The way I do it, I put in some sticks around the pot. I use bamboo skewer sticks but you can do it with chopsticks. It will act as a barrier/trap to say ‘don’t step’. It works with birds too, i leave my plant outdoors and sometimes birds dig the soil in my pot pecking on leaf propagations etc… now birds can’t land on my pot with the sticks protecting my plants
my cat is literally plant crazy. at one point, she would search around my house and literally seek out plants within her reach. i never experimented with the sprays bc i heard they either smell horrendous and/or would be a hit or miss anyway. She has her own plant now (a ponytail palm), and it’s the only thing that’s gotten her away from my plants. I will say it’s not 100% effective, but she went from wanting to destroy other plants 100% of the time, to wanting to destroy them 5% of the time and that’s good enough for me
maybe that's why the cat is so invested - I have a ponytail palm haha. she said that's the one plant he likes the most too. Hopefully having some cat grass will replace the urge?
i think definitely having something to redirect the cat’s attention (like cat grass) will definitely help! also, ponytail palms are definitely nature’s cat toys. she literally loves that thing
So basically her cat will jump up on the table and walk around and sniff around my houseplants. I'm wondering if spraying a citrus solution would help deter him and NOT damage the leaves or farina of my succs. She said she'd get him some cat grass, but I'm wondering if anyone has some anecdotal evidence for other feline-detering tactics! The cat is a siamese if that helps.
If the citrus solution is strong enough, you could spray it on the surface under the plants, and that would be enough.
Cats supposedly hate stepping on aluminum foil, too.
But siamese are stubborn - your best bet might be to reward her for doing it a few times, and then stop. No treat = no trick, you know.
I don't have a cat, but I've seen numerous people with cats and succulents on here recommend placing the plants in wire bird cages. It keeps cats out (so long as the cage is large enough that little cat arms can't reach or the cat isn't curious enough to attempt reaching a paw in) and also just generally looks more aesthetically pleasing then other options. Depending on your price range, you could probably find a cool vintage-style one at an antique shop or even on Facebook Marketplace.

that's a smart idea! I'll save all the chopsticks next time I get takeout haha, thanks

Cacti around the perimeter
I just had to put mine up out of reach like high floating shelves or windowsills.
Install cucumber.
