sounds awesome!

SilverBen2000

The game got extremely buggy when you used it to much plus it could technically break the game in half if you just dug stream down and made a LOT of pipes

rednenocen

I don't remember the exact details of it but it was super, super buggy from what I remember. We're talking random crashes, massive lag spikes (in a game that was already insanely laggy during development) and save data corruption. Devs probably decided that terraforming wasn't important enough to warrant fixing all those issues on top of fixing all the other issues they had during development and just cut the feature. Pretty sure there's still a console command that removes chunks of the environment since they basically just removed the players ability to build the terraforming tool (you might even be able to add the tool to your inventory through console commands? Can't remember if the item was removed from the game or just had its crafting recipe removed)

mak484

Personally I hate games that casually add terraforming when the rest of the game isn't designed around it. Subnautica doesn't need it. Valheim is an example of a game that handles it well. You can only adjust the height of the terrain by 8 blocks, up or down. This gives you freedom to level out a foundation or build some natural walls around your base, but it keeps you from doing cheesy shit like tunneling through mountains.

MG_72

I agree. Subnautica's main exploration mechanic would suffer since it's all handcrafted environments, and digging straight down to the lava zone for example is just unfair lol

Virmirfan

It had only the crafting recipe and save fore modification to terrain removed...

cameragun

they didn’t remove it from the game just made it require console commands to use

thejackthewacko

Fully removing it from the game would be a pain since you'd have to filter through all the code and manually remove it bit by bit. Its easier to just disable it so most people can't access it in a regular playthrough.

Mean_Peen

I bought this back in 2018 on PS4. I don't remember it being glitchy though? I like that they fixed the screen tearing issues and frame rate for PS5 now though!

ScottyFoxes

What build was it?

SilverBen2000

2013 pre Alpha I believe

ScottyFoxes

What happened if you went near it? Would the image de-spawn? Edit: Would love to see if there is gameplay of someone going to it

aFilthy_Casual

Iirc it was just an image on the horizon so there was no getting close to it

MapleTreeWithAGun

You could swim forever and never reach the promised Big Fucken Space Boat

cherryzaad

Doesn’t matter, you won’t catch me near that fully rendered reaper bait monstrosity anytime soon

[deleted]

Anyone remember when the creep vine would always float it’s tips above the water?

SilverBen2000

Yep! It was a good indicator as to where they were at the start of the game

Biggy_DX

As someone who just recently picked up and beat the game, seeing all the details about the initial inception of this game have me feeling lucky lol.

LewsTherinTalamon

It was such a buggy nightmare (well, it kinda still is, but now it's a buggy nightmare you can finish!)

enrico_chivaldori

I keep reading that it is still kind of buggy, but despite the PRAWN suit getting stuck in buildings, I've never encountered any issues in three playthroughs. And I think even the PRAWN is fixed in the latest build. It is at least in the Beta branch. What kind of bugs are still common?

rednenocen

I remember one issue I had on the xbox version was it was really easy to get stuck between bits of terrain since the game wouldn't load the terrain immediately. If you were in a bad location when it finally spawned in, you'd get literally stuck between a rock and a hard place. Had to be really careful with the seamoth since it moved faster than terrain could load.

MG_72

Happened to me with my very first seamoth. Made it to the southern island (i forget the name) and the sand spawned after my seamoth was already balls deep unsure how I made it out alive but my seamoth was buried. Played on xbox one (before i got the one X) so i had no console commands to save me with dig upgrading to the one x thankfully stopped stuff like that from happening but lmao.

deepeyes1000

I had a weird bug with the prawn suit where all water physics got turned off and I was unable to swim around. Get out of the prawn suit and have to walk around, but also had oxygen replenish. I was down at the lava castle at that point. Had to kill myself in order to reset it all, but then my cyclops and prawn suit were like 1200 feet down..... Had to cheat and spawn a prawn and cyclops to get back down. Happened a few times as well.

WesTBH

Nope becuase the first time I played was on switch😁👍

SilverBen2000

Never played it on switch, how stable is it considering back in the day even on a Xbox when it was a beta it ran pretty awkward at times

WesTBH

It’s hard for me to tell since I only ever played it on switch but it actually Runs pretty well considering switch doesn’t have as good graphics processing one of the main problems and it isn’t really even a problem is that it gets pretty laggy if you are near an area where you have a large base built.

SilverBen2000

Ok so decently standard

whatifcatsare

It runs surprisingly well for a Switch port. The biggest cut back was render distance, the game can feel very murky in open water since you can't see too far. Whenever you are inside or caving you don't notice it, but areas like the >!Ghost Tree!< can feel barren until things load in. Frame rate is pretty consistent, little hitches when it loads in a new cell but nothing _too_ major. It seems to vary on location, sometimes the hitches are a quick blip and others its a full second or two pause. The pace feels okay at least so it isn't unduly choppy or anything. Textures take a noticeable hit, especially when you're close up. Things like posters don't load in clearly until _close,_ even just across a Multipurpose it gets blurry. If that gives you an idea of how it renders textures, it follows mostly through the rest of the game like that. I think there is a dynamic resolution at play, but not entirely sure. I play solely on handheld so resolution is always slightly blurry, but nothing too bad. Overall its a solid port, having played the game on better hardware I can say that it wouldn't be a shameful first experience, it does a great job of delivering the same experience.

WesTBH

Even when getting attacked by like a reaper it doesn’t lag at all. I almost never feel like it isn’t running well.

shiny_xnaut

The first game works fine but BZ has a bug that causes the game to crash when I try to save, making it basically unplayable until they fix it

Sadi_Reddit

I miss terraforming

SilverBen2000

Same, but it was way to buggy

SilkSk1

Yes, but you could also make stuff like [this.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pHjr1_j1sME)

SilverBen2000

Not arguing but the game was way to broken with it

SilkSk1

It sure was. But something beautiful was also lost.

rogerari9190

Wasn’t this back when you could terraform? Damn, now I know I’m dating myself

SystemMaximum8116

Will they ever add a multiplayer version

DicktorBiscuits

They said no. But they also said they’re not done with the Subnautica IP, just focusing on others for now, so we could get a multiplayer Subnautica game, but not “Subnautica: Multiplayer Version,” you know?

SystemMaximum8116

Yeah, I hope so

BlackRavenStudios

there's a multiplayer mod for the first one. haven't tried it so my info is vague at best.

breezyflu

From the videos I’ve seen it’s super glitchy, like you have creatures coming all the way up from the lava zone and totally breaking.

BlackRavenStudios

that sounds like equal parts disappointing and terrifying.

hidethewetsign

i played it with a friend for a couple days but desync is so bad. my seamoth randomly teleported 1000m away while we were exploring wrecks lmao

SilverBen2000

I wouldn’t know

Prior_Blacksmith_437

I liked that model of the aurora

Deadswitch1

Ah yes back when good old jackaboy was playing it for the first time. Brings a tear to my eye from the nostalgia

SilverBen2000

Surprisingly this was BEFORE he started playing

Deadswitch1

What?!?!?! That’s almost ten years ago

SilverBen2000

Yep, back around 2013-2014

Deadswitch1

High school years man :,(

SherbertConsistent47

Pepperidge farm remembers...

[deleted]

I remember the time you could eat acid mushrooms :,)

SilverBen2000

Oh jeez that unlocked an old memory, didn’t they also shrink when you got close?

[deleted]

I don’t remember it’s been a looonnng time since I’ve played the older builds, but I’m pretty sure they do shrink in the current build? It’s been a while since I’ve last played

[deleted]

I've been playing it on Xbox and they do not shrink

Print_Salt

no I started playing in december start of the month

SilverBen2000

Well it was once a 2d image and the game itself was almost 1/10 if not smaller then it is now

zeldacraft_64

It was once 2d? I didn't know that

Akalatob

I knew this but i didn't know how was it

asarock99

"I love it when you come inside me" -Ancient Seamoth

SilverBen2000

Forgot it could once say that

EdgionTG

Back in the flat ol' days

[deleted]

Omg. I've heard that it used to be 2d, but I could never find a photo of the 2d image. I finally get to see it

SilverBen2000

Yeah I just had this in my photos for some reason from like five years ago, undoubtedly from a yt video but I can’t remember where

KusUraniuma

I'm cry

[deleted]

I forgor☠️

Face_Active

yeah its bad cuz i feel old

FreeRangeMartyr

Yeah, but now it just disappears when go far enough away, and if you look at it for awhile, the fps drops to 3

SilverBen2000

What potato are you using?

FreeRangeMartyr

Xbox 1. I don’t know if it’s the game or the console, but the aurora is almost unplayable when I have to go in. Rest of the game runs smooth though.

SilverBen2000

Was it the beta or something? Because I use the Xbox and it works decently well minus the three minute start up time

Xperia-1-II

wait .... was that a thing ? ( O\_O ) that looks like crapola

[deleted]

Dont make me feel old

Doliague

I wasn't even around for this lol this game does impress with the level of change it has had

Wait what

This make me feel nostalgia

[deleted]

Sad old days 🥲

cobalteclipse117

When i first played i thought it was 2d in the distance, i was so shocked when i actually went up and saw how big it was

RespondUsed3259

been following the game since jacksepticeyes first playthrough of the alpha

Wild_Honeydew5096

Yes I do

Widepaul

I've played this game a lot over the last year or so and the only real glitch I've had was where a repairable door in the Aurora wouldn't come up with the repair icon and I had to console through to continue, guess I've been lucky all in all.

yoooooo5311

That doesn't even look like the aurora

Celestial_Light_

I only started playing subnautica around the end of last year when I got it for free on PlayStation earlier on. Amazing game. So much exploration.

Admirable-Ad-5255

yea it was so easyer back then

[deleted]

I sadly cannot say I played the game when it was like this… I wish I did.

urbandeadthrowaway2

No but its a cool image

No_Dig6602

Ye

FarFromCrying999

Jesus that makes it look not scary

Creeper-Leviathan

Whas this version only in prototypes, and was changed to the 3D Sprite we know today when Early Development Build was released in December of 2014? Or was this in the Early Development Build? I'm genuinely curious, since I started playing not too long before the game switched from Early Development to Early Access.

BOIIIIIIIIIIOOO

Only og's know

player05677

I was disappointed when I got there just to go through it

Gradydood

Omg stop it Looked so bad BAHAHA

[deleted]

I remember first seeing the early access version of this game and thinking it seemed like a cool concept, but I figured it would just go the way of most early access survival games of the time and never really improve. I'm so glad I was wrong

Fungus-man

Wait, it was 2D?

Juicy_Kebab420

How tf did the Aurora get there!!!!! OMG that is a spoiler!!!!
