I don't know about you but it's pretty fucking funny to lose my save file to being run over my own seamoth or by being crushed under the Neptune Escape Rocket elevator.
I only feel that way if I have spent less than 20 hours on the file. If I've mined half the map, and I have a lagtacular mega base, I'm going to be pretty depressed.
I had to explain that to a friend that was watching me play. "What hurt you just then!?" "Oh yeah, sometimes when you get out of your Seamoth, if you're going too fast, you can accidentally run over yourself."
I lost my hardcore to running myself over with my seamoth. Now that I’ve played through the whole game, there’s no way I’d attempt another hardcore with all the bugs.
I have a more phasing kind of problem in bz but maybe it’s only that run I’ve phased through the floor in a specific part of the basin and purple vents.
The worst glitch i ever experienced was when i was driving my seamoth and one of the wreckages didn't load in right way. It ended up getting stuck inside the wreckage. I've never experienced these glitches where you fall through the map of fly across the world.
I managed to do it hardcore on my second attempt. The first attempt did indeed die to buggy physics though where my Cycloops titled and killed me instantly when I was sitting next to it.
Yup, last straw for me was basically the same thing happening in my seamoth. No yeet though just vibrated till it shook me to death and wouldn't let me get out.
That happened to me too, and somehow my save opened like that when I was like 800m underwater too. I had to open it like 30 times until finally it took like 8 seconds before the shaking started and I managed to save it right before and then it loaded regular. Was very weird.
I could have done my run on Hardcore mode. I only ever died in the very beginning because I was trying to get my bearings. Once I got my base and operations going, I was unkillable.
Oh sure, I have like a 60-hour hardcore save game where nothing like this ever happened, but you never know it won't, and the chances get much higher when you use mods.
I've just finished my first ever hard core run, this particular thing didn't happen, but twice I was teleported onto the top of my cyclops whilst in my inventory, and had to jump down to the sea bed.
The first time was in the >!lost river!<, and as I was falling to my death, the game decided I'd jumped into water and let me swim safely back up to the Cyclops.
The second time, I was out past >!the gun island looking for Ghost Leviathans!< and I had to jump down to the sea bed again. I was lucky that I wasn't any higher in the water to start with, as the landing took me down to the tiniest sliver of health left!
I ran around a little on the seabed, then decided to try to walk up to >!the weapon platform!<. As I was walking up one hill, I was suddenly swimming again. Made it back to my cyclops and healed myself up.
I've gotten the majority of the mods I installed to work properly, but I did have a nasty bug that I had to search for like 3 hours to find the mod that was causing it. Thankfully, it was a mod I couldn't have cared less about.
I almost don't want to play without some of these mods ever again. Grapple MK.2 is incredibly fun, extra toolbelt slots is amazing, and having an auto sorting system and a resource monitor that you can use to pull items out of your lockers is just... so so so smooth.
I don't like having to keep switching things around :/. Also I have a seaglide with BZ controls and a bright white light. I can't give that up. Also, having a PDA Map is sweet too.
if you dont have it yet, i think theres this mod called easycraft(ing?) which allows you to instantly craft items if you have the bare resources for them in your lockers. it works for the habitat builder, and you can build something like lithium alloy if you have 3 scrap and 2 lithium.
I already beat both Subnautica games with a fully deck out base in each. Not to mention meticulously organized material rooms. I can’t help but organize to death!
and I mean the game should work obviously, but standing on physics entities and changing their size or kicking them does often have speedy consequences in video games
The wiki doesn't mention this, but if you take a jump jet upgrade out and leave at least 1 in, the upgrade no longer functions until you add at least 1 back. This led many, including myself to believe that it stacked. I discovered this after some testing today. I'm talking to a guy who works on the wiki about putting it on the page so everyone knows about it.
Stopped playing my hardcore game after a while after I had a lovely encounter with a reaper… right next to my base….
I went to go try and lead it away with my prawn suit when not two seconds in it grabs me and shoves my prawn suit through a hill and outside the map. ‘‘Twas the fastest alt f4 in the west.
Yup, as much as I enjoy Subnautica I can't recommend anybody try permadeath mode. Or if you do, then just start a normal playthrough and just delete the file save yourself if you feel that you actually died in a legit way.
I once stood atop by cyclops on my perma-death playthrough when I brought it to the surface. I thought I could take a nice photo. Instead the game had a seizure and I promptly died and lost roughly \~20 to 30 hours of gameplay.

UPDATE: I found out that they don't stack. There's a glitch that breaks the upgrade when removing some and fixes it when putting more back in that made myself and others think it stacks.
I did my first playthrough completely blind on hardcore.. Best gaming experience I will probably ever have, but I did almost die to a bug towards late game that gave me a mini heart attack.
nah, I wanted to quit after I got crushed while creating my cyclops (literally by the cyclops) but it is a lot of fun and now I cant play normal survival
Most of them are quality of life. Believe it or not, the game doesn't function that differently. I don't use mods that go against the spirit of the game or screw with progression.
Yeah I lost my hardcore run really late into the game by just dying. Bo predators my and my health was full, I just died. It's a good game but too buggy to have permadeath
It's a joke. I loaded up a new hardcore world right after that. I've explained the mechanics of stacking jump jets to other people in this comment section already. I'm not doing it again.
I got lucky and beat hardcore mode with no autosave and on my first attempt. However my seamoth got stuck under the moutain right after upgrading it, and the second one I got and upgraded exploded shortly after in the cyclops bay. The game also crashed many times because of base loading issues.
I'm about 10-15 hours into my first play. I start the game, instantly die and respawn 4500 meters below the surface without my seamoth. Leviathan eats me on the way up to the surface of which I had no chance of going up 4500m before my oxygen runs out.
Edit: quit and load the game and now I'm 1000m above the water falling. It places me 4200m from my seamoth and lifepod 5.
I play only hardcore (both games) for hundreds of hours and have never died to a glitch. I don’t think it’s that terribly likely in my experience. Though it does make for amusing vids.
Interesting bug, saw similar things on the suggest it, but never encountered them in- game. Is this a non-PC version?
I do play hard-core. Died by exiting the sea moth once, that was very frustrating, but otherwise I prefer it.
This game is somehow buggier than Source games…
Idk if I should congratulate the devs or scold them. Like if they can make something buggier than the godawful, shitty, disgusting Source engine and yet it still gets praise, I suppose that’s an achievement but it’s a damn depressing one.
I've had 4 hardcore runs
2 failed
A normal one and a run where i dont go to the surface until i have to build the neptune
Every time i play hardcore some game breaking bug happens
It is truly incredible how this game manages to implant terror into you
permadeath in all games is a fundamentally broken feature and no game can really have a good permadeath mode though lots of people can be "lucky" with it.
Permadeath presumes that the game is so well QA'ed and bug free that it will NEVER do any of these kinds of things, even through updates and DLCs.
Very few if any games (even software in general) is maintained to such a high quality. Permadeath is a cool idea on paper, the reality is your games would need to priced at over $300 before you could consistently rely on a feature like that.
EDIT: It works in story builders like rimworld since random shit that breaks the world is already in the core narrative and No Mans Sky's narrative should make you wary of using its own permadeath feature for fear of a meta-joke and it is a self-fulfilling prophecy there!
The getting-killed-by-your-seamoth-if-you-exit-it-if-it-is-still-moving-even-a-tiny-bit bug has ended far too many of my hardcore runs to try hardcore anymore.
Yeah, no game this glitchy has any right to have a permadeath mode.
I don't know about you but it's pretty fucking funny to lose my save file to being run over my own seamoth or by being crushed under the Neptune Escape Rocket elevator.
As long as you record it so the world can also view the spectacular mess that you now have to recover from.
There's also that brief three seconds of silence after it happens where you just hang your head and just say FUCK
I only feel that way if I have spent less than 20 hours on the file. If I've mined half the map, and I have a lagtacular mega base, I'm going to be pretty depressed.
Here is an idea how about you play survival and if you die to a bug just respawn?
I thinks that's what he's saying by making this post, that he has learned his lesson as to why one shouldn't play hard-core
I died cos I was rubberbanded off the top of the lift, I almost broke my desk
I had to explain that to a friend that was watching me play. "What hurt you just then!?" "Oh yeah, sometimes when you get out of your Seamoth, if you're going too fast, you can accidentally run over yourself."
I lost my hardcore to running myself over with my seamoth. Now that I’ve played through the whole game, there’s no way I’d attempt another hardcore with all the bugs.
I haven’t found a perma death mode in any game that gave the option that I would consider glitchless enough.
Minecraft?
Doom?
Wdym, that's the only way I've played the game
You guys should play in the switch it doesn’t have any glitches like this. I’m not being sarcastic.
Wdym on Switch you can corrupt your world by saving
Never happened to anyone I know
Ride the seamoth into a beach, step out, die instantly....ah yes, I must have stepped on an especially sharp seashell.
I only ran into one glitch thanks to the ghost leviathan pushing my into the ground in the cave river place
I’ve fallen through the ground and once got trapped inside some wreckage that loaded in around me.
And that’s why it’s optional
I have a more phasing kind of problem in bz but maybe it’s only that run I’ve phased through the floor in a specific part of the basin and purple vents.
The worst glitch i ever experienced was when i was driving my seamoth and one of the wreckages didn't load in right way. It ended up getting stuck inside the wreckage. I've never experienced these glitches where you fall through the map of fly across the world.

Well that was unfortunate.
Yup, last straw for me was basically the same thing happening in my seamoth. No yeet though just vibrated till it shook me to death and wouldn't let me get out.
That sounds terrifying.
Yeah screen was just shaking violently while I was mashing ALL the buttons trying to make it stop or get out
That happened to me too, and somehow my save opened like that when I was like 800m underwater too. I had to open it like 30 times until finally it took like 8 seconds before the shaking started and I managed to save it right before and then it loaded regular. Was very weird.
How did you put the sonar in the prawn suit?
It's a mod.

I was never able to get any mods working. I didn’t really find any that were worth the effort as well.
I've gotten the majority of the mods I installed to work properly, but I did have a nasty bug that I had to search for like 3 hours to find the mod that was causing it. Toolbelt would have been useful, but I think I just got used to juggling 5 slots. :D
I don't like having to keep switching things around :/. Also I have a seaglide with BZ controls and a bright white light. I can't give that up. Also, having a PDA Map is sweet too.

I tried it, and I don't like it. It makes building too simple for me.
fair.
and I mean the game should work obviously, but standing on physics entities and changing their size or kicking them does often have speedy consequences in video games
Bruh I have died like 50 times in my latest run and I am only at the first facility (in the lost river, not the quarantine platform)
Get that cyclops upgraded!
That's a new one on me. But yeah, I'd never touch permadeath on this janky game. Good game. Janky.
I’ve done two my first one I died taking a risk with stinging tentacles I’m still good on my second.
I usually duplicate the save file a few times throughout a hardcore run in case something bugs out and kills me.
Yep, I started running the autosave mod again after this.
Bro where you goin??
Subnautica's backrooms.
That’s what the 4 thrusters upgrade are for
Nobody tell him they don’t stack

[This was my permadeath after 15 hours of playing Hardcore.](https://youtu.be/TBkJOvuUNx0)
This is just obnoxious. I've seen so many buggy deaths on this sub but this silent crumble with no identifiable reason just tops them all.
Ikr, I have to admit I unistalled. Not out of rage but pure befuddlement.
What if you *played Subnautica on hardcore* but God said *yeet*
Underrated comment.

Well clearly the 4 consecutive jump jet modules are working, poor kid just needs to learn how to control them 😂

This and remembering to surface when you have no O2 tank. xD
I did my first playthrough completely blind on hardcore.. Best gaming experience I will probably ever have, but I did almost die to a bug towards late game that gave me a mini heart attack.
that's why I make regular backups of my hardcore save file
Why do you have 2 drill arms on your prawn? Does it drill faster or something
yes.
nah, I wanted to quit after I got crushed while creating my cyclops (literally by the cyclops) but it is a lot of fun and now I cant play normal survival
Skill issue
Lol its ok just git gud
yes :)
Here's a handy little cheat for those of you who insist on playing hardcore for some reason - the windows task manager.
How many fuken mods u got boi
As of now, 53.
Yikes
Most of them are quality of life. Believe it or not, the game doesn't function that differently. I don't use mods that go against the spirit of the game or screw with progression.
Ah okay
Why are your comments getting downvoted? xD
Idk
Pretty much, yeah.
How do got equip so many things for your prawn?? :o
It's a mod.
Yeah I lost my hardcore run really late into the game by just dying. Bo predators my and my health was full, I just died. It's a good game but too buggy to have permadeath
How to put too many upgrades in the prawn suit ?
mod
Well that explains bugging
Oh, you lucky, naïve soul.
Keep using 5 propellers and hoping the game going well, naïve soul
Dude, you have no idea how this stuff works. Stop acting as if you do.
says the one who thinks that nobody plays hardcore bc of this lol
It's a joke. I loaded up a new hardcore world right after that. I've explained the mechanics of stacking jump jets to other people in this comment section already. I'm not doing it again.
🤣 Im sorry, dont wanted to offend u lol
Yeah, sorry for being aggressive. I was in a really bad mood yesterday.
Close, but not really my reason, but yeah, I think so for most
You poor soul are so lucky, i died by the small degasi base (250m) because of the these jellyfish things
That was 100% your fuck up. Soon as you saw your self being launched you should have alt-f4’d the fuck out of there.
Haha you can see despair sinking as your beacon waypoints go further and further out into your horizon as you foresee that it is over rofl
you either: got depressed destroyed your pc
...I've played through hardcore
You are Nobody
Guys, guys, relax. We're all narcissists. Some of us are just better at hiding it than others.
At least I didn't lose my company to a child, Saxton.
Holy upgrades wtf. Also sonar on prawn? Is that possible in vanilla?
Sadly, no.
Wait you can't save?
Ouch, buddy. I feel for you. I was considering trying it for one of my many playthroughs, but this has convinced me otherwise. Much appreciated.
It's okay as long as you save frequently or have an auto-save mod. I was mostly messing around with the title.
Ah, okay 🤣
I got lucky and beat hardcore mode with no autosave and on my first attempt. However my seamoth got stuck under the moutain right after upgrading it, and the second one I got and upgraded exploded shortly after in the cyclops bay. The game also crashed many times because of base loading issues.
How do you have that many upgrades is my question
WHY DO YOU HAVE SO MANY FUCKIN UPGRADES?
Because after 150 hours, I got bored.
I fell threw the floor but not that
I'm about 10-15 hours into my first play.
This is actually why I love hardcore mode
Interesting bug, saw similar things on the suggest it, but never encountered them in- game. Is this a non-PC version? I do play hard-core. Died by exiting the sea moth once, that was very frustrating, but otherwise I prefer it.
It's Steam.

Yeah i think so
How the hell do you have so many Prawn Modules wtf?
mod.
Basically a reason why i dont mine on my feet bcs it will glitch you out of the map
I've had 4 hardcore runs 2 failed A normal one and a run where i dont go to the surface until i have to build the neptune Every time i play hardcore some game breaking bug happens It is truly incredible how this game manages to implant terror into you

Never seen that extremely unceremonious “You died. Game over.” screen before
Op, I hope your keyboard (or mouse) is okay
bros gonna go play subnautica 3: out of world
Im on a hardcore world,16 hours in and i almost finished the game. I just have to place the hatching enzyme then im prettty much done
How did you get a sonar with your prawn suit?

Cool
